cadet training programme and with that i've completed their retail skills certificate mhm and i've done a which involves um <.>s a <{><[>series <[>does that involve some some marketing and and people people skills <{><[>etcetera etcetera and management <[><.>i is it set like a block course through <{><[>polytech <[>it is yes oh not through polytech sorry <{1><[1>not not done through the <{2><[2>polytech it's their own course and it's twelve <[1>not through <[2>no mhm twelve modules and i've also done a course at polytech a marketing paper mhm at the time i didn't get a was that for an n c b it was yes <{1><[1>i needed the one paper at the time because i had to start on this i couldn't do <{2><[2>the two at the same time <[1>mhm mhm <[2>mhm tut right okay and what i was i was hoping <&>1:00 to do um was the b c a <{><[>um in marketing or management <[>mhm right at victoria that's going to be difficult to start right from the beginning yeah because you'll come into university with special admission mhm um being over twenty and that's the that's what your entrance qualification would be okay so tut <,> b c a say they um do not take anyone into their programme in the first year with um without an entrance qualification right so they say start another degree <{1><[1>do a b a <{2><[2>you can do the same courses that you would do <{3><[3>for b c a and you complete those core requirements <[1>mhm <[2>mhm <[3>yeah yeah if you pass with b grades mhm no fails <{><[>but pass thirty six credits <[>yeah right then you can apply to transfer into commerce tut okay yeah that's what i was <{><[>told <[>and that allows you to go straight into second year commerce right <{><[>that's actually <[>so you're not disadvantaged really good <&>2:00 but you do have to prove yourself at <{1><[1>university laughs so that's <{2><[2>THAT'S <.>th <.>th <{3><[3>the difficulty <[1>that's right so laughs <[2>right <[3>and um one of the things that concerned me it it wouldn't be a problem later on because if i pass which i <.>pr when i pass mm um to be positive about it <{><[>i'd i'd be going into the areas not in economics or money and finance but in management and marketing <[>yes marketing <{><[>mm <[>um one of my big er weaknesses IS math <{1><[1>and i realise that you realise that you have to do two papers um in math <{2><[2>in the beginning you see <[1>mhm <[2>you do yes and with the b average i was i was gonna ask you what options are there that um i know that the <{1><[1>teaching methods are different so it's easier <{2><[2>BUT also the mathematics level is quite high <[1>mm <[2>mm mhm and the expectations are there for the people to have GOOD solid <.>under <{><[>understanding and grounding <[>yes did you do maths in sixth form tut i did fifth form maths in <{><[>sixth form you see so it that's <[>mhm how did you go in that not very well that's the thing <{1><[1>BUT i've i have um become better um through through work <&>3:00 <{2><[2>and with the more <{3><[3>practical side of statistics <[1>mm <[2>mm <[3>tut have you done done any maths as part of the retail skills programme or is only er retailing for profit <{1><[1>er which is <.>s basically working out out <{2><[2>spreadsheets and er word <[1>mhm <[2>right the maths voc you know lack is a problem mm for our b c a degree tut yep um the victoria b c a degree is really set up with a pretty strong maths maths basis in that core yeah um that's in the first <{><[>year <[>b c a see that as important <{><[>for commerce now not all the universities do <[>mm yeah mhm and so i don't know whether you've looked at massey perhaps mm but massey would offer a b b s degree mm that does not have a compulsory maths tut <{><[>component <[>right i was hoping to do er was hoping to do it at victoria <{><[>it's easier yeah yes yeah but i i understand that there are <[>mm i can understand that laughs but i mean you do need think about mm other options as well <{1><[1>if maths is a real <{2><[2>worry for you <[1>yeah <[2>as well i i understand that there are a couple of um math <&>4:00 papers which ARE not as <{><[>testing as some calculus ones <[>mm there are there are two introductory <{><[>papers and those are certainly the ones that you'd look at <[>mm okay the trouble is that even the introductory maths one oh three yeah voc voc i think the general level is they presume a satisfactory sixth form yeah so <.>e <.>e <.>y even for that introductory maths <{><[>voc you you know you could have a slightly shaky background <[>mhm it's quite yeah but you could look at bridging courses mhm er another thing you could look at what what are <.>you you're not at university this year you're <{><[>not doing anything <,> <.>up are you doing any study <[>no no tut not at the present <{1><[1>i've just completed that so <{2><[2>i'm <[1>no <[2>mm sometimes i recommend that you look at correspondence school mhm and just work through the sixth form sets right they will probably enrol you you would have to check with them i don't <{><[>know exactly their rules but you could get enrolled um at the correspondence school to do sixth form maths <[>yeah right you won't get a sixth form certificate because you're starting too late in the <{><[>year but you could go <&>5:00 through and work through as many of those sets as possible <[>yeah yeah mm for your own background knowledge right and preparation cos i know that there's a lot of support out there for people who <{1><[1>who need the help <{2><[2>and <[1>mm <[2>so that's a so sixth form mm maths through correspondence school would be one thing okay the bridging course <{><[>er that we offer in february it's a three week course <[>mhm yeah that TENDS to be a bit of a um reVISion rather than a first time run through right <{><[>yeah <[>so <.>i it's not very long three weeks is not a very LONG course that's right and so you're not going to gain a whole year's maths <{><[>skill in three weeks <[>right yeah but it's a refresher mhm for um for people and it's confidence building as well right yeah the alternative is a massey bridging course mhm um they run extramural courses bridging courses in maths over the holidays right <&>6:00 and they are something that you could also do <{><[>um <[>okay they carry some credit i think <{><[>but i'm not positive about that <[>mm right they carry credit for massey and i understand from our admissions section that they also would carry some credit <.>f for victoria as well <{><[>and that's a bonus <[>tut okay yeah <{><[>yeah <[>you know <.>y you get another six credits okay so you could look at doing the math one oh three and the stat one NINE three <{><[>as your maths and stats option <[>okay right you then have to do a computing course yeah and the usual one is info one one one yep and <{1><[1>that's quite a quite an <{2><[2>interesting course from what i've heard yeah <[1><.>tha <[2>that's yes mm then you've got a free choice one little six credit <{><[>free choice <[>yeah and i was i was looking at um perhaps doing a um <.>l looking at a bachelor of arts option mm er something like history or classical studies <&>7:00 yes classical studies would be better than history mhm because history is only offered as a <.>f as a twelve credit full year <{><[>course <[>oh okay right so classics you could do mhm six credits of <{><[>that and choose roman or greek history <[>and i wanted to so you can actually choose between the two yes oh that's good yeah and do you know whether they study um classical or actual rather than the the plays of the time and the <{><[>and the poetry of the time <[>tut um i think you've got four classics courses yeah there's um a roman social history and a greek society and right literature i think and culture then there is a greek literature course mhm and a greek ART course right so you can choose whichever area mhm you're particularly interested <{><[>in <[>i'll look at the roman history yeah mm yeah okay that <{><[>sounds like a word <[>yes if you're interested in history you could choose one of <{><[>those history sort of options if the second year you did aNOTHer classics course <[>yeah yeah from TWO history classics courses <{><[>you can go on and <&>8:00 do second year history <[>mhm oh okay so <.>i it covers yeah your first year history prerequisite okay <{><[>okay <[>so that's probably the best um sort of way if you're if you're interested in history or <{1><[1>greek and roman <{2><[2>history CHOOSE one <{3><[3>of those and the nice thing is that information systems is offered twice <{4><[4><,> so whichever half of the year say that roman social history is offered <[1>mm <[2>yeah <[3>okay <[4>tut okay yeah you could do info in the other half <{1><[1>mm sometimes it doesn't work out too well you get <{2><[2>landed with HAVing to do greek <{3><[3>um history because <.>y <.>y your whole balance of your course <{4><[4>fits better that way but in your case you can choose <{5><[5>mm that's good <[1>okay <[2>yeah <[3>mm <[4>yeah <[5>excellent so assuming that i er manage to <.>g get the b average <{1><[1>i could switch over now <{2><[2>if i if i didn't for some reason say if if um one area voc i failed in and the average didn't quite pan <{3><[3>out er what can i look at as far as b a <{4><[4>options were concerned word <[1>mhm <[2>IF <,> mm <[3>mm <[4>right <,> well i well i always say yeah that <.>th <&>9:00 the course that we've been talking about is very good basis for a commerce degree yeah but unfortunately it's NOT such a good basis <{><[>for a b a degree <[>for a b a yeah and that's the the um dilemma you really face mhm er you've got to probably in your situation go for your best um first choice <{1><[1><,> which is to get into that commerce degree <{2><[2>and move straight into second year commerce <[1>right <[2>yeah okay er but you should plan a little bit for a contingency <{><[>if you don't get into <[>mm that's right the <.>th that <{><[>um <[>cos i understand that MOST <{1><[1>of the most of the commerce er degree er papers are actually also b a <{2><[2><,> so i could yeah <[1>mm <[2>mm you can do a lot especially in the marketing and management <{1><[1>area which sounds as if it's what you're thinking <{2><[2>of <[1>yeah <[2>mm yeah so yes you can plan it the real difficulty comes in deciding on a major right and that's in the second year well you'll have to <.>s <.>s voc er specify one in your first year okay but you can change it <&>10:00 yeah now now <.>how the way i understand er you correct me if i'm wrong is um if <.>y you take two papers in one particular subject and that becomes your major is that correct um or <.>n not not altogether your major is going to be the one that you fulfil certain rules that are spelt out by the department right <&>10:18
