<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side two <&>0:07 oh well johnny my last day today please don't go please don't go laughs taking over yep how's the confidence <,> oh not too bad now no a week ago i felt um <,,> sort <.>of er not lost but <{><[>er didn't feel confident <[>yeah but er clears throat now a lot of things have fallen into place which is good yeah i'm very much relieved that's good just little things <,> <{><[><.>and <[>it's not a tough job basically i would say the toughest job would be the <,> <.>negotiating <.>renegot <.>gotiating with businesses to get the best rates for the trust mm that's something that you learn from <&>1:00 experience <{><[>i suppose <[>word can't teach you anything there er um <,,> took me a while <.>to myself to learn to feel you're beginning to pick it up <,> <{><[>word <[>you got to have <,,> er sort of <.>s GUTS and take a risk sort of push and push and push and yeah well a lot of it is just er clears throat exhales a <.>traff trafficking um approach anyway mm basically you say okay um this supplier's probably not giving me <.>this this much discount can you match it or improve it if not you know no point <.>is discussing um <.>any anything further yeah just approach it like this and seem to work um did that with hertz and now budget um <{><[>yeah <&>2:00 <[>that's a classic example you can get yeah it's er tut and ansett as well with air new zealand yeah <,> yeah exhales you <.>can <,> match those up against each other really easily i'd say yeah exactly where there is competition there is not a problem inhales mm where there's not then oh god laughs you have to think of something else yeah different approach we're not a profit organisation yeah <,> how will we survive laughs exactly no i think um i'm not expecting to walk into THAT area like a mm like a you know a natural pro or anything you got to mm have a go at it oh well maybe make a few mistakes on the way yep why not <,> <{><[>you can always LEARN from your mistakes <[>you can always say no yeah and you can always say no to them yeah <&>3:00 you know if your negotiations <{><[>haven't gone wrong as long as you're not a monopolist <[>clears throat that's right laughs mm which they won't be <,> voc <,> inhales yeah <,,> <{><[>oh word <[>and <.>in in the last um in the last week i've got to know everyone <.>m on a more personal basis mm you know it started <{1><[1><.>t oh hello hello you know <{2><[2>da de da da da now i don't you know there's still a bit of distance while they get to know you <[1>word <[2>yeah yeah now there's a little bit more warmth which is good well <{><[>the trust being a small organisation you tend to um get to know the staff pretty well i think but mind you it all comes down to your <.>personal personality <&>pronounced sonality once again um <,> like er tracy jordan you know how she's not that popular <[>voc mm um you know basically even though it's word she depends on her personality sniffs er now <&>4:00 elizabeth's <.>on is your staff basically sorry? <{><[><.>elizabeth <[>elizabeth <.>sh okay um so basically you can ask her to do whatever you want but er always be careful that er you've got to look after her as well mm yeah no i realise that basically you know um <,> that she's a nice girl and <,> she's quite good actually er i like her what comes in early works extra hours if she needs to yeah and er for her age she er she's er twenty this year is not twenty yet er nineteen plus inhales um she's quite mature in fact um <,> for her age <,> um in relation to her work i think basically she's applied herself really well and um she got a good attitude yeah she likes her job mm which is good yep so er clears throat important to take care of yourself <{><[>sniffs <&>5:00 <[>mm she doesn't mind doing the receptionist bit either yeah yeah <.>sh which is good mm and er be aware of the politics mm clears throat in the office er don't forget that er bloody <.>gos gossipers come on yeah independent yeah <{><[>yeah <[>well i hadn't actually had much contact with that sort of stuff yet but um i'm wary of it <{><[>yeah but <[>who knows what that says <,,><&>3 <{1><[1>q <,> e d dum dum <{2><[2>dum <,,> tut yeah <[1>exhales <[2>word great help then oh oh FLIPping heck <&>recording cuts out briefly <{><[>yeah sniffs <[>laughs we were rudely interrupted <{><[>laughs <[>that's right laughs <,> never mind yeah we were talking about politics talking yep um clears throat now don't forget that the accounting department is separate from all the other departments in the sen that <.>y in the <&>6:00 sense that you've got to um SCRUTinise each department um sniffs wherever possible mhm um whenever there's an overrun over budget <,> tut or er inhales basically um just not forming not performing that you've got to er you know tell them off more or less mm say look <{><[>what's the story bring them back in line <[>word exactly um sniffs <{><[><.>s <[><.>have budget time will be the toughest for you because you've got to be really tough there sniffs if the previous year we did not make a profit or made a LOSS let's say inhales then you've got to er basically evaluate to see what sort of budget <.>you have got to prepare a tight budget or um you know a budget a <{><[>word yeah <[>word yeah and er well that's the worst time for you you won't be <.>very popular nah not many <{><[>friends laughs <[>um for that time no <{><[>sniffs <[>is that um more <&>7:00 up here or down at hay's as well i mean they've <{><[>all got BUDGets word <[>both ways both ways clears throat both ways <{><[>sniffs <[>and the auckland office do they have much nah they haven't got a budget no we just let them have a few expenditures and yeah mm okay mhm good i have to get down to hay's at some stage yeah that was sort of planned from you <{1><[1>know dad said from day one <{2><[2>oh we'll get you down there pretty soon <[1>word <[2>yeah like i say you know yeah just imagine you were saying that you wanted to do an word course mhm you know and how come i never did it just imagine that you're just trying to make a trip a one day trip to word and you still <{1><[1>haven't been there and how long have you been here close to a <{2><[2>month yeah <[1>word <[2>three weeks three weeks to a month yeah exactly so um that's why i said you know <{><[>i'd be amazed if you would have time to actually do a course <[>mhm i've been here twenty two days that's a course yes the length of a course and i haven't been <{><[>able to get away for a day <&>8:00 <[>clears throat sniffs yep not surprising really though <{1><[1>EARly days i'm still trying to get set in <{2><[2>settled in <[1>word <[2>yeah yeah yeah but yeah <{><[>word <[>but er yeah so the people down at hay's um <,> <.>pr reasonable people? voc very down to earth they are mhm um bill johnson the school director is er <,> a bag of laughs <{><[>laughs <[>laughs um <.>you'll you'll get along well with him yeah yeah um the instructors i don't know how well you know them um i never got to know them sniffs um because every time i was there they were out on schemes and so forth you get to know a few of them mhm um but bursars people they are dealing with down at the school <.>the the school director deputy school director and all the other heads of departments that's about it sniffs <&>9:00 so <.>wha what have you got then bill johnson who's the deputy roger crosby he's the deputy is he yeah so he's he actually authorises <{1><[1>a lot of those costs <{2><[2>so <[1>yeah <[2>that's right he's in charge of training equipment okay yeah all right <{><[>i don't really need to know <[>clears throat sniffs <{><[>mm <[>and what the cafeteria and <{><[>staff canteen <[>YEP jim havers is the catering director jay aitken the um <{1><[1>maintenance director and word and think of the secretary <{2><[2>yeah <[1>word yeah <[2>and that many dealing through word oh yeah all the time inquiries invoices running accounts and so forth <{><[>sniffs <[>that's good yeah yep i've talked to about three <&>pronounced sri people i think <{><[>from there and hay's and they sound really good <[>yeah yeah <{><[>yeah <[>not gonna have any clears throat CLASHes i don't think no you wouldn't any clash would be in the office here sniffs good clears throat well not good but laughs yeah it's good it'll be no more yeah <&>10:00 potentially no more anyway well basically i've been fine here what five years four and a half years i've been here tut and um i've got along with er les the director very well because um tut we were in basically tut we always follow each other um you know at meetings and so forth <.>w um he needed to get the figures i provided rough figures for him um he needed a report i provided a good report for him and so forth and so basically when you you know you and um <.>m basically myself um made everything further on um you know <,> do not perform satisfactory tut um he was always there to <.>suppor support me and gave me the confidence to go on and on sniffs and he's been great one of the best bosses i've ever had is he <,> <{><[>word <&>11:00 <[>um so that support you need to um obtain from him i don't know whether you've got to earn it or what but er i'm sure it'll pass you know support you fully anyway mm um clears throat yeah <{><[>but yeah i know in like some departments the support was not there because er the their approach was different um didn't like their approach perhaps i don't know sniffs <[><.>s yeah <.>i i noted yesterday that um les does support the staff really well yeah like in that meeting he was trying to get shelley's input yeah and he was saying yep really good idea you know that's <{><[>really good we'll put that up on the board that's that's good shelley <[>yeah yeah <{><[>that's right <[>just try and get her build her confidence <{><[>to start making a um <.>inp input into the discussion <[>YEAH exactly which is good cos otherwise you know i mean people like shelley um and joanne probably feel like they haven't got too much to offer <{1><[1>in the way of um you know suggestions which <{2><[2>would improve <[1>yeah <&>12:00 <[2>exactly think that but they do <{><[>i <.>mean <[>but you do yeah exactly and it's a matter of <{><[>just <[>yeah clears throat sniffs giving <{><[>them the confidence to to <[>sniffs clears throat just say it yep and <{1><[1>that's one thing i find in new zealand is that okay um even at what level they always ask for the input you know the top level middle <&>trips over own tongue you know lower level you know your input is always valuable and basically they DO try to GET your input into whatever problems they've got or any other matters <{2><[2><,> like in malaysia it's different <,> malaysia is the top management makes the decision and the middle management have to follow whatever has been decided and that is basically it <{3><[3>it carries on and so in terms of problem solving i don't think um the solutions would be as great as um what <&>13:00 you obtain here in new zealand um you might be limited because one thing i found like brainstorming sessions like we had yesterday is just er you know great i mean you've got everyone's contribution and basically um you get more ideas as well <&>13:14 <[1>that's good <[2>inhales yeah <[3>voc
