<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side two <&>7:33 did you travel round the states afterwards <{><[>or did you just word <[>tut inhales during that year? no i did travel when i was <{><[>there <[>what sort <.>of like i'm thinking of either getting a DELTA pass which <.>is i think it's three ninety <.>nine which means you can <{><[>travel on <.>that <[>what a standby pass <{><[><.>or <,> mhm <[>YEAH travel around on that but the thing is the ticket that i'm thinking of getting is a <.>one no return to london <.>i with four stops tut right <{><[>yeah <[>stopovers in AMERICA mhm tut but the thing i'm having trouble with is because i haven't BEEN there i don't <&>8:00 know what <.>stopovers like i know two definite that i NEED to do on the way there but on the way back i'm not <.>sh <.>s cos i was sort of thinking i'll probably meet some people and i'll <,> go and visit THEM on the <{><[>way back OR i'll get a DELTA pass and not worry about the stopovers cos i don't know WHERE i <.>want cos i don't know ANYTHING about the states i don't know where i want to go or ANYthing <.>so inhales <[>okay well <.>you're lets recap a bit you've got six weeks on the course NINE weeks nine weeks okay so you've got nine weeks there inhales when you go to the u k or europe are you then going one way and staying there or are you eventually coming back to <{><[>new zealand <[>no well i've <.>bought <&>pronounced brought the thing is i'm going to see what the job situation is like in england inhales and if i can get a job <.>or and things like that then i'll stay and i'll just voc <,> forget <.>about you know count my losses for the <{><[>return ticket <[>okay are you under age voc twenty seven yeah okay inhales DON'T buy a return ticket tut buy a one way ticket mm <&>9:00 work on the basis that um tut you leave <.>b er behind in new zealand sufficient funds to cover the return one way fare right inhales keep a copy of your <.>ticket leave a photocopy of your ticket that you <.>su buy on your one way it will ONLY cost around two hundred dollars more to buy another one way ticket to come home than if you'd bought a round <{><[>trip ticket <[>right the THING IS that also you need to have two thousand pounds to get into england and <{><[>i DON'T have <,> that much it depends if i can get my visa limit increased <[>sure tut <{><[><.>that <.>that <[>for available credit but i <.>don't i don't think i've got ENOUGH to <.>actually <,> actually get IN that's why i sort of bought a return ticket <{><[><,> for safety <[>if you left behind though the value of that <.>re second part of the ticket mm would that help <,> towards that two thousand pounds mm probably i'd say <{><[>yeah <[>see that's <.>the that's the way I would do it the <.>re um <,> CERTAINLY by all means you've got your nine weeks in the u <.>s whereabouts in the u s tut new york state <&>10:00 okay <,> voc <.>i <.>i <,> REALLY the emphasis on your trip in this case should be u k europe mm with your nine week stop <,> RATHER than trying to explore the rest of the u s mm i would LEAVE it er and maybe take an opportunity of scheduling <.>a maybe another two to three weeks at the END of your <,> nine week <{1><[1>er counselling course inhales because there WILL be people you'll meet and that you'll want to catch up with <{2><[2>afterwards so if you schedule say two weeks after that where you go and meet with their family and <.>friends <{3><[3>americans that you meet and spend some time with them tut but then GO through to the u k the reason being is a the majority of the cost of your ticket is getting to the u k and europe <[1>mm <[2>mm <[3>mm mm GET that out of your <.>system get there find a job and so on east coast u s a is very <.>acs <&>microphone noise accessible and is going to be very cheap to get to in the future <{><[>from u k if you DON'T and things don't work out and <&>11:00 you come back to new zealand because of the competition on the new zealand to u s a flight routes it's ALWAYS going to be cheap enough to get to the states <[>mm mm BUT you may not get back to u k and europe again so <{><[>er <[>what for being too old or <{><[>for just not being able to <.>get <[>no not word not necessarily being too old but it's ALWAYS that extra eight nine <{1><[1>hundred dollars on the <{2><[2>cost <[1>right <[2>to get there mm yeah and it's ALSO another ten hours worth of flying yeah and you don't <.>think i mean <.>y people don't think of going up to london and europe for a two week holiday but you go up to voc the states for a two week holiday right yeah so <.>you it's always accessible to go up and have a short break up there but when you go to u k and europe you're looking at REALLY to make it worthwhile a MONTH to THREE months and you know when you're back in new zealand or in the u k working whatever how often are you gonna have month to three month holiday breaks right so <{><[>you know <.>that's <.>y your emphasis <.>is voc you should be concentrating on u k europe <[>mm <[>laughs yeah <&>12:00 SAVE your money HAVE your nine week course schedule another couple of weeks and say right i've got a budget for that mm tut THEN <,> go across to the u k europe GIVE it your best shot and see if you can get jobs and all the rest of it and do your bit there and if you can't you've <{1><[1>still got your return fare <.>in at home in <{2><[2>new zealand <[1><.>start <[2>mm come back yeah and you know the <.>states the rest of the states will always be accessible <{><[>to you <[>mm it's just all so confusing laughs oh terribly <{1><[1>confusing well <.>the ANOTHER thing is that i'm going <.>and because i've still got a bit of <.>a this is the REAL <.>story is that i've got <.>s um sort of some of my student loan to pay off that's why i wasn't thinking of doing the big thing to london YET because i don't think that i can work in london earn enough money to pay off my loan at the same time AND earn enough to live AND then travel <{2><[2>so that's why i thought well if i get a ticket to um just go and visit some of my cousins and friends in london and stuff and <.>then <&>13:00 <[1>laughs <[2>mm tut come back mm come back maybe work here OR i was thinking if i could work illegally in america as a nanny or <{1><[1>something or in canada then i think my main thing is to um get a job when i finish <.>ca travel round a <{2><[2>then get a job it's sort of that money <[1>mm <[2>mm mm tut well still you know i mean if you're looking at maybe going back again to the u k europe in a year afterwards or two years <{><[>afterwards i would still <.>then you know the friends and contacts you're going to <.>make tut after that year <.>o being your counselling <[>yeah mm they will gel into REAL friends mm and you will really know which ones you want to go back and spend some time with right er so i'd still would stick to my original er suggestion one way to london <.>yea well <.>i in your case no make it a return <{><[>now because you've got your commitments back here that you've got financially and er <[>yeah YEAH i mean like the student <{1><[1>loan is on <.>a <{2><[2>quite <.>a <[1>and <[2><.>it's but DON'T go for the air pass to whip around <.>eur er the states states yeah still <.>s put that money <&>pronounced as mohney into <.>s spending it in <&>14:00 <{><[>u k and europe and spending the time there <[>mm mm tut mm that's really interesting advice <{><[>yeah yeah i had thought of that the fact that <.>it's you know america's more easily accessible <[>it's good because it's <.>just yeah inhales cos it is a <{><[><.>long <[>cos they haven't <.>got you haven't got that time limit <,> <{><[>thing but um <.>t have <.>you voc do you know much about working illegally and <.>what <.>like <[>mm tut in the <{><[>states? <[><.>you you hear of VARIOUS stories of people who go there and have spent you know two years nannying and have had a whale of a time and <.>ha had NO problems and then you've <.>heard like the other week i heard this woman who got NEARLY caught and she just had to flee <,> <{><[>really quickly <[>mm <,> well that's the problem you know voc i guess <,> tut um if you're a labourer or a tradesperson <&>pronounced as tradesperdson or something like that and you're just doing sort of the odd job <{><[>as you're working your way across the states it's NOT gonna be a big deal <[>mm mm but IF you're actually wanting to have a STABLE job where you're staying in one place and doing it <,> the odds are gonna be a lot HIGHER that you're gonna get caught out mm <&>15:00 you CERTAINLY are not gonna be paid as well because they realise that they've got YOU <,> <{><[>in a situation um tut and <.>it it's a difficulty that you know you've got to be CONSCIOUS of WHO you talk <.>abou talk to <[>mm <[>mm mm WHAT you talk about and so <.>on i don't think <,> it's worth it to stuff it up if you know what i mean tut is <.>it do <.>y are you not advising <{><[><.>to <[>yeah <.>i <.>i i <.>mean to work <{><[>there <[>if you <.>j just wanting to do a little bit here and there as you make your way across yeah that's fine and i don't think you'll have any problem BUT <{><[>if you <[>but what about if i was in a nanny sort of situation where a family could say can you come and work <.>f with me for SIX months <.>or tut <.>we <{><[>well don't you see i mean then in that sort of situation <,> you CAN get it through the u s embassy here <[><.>wh what do you SAY <.>when right er <{1><[1>get a <,> a <.>s get a situation <{2><[2><.>where <[1>what jobs? <[2>you get permission yeah on a shortterm basis <,> <{><[>er but you know voc if er <,> tut yeah i <.>j i <.>just <&>16:00 <.>it's the trouble with AMERICA is that IF you get caught <[>yeah you can't <{><[>go back yeah <[>THAT'S it er well you know you're looking at a situation where you will NOT ever be trusted again mm and is it worth it JUST to have a six month job is it <{><[>maybe not better to um be in a situation where um you know you either SAVE up the extra money or you do it properly and apply for american <.>citizen <&>pronounced as <.>citizition citizenship <[>mm which is really hard though isn't it tut yeah it's not easy but what you CAN do is though go through to the canada and that's a lot easier and <{1><[1>then from canada you can get your green cards and go across the <{2><[2>border to work <[1>yeah <[2>yeah because the thing is i'm <.>a a photographer <{1><[1>and with a trade like that i think that it's EASIER because you can say well <,> <.>what <{2><[2>what they do and <.>they yeah and you can say well i want this person cos they've got that sort of <{3><[3>style and that there's no one in america or no one <{4><[4>word who's got <.>that so i think maybe it <{5><[5>could possibly be easier i don't know <[1>mm <[2>it's an art <[3>coughs <[4>coughs <&>17:00 <[5>yeah see i mean you know <.>you voc <.>you <&>17:02
