<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>0:36 now minutes of last week's <,> meeting <,,> <.>anybody are they okay <,,> yvonne can i just say that i didn't get any minutes so <.>i <,> <{><[>i usually get them sent to me <,> <.>this <[>right <.>i ah well that <{><[>that would have been me i <&>1:00 didn't know that <[>and it happened <.>that and i think that patricia gets <{><[>them too mm that's right <[>yes <,> right um well i'll um <,,> i'll get nicola to do a couple of extra copies thank you <,,> or actually maurice will have them if you ask marie to do a <{><[>couple of extra copies <,> right well if it's the minutes okay matters arising the only one that I identified was the er information for masters <,> students is i don't know whether there's anything else anyone <,,><&>3 voc <[>okay word maurice robertson was going to look into that for us yes so we'll just have to leave <{><[>that <,> till next week <,,><&>4 the locked store room there's no <,> further problem with that is there <[>clears throat <&>2:00 <{><[>voc <[>no <,,><&>3 just in connection can i just mention with the um information for masters students though i probably really ought to talk to um maurice and karen about that there was er a mention in the staff circular last friday that there's going to be a two hour seminar which the graduate students i think have organised for themselves <,> over in the student union <.>b building on <.>s saturday so i thought i'd go along to that because there may well be things like grievances <,> and grievance procedures come up so i'll have a talk to dan about that so i'll report back to that next week inhales reports from managers michael <,,> tut um clears throat everything seems to be <&>3:00 flowing quite smoothly <,> there's no real problems that are on <.>our on our plate at the moment <,> we're just working towards our publications for nineteen ninety four <,> um other than that everything's okay inhales um yes i'm <.>s your section's making me suffer at the moment but i'm i'm one inch through my two inch <,> pile of letters for the fees office <,> i hope to knock off the other inch today i've decided not to count them but i did measure them and they're JUST under two inches we'll take you out for lunch for that thank you how kind <{><[>laughs <[>but then i won't have any strength <{1><[1>left for this <{2><[2>lift a cup of coffee i don't think that's word <,,> pam <[1>laughs <[2>laughs um tut right well <.>we've approaching <,> deadlines <.>for we've passed the deadline for the enrolment handbook <,> um all we're really waiting for now is the the <,> er final details <&>4:00 from politics who seem to have some issues with with what was printed i think there's something between sandra and maureen camp slipped down the cracks and anyway we're in the process of getting that sorted out i had to ASSURE maureen that helen knew exactly what it was all about and that she would sort it out please just let us have the information back <{><[>um <[>is this timetabling <{><[>tabling <[>timetabling mm so that's good and in the information handbook we'll have we'll have the v u w timetable and the course schedule we'll have the courses being offered at the c i t separately the wellington polytechnic separately and the wellington college of education we'll put them all under separate headings and their courses they're offering and the timetable for each course will be detailed under a separate heading so it should be nice and clear for everybody and <,,> <&>5:00 we'll probably add as much information under each heading as we can about ensuring that they know which institution to enrol at etcetera <,> um so that's looking pretty good <,> the enrolment preenrolment forms are beginning to look more complicated everyday as we sort of manage to slip out of larry <.>meyer's mayer's simple format and got back into putting everything that <{1><[1>everybody wants it and everybody <{2><[2>needs so we'll see how those go um <,> but they should they should be pretty good um so that's it and EXAMS exams are coming along the timetable er the rooming and everything is all all well underway <,> um what else have we got that's about it we're really now setting out to pack preenrolment material once it's it's printed so it's all go um we're busy but you know everything's well in hand <&>6:00 <[1>oh <[2>laughs so <.>we we're doing <,,> all packing here or? <.>y all the RETURNING students <{1><[1>those are the students in nineteen ninety three will be done at gallaghers we're having rather a nice little envelope that everything will go into this year and the returning students' preenrolment forms will be preprinted and the little package will have a square cut die you know die cut hole in it for the address and they will be cellowrapped at gallaghers again because of the the bits open um the rest will just be enveloped and packed HERE we'll get a team of people to pack them here we did last year and it seemed to work very well and they're even they're much simpler this year without um maurice's allowances and loans material so we'll do that here and they'll all <{2><[2>go out well they'll all be ready to go out at the beginning of october <,> <&>7:00 <[1>oh <[2>oh right tut i can't think of any any problems that should arise unless all the printing goes haywire <,> clears throat we we cannot rely on the ministry to have the <{1><[1>material to us so we're we're working by mail this year where students will <{2><[2>request information from us <[1>yeah <[2>right the <.>rates if there's double mailing costs then presumably <,,><&>3 <.>that yeah <.>i is there money for that <{><[>too yeah <[>well i've i've i've spoken to uga and mary mcdonald and they're prepared to pick up the tab for <{><[>for postage paid see how those go <[>oh marie <,> how are <{><[>you <[>um well patricia has gone over to liaison <,> this week and sandra's gone into patricia's <,,><&>3 for um half past eight till twelve each day we interviewed and took on a girl called kath <,,> johnson i was going to say but <,> it's just kath at <&>8:00 <.>th this stage who seems an EXTREMELY good person and i think will be very good for other people and later on she's um tut she starts on friday and she's got an arts degree and double major and she's <,> doing <{1><[1>word papers she was a student <{2><[2>here mm <[1>was she a student here <[2>so she's sort of broken in to being <{><[>a student <[>yes she knows the background of the institution and um <,> right <.>that's so she's <,,><&>3 is she <.>w she's fulltime <{><[>is she or is she parttime <[>tut no she's only going to work er half past eight to twelve mm up until december word um i think we're going to have a bit of a problem actually because they're talking about <.>going mary um <,,> tut from c s c tut was <.>com in yesterday talking about getting on with degree audit which means that harriet's going <&>9:00 to be taken out too for <,,> a half a day <,,><&>3 for every day of the week so things are going to be fair to middling for a while but that's just floating at <{1><[1>present but it's something that'll need to get looked <{2><[2>at <[1>right <[2>yeah well that's something she'll have to talk over with jenny <{><[>talk over with jenny word <[>mm mm i don't think she realises the implications of just saying right we'll do this we'll do that <,> anyway <,> <{><[>er <[>right so is patricia going to liaison um every morning yes every <{><[>morning <[>cos i understood she was actually going for full <.>day oh that's right she's going <{><[>word <[>she's <.>ha she's there till twelve oclock each day which she's finding very difficult actually to come back and <{><[><,> word mm <[>yes word very disruptive not <{><[><.>much <[>um the degree audit bibles are <.>print being printed and we're having a meeting at half past two this afternoon to <,> talk over <,> what's to be done right tut i think that's all that i can report on <,,><&>3 right <&>10:00 i think maurice's actually first <.>his i see something he's got something here about his um trouble with architecture <&>next utterance addressed to ES who is arriving late come on in <&>sighs sorry should i mention that that we're helping liaison as well <,> um by helping them out at a bank seminar tonight seminar tonight right at least you don't have to go to new plymouth no all laugh i'm <,> feeling quite lucky all laugh you got my job did i right so <.>y are <.>yo you're going i'm going yes yes laughs right um esther while you get your breath back um can i break it to you that um this meeting's being recorded as part of oh <{><[>yes <[>janet holmes' research project on use of new zealand english yep yes so if you'd like to breathe very deeply <{><[>you're just in time for you to give your report <&>11:00 <[>laughs oh goodness <,> i've got jet lag laughs <,> um clears throat actually nothing much except <,> our office is totally depleted because of the liaison <,> um yes funny that problem word so i <.>we i went i did the expo <,> first day of the expo yesterday in new plymouth laughs it was absolutely disastrous we had <.>to i had to get a flight <{1><[1>to auckland to get back to new plymouth <{2><[2>laughs so i got there half an hour after the thing started but um <,> and kit and vivian are up there for the next two days <,> but apart from that um <[1>coughs <[2>laughs <[2>oh did you that's sort of an expo for secondary schools <{><[>is it or senior <.>s <[>yes no all <{><[>secondary schools it's about um six hundred to a thousand <,,> a day going through it's worthwhile being there but um it's unfortunate that that it was so rushed for us anyway <,> it's all under <&>12:00 control now and um tut beth <,> disappears next week for her first south east asian experience laughs that's why i kept her back this week laughs crisis control laughs um otherwise everything's going fine <,> i think <,,> <[>yes right tut right <,,> well if i give a um <,,><&>3 i've prepared a little report um <.>last since last meeting i've been to a meeting which jenny asked me to go to of it's an informal little committee the working group working with students with DISABILITIES <,> um we were talking about whether it should continue as a <,> permanent <,,><&>3 <.>meeti um committee as part of the sort of STRUCTURE of committees and <&>13:00 i think it's a group that really ought to <,> ought to be set up more formally i found it a very interesting meeting um they spent some time with a severely hearing impaired student who came along with her <,> interpreter and this raised a very interesting question in my mind <,> about people such as <.>y people with severe hearing impairment as to how how we cope with them because you know it's it's not a <.>f not an impairment you pick up very easily i don't know when <.>w she suffered the severe hearing loss because she speaks very well i mean she obviously learnt to speak while she could still hear so that you wouldn't tell from i mean she'd be able to front up to a counter okay and speak <,> which wouldn't trigger off in people's minds that <.>she so whether in fact she copes by coming in and saying to people <,> <{><[><.>i'm <&>14:00 <[>is this here is this a student we have <{1><[1>here is she a blonde girl yes we don't have any trouble <{2><[2>with her <[1>yes word yes <.>so <[2>so so she tell yes mm but it was <{1><[1>interesting that you know <.>some i mean i hadn't really stopped to think about that before but it was actually quite interesting watching the interpreter um interpret for her she spoke for herself and then he interpreted what people were responding tut inhales um so um i'm going to report to jenny about this and and that's a committee i'd like to sort of keep on keep on working with um <,> don't know whether that should leave us any um <,,> some of the things they touched on was to do with um <,,><&>3 departmental support for helping students over things like assessment or special xeroxing and things like that sort of internal matters which jess's <&>15:00 going to take up <,> the <.>not not things sort of affecting registry word tut <,,> and <.>one <.>the another one which i went to um which <,> <{2><[2>jenny normally goes to was student union support <,> group which is the one where i picked up that little <,> brochure about workshops <&>next utterance addressed to ES esther pardon me you might be interested in that which was also a very mm that'll be a useful record to go to um <,> i don't know whether people sorry to be fluffing around <[1>mm <[2>coughs do we have this brochure in student records or <.>any anywhere <{1><[1>where we could <{2><[2>keep it <[1>no we don't <[2>yeah word <{1><[1>word <{2><[2>word <[1>yeah <[2>get on their mailing list <{1><[1>word mailing list <{2><[2>and once you tell them <{3><[3>once they'll <{4><[4>sign you up for <{5><[5>life <[1>yeah <[2>yeah? <[3>yeah <[4>so if i word i just <.>just our own supply <[5>yes yes <{><[>students yes <&>16:00 <[>mm because we <.>u <{1><[1>they go like hot cakes <{2><[2>in our office <&>16:06 <[1>yes <[2>mm
