<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>0:11 i remember seeing it on telly actually clears throat about all these people <,> they um <,,> tut were standing up at the back and everything cos they didn't have room for them they sit right down the sides is that like at your one as well <,,> yeah because the one in the music department's really small the ROOM tut it's about it'd be about the size of this <,> kitchen for forty people? mm with desks they've got a desk i mean <.>without obviously without the um where it's enclosed there mm so it's the whole thing and um yeah they've just got desks that we sit at <,,><&>5 <&>1:00 <.>th that's a small room yeah and so they're <.>not they don't have enough desks that's the problem yeah they just don't have enough desks so what we do is that sometimes we just sit down the side so <.>the the idea is to get in there as early as possible but i mean depending on <{><[>where the train comes from yeah <[>yeah where you come from yeah especially if you've got classes running after one after the other and i mean yeah clears throat oh <,> stop <,,> one class and you've got to piddle over to the next one <.>really you're bound to meet heaps of people on the way you've got to <{><[><.>push laughs <[>you're sprinting laughs pushing everyone else <{><[>out of the front of the line <[>laughs no laughs i would laughs i know <{1><[1>you'd just arrive late laughs shame no seats in the aisle or word <{2><[2>laughs <[1>laughs <[2>laughs but then we've got to catch <&>2:00 it up <{><[>mm so it's best to try and get along to <.>every that's <.>what what i think anyway i know some people manage to cope really well missing heaps but they do heaps of <.>r either reading or they've just a really good brain and they can see how it all connects but i've got to kind of do a bit more work <[>mm mm mm <&>next two utterances addressed to mother mm <,,> i'll have another one of those they're REALLY nice thank you but i thought you had to be there for a certain amount of lectures to pass anyway you can only miss a certain amount <,> so if <{><[>you're not attending any of those <.>lectures have you got lectures for that same course other days <[>mm yep that you can go to so it's only just one of the lectures in the music that you miss a week mm <,> mm <{><[>yeah <[>word but <.>of out of all the weeks <.>that of the year you're missing a lot yeah this is only half year course but yeah it's for the whole course yeah i suppose so <&>3:00 it IS a lot but you <.>see i mean i'm going to be <.>doing getting exactly the same <.>inform info mm because <.>is it's gonna be recorded yeah i know that but they might say you weren't <.>at didn't attend and they <.>may mm <.>well <.>mark do they mark it off like that <.>well if you're not there they don't have an attendance <.>re roster <.>at in lectures they do in tutorials well no sometimes they don't even in tutorials music department they don't anyway um others they do i think they just <.>note note it because <.>the because of the slightly smaller classes they tend to get <.>i to know everybody heaps better yeah so they know you by name face etcetera damon in your <.>class any of your classes any more mm no he was just in that class it's his last year this year <,,> what was he doing was he doing law law yeah <,,> is this is fifth year <,,> i don't know how many years he's been doing it <&>4:00 but <.>th i know it's his last year this year must be his fifth year cos he was in my history class <,> in my first year <,,> mm <,,><&>3 clears throat <,,><&>3 a long time <,,><&>3 yeah you've been there four haven't you mm <,,><&>3 so he would have just started a year before you how old are you same age as me how old is he is he <.>old he'd <.>be i <.>don't <.>he he's YOUNGER than us is he i'm sure of it clears throat he doesn't actually look that old <,,><&>3 you'd be twenty <.>three <{><[><.>tw twenty two <[>two <,,><&>4 i don't know if he's older than us or not <,,><&>5 <{><[>no idea <[>i'm not sure mm he would have to be a year older to be at <&>5:00 varsity though wouldn't he at least to get that extra year <.>behind behind well no i <.>think i think professionals are in their sixth year or something <.>i i don't know whether <.>that's you have to do that or not no but i mean you'd <.>ha you'd have <.>to he would have had to go <.>to through seventh form <.>bef to get to varsity <{1><[1>to start with so he would have to be older than us <{2><[2><.>to to get that extra year wouldn't he <[1>yeah <[2>mm cos i did seventh <,,><&>3 no but what i'm saying is um you've done four years this is my fifth and it'll be his fifth as well i think oh i see what you mean you did do five mm i thought you'd only done four this is your fourth no this is my fifth it's kirsty's fourth would you believe it <,,> i thought your degree WAS four years that's what it was no well <,> what i was doing last year was <,> <{><[>that was the honours <[>word yeah and um clears throat that was four years but this year's just yeah <&>6:00 finishing it off hopefully <,> <{><[>well he MUST be the same age then <[>mm mm do you see much of him no not any more clears throat i only see him when i'm working for dad and he's working for dad too but um so he's still working for you <,> dad well actually he told dad he wasn't gonna work until august which is next <.>month or september or <{><[>something um he hasn't worked for quite a while he used to <.>work <,> like this is the <.>last what two years at least anyway i think i've known him about that long <[>mm mm two years clears throat maybe a bit more <{1><[1>he was working like tut one day a week every week <{2><[2>for dad <[1>mm <[2>really? coughs clears throat tut and then when he was having holidays um he'd work all the week mm pardon me clears throat he'd work all through the week and um <,> some of those weeks he works are weeks that i work so i <.>was saw him like <&>7:00 through <{><[>the week as we were both working at the same place and that <[>mm mm holidays he <.>worked sometimes he worked two days a week but clears throat <{><[>most often it was one day a week all the time unless it was holidays <,> so he told dad he couldn't work until august or september cos he had EXAMS <[>mm mm <.>and so he hasn't worked for a few months but come august or september or whatever month it is he'll start up again mm but then by the end of this year he's going <.>up well next year he'll be working mm cos he's finished so he won't be able to work at all <,> so i've known him for a while but i don't get him to <.>see see him that often no i think <{><[>for a <.>while for a while we used to see each other quite a lot cos we'd always be working <.>but <[>no yeah not <.>n not now <{><[>clears throat <[>mm yeah it's funny how the times change eh mm from <.>just well it's simple enough i mean i haven't seen <.>people you know you think oh look if everybody's up in the same place you'd see them all the time but you don't no i suppose in the end it's even like you know like going to the same work place you know you <.>already know <.>people <&>8:00 no yeah they're there but you just don't <.>see for sure mm catching same trains as well yeah tut unless you got on to the same <.>c carriage yeah no that's true mm no especially at work i mean <,,><&>3 like <.>w when i was working at m o t clears throat like willis street when they shifted to that building we were <.>one one division um <,> though when you look at all the floors we were taking up <.>floors <,,><&>5 oh were we on the first floor we weren't on ground so we were on the first third fourth fifth sixth and seventh so we'd had six floors mm and you think of all the little offices in those floors and i mean you tended <.>to tended to know MOST people mm but you didn't see them that often i mean you wander up and down and they wander up and down <.>but <,> very rarely sort <.>of clears throat see them really mm yeah funny eh at the social get togethers <&>9:00 MM <.>which <{1><[1><.>we we started up when we were up there in our social club but <.>they <{2><[2>they word <[1>mm <[2>did you were <.>you <.>y were you part of the um were you in a team do you know why i <.>d yeah do you know why i decided to join the social club committee why because you get time off to go to the meeting laughs <{><[>laughs <[>but i thought that <.>was that was good laughs that was quite good and how often were they <,,> <{><[>once a day no laughs <[>i think it was about once a month laughs i wish laughs word no i think they were <.>about <,> once every two or three weeks or <{><[>maybe even once every four weeks i think it <.>was <[>mm oh that's not very much is it no they weren't very often and it was only for an HOUR or and hour and a half but um yeah that's interesting because we used to just go downstairs there were only about six of us i think <{1><[1>oh maybe eight <,> and um it was funny because <{2><[2>it <.>was i didn't really think it <{3><[3>would <.>be <[1>yeah <[2>sneezes <[3>for the <.>whole is this for the whole m o t there was only <{><[>word <[>oh <.>just just our office oh okay <&>10:00 yeah when we got to there yeah there were only about oh maybe eight ten i don't really know how many people there were but i <.>did just expected it to be quite informal and it wasn't <{1><[1>it was like a real MEETING you know read the <.>me minutes for <.>last last meeting and they said oh any apologies you know and they're writing it all down and i went wow laughs i just expected it to be quite <{2><[2>informal and not carry on like that especially being just a social club but um no they <,,> had a secretary and a treasurer and oh it was a <{3><[3>bit of a laugh but um <{4><[4>word <[1>mm <[2>yeah <[3>mm i suppose <[4>it's not as if you actually looking after MONEY that's important in some ways well the only time we looked after money was when we <.>roun ran a <.>few run a few raffles <{1><[1>and what we'd do is um the money that we got from THAT we would um use it to put on the social <,> evenings that we had tut once a month <{2><[2>on a friday night we like <.>s cos you know how most businesses on a friday night they have um <{3><[3>drinks but it would be EVERY friday <,> <{4><[4>tut we didn't do that because <.>it they used to have have that when we were in um the terrace with ALL our divisions <{5><[5>there clears throat and people when it first started used to go regularly but then after a while it just died down <{6><[6>so we decided it would probably be better if you had it <{7><[7>once a month and got EVERYONE to go <[1>oh <[2>fuck <[3>mm <&>11:00 <[4>mm <[5>mm <[6>yeah <[7>yeah yeah absolutely <&>11:12
