<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>0:26 had a good night saturday night we went to um down to downstage and it was a REAL laugh what is it what's the play it was shakespeare taming of the shrew mm oh right mm and i'm not really a shakespeare fan cause all his stuff's usually tragedies but that was funny yeah that was one of his <.>best word mm the humour i <.>saw um liz taylor and richard burton do that one really funny on film and it is very funny yes <,,> clears throat is that tandoori <.>k chicken <,> <&>1:00 i don't know just got it down the hash house down there oh <,> what sort of chicken tandoori never heard of it really nice they inject the herbs and spices and <,> curry and everything else preservative and all <.>the <{><[><.>disgusting elements <[>laughs <.>yeah into the actual chicken mhm and let it marinate <&>pronounced marinade like that rather than soak up the marinade it soaks from the inside <{><[>out kind of thing <[>clears throat mm <{><[>and then they cook it <.>up <[>and karen went to see your friend across the road here and got SLIMED by the younger one <{><[>what did he say to you <[>mm <,,> yeah i'm sorry you lost your newsletter <,,><&>3 it was <,> imported all right i can find it again <{><[>thank you <[>how do you how do you mean got slimed karen <{><[>there's <.>this <[>he said HEY dude he goes voc um that'll be one HUNdred and TEN cents <{><[>laughs <[>who's this this is that young guy across the <&>2:00 road in the <{><[>superette <[>he's SO slimy <{><[>can see that <[>oh that fellow i've never been back don't make noises in front of the microphone well we actually decided that you should bloody go back EVery day and throw your money on the <{><[>counter <[>yeah i know i should but i can't be <{><[>bothered going through that hassle <[>laughs <,,> good think that would be a great trick nice yeah does it meet with your approval holds the toilet roll doesn't it how do you stick it on it's amazing stuff we just thought it was probably time we stopped taking the toilet roll up off the <{><[>floor <[><&>quietly snickers <[>clears throat <{><[>we agree <[><.>oh oh we going to put one on yes it's a fairly radical move mm <,> we're dragging ourselves into the twentieth century just in time for the twenty first mhm mm <,,><&>5 pretty naff little bit of plastic isn't it <{><[>mm <[>clears throat <&>3:00 we didn't get our oil seed er at least our um <.>inte intensive oil job we bid on oh didn't you no did anybody get it they short listed four <,> but um no we missed that <,,><&>3 was it a longterm project or a shortterm kind of thing <,,> clears throat i thought we had a good chance but <,> they said they felt we didn't have enough knowledge in the essential oils business <,> which i suppose is fair enough yeah <,> might have found yourself in deep water oh you could always learn laughs well we <.>could yeah we could have found out yeah word found out see when <.>we we went through the process of selecting advertising agencies on three occasions we've been through that now and on two of the occasions <.>we we selected <,> the agency that <,,> that actually didn't come up <&>4:00 with the right idea but we hired them because of the way they <.>approached <{><[>approached what they did do <[>clears throat mhm and the way they thought mhm you know we looked at this <,,><&>3 exhales <.>n really nothing to do with with the creative answer that they came up with in <.>tha in that case sniffs <&>clears throat quietly you probably find someone that er whoever got it might have a little less knowledge of it than we do but sold themselves better or bullshitted more or something well i heard the other day about the sixty twenty twenty rule getting business in the right shape what about it? <.>s sixty percent the person twenty percent the company and twenty percent the product yeah sniffs whatever word i like what ron briggs said yesterday about don't mm yeah that was good wasn't it don't use the word don't <,> as in don't think of elephants laughs mm <,> right now don't think of elephants don't <,> <&>5:00 <{><[>don't put your one <.>in <[>yes i'll give you an example he said don't use the word don't i'll give you an example i said why DON'T think about elephants mhm and all these elephants rushed <{1><[1>into the room and sat on little clouds above our <{2><[2>heads <[1>laughs <[2>mm <,,><&>6 <{><[>word <[><.>h who said this ron briggs word oh yeah like when um <{><[>they <.>were <[>they were supposed to word we didn't really want them remember they were thinking about what the monster was <{><[>gonna be she was terrified he materialised the monster and so they had to keep their minds blank <[>oh laughs and he <{><[>thought <.>of <[>and this guy thought of <{1><[1>marshmallows and it turned into this <{2><[2>huMUNgous marshmallow man that came along <[1>laughs <[2>marshmallow man <[2>laughs is this ghostbusters two or <.>ghostbust um one number one the marshmallow man SPLATtered everywhere <,> you must have seen it cause it's been on t v mm about three times mm <,> all i can remember them doing on the top of the building with ray guns or something mm <&>6:00 did you watch weekend at bernie's <,> no it <{><[><.>just i'm sorry it just didn't appeal to me i'm afraid <[><.>what voc what is weekend at bernie's it's <{><[>a movie that was on on saturday night <[>a stupid movie mm oh i saw it on video <,> um a few weeks ago now and it was hiLARious it really was yes it <.>is <.>i i must admit i didn't laugh nearly as much this time <.>but laughs <{><[>i loved that film <[>it was the POSes that <.>he cos <.>he's the guy is dead you know i mean he's DEAD what <.>h who was it laughs bernie <{1><[1>this is the bit that i can't laughs voc it just sounded <{2><[2>too silly for words for me <[1>laughs <[2>laughs word how do you mean the guy's dead i <{><[>don't follow <[>well <.>he he died at the beginning of the movie but these two young chaps decided that they couldn't <,> ring the police because <.>the they'd be <.>i implicated in some way so <.>they they pretended the <.>h no well they didn't even really have to pretend it started off the guy's dead but he's sitting on the couch and they've sort of got his arms up <&>7:00 the back like this and apparently bernie was stoned or drunk most of the time anyway so nobody noticed the <.>different mhm difference and all these people that came in to the PARty thought they were having a conversation with him and there's a guy <{><[>bargaining with him to buy his car <[>laughs and bernie is DEAD and he got him from thirty thousand up to fifty thousand dollars and he's <.>de voc <{1><[1>you know i mean the guy's dead but <.>they this other guy <{2><[2>was quite convinced that he'd <{3><[3>had bargaining session conversation with him <[1>laughs <[2>clears throat <[3><&>blows nose sniffs clears throat <{><[>it was a bit bizarre <[>that's um that's interesting <{><[>cos <.>it's it's a bit like um <,> they talk about when <.>you're when you're having an interview <.>w SHUT up and listen and people will talk themselves into a hole <[>who like a word mm what's that stuff terry <{><[>oh soup <[>one of those bloody hotpots i heard that they weren't too good well we're about to find out <{><[>laughs <[>laughs vegetable and chicken yep <,> what do you buy it and just heat it in the microwave? you don't mean to tell me you haven't seen <&>8:00 the ad where <.>they all the <{1><[1>family comes in and grabs their hotpot and the <{2><[2>little boy <{3><[3>gets soup <[1>they've THRASHED it <[2><.>that's <[3>i've never seen it no that's interesting that it's got metal around the rim though yeah i didn't think you COULD put metal in the microwave <{><[>i don't <.>know <[>must have its lid on before you do that does it <{><[>word <[>yeah yeah you <{><[>do <[>take it off after just put little breather holes in on there yeah maybe it's aluminium or something <,,> silver actually <,> <{><[>laughs <[>yeah no doubt laughs mm <,> so i'm sorry we had to interrupt that conversation about melbourne <{><[>yesterday but <[>laughs mm and you walked a lot and <{><[>where else did you go did you go on any bus tours <[>walked a <.>lot clears throat no we went on er had two free rides on the trams <{><[>did i tell you about that <[>oh yeah laughs is that part of the package the <.>TRAMS NO they just don't come <{><[><.>t <[>they don't take they don't take your <{><[>money <[>no oh don't they no voc we <.>wes we come along we <.>d we had no idea where you got in and like that and so some other people got on most people got on the <&>9:00 front and a few people got in the middle so we got on the middle yeah and as we were getting on we saw it said do not enter here so laughs <{><[>too late laughs <[>too late too late then so we just stood around and noone bothered to come and <.>took take your money take our money right and the second time we were coming back from the aussie rules and of course there's <.>THOUSAN forty thousand people going to this <{><[>game <[>yep yep oh just a club game clears throat just a CLUB game <{><[>oh yeah oh yeah word <[>club game jeez and er of course all the sort of CROWD converges on about three trams and everyone PILES in just like the bloody <{><[>japanese in tokyo station <[>oh yeah hanging off the sides laughs laughs and of course there's no way a conductor could get anywhere near anyone so we had a ride <.>from oh about a three kilometre ride laughs into town laughs laughs laughs oi the trams they go for miles there don't <{><[>they <[>yeah yeah <{><[>yeah <[>MILES and miles right out in the country must be one of the few cities in the <.>world that <.>still i mean apart from san francisco that still has trams <,> coughs san francisco's called cable cars yeah well cars word they're VERY smooth too <{1><[1><,> they're good <{2><[2>ride word <&>10:00 <[1>are they <[2>oh yeah they're good they're modern trams yeah good tut um yeah i was just trying to think if i've seen rams <.>anyw <.>ra TRAMS anywhere else <,,> um they're supposed to be economical aren't they supposed <.>to mm word yeah they're <.>quite they're nice tram though they're <.>s <{1><[1>they're STREETS ahead of the trams we used to have here aren't <{2><[2>they <[1>mm <[2>mm run <{><[>quietly i think they've got rubber wheels <[>mm <,> mm mm the only time they make a noise is when <.>they go over <.>the the er a <{><[>t intersection if the tram rails are going both ways <[>word bang <{><[>a bang <[>so <.>they yeah bang bang bang bang clears throat and all the cars go bom bom bom bom <{><[>laughs <[>word across the roads did you notice the cars that were stopped when the tram stopped no no cos a lot of the stops are in the middle of the road mm so it can't pull in <{><[>at the side of course <[>oh yeah soon as the tram stops the traffic has to stop otherwise people disembarking <{><[>would get run over <[>yeah yeah as they climbed out mm <,> mm tricky <.>th the other thing i noticed is the cars <{1><[1>pull up right across the middle of the road <{2><[2>waiting to <.>turn turn right <&>11:00 <[1>word <[2>oh YEAH that <.>s <{><[>that seemed a <.>b bizarre rule isn't it <[>quite strange yeah <.>w what do they do well when you're wanting to turn right they pull over to the left in the middle of the road and wait there cross in front of the traffic that's gonna be going through so say i was going down this way and there's a t intersection <{><[>here <,> and i wanted to turn right well i go right up and wait in front of the cars here until the lights change <.>go to go that way and then they turn <[>clears throat yeah i see very <.>stra <{><[>quite weird <[>mm bit unnerving i think mm but are the <.>c are these cars here <.>c they're not coming that way <{><[>they're only <.>just word one way <[>no no they're PARKed in FRONT of the lane that's going to be going straight through <,> <{><[>oh <[>oh yeah so you're heading in the right <{><[>direction but you're sitting in the middle of the intersection <[>mm yeah yeah mm gosh i wonder how many accidents that has caused well i suppose everyone knows the rules don't think it's caused any problem but a few new zealanders probably have caused <{><[>a few accidents <[>see we i mean we've got this rule here in <&>12:00 new zealand where when you're turning left you give way mm whereas just about everywhere else in the world you don't <,,> <{><[>word <[>mind you that's a good rule i think mm <{><[>it is <[>word <[><.>turns turns traffic flow yeah person who's turning has to give way mhm i saw l a story last night at the movies and <,> this british woman was in america and she gets in her car and takes off it was a bit of a spoof really course <.>she's driving on the lefthand side of the road and the guy's screaming and yelling at her her passenger saying get on the right get on the right and <.>she turns round to him and she says i don't think they can hear you <{><[>laughs <[>laughs laughs <,> yeah <,> no it's a nice city though i like it yes it's very nice it's MUCH much nicer than sydney clears throat i've always preferred it to sydney oh sydney's a rat race <&>13:00 yeah well sydney's a completely different city isn't it mm <,> fast and modern <,> melbourne's <.>m much more old worldly mm <,,> it's quite compact too the <&>obscured by rustling noise yep <,> i just remember thousands of greek taxi drivers well there's a huge number of <{><[>greeks in <[>they <.>all they're all er from laos and vietnam and <{><[>places like that <[>are they <,> <.>from now mm yeah well this was taking over <{><[>late sixties <[>word yeah word <,,><&>3 don't turn word the only feature of the city i remember is <.>that is it must be a <.>ra it must be <{1><[1><,> high level roadways so <{2><[2>they're brick and <.>there's sort of <.>u you know <{3><[3>arches underneath them all round the place <[1>word <[2>word <[3>mm word mm word <{><[>word <[>word can't remember that word maybe they pulled them all down or something <&>13:54 <&>end of tape
