<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>0:05 guys if you GET any situation similar to that whether it be somebody <.>ex exposing <.>their <.>the their BODY or somebody swearing and cursing at you somebody drugged or somebody drunk or just ANY situation PLEASE PLEASE DON'T let it go okay um DON'T discuss it with somebody else and say do you think i should do anything about it or did you see it um <,> that can all come back afterwards you know in your own mind you saw it what happened or you heard what happened or whatever just grab us straight away so as we can um we've got a fast number to the police one two three so we <.>all which i hope everybody knows it just grab somebody else to to do it to do the ringing for <&>1:00 you okay in this particular case how would it be handled if the guy <,> <.>if would we have held him at the counter we <.>f confront that situation as we go i always think yes we would've tried to hold him chat to him and keep him looking for something else that we <.>could've it would've got difficult probably i don't know but the thing is <,> er DON'T be frightened we've got to do it no matter what the situation be so DON'T work it out to decide with other people how do you think i should handle it just <,> use your gut feeling go for broke you have to don't worry about the fact of um if we tell the police will like something happen to me it WON'T happen cos they don't use your name in this situation <.>g generally they don't need to cos <,> it's not very often somebody like that's going to try and defend themselves anyway in that particular situation of yesterday so yeah DON'T be frightened <,> um just as i say just go for broke <&>2:00 and if you're wrong <,> they get you out of it and they'll get us out of it so so don't worry it's no different to the shop lifter who you think has shoplifted and they show you everything and <,> they haven't shoplifted well just say thanks for cooperating it's no big <,> it's not our job to inhales all right um <,> anything you want to add tracey or think about or talk about in regard to it oh just the fact that it just like it happened so fast <{1><[1>i mean <.>it's you know it probably will like he just bought a pen and i only gave him twenty five cents change or something little like that so it was really sort of <,> just really <{2><[2>happened that fast <[1>yeah <[2>and in that particular case that would've been a very fast <{><[>transaction <[>yeah yeah yeah <,> tut sort of by the time i turned around and sort of then walked towards jan he'd sort of gone laughs wow laughs the big thing is when you get those situations make sure and identify on something now tracey knows he wore a certain type of glasses you think you know his hairstyle don't you <&>3:00 mm his <{1><[1><.>facial yeah so he wore a certain type of glasses and she remembered most of his clothing so you know just fix on something could be he's got a scar there or she's got a scar there or could be a tattoo yeah <.>they <,> <{2><[2>might have harley davidson written on it or a little cross or <{3><[3>something or like they do sometimes on their knuckles just ANYthing just fix on something <{4><[4>preferably something body rather than clothing <,> tut cos they can change their clothes and and also identify er cos sharon had an experience in wellington identify more than HAIR tut she had a situation where some guys pinched some at lambton quay they pinched some a roll of um instant kiwi tickets and she saw them later in the day and they'd both these guys had shaven themselves <,,> so identify something more than hair you know it might be their ears could be anything their eyes face as i say a mark of some sort <,> tut right and identify <&>4:00 something of the body rather than the hair <,> okay <,,> um in this situation tracey's lucky too she knows the police one of the police that's involved or will probably get involved so that's been really helpful so <.>she she's gone through that pretty well so it's <,> any questions anyone wants to ask in regard to like <,> <[1>kind of jeans <[2>coughs <[3>mm <[4>right mm like i can just see you'd be doubtful that it that it was on purpose you know whether if it was done so quick and so slyly you just might've you'd just think that <{1><[1>he'd <{2><[2>forgotten <[1>but don't <[2>yeah <{><[>laughs yeah <[>yeah well that's what when i first <{1><[1>saw him i sort of think oh the poor guy's forgotten to do his zip up after he's <{2><[2>been to the toilet sort of thing and then when <{3><[3>i turned around again and it was <[1>cos it's word yeah <[2>laughs <,> laughs <[3>mm yeah <{><[>okay <[>hanging out but i really did just think oh felt sorry for him oh he's left his zip undone <{><[>you know how some people do <[>perhaps that's right but if you stop and think about it you said he had no gruts on no well that was the second okay <{1><[1><.>so now if <,,> if you're going <.>to <.>won if you think about that for a moment yeah okay <{2><[2>if it sounds all right er melissa's saying but if you think about it <&>5:00 very quickly inhales for a moment hey he would've had white blue green black or <.>show gruts showing wouldn't he <{3><[3>he wouldn't've had <,> okay so <[1>did you look <[2>yeah word <&>sighs <[3>laughs laughs <.>you you just got to quickly <.>s don't give them sympathy that's really the thing mm he's got a problem but you don't give it DON'T give him the <{><[>benefit of the doubt think bugger hell yeah that's what i DID see or that's what DID happen <,,><&>3 all right um okay the major thing is father's day we should be getting today all our flags and so on for father's day and that's the reason that hasn't got changed yet <.>and where the hell have i got mine <,> where is it <[>coughs what is it oh i've got to find it it's just over there <,> okay <,> the theme of father's day is going to be <,> that we're giving away um golden kiwis er instant kiwis at least and there's a dollar one for up to twenty five dollars and a two dollar one for <&>6:00 anything OVER twenty five dollars and the big thing is to make sure it says sorry kids children under sixteen are not allowed by law to buy instant kiwi tickets now they're <{><[><.>actually because they're getting goods they're actually buying a ticket all right you can't do it <,> so you've got to be very careful in that regard <[>oh is <{><[>it only is it only on certain books <[>so only right yep um the tickets are only available for the advertised books and we <.>should that'll go under the photo next week but we've got a list here <.>t of the advertised titles and they will end up um <,> being put into the front now <,> be very careful <,> if they buy a book <,> i'll read it out to you we will give away a dollar kiwi ticket to all customers who spend up to twenty five dollars on EACH ADVERTISED ITEM and two <&>7:00 dollars ticket for all those who spend twenty five dollars or MORE on EACH ADVERTISED ITEM that's not in total for example if the customer buys a collins eighty one diary and a copy of scorpio illusions they will be given a kiwi ticket a one dollar ticket for the diary cos it's under twenty dollars and they'll be given a TWO dollar ticket for scorpio illusion because it's OVER twenty five dollars <{><[>okay <[>okay all right that's EACH advertised item so if they buy ten diaries they get ten one dollar tickets mm oh wow mm all right okay so it's <{><[>each item is singular they're not added together <[>each <.>AD <,> no each ADvertised is the operative word advertised not each item each ADvertised item so we're going to have to know VERY CAREFULLY which are the advertised items the other thing which will be coming in today is a kit coughs they're sending us up a um a sheet which is a list of <&>8:00 the the product that will be part of the <,> situation <,> and as we sell a book we mark off that we've given away a ticket <,> okay mhm when you get it the sheet will look like so and they'll have ALL the titles if there's anything they haven't put on there's a <.>s separate sheet um <,> with there shouldn't be anything of any problem are there quite a few items that are <.>a advertised yeah there's quite a lot quite <{><[>quite a lot there's a whole page of them <[>mm so you just put a line do you beside just put a little one one or a stroke yeah and we do that EVERY day do a different one every day that's how you read it wasn't it pip new sheet every day now clears throat these tickets we're not a normal golden kiwi outlet sue'll understand these these tickets have been activated <,> which means we've got four hundred tickets that's a LOT of tickets of one dollar and four hundred tickets of two dollar <&>9:00 that's a LOT of tickets so they are activated so if anyone pinched the roll they can go and claim the money <,> unless we're quick enough to get through to wellington to er have them what you call deactivated okay so what we will do we will only put out a few at a time the rest will be in the safe here and when i mean a few at a time i only mean about ten at a time so it's on YOU when you sell the <.>la if the book you sell is the last ticket to come and see either um myself or tracey we'll say we'll leave it at just us two cos tracey's doing this saturday and i'll be doing the following saturday so either of us two and if i'm away it'll be melissa or tracey okay so either of us two to come and get the tickets and we'll only give out a very small number tut and we'll keep them in that locked drawer will we <,> where the stamps are <{1><[1>the plus ten you know the ten <{2><[2>tickets <[1>no i think they should stay over here <[2>no because oh the <{><[>ten tickets yes yes in that locked drawer <&>10:00 <[>the ten tickets keep them in that locked drawer with the stamps i think ten'll be enough if it's not enough and we're getting through them too quickly then we'll push it up to twenty but be VERY very careful give them out in numerical order <,> tut cos they're all numbered <,> that's about all you need to say on the tickets isn't it sue that would be what you'd <{><[>say on them <[>i would say so <{><[>mhm <[>yeah <,> um i'm not sure which way the where the number's top or bottom but we'll get sue to show us that when they <.>c or simon later to show us that when they come today the big thing is they are activated they've been activated in wellington so they're in the system and they that in other words they've <.>been in their eyes they've been sold so they are now claimable for prizes all right <,> <{1><[1>now they don't come back to us to <{2><[2>claim their prize they can go off down to lotto down the road there or or go to wellington wherever they like they don't come back to us we're only <.>sell only giving them away <,> the big thing is to make sure you mark off your book or your article as well if you <&>11:00 when you give out the ticket okay um that's a two way check of course cos any unsold tickets tut by um <,> monday week we've got to send back to wellington and then um <[1>mm <[2>coughs so if they scratched it right then and there in the shop yeah and it comes up that they've won two dollars we just send them down to <{><[>lotto right we don't give out a voucher <[>yes it's just down the road i think yeah <{><[>although <[>no cos they THEY know where they've been sold lotto know where they've been sold <{><[>from <[>oh i was gonna say that's a bit silly if they've they've scratched it <,> we take it back what's that no just <{><[>they just pop down to lotto <[>it's just if they do it here yeah and then but like i mean word <{><[>take our money they they're just interested to see if they've won anything <[>we're not an outlet they're only <{><[>interested to see if they've won anything <[>yeah i see word yeah mm i mean it's no different if you get given one from somebody who sent it from invercargill you're <.>not mm you're not gonna worry about sort of going all the way back to invercargill to oh <{><[>laughs <[>get your money you'll get it from the first place you can <&>11:53
