<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side two <&>0:12 and like i've NEVER been out of new zealand before and i want to know about how to take um money because they did suggest that we could set up an account but i'm not gonna be there for very <.>long like a bank account tut how long will you be in <{><[>america for <[>UM <,> i'll be at camp for NINE weeks but probably another three months after that as well <.>so right three months in the same spot? NO i'll be travelling okay so we know NINE weeks in the same spot you're right it CERTAINLY wouldn't be worthwhile to take um open up a bank account mainly because <.>getting the situation in america a lot of the banks are small um there isn't a NATIONwide network mm of ONE particular banking group in sufficient towns where <.>y if you had a cheque <&>1:00 account that you could open <.>funds er take <.>out draw funds from that account over the states so you've got um <,> THREE options you can either take a set <.>am er amount in cash which would be advisable to get you started but CERTAINLY you wouldn't want to take excessive amounts in <{><[>cash <[>mm would <.>that is that travellers cheques do you mean <{><[>or cash cash right okay <[>no CASH yep and you could then do TWO other aspects you can either tut lodge the balance of your funds into a credit card account <,> and then you can draw from that credit card account sums of money as you wish <{><[>inhales <[>so that's <.>like you know how you said there's not a nationwide bank but putting it into your credit card means that you can use your credit card in any sort of <,> <{><[>machine <[>at any sort of bank well <.>or mainly you'd go through a bank because of course your credit card would be a new zealand issued one yeah and wouldn't <.>be i er would doubt you would find it would <.>use be used <.>at or useful at er bank machines or money tellers <{1><[1>and so on <,> tut it would be a situation where you would <&>2:00 go to a bank er you would have <.>m normally <.>a a visa card is by certainly the most common one used and you'd take a cash advance against that visa account tut inhales the advantage in that particular system is that your credit card <.>company because your account will be in <&>telephone rings CREDIT will actually pay you interest <{2><[2>on your money <,> the DISadvantage is that credit cards um use a LOWER exchange rate than <{3><[3>what is the CURRENT exchange <.>rate so say for example the exchange rate for the u s is fifty three right now the rate that the credit card company would be using would be say fifty one point five or fifty <{4><[4>two at the <.>ma at the <.>best because the reason is they have to put a BUFFER cos they draw that fund out of your account not imMEDiately there is a period of time later <{5><[5>and the currencies change in between so that's the <.>o one option then <.>there's the OTHER option would <.>be is travellers cheques <,> tut the <&>3:00 advantage in the travellers cheques <&>telephone rings is a that not only banks but also shops or hotels will cash them um so you have greater flexibility in where you can USE them <[1>right <[2>right <[3>right <[4>mm <[5>mm mm um and the um exchange rate that you buy it at is a SET rate so it's not gonna fluctuate you've known what it's cost you to buy that money and then it's just a <&>telephone rings situation of going out and spending the OTHER aspect I always like about er travellers cheques is that um as the <.>currency as you SPEND it the currency actually just appears so you <{1><[1>can actually <.>get disappears <{2><[2>so in other words you can CONTROL <{3><[3>what you're spending <[1>what sorry? <[2>yeah <[3>right you <{1><[1>can physically see it you <{2><[2>mean <[1><.>wh <[2>you see it <{><[>gone exactly where with a credit you're always in a situation where it's a hidden amount <[>yeah yeah you have NO idea what the cost of the holiday <{><[>is <[>right yeah so voc i <.>use PREFER to recommend that you use credit card as a back up er but you actually carry the funds with you yeah um if you record your serial numbers of your <&>4:00 travellers cheques you'll have no problems if you have them lost or stolen getting them replaced yep um the trick is of course is knowing WHAT the serial numbers of the travellers cheques the AMOUNT and the VALUE of the travellers cheques each coupon what its value is and then just keep a record <.>as as you SPEND them <{><[>so that if er at any time you can say right i've spent this many and this is what i've got left <[>right mm tut help? YEAH no <{1><[1>that's good i <.>think it's really HARD for when you first go overseas you just don't know ANYthing about making <{2><[2>travel arrangements or <.>just i just feel like a real <,> ignorant but um <{3><[3>tut <[1>laughs coughs <[2>laughs <[3>that's all right <,> i actually did work in a camp oh did you voc like what you're looking at doing <{><[>yeah yeah <[>mm yeah i did it in colorado right voc in a camp up there for er twelve months oh you worked for TWELVE months mm i'm just working for nine weeks was it through what um because i KNOW in new zealand you can go through camp counsel or camp america <{><[>or there's another organisation <&>5:00 <[>mm well <.>this i worked with the y m c a camp tut it's actually the largest y m c a camp in the world and when i worked there the camp <&>telephone rings could accommodate four THOUSAND people MY GOD and we had everything from a resident artist through to its own bowling alley to its own hospital tut wow to um an olympic size swimming pool so it was an <.>AMAZING it was a complete village its own post <{><[>office um its own craft centre <.>and <[>yeah and you got a visa for a whole year obviously <{><[>yeah <[>mm <.>so cos we get a visa just for the <.>time to work JUST for the time when we're at camp yep when we <.>finish it's INVALUABLE <{1><[1>well worth it <{2><[2>you know it's <.>a an AMAZING experience <[1>mm <[2>mm MM so don't miss out on it NO i'm not going to well i'm actually going in about SIX WEEKS and i've <.>just <.>just just realised i've got all these little things that i don't know anything about that i've got to find out about and find the best way <.>to to deal with it but um tut all right? yeah yeah that's good <&>6:00
