gather two or three or four other people who are passing by and say look if we all go over there together this guy is gonna stop he's not gonna take four of us on yeah <{1><[1>i i <.>w i <.>w agree with you but coming back to the point of <.>who um without er <&>2:00 wanting to get er dumped again laughs i would like to know these days how much support the police really have out <{2><[2>there there's a lot of people who they expect the police to come and help them and there was actually a um a couple of years ago <.>t two policemen beaten up on james smith's corner one friday night <[1>and that's actually sensible <[2>yeah and noone went to <{><[>their help <[>and nobody went to their assistance mm but i would like to know actually how much support the police actually have from the community they expect the community the community expect them to be there for them right but when it comes to the community and they're looking for witnesses of anything nobody wants to know a lot of the time you know you'll get um joe er a number of elderly and joe citizen ring your show but on the whole er the there's a lot of people who just don't want to get involved er i wonder brian what <.>do i mean getting back to the security there in in in that manners <&>3:00 mall area if the retailers expect us to shop there we expect to be able to shop in relative safety and security and are they willing to actually finance regular security patrols after dark on shopping evenings friday night bill can be very rough there i rang you about a year <{><[>ago about er somebody who was beaten up in the hoyts cinema complex <[>mm oh yeah i i <.>y you know we talked about that <{><[>around the games parlour there <[>yep right and friday night when everybody's out er voc it can be very rough i had a <{><[>an acquaintance of mine's friend who had his leg broken down the um side you know where the um post office is down that little lane there <[>i wouldn't walk through there look i would not walk through there at night would you yeah well this is friday night when people were about mm i mean five thirty in the evening when these two women were attacked <.>i <.>i i mean fair enough i mean <.>i you know i'd go through there at five thirty to catch a bus or something but i mean you wouldn't expect you'd be attacked at five thirty in the evening on your way home from work well looking around town these days <.>bob er <&>4:00 bill it's er it's surprising what can happen around town even at twelve o clock that's the element of surprise with purse snatches or anybody being mugged somebody just coming up to you got a light bud bang and they're off with your blimmin bag or your wallet and that's when shock sets in all right thanks for your call good morning rick yeah bill look i'd just like to put in the comment too what your listeners think about inhales what's called accountability aha well the biggest example i've got at the moment is we've just got the commissioner retiring his claim to fame is that crime has sort of tripled since he's been in he's built twenty two police stations he's just opened a new one with the madman banks for <{><[>twenty two million in dunedin <[>voc yeah we've got policemen now running round in forty thousand dollar cars with mag wheels that i can't afford to put on my cars yep we've got corporate think where they inhales i think of the latest a hundred and twenty recruits a hundred and eighTEEN have got tertiary education one of them wants to develop the new hundred million <&>5:00 dollar computer for the police another one wants to look into psychology of victim support hey we need panel beaters we need <,> ex wrestlers on the streets downtown in our cities we don't need flash policemen out in the suburbs in marble arches washing their cars as they seem to be doing a hell of a lot of in kilbirnie how good's how much good is a computer expert gonna be when you're getting your head beaten in in manners mall on a friday night exactly the police <{><[>to me are like nazi germany at the moment where in the thirties nazi germany was building up their battleships and their HUGE equipment and capital resources where and no one was watching you know what's the name of the game what are they after um they've passed on parking responsibilities i noticed the parking wardens in wellington are now running round with PSEUdo police cars and are picking you up for warrant of fitnesses and they're going to pick you up for registration <[>reprogramme this thug mm? oh er but where's the policemen you know where's the guy on the street he's working on his computer he's into his new dos system there and having quite a good time thank you very much <&>6:00 well the new police stations i feel like taking my shoes off when i go in because the carpet's so thick laughs <{><[>laughs <[>you know i think i think they've built a corporate voc corporation a bit like er air new zealand was <{><[>ten years ago <[>cop corp yeah cop corp yeah it's just it's just crazy as for downtown it's not the retailers' responsibility i was manager of a er downtown manners mall voc outfit voc um it's not our responsibility i believe we're talking about the public streets we're talking about where are the policemen aha you <{><[>know um <[>word is it <.>i i mean look the the the reality of life i <.>y and what have you moved onto by the way are you now sort of you know inside a sort of turbo jet engine somewhere at wellington airport by the sound of it but <{><[><.>i <[>no i was heading north and listening to you on the radio <{><[>and thought hey someone's going to have to stop these guys <[>oh you're <.>o the old mobile i was in er i was in auckland er not long ago and i go to browns bay and there's a bloody new police station there's a new one in naenae new one in johnsonville new one in er kilbirnie and a brand new one in wellington central but there are no policemen in downtown manners <&>7:00 mall <{><[>now come on you know what is their <,> er what i'd call their mission statement <[>laughs yeah you want two cops permanently on the beat in manners mall yep like there used to be i can remember when i was a kid friday night there was a bobby on jones smith's <{><[>directing the <.>traf he was a traffic officer but there were always bobbies around <[>yep they'll drive by in their cops in er in their cars and have a little peek up there but don't er they're not on the beat they're not there where they're really needed no well this is it yeah <{><[>but <[>and the cars they're driving i mean say a word at the top i cannot understand why the community constable in kilbirnie drives a v three thousand capable of two hundred kilometres an hour christ he's a <.>cro <.>co community constable he should be running round in a ford siesta or a honda civic <{><[>like they do on the bill <[><.>wh some of those neighbourhood watch groups can be very hard to catch rick good to talk to you this morning twenty nine minutes to twelve <&>7:44 <&>untranscribed section of advertisements <&>9:18 maybe we could start bringing you the two z b mugging report yes two pedestrians down getting their heads kicked in in manners mall you know avoid that area like the plague twenty seven minutes to twelve on wellington two z b inhales barbara how are you this morning good thank you bill what can we do for you well i've been listening to the talkback this morning voc er about the manners mall incident and um <.>i what about has anybody thought of <.>ha installing concealed video cameras in that area to be a backup anyway as er for taking evidence and things like that yeah well this is the kind of positive thinking i think they need to do <{><[>if you word <[>i mean it's all very well talking about the police being there <&>10:00 <{><[>but they never seem it it seems that they're not always in the right place at the right time but at least with a video camera there'd be some sort of backup as as a witness <[>mm aha to what has happened even if people perhaps don't come forward true it'd be it'd be <.>u they'd be useful as a bit of a deterrent that people would eventually find out or be told that they were there yes the only thing is a video camera couldn't get a <.>pi a a bunch of hoons off my back if <{><[>they were trying to sort of beat my head in <[>no no i realise <{><[>that but i believe the people of point howard um are are <.>the have worked together and installed a um a video camera before people go up to point howard and it's been a very good deterrent <[>no oh yeah yes what so is it <.>s sort of watching the street up <{><[>there <[>yes <.>w <.>i all the cars that go up are on the video camera and if there's been any burglaries <{1><[1>etcetera it's been a <.>v a very positive way of um catching the the people <{2><[2>mm <&>11:00 <[1>aha <[2>gosh if you were a young young and frisky lad you wouldn't want to take your <{><[>girlfriend up there for a park up any more would you <[>laughs i don't know is there still a good site up there is there <{><[>laughs <[>i don't know don't ask me i've been married far too long to find out <{1><[1>those sorts of things but i mean yes it's bit of a worry actually <{2><[2>you never know who's watching <{3><[3>you know if if you're a young un <[1>laughs <[2>laughs <[3>no you don't but i thought i think it's quite um tut a positive way of at oh at least those people up there feel there's some they're doing something towards helping the situation mm well a bit of proactive thinking there and it's a good one too good suggestion olga good morning good morning about this business in manners mall er my son in law is a security guard at the town hall complex there aha and last week he asked three eighteen year olds not to skateboard around there and they attacked him with their skateboards <,> what hit him over the head with a <{><[>skateboard <[>well they hit him on the back with a skateboard and threatened to kill him dear me so he had no backup so all <&>12:00 he could do was just back off and just report it well see some of the skateboarders drive me crazy because they come whipping down the pavement up behind you <{><[>they can run over <.>y you your kids <[>well this is near the complex itself they're not supposed to be skateboarding there <{><[>there's signs up and everything <[>is this is this around the civic centre <{><[>area where the nice mm inhales <,> well it just shows you even if you're a security officer you can run in to trouble <[>yeah that's right yeah that's right yes they were three big eighteen year olds he said <{><[>and um having no backup he just had back off again you know and just go and report it <[>mm did they catch them i don't know i didn't hear <.>th they seem to know who they are apparently they er are there quite a lot safety in numbers i think if you're employing security <{1><[1>guards you should always have them in pairs as well rather than just on their own <{2><[2>or they're just going to get into <.>to in in into all kinds of strife inhales <{3><[3>but but er <,> voc <{4><[4>whacked over the head <[1>that's right yeah yeah <[2>mm <[3>yeah <[4>so laughs i just thought i'd let you know okay okay well thank you <{><[>for ringing and it just shows you how violent it can get out there it's dangerous out there take care out of <&>pronounced outta there out there guys good morning jimmy morning jimmy <&>12:58 <&>untranscribed section caller not new zealander and possibly scottish <&>15:28 <[>thank you bye jimmy good to talk to you oh well <.>h hear from the regular voice of manners mall kept thinking he's got it staked out <.>min er morning blair yeah good morning bill i'd just like to agree with that lady about the cameras aha they do work well in point howard and yeah i think that they they would work in er manners mall as well they're good for after the after the fact they i mean there's a little bit of deterrent if if the if these kids are bright enough to know they're going to be filmed not to actually front up there anywhere near the cameras secondly you can use them as evidence <&>16:00 but if an <.>in incident occurs they're not the whole answer are they they can't help you no they're not but then i don't know if security is the whole answer either i i've had um a lot of kids tell me that um apparently they have security at mcdonald's aha but they only look after you while you're in mcdonald's <{><[>if anything happens outside mcdonald's they just wash their hands of it <[>that's right no you need security in the mall area itself if you if you go to queensgate <&>pronounced queenscate er queensgate in the hutt or if you go to k mart <.>ou out in porirua you don't have gangs of youths wandering through there causing trouble voc families are safe to go there oh yeah i i yeah i agree with that actually i think you made a good point before too that the these kids are actually a step up from the street kids yeah um you know i've had problems with the street kids <,> and that's rather unusual cos i'm not exactly a small person voc laughs but um i've also had trouble with these other kids the fifteen sixteen seventeen year olds aha who you know they er they they follow you around some of the things they say you know and <&>17:00 basically they try and intimidate you which is er you know <{><[>word are some these streetkids <[>what are they what are they after what are they after are they just after <.>they they are they just doing it for aggravation or are they after clothing or after money or or what well er sometimes i think it's just aggravation i've had them follow me from manners mall half way down courtney place you know just basically with obscene comments obscene gestures etcetera <.>i i think they try and aggravate you they try and intimidate you they try and see where they can get with you yeah and if you turn around and you you bite they're all in um well would they take you on or not laughs they they did once mm? they did once they um unfortunately they they came off second best so laughs they've left me alone since but even so i think it must be fairly intimidating for women yeah yeah <{><[>and blair and blair are you a reasonable you know you're <.>you you're you're a reasonable height <[>you know er well i'm six feet tall but i'm eighteen stone so <{><[>i'm <&>18:00 <[><.>y you're not a small chap at all are you <{><[>blair <[>no and i'm not exactly small and that's that's the surprising thing <{><[>that er they don't seem to care they they just you know they <.>th they aggravate everybody <[>mm yeah would you've er i mean if you saw those two women being done over there <.>o on five thirty the other night would you have intervened yes yeah i'd like to think i would have too yes <{><[>well <[>i can't <.>i i can't imagine people just walking past i'd pile in i think it's disgraceful that er er any well you're not much of a man if you let two women get beaten up by eight little scumbags <{><[>basically <[>yeah yeah and er you can always rally a bit of support in that sort of situation <&>18:32
