<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>0:06 <&>CG opens door you're a bit <{><[>late <[>hi sorry? you're a bit late oh was it twelve yeah oh no laughs <,,> this man oh your <{><[>place i'll be with you in a moment <[>okay then <&>0:25 <&>tape cuts out as waiting time was not recorded on oh that's right you can just put it there <,,><&>4 laughs don't worry too <{1><[1>much about it there's not a lot you can say <,> it's an awkward thing because <,> you can get <&>sound of nylon cape being put on lots of ordinary conversations and things like that <{2><[2>cos you can you know ask friends to to tape their chats at home but <,> things like this are very difficult to get because you know they're usually people that you don't know <[1>laughs word <[2>yeah right and er you know somebody's going into a dairy and saying well i want a pack of cigarettes for which you get about thirty seconds of <{1><[1>speech before they go <&>1:00 again <,,><&>6 tut i'm sorry about messing up the appointment <{2><[2>um <[1>laughs <[2>oh that's okay i knew you said one was quarter past and one was on the hour and i couldn't remember which was which <{><[>and i came by at about quarter to twelve this morning and i saw about three people in here so i thought no it must be quarter past <[>yeah laughs but they <.>were they were in just for <.>t shampoos were they yeah yeah sometimes you know you set one lady up put her under the dryer and then you can get to doing someone else while she's under the dryer <{><[>sort of thing <,,><&>3 i typically do you know about three people at a time you know <[>right right will this be easier with my glasses off <{><[>i forgot to take them off and <[>yeah it might be actually cos i might i might i might splash them yeah oh they're filthy anyway but i <{><[>i just forgot to take them off <&>1:47 <&>2:00 <&>silence as SH washes CG's hair <&>2:12 <[>laughs oh it's no it's neat that you've got so many people coming in like this er <.>i i'm always amazed that you can have say have three people on the go <{><[>and remember who's at what stage <[>laughs laughs yeah it's quite <.>hard sometimes it's quite hard rushing round here there and everywhere yeah it makes the day go faster if you're a bit busier anyway laughs <,,><&>4 i'm always amazed at how how well people remember too um it's pam isn't it who mhm who works here um and i i just see her once every two or three months and and yet she knows i'm at university and what i'm studying and that kind of thing so yeah <{><[>yeah she's <.>pretty <[>and she's very good at making conversation yeah she's pretty good pam well actually she her her mother died this week that's why she's not in oh right <&>3:00 yeah <,,><&>6 i usually work for her off and on if you know she wants to take a day off here and there it's sort of a break from um um three young children at home <{><[>so i'm you know usually at home most days <,,><&>11 we've known each other for a long time cos we used to work over in wainui together when she owned a salon over there <[>oh yeah uh huh so <,> but <&>3:40 <&>silence as SH continues washing CG's hair <&>4:37 right okay that's great word i'll take my glasses oh yeah <,,><&>8 <&>sound of CG sitting down you can have it fairly <{><[>short if you only get your hair cut every two to three months <[>yeah yeah oh it ends up as a shaggy mane by the time that <.>i i sort of get round to getting an appointment laughs you've got quite a bit of it here haven't you <&>5:00 yeah <,,><&>12 and you more or less want the same kind of haircut that pam <{><[>gave you or <[>um yeah i think so but <.>i each time i come in i find that it's it's so unmanageable that i want it shorter than the last <{1><[1>time but um there's only so far i can go and i'm trying to work out with the the clipper thing um <{2><[2><.>i <[1>laughs <[2>have you had it clippered yeah <{><[>around the back <.>and and the back and sides yeah <,> is <.>th is there a fitting number one or is that just without a fitting <[>right on the back and sides yeah um <{><[>no i've got a number one <[>cos voc right i might <{><[>try that cos i was thinking <[>you usually have a number two do you yeah i was i started off on number four and found it was <{><[>too long so i've gone down to a number two but i think the clipper without anything was just sort of takes all the hair off really doesn't it <[>laughs yeah okay i'll try number one then i think number one's voc pretty short but with your <&>6:00 thick hair it'll probably look quite good yeah <,> yeah that's what i find if <.>you if you don't have it cut very short like that with hair so thick it it looks like it still hasn't really been <{><[>cut <[>laughs <,,><&>4 looks like it's grown a lot laughs <,,><&>11 mm and it's very awkward cos it's very heavy and um <,> <.>wh while it's very short i can just let it sort of um stick up and a bit of mousse will hold it in place but after a while it just gets so heavy that even mousse won't keep it or at <{><[>least in the time that i wait for it to dry it changes its shape and does something odd <[>mm <.>well yeah you got pretty heavy hair <{><[>eh <,,><&>6 that's the number one that's how short it cuts <[>yeah okay <&>7:00 <,,><&>18 <&>turns on clippers number ones must be popular i had someone else come in yesterday and wanted a number one mhm it's kind of practical i suppose yeah and they have the longer bit on top must be the fashion oh yeah my brother does that but i don't like it if you know if you can if there's a sharp division between the the shade or the shape of the the bit that that's um cut with the clipper and then it's <{><[>long hairs that just stop which is how my brother's got it it always looks funny to me reminiscent of a bowl cut <[>yeah laughs <&>7:50 <&>silence as SH continues clipping CG's hair <&>8:28 be nice and cool for summer anyway won't it yeah <,> <{><[>in the <[>if summer starts laughs in the past i found i i let it go over summer because i'm not um out at university and i don't really need to look very er kempt <{1><[1>so by the time i i get to march and and have to go back i've got sort of several inches to come off <{2><[2>and <,> in fact last summer pam had to attack it about two or three times to in order to get it short enough <{3><[3>so the clipper would take it without getting mangled <[1>laughs <[2>laughs <[3>laughs <&>9:00 <,,><&>20 what sort of things are you studying at university oh i've just just er finished my b a actually i'm studying <{><[>linguistics which is what all this recording gear and everything's for <[>mhm mhm um and i did a whole lot of languages as well french <{><[>and german er that's all gone now doing er <[>mhm oh <{><[>word <[>hoping to go back next year and do honours in linguistics mm but er <,> it's still i'm not quite sure of you know <.>w exactly what i want to study er <{><[>it's a bit awkward and i'm leaving it a bit late <[>yeah laughs <,,><&>3 it is a hard decision though isn't it yeah <&>door opens as customer enters excuse me <&>turns off clippers sure <&>10:00 <&>S talks to customer who learns that this is not the salon where she made her appointment their conversation is not transcribed <&>10:45 you're not having too much luck with appointments today no i'm really busy actually today <,> word laughs <&>10:55 <&>silence as SH resumes clipping of CG's hair <&>11:25 <&>turns clippers off <&>11:30 so you don't want voc like too much of a <.>di division sort of thing yeah if you can blend it <{><[>in that's cool yeah <[>i possibly can because it's just so short there it's impossible for me with my fingers to get it uh huh um just about even you know if you know what i <{><[>mean <[>yeah <,,><&>4 <.>i i'm not too worried i can't see it anyway <{><[>so <[>laughs i'll do the best i can <{><[>anyway <[>thanks <&>12:00 <&>silence as SH begins trimming with scissors <&>14:45 have you taped many people <,> laughs er no not this sort of thing <{><[>um <[>oh yeah laughs i'm working with a whole lot of other people so you get lots and lots of conversations voc um as i say this sort of thing's very hard to get you voc you <{><[>have to wait until you've got an appointment of your own or <[>mm right or you have to wander round the <&>15:00 streets <{><[>asking people <,> i went to the um wellington library yesterday actually and er asked <.>a asked around to see if people be prepared to be taped but not many people are <[>laughs mm yeah and um <{><[>the the <.>management <[>so long as you know you're being taped it voc it's sort of quite hard to make <{><[>conversation i think laughs <,,><&>4 <[>yeah yeah it can be but um yeah <.>th there's a lot of problems because sometimes people <,> um will say things that they don't want to be recorded for all eternity <{><[>but would be happy to be known for the time or or to whoever it is that they're talking to <[>laughs right so you got to be a bit careful about that sort of thing <,,><&>5 oh i'm glad that storm's over with anyway yeah oh <.>i i went into wellington on the the day after when it <.>w mhm was fixed up and during the night and the you know the <&>16:00 stormwater drains had blown and um and some places which have got um like cobblestone and brick paving and that sort of thing and they'd <{><[>literally blown holes in it with the and it was er it was floating in this cesspool of mud <[>yeah oh really right and er i'm glad it didn't you know i've got cobblestones at my place <{><[>laughs but we're quite sheltered up where we are but it's we still got the wind really hard out <,,><&>7 <&>next utterance addressed to another hairdresser top two alice have it a bit longer on the front or do you like to <[>yeah er <{><[>no i keep keep it all short i find if it's long it just hangs if it's short i can at least um brush it up and with a bit of mousse it will stay there so <[>keep it quite short okay right this is the easiest solution to the <{><[>problem cos it won't do anything else but um the only way to get it to do do anything is to put some hair glue in it <[>laughs laughs <,> you're lucky you got so much of it though yeah mm i know <{1><[1>a lot of people that <.>c complain they can't do anything with their hair because there isn't enough of it <{2><[2>for it to stay there <[1>full head of hair <&>17:00 <[2>yeah too fine yep <,,><&>5 put it this way you won't go bald in a hurry <{><[>will you laughs <[>well i hope not laughs <,,><&>4 no i <.>don't <.>think i've got actually there's not actually a history of balding in my family so i should be oh yeah okay <{><[>there <[>you'll be right then laughs <,,> yeah cos um you can have a good head of hair but if if there's someone in your family that you take after <,> all of a sudden it <{><[>seems to start falling out and that's it <[>yeah yeah <.>sho must be a <{><[>shock <&>pronounced stock after having so much hair to <[>laughs yeah <{><[>it's <.>like <[>start losing it all my cousin had lovely blonde curly hair eh and um our grandfather he went bald <.>at at the age of twenty <{1><[1>and of course my cousin took after him and lost all his beautiful blonde curly hair laughs <{2><[2>he's quite bald felt so sorry for him <[1>yeah <[2>yeah yeah <{><[>and it's just <[>suppose you just have to accept it don't you <{><[>that's the way it is <[>it's strange for it to happen so young like that though isn't <{><[>it voc <&>18:00 <[>yeah it is <,> it's a shame actually being so young and mm losing your hair <&>18:08 <&>silence as SH continues cutting CG's hair <&>19:50 see that without your glasses? tut um <.>ki <{><[>kind of i'll try <[>put them on and see if it's enough off there <,,> is that short enough or do you want a bit more off than that <&>20:00 um <,,><&>3 how much more do you think you can get away with without it sort of sticking up everywhere all the time er a little bit more er i might try that <{><[>just a <[>okay can i just do my other lady first <{><[>before <.>i <,,><&>3 won't keep you waiting for too long <[>yeah sure no that's fine it'll only take a minute to time <&>20:30
