<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>2:20 oh hi how are you i'm fine thanks <{><[>how are YOU <[>that's good oh not too bad that's nice good and iman? now he's a couple of oh about you can't <{><[>sit there <[>three or <.>f four you can't <{><[>sit there <[>oh laughs <{1><[1>laughs inhales um about oh three or four days ago <{2><[2>he had this really rough <.>ra patch on his back and i thought oh maybe it's a flea you know <{3><[3>irritation so i gave it a good brush round and watched it and didn't put flea powder on cos i thought it might irritate it now that's okay and then today i noticed i was just having a bit of a cuddle when i came home <[1>laughs sorry go on <[2>yeah <[3>yeah yeah mm <&>next utterance addressed to cat come on word and he's got a little <.>ra raw patch on his tail mhm so i thought mm has he been licking a lot <&>3:00 um i don't know well he WAS today if you look at i noticed the COLOUR then i looked at him and thought my gosh <,> okay and the bald patch here it's like scabby just there yep and i thought well that's <{><[>funny so i've really teased it out with a <.>c brush <,> <[>yeah how long you noticed it for um oh less <{><[>than a week <[>yep so that's the bit that you first saw yes <{1><[1>why did you go like that when he <{2><[2>did that oh i <{3><[3>see but he always does that when i flea him <{4><[4>anyway <[1>pretty itchy <[2>he was so itchy <[3>mm <[4>yep because he's <.>a he's got quite a sensitivity sensitive back see the <{><[>scabs there they're all the way down <[>oh right oh it's gone <{><[>all the way down <[>mm see it's all down there and all that is is just where he's decided <{1><[1>to nip there cos it seems to be it's close enough to the area that <{2><[2>the fleas are in <[1>to nip there <[2>well he was lying in the sun today just licking it <{><[>so i thought oh <[>mm well <,> has he had much in the way of fleas well he hasn't been to bad i <{><[>flea him i've got that stuff <&>pronounced chuff that stuff you <.>do oh dear <[>mm mm there's a flea there mm <{><[><.>that <&>4:00 <[>and <.>it it's just started as the warmer weather's come on too you <{><[>see <[>well i've used that stuff i bought from you that it's meant to last for about six weeks what's that it's in a powder and i rub it round the his spine yeah it definitely well <{><[>yes i'd say that people <.>who <[>and <.>he and it WORKED word a wee while <{1><[1>ago and then mostly he was good he word <{2><[2>um a little bit <[1>mm <[2>mm but of course you know what happens between twenty ninth of august and october it's hell of a lot <{><[>of fleas yes <[>warmer warmer <,> you're not infested but you're just starting to get problems and it just seems to be around his lower back <{><[>here <[>and that is fleas that's <{><[>caused that <[>yep that's flea dirt yeah that's <{><[>flea droppings <[>yeah but that's could that cause <{><[>that irritation <[>yep that's a <.>s <.>hy that's a hypersensitivity <&>next utterance addressed to cat oh you poor little baby yeah and that <{><[>that <.>means it's always more prevalent in the hotter weather <[>oh yeah and it's a quite a common thing with some cats now let's just pop him over here for a minute how's he been on his leg all right yeah he still limps a bit he's <{><[>um <[>bit much? um yes it's he's you know actually someone came in and they said oh your cat's got a sore leg i said no no but it doesn't seem to hold him back he jumps up on the table when you don't want him and that sort of thing <&>5:00 um it's it's the left one isn't it yeah <,> we thought there might've been a bit of reaction around there but he no he seems to be all right <,,><&>3 actually the time <{1><[1>i tore a ligament off my ankle word sort of for the last few months i've <{2><[2>been word word <{3><[3>laughs <[1>seems to word <[2>hobbling along <[3>would you say gradually he's been better though i think <{1><[1>so yes he just and when he gets up <{2><[2>he <[1>mm <[2>he does that limping when he first gets <{><[>up <[>yeah well he's walking funny now and he you know yeah it's still not bad though no it's not bad and he i mean there's not much more we've really gonna no <{><[>there wouldn't be <.>any and he's just just sometimes you see him there's a bit in the garden where he likes to have a pooh and he just hesitates before he jumps up but he gets there <[>keep doing anyway yeah yeah so he's not <{1><[1>he's not crying out in <{2><[2>discomfort <[1>coughs <[2>no and he <.>he you got to remember too he's a year older which makes quite a difference when he's seven that's right and also <{1><[1>he's no light weight <,> yes he's been little bit thicker where where he's had the surgery there <{2><[2>but no i'm pretty happy with that <[1>mm <[2>yeah yeah <{1><[1>i think it's compared to what it was i <{2><[2>mean <[1>and we could've could've do him <[2>mm see the kneecap's a little bit loose there yeah but it's not bad it's pretty stable <&>6:00 no well he's obviously not got <{><[>any discomfort <[>mm i mean the worst scenario if he's a dog or a human yeah we might run into problems with arthritis in his <{1><[1>leg probably when he's older but in his case it might only be a very minor <{2><[2>sort of problem <[1>mm <[2>and by the time he gets a bit older he'll be more inside and couldn't <{><[>take word <[>yeah and we can always give him some anti inflammatories if he needs <{><[>them so but i'll preserve those till he's older <[>yeah mm no <{><[>he's obviously not gonna be word there <[>now okay now what i think we really cos we've seen this and i've seen the fleas <.>we i think we <{1><[1>really have to do a <.>couple well first of all we got to treat this with some anti inflammatories <{2><[2>word all right? <[1>mm <[2>inflammatories oh right anti inflammatories cos otherwise this is just gonna get worse yeah oh right that's real itchy yeah now BUT the other thing is because it probably is well it is it's almost entirely due to flea dermatitis um <,> tut if we could try and nuke these fleas yeah then we're probably a lot better what i'd really recommend see you've only got one animal in the house right mhm yes laughs <{><[>laughs <[>no i mean there isn't neighbourhood cats that come in and stroll in your <{><[>place <[>no no um there's a very large german shepherd next door who controls that <{><[>mm <&>7:00 <[>oh yeah okay well i mean what i'd really recommend for you which'll probably be the best thing would be something like progran have you heard of that stuff <,> not really vaguely vaguely you might see it on <{><[>word yeah <[>we've got about yeah yes that stuff is really good for long haired cats cos half the problem with long haired cats is you can't really get enough penetration yeah yeah with whatever you use so you're using a powder right yes yes well the thing about powder is it's dry so it does get shaken <{><[>off <[>mm mm mm um the way progran works is that it's very slow it'll take a few <{><[>months <.>t <[>cos that's um oral oral yep once a month yeah with no toxicity no effect <{><[>on the cat that's the thing <[>oh right yeah well energy's word and it doesn't kill the fleas but what it works by is it sterilises them oh <{><[>mm <[>which is high tech oh yeah right they said they're thinking about doing that to the possums i <{><[>think <[>i thought you were going to say that to people <{><[>who <[>laughs laughs yes they looked at that well the possums they're trying to <.>vacc trying to form a um they make the <{><[>word yeah <[>an oral vaccine yeah but this works this is yeah this is a chemical mhm it's not an insecticide it's just smart genetic engineering right and they found this chemical when you give it to your cat once a month in the food <&>8:00 what it does it gets absorbed <,> um into the body <{1><[1>and every flea that bites into needs to bite them to <.>get suck the blood <{2><[2>to breed <,> every <.>cat every flea that bites him gets a dose of this and every <,> flea that they lay gets a dose of this and it stops the flea from hatching so that <{3><[3>you've got <.>the <[1>mm <[2>mm <[3>so does it work on both does it make oh female fleas stops them from <{1><[1>hatching as well oh neat <,> oh useful <{2><[2>laughs <[1>yeah yeah yeah <[2>yeah so that's the whole idea of it just cuts <{1><[1>the whole life cycle down <{2><[2>but you can't do it too late in the season cos you know you've got all these fleas starting to hatch out now it's <{3><[3>only the it's only for the future <[1>mm <[2>right <[3>oh right so the adult fleas that he's got around now it won't kill you <{1><[1>got to actually keep doing your flea treatment <[1>right right but the beauty of it is once you've been on it for about three or four months no but i mean it's just beginning now the <{><[>fleas and <[>it's just beginning yeah once you've been on it for three or four months this is all you need don't have to powder him don't have to do anything <{><[>else but <[>oh sounds pretty good <{><[>yeah <[>it's and it's <.>it for one cat it's quite economical it's about twenty nine dollars for six months right um the only thing is what is his weight inhales oh <{><[>i'm not quite sure way too much i think <[>because yeah because it's <{1><[1>one word four point five kilos and as long <{2><[2>as it's word <[1>yeah <[2>i mean you weighed him last he was <&>9:00 <&>move to other side of the room i'll weigh him <{1><[1>again actually just pop <{2><[2>him over the word here <,,> um <,> he's too word so i'll word <[1>mm <[2>here oh my <{><[>god laughs <[>he's huge no wonder he's got a sore leg laughs well i word feed him stuff cos he's um i'm aware of how heavy he is <,> <{><[>yeah and i want him round <[>well that makes it <.>a that makes it double the cost laughs cos you got to give him <{><[>two word a month <[>word starve him for a month <{><[>laughs <[>yeah no give him two <.>it that's why it wouldn't work one you see he's actually been really hungry the last two or three weeks has he voc word maybe he's had worms but i had him wormed <{><[>but he's been REALLY you know voc absolutely CRYING for food <[>mm and is is he are you giving it to him yeah well sometimes laughs mm cos <{><[>and you're worming he's been wormed hasn't he <[>mostly yeah yeah he was wormed when he had his flea word flu injections not too bad which was <,> i don't know once a year <&>10:00 um <,,> <{><[>yeah that's well <.>that hang on that's a while back though isn't it <,,> you should worm them more than once a year <[>i think that might be the case oh right um <,,><&>8 er january ninth was when he was wormed then so that's <{><[>the last time <[>yeah yeah we wormed him <{><[>then <[>that's january oh that's <{><[>a <.>yea <[><.>y yeah that's january this year so that's ten <{><[>months ago <[>months ago right oh so he needs <{><[>voc tut okay <[>so yeah um what's he does he take the pills all right can i pop <{><[>them down his throat <[>yeah absolutely okay <&>10:37
