This directory contains a number of issues of the Spanish newspaper "El Diario Sur". They were contributed by the University of Malaga. Original Organisation of the corpus ----------------------------------- The corpus is organized just as it was given by SUR. There is one directory for each day. Then each page of each day appears in one file. The texts that SUR gave us had some typographic problems, many of which we corrected manually. Yet, there are some problems: - some pages are missing (for instance first page) - the PAGE TITLE is lost in many occasions - such things as: photograph titles, section titles... are in many cases lost. Yet we can give some tricks as to the organization of each newspaper: - page three and followings of every newspaper are dedicated to MALAGA - around pages 20-40 are national-international news - the last pages are SPORTS, TV, Bullfighting... Re-organisation of corpus for ECI --------------------------------- The data originally came from a number of issues of the newspaper. The data was divided into files by pages of the newspaper, i.e. each file contained one page from an issue of the newspaper. The positions of the original file breaks have been marked by in the file spa02a.eci. For spa02j.eci the Sunday Supplement and the Sports Supplement have been marked by . For the other files, the original file breaks have been marked only by the position of . Not all page numbers are included and in files c, d and j they are not even in ascending order. Description of the corpus ------------------------- El Diario SUR has been published in Malaga (South Spain) for over 40 years now. It is the newspaper that sells most copies in the province of Malaga (around 40,000 copies). a) The language styles: Though a local newspaper, it belongs to a national company owning some other newspapers. This fact is important to know the kind of 'Spanish' you will find in the corpus: - very colloquial non-journalistic Andalusian Spanish in some sections where the readers send their own contributions, in e.g 'Cartas al director' (letters to the publisher) and 'Cosas de la ciudad' (things of the city) sections. - local journalistic style: in local news. This news usually comes under such headings as: MALAGA, LA PROVINCIA, COSTA DEL SOL or the name of some other towns of the area such as MARBELLA, TORREMOLINOS, ANTEQUERA, or RONDA. - standard journalistic style in national and international sections. Other important varieties can be found if sections on DEPORTES (sports) or TOROS (bullfighting) are examined. The size of these sections varies from day to day. Markup of the Corpus -------------------- Paragraphs have been marked with

. A paragraph was marked by an optional blank line or by a line with more than two spaces indentation. No attempt has been made to mark headlines, bylines etc. In the file spa02a particularly the paragraphs are rather impressionistic and not too much weight should be attached to them. A very few titles were marked in the original by <¡título>, these have been replaced by

In the file spa02a there were a large number of strange words, for example la1, la2, de1, de2, de3, de4, en2, qu2, y2 etc. It almost looks as if someone at one point had tried to tag different forms of these words. In any case, they have been replaced by the Spanish words la, de, en, qué and y, with the original left as the sic attribute of a .. unit.
