<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>0:06 is veronica not very well at the moment oh she's fine she <{><[>just <.>said <[>oh just this morning <.>the um she said oh i want to come to work with you this <{1><[1>morning so yeah tut first time she's ever said that and i said well i'm not going to work this morning <{2><[2>and she said are you staying home by yourself then and i said yes and she said well i want to stay home but with you <[1>laughs oh <[2>laughs oh so i just took her she cried a bit this morning but it seems that <.>ev about every second day she cries does she well <.>they they all do that don't they <{><[>it's part of their act <[>oh mm yeah she wants to punish me for something laughs but anyway <.>p but i said to her you can't come to work because you've got to sit still for <,> four hours no talking and to sit quietly laughs laughs she said she could do it but i <,> disagree <{><[>laughs <[>yes i don't know <&>1:00 but i think next time the creche is closed i might bring her <{><[>up just to just for a visit so she knows <[>yeah that's a good idea mm yeah cos lawrence likes it well a lot of the other kids when they go on outings downtown go to the <.>person's <{><[>one parent's work <[>yes yeah i think it's a good idea yeah <,> yeah i don't know how she's going to be when we go on the ski trip but that's <.>not <.>th that won't <{><[>be my problem no no but i'll probably have um withdrawal symptoms because i've never been away from her for a night <[>that's not a worry eh oh really this is two nights <,> oh well you'll have phone calls yeah <{><[>but i don't want to be too sort of <,> soft about it all <[>word i know but it's hard well <.>it probably just the first time is <{><[>hard <[>i think marie was <.>about she was <.>o over two before i had a night away mm <,,> tut it was quite difficult mm because she's <.>still she's had had this bad cough and she was coughing in the night and i mean rhys got up to her and she screams and yells she won't <.>h have anything to do with him <{><[>laughs if i'm not there he'll probably take her into bed with him <&>2:00 <[>laughs yeah oh she'll love it really well she will once she gets over the fact i'm not there yes yeah she'll have him round his <.>finge round her little finger last night when we got up to the northland shops she carried on had a tantrum and <{><[>in the end he said oh shall we walk home so they got out of the car and walked home and <.>they she had the time of her life just walking from northland down to our place <[>yeah that's quite a walk isn't it didn't make her any tireder though <{><[>she was still up till ten oclock <[>laughs sounds like miss <.>s young madam so i finally because we were watching the movie alcatraz oh yeah and er aaron had taped l a law and marie was oh turn it off it's too loud i said oh put ear plugs in which she did that took care of her then she reckoned she was awake half the night but <,> i don't think she was she <.>just she just says that it was ME that was awake half the night mm as long as they're getting a good night's sleep every night every other night it doesn't matter well i've been <{><[>awake <.>by basically since four oclock <,> well she coughed for an hour till five oclock <[>mm mm <&>3:00 then she went to sleep and then she had a little sort of nightmare she said something was in the bed with her oh then it was time to get up tut so i don't know <,> perhaps she'll sleep better tonight you didn't miss much with l a law oh right <{><[>word <[>it just had little snippets and then they had the actors talking it was the hundredth episode oh <,,><&>4 silly of them to be selfconscious about it laughs laughs the ski trip <{><[>laughs <[>laughs we'll talk about that <{><[>laughs <[>well which weekend are we likely to go i think the <.>s the first one yeah the sixteenth to the eighteenth of august oh i spoke to caroline this morning told her about it yeah is she going to come well she said she'll let me know closer to time i said transport's a bit difficult so it would be better if she could bring her husband then they can bring the car yeah mm um <{><[>i <.>sa <[>i think the transport's all right though <&>4:00 yes it is yeah yeah i thought the cost might have put caroline off but no well if you're not going skiing it's forty dollars less <{><[>anyway <[>well that's right yes so a hundred dollars or so for a weekend is pretty good i still think so yeah <,> yeah because most sort of like motel accommodation these days is about sixty or seventy dollars mm we've <.>got oh rhys knows these people who've got a a lodge at lake rotoiti at <{1><[1>rainbow in the south island and they asked <,> us if we want to go in the august holidays but i think it's not fair <{2><[2>cos with a little kid in the in the winter because it's i mean she'll be cooped up inside with georgina and i so i said to him say oh we'll go in the summer <[1>mm nice <[2>it's a long way to go mm yeah mm <{><[>it's better she can go for walks and things get out <[>when we can go for picnics and and things and also these people are older and <.>the another couple are going and they don't want a little kid no <{1><[1>they don't always realise what <.>they've say do they <{2><[2>people <[1>and <.>then <[2>no but you can't even eat your tea in peace or <{><[>laughs <&>5:00 <[>laughs embarrassing and i i wouldn't be happy i'd be on er <{><[>word <[>you'd be a nervous wreck by the time you get back <{><[>mm <&>5:00 <[>mm yeah so this ski trip should be quite good yeah i'm looking forward to it <,,><&>3 because mm i heard about <.>av what to do in an avalanche on the <{><[>radio this morning <[>tut oh what do we do <.>y yell out in italian no no she probably heard it <{><[>laughs <[>laughs if they had it probably laughs well well it said the first thing that er you do the first warning you get is that the ground starts moving <{1><[1>changing and then if you've got time cos often you don't get much warning <{2><[2>you should loosen everything like all your i don't know bindings or what <{3><[3>ever they're called <[1>mm <[2>mm <[3>oh yeah yeah i know what you mean yeah and your pack and your <,> poles because when you <.>f when the snow from an avalanche is quite light so if you if you get caught in it the heavier YOU are you'll sink to the bottom oh so you should be as light as possible so if you've got time jettison as much as you can mm and THEN um tut go like swimming <{><[>with swimming yeah <[>yes <&>6:00 that's what maureen was saying this morning you go like this <{><[>because it gives you air in front of your nose sort of thing <[>and <.>that yeah that's right <{1><[1>but you've also got to keep it away from your chest as well because there's no point in having it <{2><[2>clear around your face if <{3><[3>you can't breath because it's too heavy on your chest <[1><.>like <[2>oh word <[3>but you can't move here yeah yeah that's a point and put your hand up oh yes <.>s in case it er it reaches out but maureen said she was caught in a white out once so that was what does that mean i'm not very sure <{><[>but isn't it when it's sort of you can't see anything but i don't know what causes it <[>but <.>she because she said she couldn't she didn't know if she was up or down or <,> where she was or anything and that you you can't be able to see maybe <{><[>it's just heavy snow <[>but surely if you were heading down you'd know <{><[>mm <[>oh i don't know perhaps we'd better ask her laughs well i didn't like to be ignorant <{><[>so laughs because she and deeane were talking about this thing that yeah <[>yes laughs i know i know there's a lot of subjects here <{><[>i'm quite ignorant of <[>laughs laughs <&>7:00 i just mm mm keep my mouth shut say nothing <,> well how's the time <{><[>going least we're going to ask that <[>yeah i i think we've got about five <{><[>more minutes laughs <[>oh gee laughs oh dear poor caroline has to transcribe all this coughs yes yes <,,> tut i wonder what stuart is doing oh oh he'll be asleep in bed probably i should say yeah <,,> oh wasn't it last night or whenever they were sharon was taking them out for tea for dinner they hadn't got there yesterday oh well then <{><[>it would have been yeah <[>oh well maybe <.>they yeah you hear sort of bits and pieces and other bits and pieces you let just flow well when you say like tuesday you're going out for dinner we're <{><[><.>as <[>yeah we're ahead we're ahead of them aren't we yes yeah so or are we ahead yes we are so i mean you're sort of <{><[>live <[>probably about twelve hours ahead twelve hours ahead yeah oh i lose track of where it is oh um judy enjoyed the aerobics oh did she mm she's going to <{1><[1>go again oh i said to her come thursday i felt really good <{2><[2>afterwards <&>8:00 <[1>quite good <[2>are you going thursday yes i wasn't going to <{><[>i've been looking for excuses all week <[>mm and how did your arm last <{><[>out <[>it was all right yeah i had a look at it a couple of times it looked fine oh good mm mm yeah the only thing is the making up the time that you go you know <{><[>all that sort of thing yeah actually i've enjoyed staying home in the morning <[>word bet you have the last few days it's been good mm more relaxing i think well you're fresher yeah voc well you've always got in mind you're going to work and at <{><[>half past eleven or so i usually think oh i have to get ready and have something to eat <[>mm yeah and go but i <.>u you seem to be more relaxed because you haven't got the TEA everybody's coming home sort of attitude at the other <{><[>end <[>yeah yeah <,> oh that's good and AND i get the washing dry <{><[>voc <[>oh that's a point you lucky thing yeah by the <{1><[1>time i go home and get it out <{2><[2><,> it's starting to get cold <[1>laughs <[2>well yeah well that's right well i <.>got it's out sort of <&>9:00 by about half past nine and it some of it was dry before i <{><[>left <[>gee that's good it was really windy oh because it's windy today isn't it <{><[>it's the first time it's been windy like this for ages <[>mm mm mm <,,><&>3 a few more minutes <{><[>laughs <[>laughs <&>next utterance addressed to tape recorder this is very difficult caroline laughs we were actually did better yesterday yes i think so we were more relaxed i think i wonder what it is because we were just at morning tea yeah more relaxing <,> run out of things to say <{><[>i think we might have to call it a day <,,> normally i'm tired at this time of the day <[>yeah yeah not so chatty i wish the computers were going oh i know they're a damn nuisance cos i thought oh i'll come <.>up come in at twelve it's going to be really good because everybody goes to lunch <{><[>cos there's only two or three people here no computers <[>yeah mm that guy won't answer his phone i reckon we should ring another number <&>10:00 yeah or otherwise we should ring karen or someone <{><[>to get onto him <[>yeah yeah i think we might have to <{><[>do that word <[>because <.>it actually it's been down for nearly two hours hasn't it oh yes at least that eleven it was down eleven? i think so just after eleven oh oh i thought maureen said no half past eleven <{><[>i tell a lie i think yeah yes i tell a lie yeah <,,><&>3 <[>eleven forty eight oh well that'll do <{><[>must be nearly quarter of an hour yeah <&>end of extract <&>10:18 <[>that'll do
