<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>0:07 i hope so laughs whoops <{><[>laughs <[>laughs you've got too many chairs in this room what one two three it's <.>like it's like being in a <.>c can of sardines <{><[>word <&>hums <[>laughs well i've been ASKED to come along and talk today with allie oh that's nice tut yes i'm actually really tired because i worked last <.>night <&>0:32 <&>tape cuts out <&>0:36 and they had a beer promotion d b's got a new beer out mhm but i'm not actually supposed to tell you what it is cos it doesn't actually come out on sale till thursday to the public mhm but we all got to try a can and so they had people and like <.>w <.>w we had to <.>st to stand behind bars tut and the first part of it they had like women <.>in in these like white jumpsuits with <&>1:00 little caps on with crew written on them and they were all like you know very <.>lovely <,> lovely women you know with lovely nails and they were very manicured tut and they took <.>aroun <.>s stood around with these trays of beer just d b draught mhm because <.>the the beer that's coming out <.>is is um tut oh i can't tell you what <{1><[1>it is but never mind <.>it's it's well i'll tell you what you what it's not a LAGER anyway but <.>they they're wanting to sort of like tut um tut put something else on the market i mean cos they've got their export <.>dr their draught and their export dry and their export and they just wanted something else to fill in the field cos people want more variety they've gathered tut no more just you know the normal stuff these days they want variety tut um tut and these women were complaining <.>blit bitterly about how heavy these trays were and we lifted one up and they're nothing in comparison to what we're used to carrying and so that went on and they had this HUGE sort of um tut wall completely covered um with black <&>2:00 curtains and stuff and they had like <.>a <.>a tut a promotion with <.>lights laser lights and everything <{2><[2>flashing it was really incredible tut and so then they just drank beer and <.>they they <.>had all of um our staff had to wear these green tee shirts with <.>the the new logo on it but there wasn't enough so i didn't get to wear one unfortunately <{3><[3>boohoo <[1>laughs <[2>mhm <[3>oh did you get to keep the um tee shirt if you got one <.>or <.>no no actually she took them back cos the last promotion they did just for export dry over the festival they all got to keep their tee shirts they were really nice light blue with d <.>b d b export dry on them inhales yep um they're really nice but they didn't let us keep these ones i don't know <.>why why not but um i ended <.>up <.>gw they bought a whole lot of glasses in because they didn't have enough beer glasses they were just drinking like nothing on earth and um tut so i had to like wash them i was out back and i was like <.>s they were <{><[>washed and i'd stack them into all these boxes it was <,> great fun but it actually <.>went <.>we we didn't finish till about one thirty <&>3:00 by the time <,> um <,> tut we'd cleaned up the ballroom cos the ballroom was immense <[>laughs no wonder you didn't get home <{><[><.>that <[>and <.>yeah and um tut so they <.>cleaned they cleaned <.>it we cleaned them up and had to vacuum it and when like every night we might have to set up for functions in other places the other banquet suites which are downstairs and like <.>y on sunday night i <.>worked oh saturday night i worked and i didn't get finished until quarter to three in the morning <,> that was really late um cause we had to like split this huge room into three cos they've got like <.>w folding walls they come out and they slide along and um we had to <.>s set all of them up tut and um word they had a <.>hu a sort of wine tasting up in this businessmen's club room <{1><[1>just for elite businessmen it's really nice and they had all this veuve clicquot and stuff and i had to go and get all these champagne glasses which they'd bought and i broke one <{2><[2>oh god um and like wash them all and like stack them into boxes so a lot of the time <&>4:00 you're actually working by yourself and a lot of the work isn't arduous but the hours are really long but <,> you know sometimes you're just standing around for about an hour just doing nothing basically or just folding napkins or chitchatting washing floors tut but there is <.>t a lot of time tut taken up with <,> um <,,> you know <.>just just being idle and then you'll have like a spurt of work and then you'll just be doing nothing but then after everyone's GONE um you could be there for about another two hours cleaning up and finishing it off so the hours are great whereas at my last job you know i was working up about three hours to get eight hours and i did what eight and a <.>qu eight and a half hours last night <,> um which is a lot <{3><[3>but you get a dinner break and everything <[1>laughs <[2>laughs <[3>mhm yeah and they have dinner cooked for you and stuff the food's not brilliant <{1><[1>everything seems to have carbohydrate in it it's like RICE <.>and and <.>m meats you know and <.>s and <.>ch cooked in <&>5:00 chilli and vegetables and cheese you know <.>everything's maybe they think you know we won't WORK hard enough unless we <{2><[2>have that um and like spaghetti bolognese and things like that tut so yeah <.>it it changes each time you go it's quite good but we got to try the beer before everybody else so that was <{3><[3>nice <[1>laughs <[2>laughs <[3>oh that's really good laughs mm that was nice and then tonight um i got asked if i could work tonight and i thought yes as long as i can get home cos as long as i'll work as long as i'm allowed to go home on the first transport <.>which we have like transports which go tut at quarter to twelve quarter to one and half past one we caught the half one yesterday they just call up taxis and they just pile a whole lot of us in a taxi who are like going kelburn karori and just drop us all off cause it's cheaper than having a bus oh that's true <{><[>yeah <[>yeah and paying us transport allowances and things like that so that's really handy so yeah i can just walk down from varsity and just go in <,> and do my bit what's on tonight TONIGHT tut is i think it's the <&>6:00 chess cos it's the premiere of the chess thing which i'm going to see on thursday and um <,> tut <.>they're i think they're having a cocktail sort of function or drinks afterwards after the show it's just <.>f i think it's just for <.>big <,> <.>th and special or v i <.>p special <{><[>v i ps <[><.>n <.>n patrons and that kind of thing and um and people in the play <{><[>in the show yeah tut i'm not sure exactly but um i don't know whether i'll be there all the time i think i might be setting up for some other function and there's another one upstairs for <,> salon <,> hair products <,> which is on that evening too so i might stay around <.>fo do the first one and then <,> tidy up and then finish <,> yeah just wait and see what happens tut should be good though this is the last place chess has come it's <.>gone did the top of the north island first then went down to dunedin and christchurch my boyfriend's brother saw it in dunedin and he said it was very good tut so i'm pleased i'm going but we had to book <,,> <&>7:00 yeah my friend sharon booked <.>f tickets um at the beginning of the year like january <[>mm mm it's amazing i wonder if there's any more bookings about i think there's still some seats but they're not brilliant you know <.>there <.>it's it's the same as the festival you've got sort of sections mm and so if you <.>want i think all of the like really good sections um have all been sold out and they cost MONEY and otherwise you end up sitting behind posts and things like that tut great <{><[>laughs <[>mm how much are tickets <{><[>word <[>well mine cost thirty eight dollars i'm not in the most brilliant place but um <,> i don't really mind that's not really worrying me mm i thought the um saturday matinee <.>was was cheaper or something yeah and the matinee is supposed to be cheaper too um tut but i didn't <.>re that was the only sort of the nights that they've um i could go so tut yeah that was when i went <,,> <&>8:00 mm um tut so i think i'll be pretty tired by the time i've finished you know just working <,> working tonight as well and then um tut <,> i've got a viola lesson tomorrow night and then <{1><[1>chess on thursday night and then on friday night i'm supposed to be going to <.>th i've <.>got i'm on the staff student committee for drama and i'm <.>sp we've got drinks tut and then um tut i'm supposed to be going to the movies with a friend <,> and then saturday night i'm going to a twenty first my <.>friend's celia's turning twenty one so i'm going to a party at her place but sunday i'm not doing anything thank goodness <{2><[2>so i can so i can work on my music two four two assignment tut to <.>write i'm writing a <,> basso continuo part for a <.>flute handel flute sonata tut actually it's the one we did in one oh seven last year <,> you <{3><[3>know that one we had to do a figure bass and it had <,> henry smalls had that one that he gave out to <{4><[4>us <[1>laughs <[2>laughs <[3>er <[4>oh yeah yeah <.>tha it's that one oh voc actually doing that one <{><[>yeah <,> the line thing <&>9:00 <[>yeah we <.>act we actually have to WRITE you know how we just had to do it freehand mhm just see it and play it we actually have to write it out and they want us to write it like um more notes on the righthand than the left mm tut and we're allowed <.>to you know we've got to like look at <.>the <,> look at the chords and analyse them and make sure we don't have you know our harmony's good we don't have any inhales fifths <.>of parallel fifths oh excuse me tut and things like that <,> mm and that's quite fun <,> <{><[>tut <[>when's that due it's due next monday laughs <{><[>laughs <[>i was supposed to be going to youth orchestra camp tut but i don't have enough time <,> and we're just <.>gon i <.>was mean i was going to have to <.>scr have to <.>s get up at six thirty <.>on <.>pi be picked up at six thirty on saturday morning just to go up for the day and it just wasn't worth it <,> tut um cos they're coming back on sunday um yeah that's the only problem now <.>with <,> as you get higher up you seem to have less and less time it's true yeah just like <{><[>college <[>um <,> yeah <{><[>it is actually it's very much like that like you can <&>10:00 always play heaps of sport when you're young but you <.>can't <,> the other <.>thing i sometimes think you know i should have done more when i was younger <,> um <,,> cos i look at my brother he's a runner and he spends just so much time running <[>oh yeah he just oh i mean he's out every night um it's about the same amount of time that i spend practising viola tut i got myself a new teacher i finally decided it was about time that i went out and got myself a teacher tut and i'm learning from victor van der meulen from the symphony orchestra tut right he lives just a couple of doors down he's married to a violinist patricia bowles yeah my sister's learning <.>also also learning a viola is she learning viola too yeah she is um <,> to a missus alexandra ripley never heard of her <.>she's she used to be um <,> um part of the n s o oh was she in the n <{><[>s o <[>n z s o yeah oh i <.>don't i haven't heard of her <&>10:54
