completely maori community and of course they knew <.>who everybody knew who i was as i passed and old grandmother puia came out and she had her daughter there <{><[>katy and she introduced me to katy <.>and <,> and er i was on my way to the schoolhouse <.>and and er grandmother puia said that <.>she'd she would lend me a couple of fowls <,> er so i could have some eggs and i thought this was very decent of her then one of the fowls turned out to be a rooster and the other one didn't lay eggs either and it turned out <.>that that ALL the fowls <.>the the whole twenty fowls belonged to the schoolteacher who had now gone i was just relieving and she had just helped herself taken <.>the the flock of twenty fowls and decided she'd lend me back two of them <[>laughs laughs oh they were there at the schoolhouse i was at the schoolhouse well er but the <.>fowls you were supposed to have the fowls <{><[>anyway <[>the fowls were left behind by the last teacher yeah and the cow so i'd milk <.>th i'd milk the cow and er but didn't <{><[>they offer you a wahine didn't they offer <.>you <[>so what <.>happened oh yes katy used to come visiting <.>and anyway i was the registrar of births deaths and marriages <,> er automatically and unfortunately only one person died in the <{1><[1>three three three weeks i was there and <{2><[2>i <.>got i got two and <.>six two shillings and sixpence <{3><[3><,> fee <[1>UNfortunately <[2>fortunately or unfortunately <[3>he would've got some money oh for <.>reg for registering the death er minus a penny social security charge oh so that wasn't bad that wasn't didn't cost much did it <{1><[1>the social security and <.>i i browsed through this thing and i saw that katy had given birth to a stillborn <{2><[2>child about a year earlier <[1>that's a lot of money <[2>oh that put him off i kept all my word pardon that put him off <,,> she'd <{><[>already had a <.>b a baby <&>4:00 <[>oh i think she had a word i think it was of a white father <,> father of the stillborn child somebody from the post office in ruatoria or something oh he was er well of course when they did did the voting they had the election you were there weren't you <,> or <{><[>were you up the other <.>s <.>s school then <[>er when they had the election yeah you know the new zealand er parliament <{><[>word <[>oh no i was at macintyres then in <{1><[1>from <.>wai in from wairoa ruakituri <,> <{2><[2>er <[1>oh <[2>and you taught at <.>another school on the east coast did you say inland from ruatoria in from <.>ruatori in <.>fr inland <{><[>from ruatoria was makarika and then on the seacoast from <,> ruatoria was reporoa <[>oh that was <.>maka <.>makari right makarika and then you taught down <.>at <,> reporoa right that was er that would be er both qualified teachers <{2><[2>they normally took over cos they had to do the functions of sort <{3><[3>of a a local sort of nurse the visiting nurse used to <&>5:00 come once a week and er have a look at the heads of the children and put ointment <{4><[4>on <.>their on their sores and give them <{5><[5>a teaspoon full of treacle <.>or olive oil <.>or <{6><[6><.>s castor oil or something teacher right oh they'd be up to standard six be standard <{><[>six <&>7:00 <[>and how <.>many children <{><[>oh <.>maybe maybe twenty <[>fewer than nine no laughs well it couldn't have been an aided school could it yeah native school for two <{><[>teachers <[>oh a NATIVE school yeah oh no i mean an aided school where they have fewer than nine <{><[>pupils <[>no no no no no A NATIVE school <{><[>yeah <[>oh <,> oh <{><[>i see <[>but their previous teacher had er got them in the <.>s in a sewing lesson to make these swimming togs for the older girls laughs that er that was in murray weston's school they didn't qualify did you go swimming too yeah <{1><[1>you teach them <{2><[2><,> strokes <[1>i <[2>i had some togs <,> did i teach them teach them butterfly and freestyle <.>and oh i was only there for three weeks mm they <{><[>could all swim <[>suppose <.>i suppose i did <{><[>something <[>couldn't they the maoris probably mm they can swim <{><[>look at them up in rotorua <[>word so they paid <.>your train fares to go up there <.>and yeah your taxi fares around <.>and yeah wouldn't be any taxis yeah cos he used to get a <{><[>taxi <.>in into ruatoria <[>yeah <.>i i got a taxi from ruatoria it was the only way of getting in oh getting my er luggage <{><[>in <[>so there would've only been one taxi anyway <{><[>wouldn't there <[>probably yeah mm <,> oh how funny oh i know a <.>m a maori called <.>gr er aupouri graham aupouri took my stuff from where <.>the by from the slip where the taxi had left me and he er packed the stuff on his horse <,> in to the schoolhouse <,> and er charged fifteen shillings and the secretary of the <.>educati after i'd sent the claim into hawkes bay education board <,> and the secretary willy dunn wrote me a letter saying well of course i've no idea how much money you had but it does seem to me that fifteen shillings is a bit <{><[>excessive how about offering him five shillings or something like that <[>cessive laughs laughs
