<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side two <&>0:22 okay now tell me something about your <{><[>hair <[>well i don't know i mean i've had it like this for a while now and i just don't know if it's gonna grow much longer cos <.>that's i've been mostly trying to grow it and i was thinking whether it <.>would it actually suits me a bit shorter but i don't know how short i need to go i <.>just is there any reason for having it long just to see how long i can get it really <{><[>laughs <[>laughs it's not for sort of practability <.>or clears throat no easier for you to manage well no it's actually not too hard to manage but i'm just getting a <.>bit the only thing i can do with it like this is sort of have it in a pony tail or have it in a clip er and er voc unless you can suggest something where i <&>1:00 <.>can interesting i can do with it now your hair texture's obviously naturally curly yeah okay clears throat yep this is voc completely natural at the moment <{><[>there's <.>nothing <[>um how curly would your hair go if it was shorter um <{><[>NOT as yeah um the shorter the straighter basically i've had it in a bob before and it was sort of WAVY <[>you must have had it <.>short shorter at some stage yeah when it gets shorter than that it just um just sort of goes wavy is that right yeah it doesn't curl up quite curly no it looks as if it would wouldn't it yeah unless i'm doing something to it wrong when it's short um but no i don't think so now your short fringe <{><[>what's the reason for that <[>yeah i don't know well i don't know if <{><[>i could do with not having one i <.>s i started <.>grow when i started growing my hair long i <.>started started growing um my fringe out but you know it sort of got to the half way stage and <.>i i just didn't want to take it any further <[>it's something that you just sort of cut that out to <.>your okay how often are you washing your hair every second day <&>tape cuts out <&>2:00 obviously using quite good products are we um schwarzkopf very good shampoo laughs okay lets have a look <&>tape goes funny <{><[>is it not working <[>word if it's recording why not do you mean we've got to go through this again <{><[>laughs <[>laughs no we'll just <{><[>carry <.>on <.>on <[>well hold on i'll just have a listen to it <,> the light's not going up and down no i know that's what i mean HAAAAAA they're interviewing on tape <{><[>so i'm a superstar <[>yep have a listen see if it's <{><[>working <[>on tape <&>tape stopped and restarted two seconds right where were we tut okay so let's just go through your hair look at your texture of the hair <{><[>clears throat <,,> so you feel as though you'd like to <.>keep continue growing it <[>mhm well <{><[>yeah <[>or you feel as though you just need a bit of a change exhales i don't think it's gonna get much longer than this i've never had it this <.>long longer than this before um and <.>i i'm sort <.>of i have been growing it just to see how far i can go and this might be just about it and yeah i've just basically sort of got a bit bored with it yeah it does get to a length where you just can't do anything with <{1><[1>it er admittedly it gets longer <{2><[2>but it's not really gonna do anything <{3><[3>not gonna sort of affect your bone structure <{4><[4><.>or you've got to look <{5><[5>at things like your own posture your own build clears throat um and then sort of look at your hairstyle from there <[1>yeah <[2>mm <&>3:00 <[3>yeah <[4>mm <[5>yeah <{><[>mm <[>if you're pulling your hair up and doing clears throat different looks with it yeah it's not so bad <.>y sometimes you need the look <{><[>filling it you know <[>yeah yeah that's one thing i do like about long hair is that you CAN have lots of different styles and <.>that you know when it's short that's about all that you can do with it so i DO sometimes put it up like that and <{><[>in a ponytail or in a low ponytail or in a clip or a plait or things <.>but <[>yeah of course once you go to something a little bit shorter you're a bit restricted yeah and of course with the texture of your hair as well clears throat um you're gonna create a lot of volume to your <{><[>hairstyle is that right is that what happens with your hair <[>yep yep cos i did have it in <.>a in a sort of a bob a few years ago and it was you know yeah goes <{><[>this way <[>laughs <[>laughs laughs clears throat <{1><[1>so the longer your <.>hair the longer your hair the BETTER because it's gonna pull <{2><[2>that weight <[1>yeah i won't be doing that again <[2>yeah yeah this is also the first time i've had it <&>4:00 long without being layered i've had it long a couple of times and it was always layered and that was just the same sort of thing more volume right so i think i'll keep to <.>the the one length because of the condition of your <.>hair i mean i feel as though your condition of your hair is excellent <{1><[1>you know <.>considering considering its length <{2><[2>you're obviously looking after it very well inhales um and also because you're possibly a student you haven't got a lot of time to spend on your hair is that right <[1>word <[2>yeah yeah <{><[>yeah <[>laughs <{><[>laughs <[>so I think you're better to keep your hair at the longer level yeah and maybe just keep it trimmed keep it tidy right at a regular <{1><[1>time um regular intervals <{2><[2>probably every six weeks how often are you getting it trimmed now <[1>yeah <[2>mm laughs not often <{><[>enough <[>this is on tape remember i know <{><[>laughs um well i had my hair cut about couple of months ago um a <.>frie sometimes i get a friend to trim it so that's better than nothing i suppose but i had it cut um professionally a few months ago and um <,> the hairdresser that i used to have at voc that salon wasn't there and i asked if she was still working there and they said no that she'd just got married and i asked how old her kid was and they said oh that he'd just turned two <&>5:00 and she was pregnant last time i had my haircut <[>laughs oh <{1><[1>dear dear laughs so okay i think from this stage i think REALLY you need to have a professional cut <{2><[2>clears throat and maybe if you just take off <,> a small amount of hair which will just bring your hair <{3><[3>back to <.>its to an evenness where <{4><[4><.>your your hair when it <.>doe when it IS out well at least it'll <{5><[5>move it'll swing <[1>laughs yeah laughs <[2>laughs <[3>yeah <[4>mm <[5>yeah yeah <{><[>yep <[>it'll be a lot healthier as well <{><[>the only thing <.>i <[>so do you reckon i should <,> <{><[>grow my fringe out <[>i'm <.>not yeah i'm not too happy about <{><[>that fringe <[>yeah no it's a bit messy <.>and when you're looking at proportions with your length of <{1><[1>hair that's way out of <{2><[2>balance <[1>YEAH <[2>yeah <,> tut tut <{><[>mm <[>okay <.>well so i <{><[>think you <.>nee you need <.>to <[>but what do i do when i'm trying to grow it out though when it's sort <.>of just grow it out and <{1><[1><.>just voc eventually it'll start to blend <{2><[2>in with the rest of it if you wanted to you could actually pull out a very soft very fine <,> word <[1>yeah <[2>yeah oh yeah yeah to me it's <{><[>just way out of proportion <[>yeah mm so i'd change that oh <{1><[1>okay okay that doesn't <{2><[2>sound too bad <[1>word that out <[2>get this <.>trimmed tidied up <{><[>mm <[>yeah <&>6:00 tut and then just carry on like you're doing <{><[>i think it's fine it suits you yeah <[>yep okay that sounds good um is <.>it voc should i use a better conditioner at the moment i'm just using shampoo and a spray in conditioner cos i find that the spray in stuff makes it go curlier yeah <{1><[1>you should use <.>all it should be a three way <,> <{2><[2>thing yeah <[1>word <[2>you should use other conditioner as well you should use shampoo conditioner tut and moisturiser same as how you treat your skin right oh yeah um you cleanse you tone <{1><[1>you <.>moist you moisturise sniffs so <{2><[2>you need to use a conditioner as well especially these ends <{3><[3>and then maybe once a week coughs you use a deep penetrating type <{4><[4>conditioner especially at the ends of your hair <[1>yeah <[2>okay <[3>yeah <[4>yeah yeah <{><[>okay <[>and THOSE are things you can do at home <{><[>yourself <[>yeah yep okay? okay that's good and the schwarzkopf is it good schwarzkopf's an excellent product okay all right? <{><[>so <.>keep <[>yep that's excellent word so just keep moving in with <{1><[1>your products and working your products and there are voc different ranges of products you can use there's quite a wide variety of products that you <{2><[2>can be using in your hair <[1>yeah <[2>mhm <&>7:00 right should <.>i should <.>i so for the spray in one i should focus on a moisturising one cos they're not all moisturising are they or are they all most of them are moisturising clears throat um yeah and <{1><[1><.>the word in your case that's what you need your hair lacks moisture <{2><[2>after a while <[1>cos i <.>thought <[2>mm yep <,> right especially in the summer months <{><[>anyway <[>yeah okay so <.>i cos I thought using a conditioner and a spray in conditioner would be too much but it wouldn't be no one's a cream um which would probably <{><[>penetrate the hair better the idea of a moisturiser leave in conditioner is that you <.>can it's working in your hair all day <[>yeah <.>right yeah yeah and it's very light it's not <{><[>gonna weigh your hair down <[>yeah mhm all right SOME moisturisers ARE cream and <{1><[1>i find that just a bit too heavy for <{2><[2>certain types of hair and they just weigh the hair down and it gets a bit gluggy after a while and feels too heavy on the head <[1>yeah <[2>yeah mm okay <&>pronounced ockay okay yep that's really good thanks and hopefully we see you shortly <{><[>yep i'll come in for a trim <[>laughs <&>7:53
