ae word what do we do when we go to meetings yeah what do you do when you go to meetings what you've been at meetings all <&>1:00 this week haven't you oh oh well er er er i went to a funeral at er er pamapuria <,> ae right <,,><&>3 <{><[>and <[>well er <,,><&>3 i was just lucky to to get to the funeral because of two ladies from te hapua who are related to to this person that died right and er <,,><&>3 they were disgusted really because this person had died on a <.>s saturday in auckland <{><[>and <[>THAT was very inconvenient laughs and they DIDN'T nobody TOLD them <,> like yes a thing like this was happening until the paper came out on <{><[>monday <&>2:00 <[>monday which which is late for them to see yes late for them to <.>get oh ae <{><[><.>to <[>to to get down to auckland <.>n no <{><[>no no <.>i it's late for them to RECEIVE their paper <[>no? oh <,> right they didn't receive their paper until er until about four oclock monday afternoon aha and er <,> <.>ma actually it's not them that er er er got the paper it was somebody <{><[>else so this person rang THEM and to let them know <[>aha right <,> so where was the funeral in auckland no no <{><[>in pamapuria which is er er <&>rest of utterance addressed to NM how many miles south of kaitaia ngaio <[>no oh gee about three <{><[>kilometres <[>three <{><[>three <[>it's not that far anyway oh right so JUST on the south <{><[>side of kaitaia <[>yes <[>yes well when <.>we when we <.>go <,> to the cemetery well most of the people were there and then they were just waiting for the <,> for the body and <{1><[1>the relations to so that <{2><[2>er <[1>right mm <[2>right yes mm <,,><&>3 so <{><[><.>that that was <.>mon that was monday? or tuesday? <[><.>ma <.>i it was <{1><[1>tuesday and then <.>a after the funeral well we went back again to we went back to the <{2><[2>marae and um <[1>tuesday <[2>marae excuse me word they had er a a mihimihi yes and er er well had had a kai yes and came home came home yes so what time did you get home that was <{><[>yesterday you got home? <[>er er er er er er <.>n no er <{><[>tuesday <[>no tuesday <[>it was tuesday oh er er left home round <.>ab well <,> i left home REALLY to go to kaitaia with jo <,> <{><[><.>n not knowing that this had happened <[>yes right and it was only when they arrived these ladies from te hapua arrived at the shop there now they told me so i hopped on their <{1><[1>car and went <{2><[2>with it <[1>the car <[2>right yes <,> tut and so you got home <.>late OH i i got home before six just before six te karere had finished yes <,,> that's a long day <{><[>i know <[>yes <,,><&>3 even if we have any meetings over here it's still just as long as those that we go somewhere else yes <&>4:45 <&>greetings and introductions not transcribed <&>discussion about tape recording and prayer in Maori not transcribed <&>9:46 tell me about what te kao was <.>like did you all go to school here in te kao? gosh we should have got her <{><[>yes <[>and er we all er we <{><[>all called her miss ani <[>miss ani <&>muttering by all although she's supposed to be miss ROPATA but we took her <.>s first name aha all of the teachers they you know they go by their first <{><[>name <[>first name that's nice isn't it yes because there were he he he was a scotsman aha the teacher there was over here <.>not apparently their maids and whatever they were called MISS margaret or MISS <{><[>so and so <[>that's yeah yeah you look at the children today they still <{><[>call their teachers miss <[>yeah and and it's miss ani <,> so even our mother was MISS lizzie her mother was my <{><[>teacher <[>and miss betty was <{><[>hers <[>miss betty laughter <{><[>my my sister was a teacher word i didn't like her <[>and laughter did <.>she did she teach YOU yes your <.>tea your sister taught <{><[>you at school <[>yeah <{><[>that must be hard <[>oh i didn't like her i was taught by my parents and i reckoned that was difficult <{><[>my parents were school teachers and it was horrible being in the same class <[>oh yes how come that your teacher taught you er were your teachers er were your parents teachers <,,> were your <.>tea were your parents <{><[>teachers <&>12:00 <[>they were teachers both of them yes ah right they were in word was it? in kawakawa kawakawa oh yeah? for about nine years we we lived in kawakawa oh if the teachers <,> of then <,,><&>3 were teaching now <,> our children would've gone <,,> you reckon they'd be a lot better <&>all say yes so you <.>think most definitely most definitely so you reckon your teachers made you work harder than the teachers today do <&>all say oh yes <{><[>we didn't <.>even <[>they didn't make us <.>h work harder but <,> <.>w <.>w they they made us er <{1><[1>sit up respect taught <{2><[2>us respect and er discipline <[1>respect them <[2>yes that was taught see they used the rod oh laughs i bet they did <&>13:00 yeah and discipline <&>general agreement we were disciplined at VERY but then again it was harder than usual i mean it's fair when you you really get into <.>m <{><[>bad mischief <[>right right so did you get the cane when you were in standard four and were naughty laughter we we didn't know how to speak a word of english until we <{><[>went to school <[>went to school yes <,> all of you? <&>all say all of us right so you ALL speak maori as <{1><[1>your <.>first <{2><[2>language <[1>ae <[2>and we were not taught the maori language we heard it because it was the only language of course now it's just the very opposite <{1><[1>they're taught now <{2><[2>kohanga reo mm <[1>yes <[2>they're taught maori <{><[>and yes <,> do YOU teach in the kohanga reo <[>ae i was just one of the first er one to teach kohanga reo yes we all taught in the kohanga reo and i did it on a voluntary basis and not on a <{><[>pay packet <[>paid no <{><[>that's right <[>right yes so the teachers in the kohanga reo now are paid? <&>all say yes they're paid now oh well er through the system i think there <&>14:00 needed a word to do that good but er <.>w we did er <,> tut try to do it er but the money was there <.>so er they were poor we were poor when we started off yes and <{><[>they'd get paid <[>all those things hadn't started the paying off and all <{><[>that <[>right they'd get paid and they'd put it back into the kohanga reo again <.>to to get some more <{1><[1>word equipment and <{2><[2>the basic things that <{3><[3>you need <[1>yes <[2>until <[3>they <[3>and then we had all the nannies down <,,> like the <{1><[1>the they all came along and um well we appreciated it anyway i i did because <{2><[2>i was a word <[1>yes <[2>yes yes started it up right where it should be aha <{><[>yes that's <.>where <[>oh we started out there from <{1><[1>down at the centre of industry <{2><[2>and then at the marae then the apparently where the money came for was kohanga reo so er our first five thousand went to purchase a building <[1>yes <[2>it's only up there and then you turn <.>up <&>15:00 building yes it was on the marae mm <,> and how many children are there now at the kohanga reo quite a few quite <{><[>a <.>f <[>oh quite a few er but er well i think twelve to fourteen well that's good <{><[>mm <,> so MOST of the young people in the district are coming to the kohanga reo ? <[>mm the young ones yes <&>muttering good but they have <.>the they have two er um er a supervisor and um an assistant someone who word can do you know and so on but there there's an occasional pop in by mothers and the er grandmothers word that's the way it should be yes <,> that's right <,,> <&>next utterance addressed to JJ what you're SCARED of the tape recorder and all these people aren't and YOU'RE the young one joanna that's naughty laughter right yes so <.>the and the young ones you're happy <&>16:00 about the way they're learning their maori these young people who are in the kohanga reo ? nothing's good enough not <{><[>good enough? <[>as yet no oh <.>the probably the kohanga reo IS aha because there's a it's a er they do it every day of the week <{1><[1>excepting of course saturdays and <{2><[2>sundays but at SCHOOL they er <.>is the secondary does it <[1>yes <[2>right right <,> <{><[>but not the primary? <[>but <.>the but not the year from the new entrants up to the primary <{><[>that's standard four <[>so what happens when the the young ones who've been in the kohanga reo go to the primary school yes we've been battling with that for quite some <{><[>time <[>yes battling <{><[>yes that's a problem <[>now wanting someone to pick it up from there yes yes but the board of trustees er are not happy <{><[>about it <[>er some of them are not happy <,,> <{><[>about that <[>why er yes it's a good question i'll say it's complicated oh yeah mm because they er actually they thought that <.>i <&>17:00 <.>i <.>i this learning maori's supposed er starting at home even er with the <{><[>parents <,,> because <.>it they feel it um that er if they taught it them at school then what is the use of when they come back at home at night the children voc at home to at night that er they'd be spoken in english again <[>parents yes mhm so i thought well maybe there's some something there so we started er making up a school of all the young mothers good laughs <.>that's and we're starting them <{><[>up word we did we did start beautifully and it was this huria tamatea she's from home originally from te kao <[>yes we'll have to start it up again aha but she had went away and taught in round about kawerau there and cos she's come actually come <{1><[1>home to um retire so she's REALLY champion she really <{2><[2>knows what she's doing you know <[1>right <[2>good good and she's been taught um we all know we we can <&>18:00 TALK maori <{1><[1>we can SPEAK <{2><[2>maori but it's another thing of laughs trying to <{3><[3>TEACH <[1>yeah <[2>of course <[3>to teach somebody <{><[>else to indeed it is yes <[>yes yes it i've always said to her that um <,,> <{1><[1>i know fluent maori but i <{2><[2>cannot TEACH maori <[1>indeed of course <[2>well i it's something about huria word mm well she's had the training ah she had the training she had the training <{><[>she can tell us that <[>yeah oh it's so easy i'm sure it was that well i'll i'll get my b a in maori tomorrow laughter but the thing is it was the teachers that made us speak er er <,> <&>all say english english yes because er er at school whenever we speak maori well we're we are punished really? <{><[><.>how how were you punished <[>yes oh strapping <&>19:00 <&>heated discussion when i was at queen victoria that's what i used to <,> i'm punished every time they <,> word i forget and then i speak maori mhm who's been speaking maori voc no and then i had <.>to i was made to to to scrub concrete floors as much as to say it's gonna stop ME from speaking maori laughter and what did you say to yourself all the time you scrubbed the concrete floors well i said to myself should i have any children i'm not gonna make them speak maori at all tut oh in case they might get <,> what i got right <,,><&>3 it's sad isn't it <{><[>yes <[>it is really and yet you know well most of our teachers can speak maori <{><[>yes <[>yes down at the school yes mister waite can miss <{><[>ireland can <[>oh <{><[>mister <&>20:00 <[>principal of queen victoria she can speak <,> better maori than i can aha yes <,> yes well people thought they were doing the right thing didn't they <{><[>and it's we NOW know that it was SO wrong <,> to to do that <&>general agreement <[>yes and you were <.>p at school here at the local school <{1><[1>you were punished <{2><[2>for speaking maori <[1>here <[2>yes well you get the stick yes yes yes and then the er the the teachers were alive you tell them <{><[>always because of them giving us the stick for speaking maori and they don't seem to believe it <[>coughs aha they've forgotten <&>20:42 <&>at this point the woman who did not give permission for her voice to be used arrives
