<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>11:09 morning gary hello there neil how are you too bad thank you good er just a quick sports comment i woke up this morning to an early news i don't remember which one it was and heard a reference about our game in sri lanka but then at nine oclock i heard the captain speak and what did he have words about our inexperienced bowlers but he himself has nothing to crow about if i can put it that way he we could be a hundred and fifty runs better off if he'd taken the first of those two catches he dropped yes that's quite right <{><[>yeah <[>we we are er we're in the the you might say we're in the pooh we CAN hope for a draw i only hope they can play for that it's a <.>b a draw's better than a loss mhm it's not it's not a win but it's much better than a loss probably <{><[>would've done <[>our bowlers ARE inexperienced they knew that before they went into the game why didn't they take a spinner <&>12:00 <{><[>well they <[>but anyway um i no i'll leave steve steve to work on that <{><[>one sometime <[>laughs yeah it IS right though if they'd taken the spinner in they wouldn't be in the same sort of problems they're in <{><[>either <[>no they're quite might they might not be you're right and AND if he'd taken the first catch mm then we wouldn't be chasing all those runs that's quite so quite so <{><[>you've been watching <[>by <.>e or even if he'd got to second that would've knocked a few off laughs and every run is going to count here some of the bowling did look a bit rough i saw a just sort of a film clip clips we oh we got were a couple of clips <{><[>didn't we <[>yes and the ball was flying er word <{1><[1>yeah <.>th they were all wides and <{2><[2>no balls weren't they yeah <[1>all over the place wasn't it <[2>mm not too <{><[>good <[>we gave away a few extras all right yes yes indeed but er we'll hope that they come right you never know <{><[>gary <[>yep voc we we looked impossible against england course mind you we had warren there but remember that er before the world cup started i was one of those who said my god i wish this cup was going to come on about three years later tut because look england would just knocked us hollow and <{><[>they nearly did but we came right <[>yes in the earlier series inhales yes and we sure did and er we're we had it <.>b in our grasp but it <{><[>just slipped away and er <[>we had it very close to it but the eventual winners knocked us they slipped away in the last hour in auckland that was all it was that's right all right gary thanks <{><[>neil <[>nice to hear you good voc bye bye cheery now <&>13:21 fourteen past nine radio dunedin talk back four seven nine thirteen oh five morning reg oh good morning neil um yeah this is about cricket as well actually um i was just looking at those clips um the other night on television tut and i don't know whether it was nash or vaughan but they come up out <.>of i thought it looked like mud and i thought well you know the situation and <.>th one of the bowlers one of the <.>pa um sri lankan bowlers his back was all covered in dirt and muddy sort of <{1><[1>condition they sort of you know sort of wonder whether you'd play junior cricket in that sort of conditions <{2><[2>over here but you know it looked like a pretty scruffy sort of pitch word wasn't there some comment about it being a scruffy pitch <{3><[3>at the time <[1>mm <[2>laughs yeah i know <[3>well they <.>w <&>14:00 they they held up the start of play er an hour or three <{><[>voc while they they sorted out the <.>y the conditions of the ground of it was like there was a great big HOLE in it at one part <[>yeah tut oh really you know there was a big hole in the ground oh and well a number of big holes and voc they were about two hours late starting mm at least two hours late starting because they they were er running around getting dirt to fill in these holes voc oh right you know the in the outfield you you know you'd run for a ball and just about disappear down a yeah a a burrow you know <.>a amazing yeah well the conditions you know it makes <{><[>a big difference what sort of conditions you're playing and i think the boys you know they're trying they're trying their best obviously er martin crowe's got other things on his mind when he's dropping catches like that cos he's one of our best catchers all of all time <[>fairly primitive yes he is too <{><[>yeah <[>and you know the extremely safe um in the in that position normally and i think it's just the pressure on him and the conditions and it's you know it's hot over there etcetera that's right well <{1><[1><.>catche catches are er easy to drop <{2><[2>but er hard to catch <{3><[3>aren't they so on a yeah <[1>and i think <[2>yeah <[3><.>c course course they are <{1><[1>and um you know in defence of what he's what he's up up against and i don't you know i mean i think it's only fair that these fellows <&>15:00 who came home came home for what they want er for their own reasons it's <{2><[2>their own personal decision fair enough <[1>yeah <[2>right yes interested to read <{1><[1>some of the comments over the weekend in the papers that it would seem from the cricket council's point of view that it's it's a business it's not a sport <{2><[2>and it you know and that's why they've kept them on there <{3><[3>mm <[1>yeah <[2>mm mm <[3>yeah well that's right that's that's what i thought when they when when you know when that was all that effort was made to keep the tour going i <{1><[1>thought well it is the money side of <{2><[2>it <[1>yep <[2>it's money yeah all that and that programme that was on last night you know the was it more than a game yes <{><[>yes that was interesting wasn't it mm <[>you know it was very interesting people are looking into the background of the olympics and so on you figure out what they're there for now they're not there for sport now are they no <{><[>unfortunately <[>far from it sadly <{><[>but <[>no but we'll enjoy we'll enjoy all the cricket it's good to get the commentaries um from all these places you know we're not getting the south african one but we're getting commentaries from australia and from our own games sound <{><[>exciting too in aussie <[>voc marvellous yes <{><[>great <[><.>al always thought that aussie do it do it pretty well <{><[>you know they <[>don't they do it well they <{1><[1>really there's a lot of atmosphere about <{2><[2>their commentaries <[1>yeah <[2>there's tremendous atmosphere i was thinking <{><[>that too the other day tremendous atmosphere <[>yeah mm <&>16:00 which is you know it's part of their history i suppose is they love the game so much and get so involved in it you know <{1><[1>it's like it's like baseball in america so you get so they get so involved and um they love it <{2><[2>so do we of course but they they seem to have that that oh i don't know i suppose <{3><[3>they have massive <{4><[4>crowd but <[1>yes <[2>clears throat <[3><.>i <[4>i think they've got that element of entertainment or <{1><[1>showbusiness goes seems <{2><[2>to go with it and <,> and and it's hard not to not to <{3><[3>listen mm yeah very good thanks reg <[1>mm <[2>yeah they've got the show they've got the showbiz voices laughs <[3>mm mm it's great thank you <{><[>okay bye bye <[>voc bye bye <&>16:24 <&>end of talkback on side one <&>side two <&>13:38 sixteen to ten very very closely after what's been happening <[>yeah all right frank and oh <{><[>word <[>and i hope they take it to heart there's a lot of hard things going <&>16:00 on out inhales outside in the world
