<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>0:08 rob would you be able to <,> take me up <,> to be there on saturday morning yeah i have to be in um turangi about ten on saturday morning <.>d the third so we either go up to palmerston on friday night or um we leave here very early and i drop you in palmerston and go on to turangi well i can't go to the cabin <,,> until sort of late in the afternoon when philip and sal arrive so probably the <.>best so i could stay at hartley place yeah we <.>c well we could both stay at hartley place on friday night and then i'd leave on saturday morning yeah i think that'd probably be the best now i'm not sure if philip and sal are coming down friday night and staying at ohakune <&>1:00 mm or whether they're going to get up very early saturday morning <,,> but the main <{1><[1>thing is that we have to get the BIN ordered ready for cleaning out the garage and er cleaning out the <{2><[2>FOOD and that sort of stuff <[1>oh <[2>yeah yeah well peter was wondering whether it would fit on the <.>nor it it will fit but whether they can put the extender arm over the hedge to <,> collect it afterwards so he's he's fussing a bit about getting the car out and doing all that before the bin arrives and maybe putting the bin on the drive oh i see <,> well i don't know it's going to <.>be we thought we'd <.>do clean out the GARAGE first yeah and then put stuff in there that's to go to simon's and sal's and our place <,> and MOST of the remaining material we'll just put in the bin although i think some of the clothes could probably go to the op shop <&>2:00 <,,> oh yeah the biggest worry's going to be <,> who's going to entertain MOTHER <,> while we're doing this well you'll sort of visit once a day won't you and <,> yes well the first thing we have to get is her signing to say the house is to be sold and simon hasn't done that yet well i suppose he feels <,> softhearted about it he might need support for that you <{><[>might need to do it together <[>yes well i think perhaps i'll go up again next weekend yeah and have another go yeah and she might have reconsidered because er there's no way she can live on her own tut no well i think continue to use the name of the um gerontologist and yes keep emphasising that she can't afford it right i think and the more she stays i guess <&>3:00 at <,,> the home the more comfortable because <{><[>she did talk about enjoying the meals and so on <[>voc yes i'm i think that with her shortterm memory loss <,,> and no OTHER loss and <{><[>feeling fit and well <,> it's very hard for her to accept anyone's view that she can't manage on her own <[>yeah yeah <{><[>yeah <[>and despite the fact we all agreed to say that she couldn't cope because of she might set the house on fire i think SHE considers so what if she sets the house on fire that's that but she'd like another try <,,><&>3 <{><[>so when i was talking to sal on the phone she said <,> she thought that we might have to still clean out the house but not put it on the market because mother wouldn't sign for <,> selling it <[>yeah no well we should clean it out and get it valued so that we know yes you know what we're <,> looking at <&>4:00 well the land agent's advice was to leave the heavy furniture there yeah and have it looking furnished yeah so most of the stuff um <,,> will just be there <,> i think probably the clothes are the biggest problem laughs we may need to put some of those in suitcases because she'll suddenly decide she wants <,> something yes <{><[>yeah <[>and just store them at simon's or our place <,,> well when there's a change of season she might suddenly say she wants the blue blouse oh simon would have more storage space than us wouldn't he yes i don't think he'd mind no voc well i think that's a good idea because they're just sitting there gathering moths and dust and mites aren't they ants yeah so if if you go up next sunday presumably go on sunday <&>5:00 i'll just broach the matter of having to sell the house again and hope that simon and heather have done the same now you're quite relaxed or she's quite relaxed about the car she <{><[><.>hasn't <[>yes yes last time i said i think we should sell the car and she said i wish philip was here to do it well he's going to be so that's <{><[>all right <[>so i said he'll be down half term and he'll do it then <{><[>so i don't think think there'll be any problems over that at all <[>yeah voc yeah er but there's going to be <.>m much more problem over the house because well it's the last sort of point of personal contact <{><[>isn't it <[>well she's so fit and well the operation might not have even happened as far as she's concerned yeah all she can remember is the doctor saying she was stapled up so in the innards so she <.>s sees no reason and her shortterm memory loss <,> is not something that she accepts but she's aware of it though because she talks about it i can't remember anything these days i know but <.>i but that's just a saying i don't think she really BELIEVES that it affects the fact that she can't live on her own any more <&>6:00 mm because her longterm memory <,> has improved immensely and you see the day after the christening when she couldn't remember it happening <{1><[1>although she'd been the centre of <{2><[2>attention <[1>yeah <[2>yeah yeah a month later she could remember with prompts yes remembered andrew said how he'd grown next time she saw him all those sorts of things are quite well <{><[>did she <[>orderly still she's talking <.>a you know about trying a second time we should er we should say i think that we well we might need a second geriatric opinion well she agreed that her own doctor need not come to see her at the home any more that she would see the home doctor well five minutes <&>7:00 later more or less she saw her doctor in the corridor and expects him now to come and see her oh i think that we could organise that with the home that the arrangement is that missus warren's doctor is <,> the house doctor yes but she remembers <.>th that her previous doctor was there and why wasn't he coming to see her so it may be that HE needs to say that she can't live at <{><[>home on her own any more somebody familiar <[>yeah yeah so <.>ha well voc go back to midterm how do you see that <,> week if we go up on friday night and i go on to turangi yes i can either stay in turangi that night and come back to <,> palmerston on <,> sunday <,,> tut but i have to be at work on monday tuesday wednesday yes now are you planning to spend the whole week at <,> <{1><[1>motor camp with sal and philip <{2><[2>and cindy <&>8:00 <[1>yes <[2>yes yes we've booked the cabin and we just feel that we need to get the whole house and grounds cleaned the agents round the bin filled and removed er the car put into auction and should voc we get all that done quickly they might come down to wellington for a little break oh yeah but we have booked into the <,> into the motor camp and <{1><[1>philip will bring the van this time with lots of er gear in it to fix <{2><[2>things and so on but <[1>yeah <[2>yeah yeah the land agent's suggestion having not seen the house was that we don't spend much on it yeah no <{><[>right <[>not even <,,> fix up the rusty gate or anything like that i agree with that i think anyone coming in there would just want to do so much <{><[>that they might as well <,> just do it <[>yes yes but on the other hand we need to get as much as we can for it because otherwise um there won't be enough to pay the weekly fees in the home <&>9:00 mm <,,> yeah um <,,> yeah now just give voc give some thought to um my meeting at turangi <{><[>tut <[>oh hold on what so when will you be able to come back to palmerston well i at a pinch i could come back on saturday night yes no i don't think that's a good idea call in on sunday yeah because there may be some stuff you can take back to wellington coughs <{><[>yeah <[><.>tha that <{1><[1>we've just decided i'm going to <{2><[2>have <[1>yeah <[2>right yeah no that <.>alr well that's what i think i'll probably do yes but <,,> yeah okay what i <,> want to get across to the um natural history society is that we should persist with this idea of planning a marae visit it didn't happen on this year's <&>10:00 <{1><[1>programme because er hone matangaro was <,> er you know preoccupied with a whole lot of hui and he <.>j it just didn't suit but i think we need to insist with <{2><[2>pete voc <,> that it's just built in as tut a regular thing <[1>no <[2>yes and would that involve <,,> hui or just a visit oh no i think an overnight i think we should arrange to meet um in turangi and be called on at two oclock in the afternoon and go <.>t through you know have the advantage of being um being talked to about towharita and you know the mountains and <{><[>oh <[>and <.>d do you see that as a night yeah a <.>ni <{><[>er noho marae <[>time right and then what about the next morning <&>11:00 well we can either leave you know mid morning and do some work somewhere or we can do a little trip or something like that but i think the overnight experience is it would be very attractive to a lot of members yes and it's <.>o it's our sort of mark of respect to tuwharita <.>w you know we've been operating <,> and i i've been pressing for some time that we <,> establish a better LINK with them and it seems to me that that's a really good way of doing it go to their marae and <,,> show that we really care and stay overnight and receive their hospitality yes the the marae that we're going to is on what side the eastern side <,> of of taupo and we're just going there because oh it's in turangi there is there are <{><[>several in turangi <[>oh oh i thought it was along the road and <{><[>up the side a bit <[>no and hone is very um <,,> you know they have a lot <&>12:00 of um powhiris and hui and so on <{><[>so it's not not a out of the ordinary at all <[>oh well where would we stay on friday night well i think people can make their own arrangements <{><[>and <[>and just gather yeah on saturday <{><[>yes that's a good idea <[>yeah gather at um park headquarters right now that's one thing the other er i've <,> um talked to ken davis about the photographic competition and <,> he said the kodak guy was really quite offputting and i suggested that he <,> follow up his hanimex <&>pronounced as haminex contact because tut you know he'd have a bit more information <{1><[1>and he can ask better questions but i asked a guy at work <,> who enters photographic competitions <{2><[2>he said he enters everything and wins prizes and they're usually photographic prizes <[1>mm <[2>mm mhm um of films or <,> enlargers or <,> whatever and they're small and large and you really have to <&>13:00 advertise what's going to happen to the pictures the you know the films what that's part of the attraction right <{><[>so are people looking for publicity if they win <[>and partly <.>e but amateur photographers <.>y you know you get two thousand and eight of them might be suitable for publication you know people just send in snapshots um and you get a very small number that are really usable could yes <.>would so there <.>wou there would be UNLIKELY to be enough to make a booklet or there's a surfeit <{><[>of books on the park i suppose <[>well yes there is and there isn't i think that there's a <.>s probably a spot for a photographic essay on the park all the same i mean we've got the restless land and we've got <,,> volcanoes of the south wind and so on but they've got a lot of text AND photographs but there's nothing <,,> <&>14:00 we could ask um set it up as one of the categories or or <,,> whatever for the competition that <.>u unusual shots of the park and encourage people to go into the park and photograph <.>th this guy says there is a LOT of interest in photography at secondary schools it's a um fifth form and sixth form subject and that they you know in competitions that he goes into there's a lot of interest so i'd <{1><[1>think it's probably worth <,,> persevering with <{2><[2>you <[1>mm <[2>is it expensive to <.>rai you know to set up not particularly if IF the um the photographic companies come to the party and offer prizes but the way the um kodak guy was talking was er <,> you know <.>at attracting NAMED photographers we would have to invest <,,> quite large amounts <&>15:00 of money and guarantee publication in <,> national geographic or new zealand geographer or yes something clears throat and we can't necessarily do that <{><[>because we don't control <,> any of those magazines and i had the impression that it would attract established photographers sort of like craig potton or i don't necessarily want to do that i mean he he's been very sympathetic to the park <[>no i don't think it would attract people like him his exposure through the calendars and those <{1><[1>sorts of things is IMMENSE <{2><[2>um and he could be invited <{3><[3>perhaps to be the judge in which case you'd have to pay for his expenses <[1>yes <[2>yeah <[3>clears throat yeah <,,> this guy <.>o <.>a at work also said um <,> you know why don't you do a calendar oh use the best the twelve best for the calendar yes <&>16:00 but i think that market's overloaded yes and who who on EARTH would we get to do the marketing and the publicity er oh jack newby <,,> yes i just don't think that he's experienced enough <,> it's it's a sort of BIG league <,> and they're ready in <,> july and august yeah for overseas <{><[>posting so we'd be looking a year away anyway <[>yeah the a lot of the photographs in volcanoes and um routes of fire um <.>a are keen amateurs i mean <.>th a lot of the photographs are dan burton or um jeremy's or <,> other PARK STAFF you know <{1><[1>they've got good photographic equipment um so i think that's worth <,> persevering with and <.>t you know we don't <.>ha there's <.>not we're not in a hurry the um the guy <,> from kodak said that the one <.>in the photographic competition in the listener <&>17:00 produced a fairly low turnout and mediocre quality <,> well <{2><[2>i've yeah i've no way way of judging <[1>yes <[2>oh so what was what was the topic for that oh it had various categories summer and children and humour and right so on yes so our theme would be the park <{1><[1>would it be PEOPLE in the park or <{2><[2>things in the park or <[1>yeah i think so <[2>voc well <,> voc yeah i've said to ken <.>r raise it at the meeting and we'll think it through um i would think there'd be different categories <&>17:37
