<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>0:06 well tell me again about these books why are they cheaper if you pay cash um it's <.>just <,> i don't <.>know i <.>don't it must be like <,> you know how <.>they isn't there a cheque clearance thing now tut only twenty five cents well um i don't know perhaps they want CASH cos cash is more easier to handle <.>so have they got a cashflow problem dear possibly who are <.>th who are these people victoria bookshops you know at the student union building <,,> yeah <{><[>word <[>and how much discount do you reckon it is on each book two three dollars or something <,> i suppose it's some set percent rate one percent or something sorry i think it's probably about one percent or something like that <,> mm <&>1:00 not much mm tut and you've checked whether sarah and lisa have got any of these books <{><[>before you <[>well <.>that that's politics and she hasn't got any politics and history is <.>sa launch out sarah did politics oh yeah but it's changed there's new books out <,,> <.>th they came out in <.>eighty <,> ninety word but um <,> tut <,,> no there's like and there's a history book and that's only come out nineteen eighty two so <.>th i can't buy that second hand anyway EIGHTY two do you mean ninety two i said ninety two i can rewind it <{1><[1>and check it okay i will later just <.>to just to annoy you um so there's that um <,> plus there are other books for english that um have you seen seven centuries of english poetry poetry <&>2:00 seven centuries of <{2><[2>poetry <[1>laughs i wouldn't be so sure <[2>mm sounds familiar have we got one mm i think we have we have good <{><[>cos that's like <,> BULK and we <.>u use it a lot <[>mm mm i think we might <{><[>have mm oh well i'll have a look is it a penguin have you got the list <[>often yes i've got the list i <.>don't i don't know what it's by i just know the title <,> and i <.>rec i'd recognise the um cover what's <.>cover colour is the cover um it's got like a picture of medieval england on it oh oh that's not what i'm thinking of voc <,,> and have you tried to get some second hand books tut um <,,> yeah oh they didn't have anything from what i was doing all the ones you mean you managed to stay in the queue for half an hour or an hour or whatever is required or you just gave up no i did i also went in there today and <.>did did <.>a <{><[>word <&>3:00 <[>but wasn't today about a week too late <,,> well yeah well not really laughs i mean <.>i i couldn't have been guaranteed that they were there anyway tut an awful lot of students do english one is there about six hundred in the class or something <,> not all of them want to keep the books i'm sure a <.>lot probably not all of them can AFFORD to keep the books well <,> tut i do more than just english one oh five mum i know have you looked in the paper cos sometimes people advertise no i haven't books you know a whole class set yeah <.>well i mean there've been some up around campus and stuff but <,,> <.>e english will probably be okay what's that mean for books what do you mean well i've got four or something already and <,,> coughs a couple of others i need <&>4:00 like once on chunuk bair <.>and have you heard of that <,,> er is it maurice shadbolt <,> could be mm i've certainly heard of chunuk bair <{><[>yes <[>yeah laughs of course what about um objection overruled no okay well that's another drama thing <,> so's once on chunuk bair tut no no i don't know so is foreskin's lament out is it no no it's <.>not word was it last year yes or in lisa's year <,> yeah no we're not doing it tut oh <{1><[1>must have filtered down towards the masses at school so it's out <{2><[2>word <[1>word <[2>laughs i suppose they just change the <{><[>syllabus <[>mm mm mm have you seen verity's flat have i been to see it no where is it plunket street oh yeah i mean no laughs what was it like <&>5:00 have <.>you no no i've just heard them talking about it sounds as though it's at least sunny which is something supposed to <.>be yeah right they're <.>d doing it up and putting new carpet in <.>and mm laughs washing machine and stuff so it must be really good and apparently they've done quite a lot of that they had to do a big cleanup over the weekend <.>and right mm a lot of the painting and the gardening and the carpeting and stuff's been done already in fact i think he said she could move in on thursday if she wanted to really mm some aspect of it wouldn't be quite finished <.>but that'd be good <.>when when rebecca's going to stay till <,> tut oh she's going down to christchurch for the wedding for is she coming back then <{><[>after that <[>yeah mm oh that's good mm that's cool voc has she got open <,> tickets coughs well they're meant to be fairly <,> FIXED because they're tut a kind of discount rate but they have apparently been quite helpful and flexible <,,> in the past so she's hoping that they'll allow her to change it once more <&>6:00 oh that's cool <,,> they <{><[>might change her transferral fare or something <[>mm sorry they might charge her transferral fee or something mm tut they didn't when she had to stay cos of her father in law <{><[>mm <[>mm that's true mm so i'm not sure <,> exactly when she's going but that's the plan she's going to come back here <,> tut and hopefully <.>s hopefully i love saying that hopefully coughs she'll be able to settle verity into the flat properly before she goes back and then they'll both feel <,> reassured <{><[>next week <[>and kirsty can't move in mm apparently not so <.>that that's weird how she can't get a loan until easter <,,> tut who said that verity did <,,> is that when they make the first <.>p payment out to students don't know mm could be because in the past <&>7:00 when they used to have <,> tut you know when students used to get forty six dollars a week even if they were living at home i think the first payment was quite late into the term tut so what are they supposed to do tut borrow live on charity live on your parents <,> whatever well couldn't she borrow off her parents until easter oh she's in a bit of a difficult situation personality with her parents <{1><[1>or her <{2><[2>parents her mother is <[1>voc <[2>mm this is probably a bit personal to be talking on this tape really mm mm tut okay tut that's a shame for her mm anyway yes yes i think it is do you like her <,> tut yes kirsty i mean i understood you to mean that why did you look at me like that <&>8:00 well i just said i thought we ought to be a little bit discreet and then you start asking me more personal kind of questions hardly um <,,><&>3 did <.>you she went to a b eh <,,> oh <,,> okay <,,><&>5 did you see any a b girls speaking of a b girls at the choir tut i think there are three or four of them in it um one that turned up in uniform oh yeah tut i think she <.>didn't she didn't know many people um <.>i she didn't seem to know many <.>probably probably ex <,> a b girl the ex ones hardly wear uniform no there are about three present word students i forget who they are really yeah one of them's called michelle michelle andrew <,> and maybe anne carde don't know <&>9:00 there was another one auditioned that didn't get in young are they young young the ones that auditioned would they be young oh sixth formers probably <,> is that young very mm mm tut me being such an OLD <,> guy and all do you think your sister's EVER going to get off that phone nope laughs is this this one call she made since dinner time well i mean <.>since well since about eight oclock no <,> <{><[>eight oclock <[>but verity went out at ten past eight and we'd finished dinner she caught the ten past eight <{><[>train <[>she wasn't on the phone then was she she was too laughs gosh must be <,> IMPORTANT honoured person mm unlike her family is that what you're trying to say mum no no tut she was quite civilised to me tonight as she usually is laughs your angel daughter <,,> <&>10:00 i sure haven't got an angelic son i thought we weren't going to get personal mum mm <&>calls to daughter lisa oh don't worry about it <,,><&>6 good try mum mm tut did i tell you that the bay golf club has offered the girls <,,> tut free coaching on sunday mornings really mm why tut i don't know they seem quite keen to foster golf for the girls for some reason but it <.>isn't it isn't in fact only our school and it isn't only girls but they've offered free coaching to anybody who's interested <,> between nine thirty and eleven on sunday mornings about twice a month but you have to be playing at the competition no no you don't have to be playing in the competition oh in OUR competition <&>11:00 so i couldn't go along <.>and oh i think it's more sort of beginners but it's a professional that's doing it oh so am i if you paid me i'd be a professional laughs tut oh i think it's a professional that works at the club word he's quite good maybe they've looked around and observed that all the members are over fifty or sixty five or something <.>and <{><[>decided they need <.>some <[>sniffs well i mean that's <.>where that's where the future of the club is yeah so the men's <{><[>clubs are getting anxious <[>plus there are <.>n <.>no no young girls play AT ALL sorry there are hardly any that play at all sniffs mm like <.>gina's tut you know that i told you that that um woman rang me and offered to help no <,,> <{><[>who <[>tut oh i did i told you that when we had to pull out the previous week <,,> <{><[><.>because because we <.>had oh well what happened was that we had to pull out because one girl had <[>no you didn't <.>w all that sick stuff sarah yeah had hurt her knee and the other one was sick mm <&>12:00 and <.>then tut so we <.>just for personal reasons well i actually said because of illness and injury <.>but to the secretary but she didn't actually <.>a cos i had to leave here cos i had to go away to teach <,> and i asked her to do the cancellation for me cos she had to ring both the club and the school tut but she didn't give the reason so anyway the next day <.>i i got a phone call from this woman golfer who's sort of president of something or other around the city <,,> and she wanted to know if <.>it if we had in fact defaulted because the girls didn't have transport or something or other tut and she just said that she would be willing to help <{><[>or take them out or something <.>if if we got stuck and um not to feel that we were isolated <.>if if that in fact had been the cause and i said well it wasn't and that was very nice of her <[>oh that's nice that's good and um <,> tut anyway <.>she <,> i <,> was walking around with the team on monday that must have <&>13:00 been last <{><[>tuesday or wednesday <[>word they don't play together as the one group though do they no but i was walking round with two of them aha and the two opposing people and then this woman came up and she said that she was the one who'd spoken to me on the phone and she had heard been told that there were twelve girls in this competition so she'd come out to <{><[>see them and um voc and encourage them and so on and sarah particularly um found it really helpful because she just gave her a bit of coaching round the shots and was really encouraging <&>13:24 <[>laughs
