<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>1:10 good morning to you in christchurch pauline hello? you've been waiting quite a long time thank you for waiting pauline you have a question about your car er er no i have a question about buying a car right mm okay um tut voc my daughter who's in her first job since tertiary education is wanting to buy a car but her resources are very slim mhm she's written to dad asking him to look out for something she's coming back at easter right um she needs it for long trips backwards and forwards to home inhales and running around town mm tut um voc at the moment she's got i think she thinks fifteen hundred right um we might be able to help her along with an extra thousand <{><[>but um what would you suggest would be inhales er able to do what she wants exhales for that price <&>2:00 <[>mm right it's um voc pricing's very hard for for me to get involved with if you can understand that pauline is cos <{1><[1>swallows it takes me all my time to keep up with er inhales repairing them um <{2><[2><.>but <[1>yeah yep <[2>what would be what's likely to be <.>g value for money what sort of what sort of make's likely to be value for money well obviously i've got to say a nissan <{><[>laughs right um well you know er sunnies um voc i think really anything that's japanese within reason is your better bet to go <[>laughs what sort <[>laughs within reason mm meaning? <{><[>laughs <[>well swallows there are some japanese ones that fall over a wee bit earlier than the others but er inhales no <.>it really for that sort of money er you're going to be buying something that's fairly high ks yeah <{><[>around what <[>and i would say um about a hundred and thirty thousand something like that i would think you may find something that's a wee bit lower er as i say i'm not into the pricing of vehicles <{><[>but <[>oh right um <&>3:00 <.>wou <{1><[1>would you <.>re would you recommend that um voc voc er <.>th this lady would wait <.>a and get something a bit more voc for a bit more money and or or is it can you still get a good car for that <{2><[2>price <[1>but <[2>oh you can get a reasonable car that would <{1><[1>do <.>but that will trot around town how far out of town are you <.>to <{2><[2>is it lot of open road driving or not <[1>mm <[2>or <.>sh er no she wouldn't have a lot um normally except if she wanted to do long trips or go <.>ou go out at the weekend mm she's not in christchurch but she comes home for holidays <{><[>so <[>right yeah inhales well i think really it's just a matter of um grabbing the paper having a decent look and er just having a look around really it's <.>i i'm sorry i can't tell you specifically which one to buy but er the main thing obviously is <.>d is the condition of the body is the first sign isn't it if <.>sh if it looks good then it's obviously been reasonably looked after which is <.>a a big plus yeah would you recommend an a a check <{><[>for pauline mm <[>oh yes yes <.>y and i'd recommend a <.>wes <&>4:00 western nissan check <{1><[1>as well but no that's if you're going to buy something get someone to look at it <{2><[2>that's important <[1>laughs <[2>do you do you check cars out for <{1><[1>people who are are looking to buy is there a <{2><[2>set price for that is <{3><[3>that expensive <[1>tut oh yes <[2>yeah <[3>yeah it er varies on how far you want to go with that service now it can range from thirty up to fifty dollars mm depending on what how far you want to go <.>whe so for fifty dollars <{1><[1>you could get a fairly thorough check <{2><[2>as to what what you're getting yourself <{3><[3>into that would probably be worth the <{4><[4>investment <[1>that's very thorough <[2>very thorough <[3>yes yes <[4>tut oh it's money well spent mm yeah yes so um but that's what i'd suggest to you anyway <{><[>er <[>right right so no makes that are er that <.>that <{><[>should be avoided <[>are better than others? laughs oh are likely to fall over <{><[>earlier <[>oh um i don't think i could say that on this radio <{><[>programme laughs all i can say is that er the nissan'll look after you um possibly like most other makes <[>oh right laughs okay all right thanks very <{><[>much <[>thanks for your <{1><[1>call this morning <{2><[2>pauline double three eight two triple nine is the number to ring oh three if you're out of the calling area <&>5:00 and don't forget eleven thirty we focus on the family <&>interference when and if you have a question for my guest automotive technician alan finlayson he's here in the studio with me this morning until eleven thirty to answer your question and er voc today is april fool's day and just before the break alan you did mention briefly about breath testing for cars i don't think we fully answered that question it <.>is it's happening isn't it it's not <{3><[3>a joke it's <{4><[4>no joke <[1>you're welcome <[2>bye <[3>yeah <[4>no no i think you'll find that the regional council is getting in behind it as well and um like i say voc most franchises and service centres would be offering i would hope to think a free breath test anyway and so by er having the test on your car you can tell if it's healthy or not oh yes you can tell if it's using too much fuel if it needs er valve grind or the motor needs doing things like that <{><[>or if it's got an exhaust leak <[>so this <.>is so this is the machine you put it on to <{><[>test the breath <[>mm and it's and it's a quick test <&>pronounced as chest it's only two minutes and you drive in and you drive out well there's no excuse for that <{1><[1>okay all of you drink drivers or voc well <&>6:00 you're <{2><[2>not going to be drink drivers of course worried about that you should also be thinking about your car perhaps it's something we take for granted until something goes wrong as alan was mentioning earlier on and then it's er the automotive technician who has to get it fixed and quickly so your opportunity today to perhaps um prevent some small problem becoming a large one if you give us a ring christchurch double three eight two triple nine and going to putaruru is it putaruru adrian good morning <[1>no there definitely isn't <[2>laughs yes good morning jenny i got a question for alan there <{1><[1>yes it's to do with the um tut er er putting antifreeze in the <.>r radiator <{2><[2>er water <[1>sure adrian <[2>mhm yes now um voc <.>a as you know antifreeze is quite expensive and um tut er <.>w <.>w <.>w <.>w <.>w we've never had um or been in an area where we've had severe frosts so right there wasn't a risk of the <.>r you know the water freezing mhm so what i've done instead is i've put in a soluble <&>pronounced as solable a water soluble <&>pronounced as solable oil for many <{><[>years <[>oh yes yeah yeah and <.>i <.>th of course this <&>7:00 this stops the corrosive action between um aluminium and cast iron mm i presume <{><[>laughs you might need to check me up there <[>oh it's <.>it <.>n yeah <{><[>it's <.>not <[><.>a um <.>but <.>that and it lubricates the water pump and you know stops <.>it <.>it the <.>y any er rust er particles gumming up the radiator core of course mm now um can you tell me um what the um voc er safe bottom end um voc er voc er <.>th what i'm talking about is if the car was parked out in a in a voc a more severe frost mm would the water soluble <&>pronounced as solable oil <,> <{><[>er mixed with the radiator water of course <[>definitely not yeah would that stop the um er process of the water freezing no it <{><[><.>wouldn't <[>no i'm i'm <.>d pretty sure that you'd have a problem very sure <{><[>er <[><.>w would it tend to lessen it though er exhales i technically i couldn't answer that <{><[>er because soluble oil <.>t i used to use it myself years and years and years ago <[>oh yes um but nowadays we tend to go <&>8:00 for tut likely cool long life coolant stuff you know you pour it in and it lasts two years or twenty <.>thous twenty thousand ks yes now um i would suggest that swallows if you're any doubt of having er frost then i would suggest that you change from soluble oil <.>i and use an antifreeze or long life coolant <{><[>it will do more than what your soluble oil's doing <[><.>b yes um you know it it's really a small cost it really is a small cost er to save the life of your hoses your frost plugs your water pump really i'd suggest that you do that yes mm well <.>th the only disadvantage i can think of with soluble <&>pronounced as solable oil would be an extreme frost yes like i say i'd er exhales i'm going back a wee way now when we used to use it quite a lot especially when you used to fit a new water pump it used to they used to <{><[>recommend put soluble oil in <[>yes yes lubricate that er carbon <{><[>carbon seal in there but er nowadays i think they're plastic so er there's not that not the cause to worry about putting soluble oil in <[>yeah <&>9:00 mm were you ringing from your car are you adrian voc voc <.>i i'm in a big er workshop <{1><[1>yeah <{2><[2>a lot of road noise outside <[1>oh right <[2>mm yes <{1><[1>i can hear the cars going by <{2><[2>all the <{3><[3>sound effects yeah <[1>yes <[2>yeah <[3>mm timber trucks laughs <{><[><.>ha has that answered your question do you think so is <.>i what you're saying here alan is voc is you don't really need it it's just <[>yeah well we used to use it years ago <{><[>and um you know i'm not saying there's anything wrong with it but i couldn't say to you no it's not going to freeze <[>mm right nah answered your question adrian well almost i just <{><[>wondered you know voc er er <.>w what the <.>b the bottom end um tut <[>voc the <{><[>the temperature you mean <[>er performance of it was whether it would er be okay in a mild frost but not in a severe one that's really what i'm asking yeah well unfortunately i can't answer that no because er practically i haven't used it for the last maybe ten years laughs tut but you know not to say that you're not doing anything wrong <{><[>but er you could create a problem <[>mm yes <&>10:00 er but having said that if it's only a mild frost as long as you start it up and just let it run for a few minutes and then shut it down once you've stopped circulation temperature will build up yes when it's only a mild frost then you're gonna actually er defrost that water anyway yes tut all right <{1><[1>save any problems <{2><[2>thanks very much for your call this morning <[1>thank you <[2>okay bye <{><[>bye <[>double three eight two triple nine is the number to ring in christchurch and moving to kirwee and saying good morning to margaret oh good morning how are you today good thanks um three months ago alan we had a um an eighty six commodore holden commodore repowered with a diesel motor <{><[>mhm <[>an l d twenty eight and we've been very happy with that um there is one problem that it drones and there's a lot of vibration <{><[>and we've been back to the specialist who um who advertised this diesel repowered specialist <[>mhm mhm and they've agreed that there is a problem that they can't find it and we're both at a dead end <{><[>um as to where we go we've tried various engine <&>11:00 mount replacements exhaust um updating the exhaust and we've spent over four thousand dollars on the total conversion <[>oh right we wondering about a second opinion a consultant <{><[>um where do we go from here <[>mhm right okay um l d twenty eight to er listeners is a nissan diesel motor which is er good quality doesn't give many problems the um <,> thing that i would er suggest possibly is that er is the exhaust a one one piece system no we had it changed because it was presenting a problem it's now got a uniflex joint <{><[>up the front <[>oh right yep and a muffler underneath and a rear muffler as well and that did help right but there's still a bad drone vibration coming <{><[>er through the motor <[><.>it still sounds like then you've got something that's too tight <&>11:48
