<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>1:37 what day are you going um home in the holidays um <,,> i'm leaving <,> probably friday morning <,> because i WAS going to go home thursday night but my sister's graduating on the friday oh right <{><[>yeah <[>so i've got to go home <.>frid be home by then but marina wants me to go out to the pub with her oh yeah <.>c sarah's got um she's in <.>the in <.>the doing the capping revue and she's got practices all this week and next week doing things for that so she's not going home <{><[>till quite late <[>oh what are you doing oh i'm probably going home on sunday chris might give me a ride <,> um i don't really want to go home with sarah because she's a really bad driver and she might kill me <,> <{><[>and besides that yeah <[>yeah laughs <.>she <.>she er could do mm <,> well i'll take you as far as palmie if you wanted to on FRIday but <{><[>i don't think <.>that's <[>no i'm lucky i'm not working these holidays mm oh i HATE it working in that <.>fuck i mean that factory laughs um well when are you working in the factory well i <.>ha i was all last summer and i <.>wo did <.>g last time i went home in the may holidays last year i worked and it just SUCKED because i didn't get any work done or anything so and DAD always DAD's always nagging me to work and so <.>you i earn about it's about an extra six hundred bucks oh no bit less than that if i work for two weeks but i've got too <&>3:00 much WORK to do to do that mm plus i don't think i want to go back there <{1><[1>ever ever again <{2><[2>laughs <[1>could <.>you <[2>could you work just one week tut um no oh nah it's not <.>wor oh besides the fact that i can't these holidays because i'm babysitting the boys <{><[>well mum and dad are going away to aussie <[>what may <.>holi oh <.>this right THIS holidays you are yep and so i'm looking after the boys and um susan's coming home for a couple <{><[>of weeks word <[>when are <.>your when are <.>your when are your parents going to be away er <,,> they're leaving on the monday <.>vo oh and how long two weeks full two weeks? yeah HEY <{><[>i'll be over <[>i YEAH i'll be over <{1><[1>i'll come over and <{2><[2>stay a few days <[1>yeah <[2>my sister's er my sister's yeah she's home oh she's coming next friday <.>the <.>th and she's dropping in to see me but i've got a test that afternoon she wants to see the flat oh but um besides <{><[>that <[>everyone does yeah? EVERYone go oh gosh i wonder what michelle's flat's like <{1><[1>you know you know it's just oh heaps of people mention it because everyone <&>4:00 knows oh fabbs's father <.>bought you know <{2><[2>built him a flat on the terrace <[1><.>who who's everyone <[2>no i don't know who started oh fabbs doesn't like everyone to know cos i think people tend to give him a bit <.>of bit of a hassle yeah yeah well everyone knows <.>basi there are a lot of people do anyway and damon's coming up to see me as well he was gonna come up and stay for a couple of days during the holidays but i don't think my sister would appreciate that <{><[>laughs <[>why not well you know susan <{><[>oh yeah sort of don't you <[>no i don't i don't even i never met her oh she's a bit yeah oh no she won't like it plus there's nowhere <{><[>for him to sleep anyway plus she'd probably tell mum and dad and mum would have a fit if she found out that he'd come home to stay <[>bit prudish <.>but damon's just a friend yeah but <.>mum you know MUM she's not like that <,> she'd have a fit laughs oh dear oh well well well I'LL be over mm um i don't know how long i'm gonna last at home oh you'll be right i'll probably come back for the second week to stay <.>at down in wellington and work cos <&>5:00 i've got a lot of essays and <{><[>projects due in <[>mm sarah's not staying at home for the full two weeks cos she knows that she won't get on with her parents tut i'll be fine because they're not at home laughs <{1><[1>but um i mean i'm not going home midterm i just gonna stay down here when i'm not <.>having got <.>an when i haven't got exams and then i'm gonna go up to your place midterm and then um i'm only gonna go home for say a week during the august holidays i'll stay down here cos that way mum and i won't kill each other <{2><[2>i'm not spending <.>a i'm NOT spending another summer at home last summer was bad mm didn't work out <{3><[3>too well <[1>yeah <[2>yes throttle <[3>go <.>t go to japan yeah well <{1><[1>hopefully i've been to talk to them about it i <.>h i don't know when i'll apply for that in a little while <{2><[2>but <.>really that'd be SO GOOD <{3><[3>and mum and dad said they'd pay for the ticket over inhales <{4><[4>so <[1>that's what you need to do <[2>yeah <[3>mm <[4>that's good yep it's what i need cos my japanese isn't very good at the moment not my speaking anyway no it'd be REALLY COOL if you could go to <.>jap <&>6:00 <.>japanese japan god stuffed that up <{><[>but i mean voc <.>i i'd LOVE to go overseas mySELF if i was doing all that especially if i'd done a language <,,> i've always wanted to do greek laughs <[>mm greek? i've ALWAYS wanted to do yeah greek i <.>want <.>that's i want to go over to the greek islands over there oh just because you watched that video no before that he's a SPUNK before THAT no there won't be too many of them around but um <,> i just want <.>to <{1><[1>yeah <.>i when i've finished my degree and after i've been to japan for a year i just want to backpack around <.>a all of europe all of those places <{2><[2>mind you everyone wants to do that but where do you get the money from <[1>mm <[2>SO do I oh you just take out a student loan every year and let the interest mount up and <.>w by the time you come back <.>you're oh mind you you CAN'T go overseas if you've got a student loan <{><[>sort of can you <[>nah oh you can <{><[>as long as they know where you are <[>can you yeah <{><[>oh that's all right <[>so that you can't run away and hide or look you win lotto laughs mm yeah i reckon <&>7:00 oh no i want to <.>go i really want to <.>see go to rome yeah and look at all the <.>old cos i studied classics for two years tut oh yeah i was thinking about doing that next <{><[>year <[>and i <.>want i'm really keen on going to um places like er <.>ind not <.>ind yeah india and sort of um real ASIAN places <.>really not the touristy bits but really just experiencing life what it's <{><[>like in other countries <[>yeah yeah tut SO does everyone else yeah MONEY god everyone wants <{><[>money <[>well if i do that jet scheme i'm hoping to um if i get into that they pay you forty five thousand <{><[>a year <[>into <.>the into the what it's called jet scheme it's japan exchange programme <{1><[1>or something like that and they pay you forty five thousand to be a teacher's assistant you're not even actually teaching the class you're just helping the teacher out and they pay you forty five thousand and <.>you you <.>ha you stay with a family they give you a home <&>8:00 <{2><[2>and you come back with forty five thousand you don't lose much um in tax cos the <.>ja tax differences between japan and new zealand <[1>oh yeah <[2>AWEsome awesome you come back RICH i mean <.>forty you know it's <{><[>not bad first year out of university <[>yeah no way <.>actu oh talk <.>about my exboyfriend colin <{><[>from seventh form he did um engineering degree in <.>canterbury did honours <[>mm mm and within three months of graduating he got a JOB with the government with the secret services <.>bureau secret communications or whatever it is bureau and he was earning forty three thousand dollars a year a YEAR to start off with that's so good i mean imagine what it's gonna be <{><[>like <.>in <[>and he got <.>ap he got a pay rise last year oh good oh gee laughs wouldn't it make you spew i should be getting a job this year actually i was gonna um tutor some japanese students in english if they needed help and then like they could reciprocate and give me the help in my <.>j speaking japanese but i haven't got round to it i mean even though i'm laughs i've only got inhales tut about thirteen or fourteen hours a week <.>and <.>s still have to do heaps of work <{><[>anyway <[>mm yeah i was gonna get a job i could do with a job but i don't want it over the weekends i want it during the week like that job i was <.>ap going to apply for look after that boy <{1><[1>every monday tuesday wednesdays five to six MISTER WHIPPY <{2><[2>give me a mister whippy <{3><[3>yum <[1>yeah <[2>yum <[3>yum yum i could do with one of <{1><[1>those die for <{2><[2>one actually <[1>mm <[2>we'll go for a drive afterwards and get <.>some some CHOCOLATE shall we <{><[>laughs mm <[>yeah could do with some but um <{><[>that job mm <[>keep me going keep me alive oh yeah that job i rang up and the lady had just given it to someone else <.>a a <.>teach ex teacher an old student teacher of the boy's so he already knew the guy so that's what she thought but she said you know <.>sh i chatted away for about ten minutes <{1><[1>on the telephone you know bit <.>of big grease here and there inhales but um <.>she's she took my phone number in case things didn't work out <{2><[2>and i'm STILL looking for a job <[1>right <[2>marina's got some though hasn't she marina's found a woman to babysit <&>10:00 for yeah i think so i want some ice cream <.>m mind you that stuff's like plastic it's <{><[>plastic it's gross <[>yeah let's go out for MOVENpick you mean YES i could do with some of that right <{><[><.>n no <[><.>what what flavour oh what was that stuff last time <{><[>it <.>was <[>oh we had white chocolate last time we won't get that oh i should get some money out first laughs i <.>for <{><[><.>i <[>i spent SO much money in the last couple of weeks it's HEAPS lately on that kind of thing like i spent twenty six bucks on that bottle of baileys and whatever else and i bought some wine the other night that christopher didn't even want to drink <{><[>yeah <[>that oh well oh that we had <.>that oh we had that at marina's didn't we yeah that was <{1><[1>it i didn't like that <{2><[2>it <.>was <[1>yeah <[2>it WASN'T that nice was it it <.>was it was DRY sorry <.>i i sort of made you <.>chip buy that didn't i both laugh my usual stuff <{><[>but it was in my usual cheapo bottle <[>i recognised it i recognised <{><[>it <[>you old wino i'm <.>not mum and dad must drink it or something cos i recognised it oh <{1><[1>i didn't like that at all but hey <{2><[2>marina wants to go out to to dinner next week <{3><[3>cos her friend kate's here on sunday <[1>i recognised the label <[2>what <[3>word that's right thursday night i think well she wants me to go out thursday night with with her to pubs and stuff is that the night she wants to go
