<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>10:53 yeah it is i mean there's a <.>l fuck frigging that politics of health and women i mean that's <.>tech a lot of technology there and <&>11:00 that fertility stuff <,> <{><[>that's really interesting did you read the broadsheet article about that woman that <,> took voc she couldn't conceive very easily and she went to fertility experts for years and years and um <,> she's a feminist and that and she was living with a man and she said she had access to it because she WAS living with a man and um <,> but she said in all that time nobody said asked her things like why do you want a child so much you know it's quite funny cos she did conceive from i v f you know she she really really wanted a child desperate and did all the things <.>and <[>mm mm <,> <{><[>mm <[>anyway she i think she failed from the i v f but she adopted a baby and then six months after having <{1><[1>adopted the baby she <{2><[2>got pregnant <[1>that's right <[2>mm that's right but she was sort of quite anti all the i v f programme and <,> all the doctors that tried to help her she was sort of quite anti them because she said that it was open to her cos she was straight but it's not open to lesbians <,> like lesbians can't get access to even artificial insemination from a doctor no it's amazing eh mm and that's a political <,> thing isn't it <&>12:00 mm do you reckon kay mm <,> yeah they go on did you see that programme on on sixty minutes those two dykes in australia who wanted to <{><[>get <,> artificially inseminated and they both wanted to i think one they both had kids already <[>oh <,> no i heard about that yeah mm they'd left their husband and one of them had been in an abusive relationship <{1><[1>apparently it <.>s you know it seemed from what the conversation was and yet this other woman kept on saying about you know NORMAL families and a man and a wife well JESUS what's normal how many bloody normal <{2><[2>families are there <[1>mm <[2>yeah <,> yeah and what's <{><[>normal about sexual abuse <[>who was saying they're normal <[>oh this other woman this other expert or someone you know <{><[><,> this woman yeah she was going on about you know it <.>w it would deprive these normal families and they should have a father figure and <[>yeah that's right oh god just ignoring totally about the abuse the other woman had suffered the sexual abuse <{><[><,> the physical abuse of women <[>mm mm <,> that's right it was really interesting cos they were just kind of off the street dykes they weren't highly political or anything mm you know and they didn't look <,> you know like your stereotypical dykes or anything <&>13:00 was this on the t v yeah <{1><[1>it <{2><[2>was good they've had some quite good things and then they had that thing on foreign correspondent i was saying about that woman who wrote that book about um <,> <{3><[3><.>beau <.>some something <{4><[4>about beauty <[1>mm <[2>mm <[3>oh beauty <[4>beauty yeah <,> yeah and how you know there's so much um <,> young women with eating disorders and stuff like that now that's like that conversation we had lou eh about <,> how we don't wear corsets and that anymore but we go to sweatshops and gymnasiums and get obsessive <.>about mm mm <.>our we try and make our bodies <.>into oh yeah <{><[>yeah <[>what in old days we could just put on a corset and stuff ourselves <{><[>laughs <[>word yeah and eat the same laughs but yeah it's like when you think oh it must have been so terrible in those days having to wear corsets and all that but <,> is it any better now mm having to go to the gym and just about kill yourself mm or even other cultures you know like you knock other culture the muslim cultures and that but at least <{1><[1>the women have their own their separate development <{2><[2>practically eh <[1>that's right <[2>yeah <,> yeah and their own women's communities practically <{><[>in their homes <[>yeah well that's like some of those religions like hare krishna <{><[>and that i mean the <&>14:00 women do their own thing and that other one that you know those women used to belong to in auckland the bakery women <[>mm <{1><[1>yeah mamata word <,> <{2><[2>mamata bakery <[1>oh yeah <[2>what was that <{><[>laughs <[>mamata religion <{><[><,,> you'd join that one <[>what was that religion laughter yeah <{><[>oh <,> hari bolan <[>ananda marga ananda <{><[>marga <[>oh <[>ananda <{><[>marga <[>laughs <{1><[1>laughs <{2><[2>laughs <[1>hari bolan <[2>you know like there's <.>lots i mean there was mostly lesbians and strong women's development in that mm <,> yeah there was i mean sod it you know it's probably better if there's separate women development <,> apartheid of the sexes <,> <{><[>we know which one will be dominating though don't we <[>laughs yeah we know which one will have all the money and all the land mm and all the resources mm know who'll be doing all the work laughter voc not me laughter mm mm it's good they're showing stuff like that on t v now well it's not coming often though kay but it's oh well it's more than there used to be do you reckon <&>15:00 i reckon it's quite good i've seen lots of things there was this this woman kran and her daughter <.>le um gay parenting oh i saw that one i didn't think it was very good though no it wasn't i mean it wasn't you know they're not <,> always crash hot but they're you know some coverage <.>the that one on sixty minutes the dykes and then <,> this woman <{><[>what was kran is she <.>yo your friend <[>mm <.>sh no she was um where shelly and julie were living <,> <{><[>she's a she's an artist in auckland <[>oh oh and they she was she came on t v as a lesbian and with her daughter as a lesbian mother she's got a teenage daughter <{><[>they just talked about stuff what it's like for the girl at school and like that eh <[>oh mm oh and what did the girl say at school does she get a hard time not <{><[>really <[>oh no she was sort of into it for a while herself into what well she was being a lesbian for a while was <{><[>she <[>well she was kind of experimenting i mean she's only young mm <{><[>she's about fourteen or something eh <[>she's lovely er she's in the seventh form now oh right <,,> mm yeah <,,> oh i think i <{><[><.>mean <[>does she go to auckland girls' grammar <.>i yeah mm see <{><[>that word <[>i mean it would be more acceptable than if you <&>16:00 went to like ingle wood high schoo l yeah i know they'd probably come down and interview sue's and carey's boys but the thing they did on the programme was they wanted to film at the school they wanted to film this the girl rehearsing for a play or something and the school wouldn't let the cameras in <{><[>why <[>mm cos her mother was a lesbian and it was <{><[>going to be on this documentary <,,> why <[>no that's not why i don't know why <,> cos they thought it would be bad for the image of the school i guess yeah <{><[>i guess that's why <[>mm oh REALLY oh i don't know they might have just thought it was going to be sensationalist sort of crap and they didn't want the school tied up in it oh mm bet charmaine poutney would have had it on yeah i bet she would've mm she wrote a really good editorial in the listener eh did i tell you about that no oh i did about how she said that um the media doesn't pay half enough attention to education to things that are happening in education and actually new zealand education's very good and gets <.>trans like they've bilingual <.>un learning development programmes going on here mm are being copied over the world <{1><[1><,> and yet you'd never know that well she said we should have bumper stickers she said like real men read and lions for learning you know that sort of thing <,> i mean <{2><[2>she had to be middle of the road she wouldn't <.>say she wouldn't say <{3><[3>laughs she wouldn't <{4><[4>say <[1>yeah <&>17:00 <[2>oh great <[3>laughs <[4>lesbians for learning yeah that's right laughter i don't reckon the education system's very good <,> why are all these wonderful women not wanting to work in it if it's that good yeah i've been thinking about what it would be like to be a secondary school teacher no but i mean it's <{><[>just positive it's just <[>yeah louisa you'd be good i wouldn't i'm an awful communicator <{><[>i'd have <.>thought <[>yeah but that doesn't matter <{><[>laughs hell there weren't many good ones at my school <[>laughs but we think that the education <{><[>system's fucked but there ARE some really good things that are going down it's like maybe it's stuff for maori people here but there's still that korero on t v or <[>at least you're nice mm te korero? i can't even remember the name of the programme mm te <.>karer</.> karere you know like voc you know showing positive aspects <.>of yeah instead of having these idiot rugby men <&>18:00 oh don't know about my next game laughter i played a really good game last time actually i get REALLY sick of the sports coverage on the telly oh <{><[>it's disgusting <,> and it's always it's if it's not league it's the other kind of rugby <[>it's endless eh <,> and it's all male oh i just <{><[>i find the worst thing <[>laughs laughter the worst thing i reckon is boxing they have boxers talking and they honestly they've obviously got brain cells <{><[>missing <[>laughs laughs laughs <{><[>they have cos they got no teeth they can't talk properly anymore <[>laughs no but and they keep promoting it and people are getting brain damaged from doing it <{><[>and yet it's so <,> i can't believe it tessie likes watching it i just CAN'T believe it it's <[>yeah she likes WATCHING it yeah maybe she likes seeing me <.>h hurt each other i <{><[>don't know <[>does tessie like watching it yeah oh she doesn't she does <,> i reckon that's so gross and even on l a law one time they had this man who'd been really brain damaged from it you know and he they <&>19:00 the lawyer was trying to get some money back for him and he wouldn't even um the guy wouldn't even admit you know about the boxing but it was his wife and family who were suffering he couldn't work anymore or anything <{1><[1>course i mean it's so stupid it's a stupid game like if you play rugby and you get knocked out <,> more than once in a season you're not allowed to play for the rest of the season whereas look at boxers i mean that's what they do don't they they <{2><[2>get they have to get knocked out every time <[1>word <[2>mm there was a <{><[>there was a <[>well they don't have to they just no they <{><[>don't always word <[>well then how do they lose their fight well they just voc the referee or whatever decides oh that somebody won they don't they don't have to fight to the bitter end <{><[>oh i thought till the other one gets knocked out <[>oh there there was another documentary on t v god i watch a lot of t v don't i sounds like it doesn't it there was another documentary about this australian boxer and he seemed quite you know he was a decent sort really and he had this bout with this american guy but this other guy had organised the fight and he organises a lot of fights and this australian guy actually won but because this other guy sort of organised it it they said that it was a draw cos that was sort of where the money was <{><[>it was a big money thing <[>oh right <&>20:00 yeah it was so bad and <{1><[1>this other he was <{2><[2>obviously <[1>mm <[2>was this in l a law no it was a <{><[>documentary <,> it was a documentary <[>oh right really oh sorry i mean the other guy was totally out of it you know he was sort of really groggy and the sort of umpire finished the game and said it was a draw <,> it was such a <{><[>load of shit <[>and did the audience go boo oh yeah the audience thought it was really shit and he you know he knew he said he was really proud of the australians cos they kind of supported him knew that he was the winner <,> but just all that even you know misuse of power within it <,> <{><[>on the day <[>oh yeah <{><[>yeah <[>politics and sport even yeah ten years since the springbok tour yeah i <{><[>know <[>mm that's right and the rugby union have decided not to play in south africa with in south africa haven't they <&>20:43
