both ways this time both ways mhm san francisco going new orleans coming back <&>19:00 aha have you been <,> either of those places <{><[>before they're both new? <[>no both new oh that's nice san francisco we'd heard very well of we have some friends who come from there <,> and what's more we're going to drive <,> to a little place called paradise aha four hours' journey to the northeast where right we'll be staying with the woman i've corresponded with <,> through the soroptomists aha and <,> that should be <,> <{><[>should be interesting yes <[>different laughs you have the possibility of getting a greater understanding of life in another country yes if you view the world from a hotel room yes <.>it <.>it it's <{1><[1>VERY different <{2><[2>isn't it just yes <[1><.>not <[2>not <.>just and new orleans? oh that's just a stopover on the way back right <{><[><.>how <[>it wasn't intended we were looking to visit washington aha but the flights didn't work out right so we said well never mind <,> where can we go right <,> <{1><[1>and how long will you get there? <,> <&>20:00 in <.>new in new <{2><[2>orleans? <[1>if we <.>ch <[2>tut about two nights isn't it yes um three nights <{><[>three days <[>three nights mhm we choose to travel by day in spite of the <,> apparent lack of time because we neither of us sleep on the plane voc don't blame you so well <,> if you're not going to sleep <,> while travelling overnight <{><[>well then you'll be sleeping in the daytime <[>right yep so you'll miss that day anyway <,> and you MIGHT as well arrange to spend your nights in BEDS laughs yes i er HATE night flights on <{><[>aeroplanes especially with small children <[>mm well yes ah mm doesn't help laughs first time i went to singapore i travelled overnight coming back because i thought i'd get a WHOLE extra day at no cost tut oh yes by doing the night flight and that was the <.>f first and only time i did it by choice tut mm but er problem with singapore is almost every flight leaves <{><[><,> in the evening <[>mm every evening yes it doesn't matter what you do no <&>21:00 we had a real problem when we went to perth <,> via <{1><[1>singapore because <,> we did not want to arrive in perth at an uncivilised hour we knew we would be met <,> <{2><[2>there was NOTHING we could do <,> to persuade the woman we were staying with NOT to come and <{3><[3>meet us and she's getting on in years <{4><[4>we did NOT want her getting up at two in the morning or <,> being the person she is STAYING up till two <{5><[5>in the morning and we really based our whole trip round the best possible flight we could get from singapore to perth all the other timings fitted round that <[1>that's right <[2>right <[3>right <[4>mhm <[5>two in the morning yes mm tut <{><[>the previous time we er didn't <[>well what time did you manage? it was about eleven <,> in the evening <,> <{><[>so it wasn't too bad <[>oh that's yes but the previous time it had been three in the morning <{><[><,> and we'd thought we'd be able to persuade her to not to meet us <[>mhm mhm we said by the time we get through customs and <,> get a cab <,> get to the house it'll be breakfast time <{1><[1>won't that be lovely <{2><[2>we said <[1>right <&>22:00 <[2>yes we'll see you at breakfast <{><[>but no way <[>right <[>yes there she was sitting in the airport at three <{><[>in the morning <[>three thirty in the morning <{><[>or something <[>mm mm <,> not good no <,,> oh there are some people you just cannot help mm i i have the same problem in singapore my friends in singapore insist on coming to the airport to see you OFF even although it might be midnight or whatever and you know they're going to have to be teaching at six o clock in the morning oh yes because they teach morning school mm and so they start at six tut and you would be quite happy to <{><[><,> go to the airport unaccompanied <[>yes that's right wait for the plane <{><[>alone <[>tut that's right tut it's hard to get LOST anyway <,> actually in singapore you just about could get lost it's getting so big the airport? mm yes it's amazing the airport worst one is chicago <&>23:00 tut yes <.>barry i walked about a mile there yes and i was only on one airline <,,> if <{1><[1>i'd been switching to another airline <{2><[2>it would've been further <[1>yeah <[2>it would've been THREE miles yes cos united had about sixty gates at chicago perhaps it's meant to make up for compulsory sitting still for hours while you're in the air <,> <{><[>just building the exercise into the day <[>mm? er yes i doubt it laughs unfortunately it's an impossible airport to avoid in the united states yes it is isn't it denver <,,> denver chicago <,,> um <,> atlanta isn't it? i don't know all their flights seem to sort of go boom boom <{><[>boom boom <[>yeah boom well barry was amazed when he went through ohare to find that um tut that people in the <&>24:00 united states were sort of going to destinations like that <,> you know there were no sort of flights this way <{1><[1>they all had these sort of radial patterns <{2><[2>and to get anywhere you had to go <&>inhale <,> somewhere strange <[1>mm <[2>yes well certainly when we found out <,> the places we'll be stopping at on our way home from new orleans it didn't make us very happy <,,> i've forgotten what they <,> are now you said it was new orleans to denver to los angeles <.>to good god san francisco san francisco or something or san francisco to los angeles i've forgotten which way amazing mm how long's it going to take? <,,> to do all that sort of oh it's not too bad they <,> slot together quite neatly mhm but i hadn't realised that or i don't think we would've been going to new orleans laughter no seeing the objective was to <,> have a SIMPLE trip back right <&>25:00 and the reason we chose not to go to washington was we would've had to backtrack <,> to do it mhm tut fly to chicago and then come BACK to washington so we said oh no that's silly right and to <,> get to new orleans we have to go via chicago again but new orleans is <,> more or less directly south right that seemed reasonably sensible yeah and we thought we would then go over to los angeles and HOME right not too much out of the way at all laughter no not <,> mm when i originally made the arrangements <,> i don't think that denver was in there <,> certainly <,> the flight's changed <{><[>between then and now <[>aha oh that's nasty isn't it and with these special fares <,,> you have to pay in advance if you want to make <,> the saving right you don't actually have to PAY <,> in advance but the fare goes up progressively the <{><[>later you pay <[>oh right mhm so we paid by the end of march and after that you can't change your flights laughs <{1><[1>and if THEY change them you're stuck with what <{2><[2>they do to you <[1>and <.>what <[2>with what they do oh that's a bit rotten isn't it they could do what they pleased <&>26:00 yes mm they still can laughter so you'd <.>y you go via <,,> <{><[>san francisco and then you get a direct flight <[>san francisco to amsterdam oh right and you're having a stopover in amsterdam? oh yes very much so well how many how many days laughs are you reading up on the on the art museums well we've made a rather unfortunate discovery <,> the two that we want to see the wax museum and the van gogh are both closed on the days you're there they're both closed on monday we arrive on sunday morning we DO have sunday afternoon right they're open from one to five yep both exactly the same hours yep so we have to divide our time laughs <,,> between the two of them tut yeah i discovered that in amsterdam too i was in amsterdam on the wrong days of the week tut and you've got to get tickets in advance to go to the van gogh this year we just learnt that today <{1><[1>i had a letter from someone i've corresponded with in hilversum <,> <&>27:00 similarly it's <{2><[2>er a soroptimist friendship link and <,,> she said <,> that some days are booked out already <[1>oh really <[2>right good <{><[>lord <[>i think she was talking <.>ab about days at the time she was writing right so she wasn't talking about days at the time <{><[>we're looking at <,> but i hadn't THOUGHT of that <[>right so they're actually LIMITING the number of people <{><[>who can <.>see <[>no it's the centennial year they've probably <{><[>collected up paintings all over the place <[>oh i see yes they probably <{><[>have mm <[>they have yes all round the world it makes it all the more worthwhile going but mm mm mm yeah only if you can get a ticket so we might have to think about how we're going to organise ourselves cos we are going BACK via amsterdam as well aha this is associated with travelling with k l m oh right yes you travel via k l m you go to amsterdam of course you do well schiphol is <{><[>a wonderful <[>they offer you a free night to encourage you oh really that's nice <,> it's the <{><[>it's the <[>you fly in and out of amsterdam <{><[>and they give you a free night <[>it's the BEST airport in europe mm i <{><[>think <[>oh well we're entirely happy with <{><[>the whole arrangement <[>WONDERFUL duty free shopping there <&>28:00 but er the way back <,,> it's sunday again mm so <,,> we've got another sunday afternoon and we could say just two afternoons <{><[>the one for each museum <[>right yes but i've written to these people in hilversum and suggested that a sunday afternoon might be a nice time to go and see them right so we have to work out how to handle all of that one possibility <,> would be <,,> visiting hilversum on the monday when the museums <{><[>are closed <,> and we could visit the woman i've corresponded with <[>mm right but she was suggesting gathering some others from the club together and a sunday would be a better time to do <{><[>that <[>obviously how many of them work well that i don't know she doesn't she's retired <,> there would be other retired people but the majority would work mm so tut so it's just a case of wait and see still really <{><[>mm <[>well we have to decide yes because we'll write to her right mhm she's given us her phone number <,> i'm not quite <.>sure oh you could have all the joys of telephone conversations in foreign languages <&>29:00 oh glen's had a little experience of ringing from amsterdam already haven't you laughs yes last time we were there laughs ringing london every day saying i'm not going to make it today we were booked to spend two nights in amsterdam and that's when i fell ill oh and i kept thinking i would get better mm and that i would <,> be <,> okay to travel the next day tut so glen would ring and say well we won't be here <.>tomo today but we will tomorrow oh and he did that four days in a row laughs dear <{><[>me <[>persuading k l m to change the flights too of <{><[>course yes <[>four times in a row which you're not meant to do so he didn't have much fun in amsterdam tut <{><[>oh dear <[>he was perfectly <{><[>happy <[>oh i saw the <{><[>museums <[>he saw the museums <,,> but <{><[>er <[>yes well these things illness while you're travelling is nobody's pleasure well that's true but if it was to happen i certainly chose the best place <,> because we were travelling without wishing to spend money unnecessarily but the k l m special offer allowed us to stay <{><[>in a very nice hotel <[>right right <&>30:00 and tut and the insurance paid the rest laughter oh yes well that was well done <&>30:10 <&>discussion of tape recorder not transcribed <&>30:30
