<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>5:24 my brother's going to turn into a street kid laughs your brother? yeah oh you know i said he was leaving school oh yeah well he's LEFT school <{><[>and he was <.>going actually there was this job down at um the opera going <[>yeah tut oh yeah <{><[>yeah <[>but um tut i heard about it through julie whose boyfriend at the time was working there but had left <.>on <{1><[1>anyway um there was <{2><[2>this <.>job <[1>yeah <[2>what's it like i haven't been there is it any good i walked in once and it was er looks a bit tacky we stayed there for a drink <.>and well it was full of people so it was kind of hard to tell what it was like <.>but mm frank was there going on about the decor i mean it was okay but it was nothing like startling like um perhaps paradiso <.>or <&>6:00 paradiso that's nice that's got <{1><[1>class though eh that's got real style <{2><[2>word <[1>or ecstasy <[2>yeah yeah <{><[>i prefer <.>the word <[>ecstasy's a bit kind <.>of tut i don't know that kind <.>of it's a bit garish i think kind of a bit OVER <{><[>done <[>clears throat yeah <{><[>i actually quite like it <[>it has no subtleties yeah laughs right but hey you know <{><[>not everyone's got the same taste <[>anyway <.>so so your brother's turned into a street kid <{><[>did <.>he he <.>not didn't take the job <[>oh no <.>well um oh he didn't get it in the end they decided they didn't want to hire a school leaver the other thing is um oh right coughs excuse me the other thing is they like to hire <{><[>people on the dole <[>sniffs oh <{><[>yeah <[>cos then they get money out the government voc for doing it oh really cos the government pays them to take people off the dole or a certain kind of <{><[>subsidy <[>oh really i didn't know that yeah so <,> see i'd have helped if you were on the dole he said well i'm not laughs oh really so he's not at school and he hasn't got a job and i <.>mean <,> so then what <{><[>is he doing during the day <[>jobs for school leavers what's he <.>gonna <,,> i don't know i mean he said he'd been looking around for jobs yeah but there won't be a hell of a lot around of course i mean <.>noth i mean oh unless he wants to work in some bum place like bloody um <&>7:00 mcdonald's or something oh yeah that's not really a job is it <{><[>laughs <[>it's <.>not it's not a job it's just kind <.>of <,> it's the most tedious boring thing on earth <,> working in a cafe or something i <{1><[1>mean you <.>w you don't mind working in a place like mcdonald's if you're actually GOING somewhere or DOING something else you <{2><[2>know if it's just a parttime occupation you know that you're actually achieving something in another way but you can't really achieve anything by working at mcdonald's <{3><[3>unless you want to become a manager or something <[1>yeah <[2>mm <[3>not fulltime yeah no that'd just be depressing yeah um have you worked there what no no i have laughs have you yeah actually jen has as well has she oh <{><[>well <[>deep dark secrets from the past yes <,,> mm but i saw him wandering around town it was funny seeing him in town because i don't sort of see him in that context very often <{><[>you know and he just kind of <.>looked he looked bigger laughs <[>oh yeah did he it was funny <{><[>cos you know he's just like my little brother <[>bigger than you yeah yeah but <.>he's they look older he's seventeen and he's taller than i am and er <{><[>laughs <[>you should bring him around to the flat one day <&>8:00 yeah i should really yeah you SHOULD well <.>l lillian hasn't <.>been my sister hasn't been around either i found out <{><[>the other day <[>tut oh well why don't you <.>b invite them both around for dinner oh i should really shouldn't i make <.>wh what did you make for dinner <{><[>last night that looked NICE all those scones <.>and <[>family thing no that was <.>carl's they were carl's scones oh <{><[>right <[>um i <{><[>just made <.>some <[>but that black pudding thing what <.>was no it wasn't black pudding <{><[>what was it you know <[>it was just chocolate cake oh was that just chocolate cake yeah was that just made in a bowl or something oh i just made it in that glass dish yeah oh right except it sunk in the middle cos er <,> i opened it <,> well sort of part <.>way part way cooked <.>and yeah me and carl kind of looked at it and went oh it's probably not cooked eh stick a knife in it voc and it just kind of collapsed <{><[>in the middle <[>oh no oh no <,,> yeah well shall we listen to ourselves cos i think we've been talking for <,> a long time haven't we oh it's only been about five minutes or something oh REALLY fifteen minutes is ages to talk FIFteen <{1><[1>minutes yeah it's <.>not yeah is yeah it is i <{2><[2>suppose <[1>laughs <[2>we might as well get fifteen minutes CONTINUOUS CONVERSATION continuous <{><[>conversation well we can talk about things that are quite i don't know RELEVANT to this time in our lives <[>laughs laughs laughs <&>9:00 laughs yeah we can be like <.>the er we can be <{><[>historians <[>people come across these right and they'll write it down and <.>they'll um tut they'll start a religion up round it because we're just saying <.>such yeah laughs <{><[>astounding things <[><.>just <{><[>yeah <[>laughs WE ARE <,,> we are the makers of history we ARE <{><[><.>well we're we're <.>the we're <.>the <.>the <.>the the keepers of history <[>yeah mm <,> tut oh laughs oh i was reading in this book about that actually and there was <.>a <,,> oh he was kind of <.>des this guy was describing how if you <.>found like if you found the ultimate answer mm um to what to life to life i <{1><[1>suppose yeah whatever <{2><[2>one of <.>these one of these things ANYWAY if you did and you <.>wrote you <.>could so you wrote it down right <[1>oh god <[2>whatever it was laughs yeah <,> and you <.>could oh you know how religion's caused all this bullshit <.>and yeah strife and wars and all the rest of it <{><[>well he <.>s well he reckoned there was no way you could avoid it because you'd write it down <[>yeah <&>10:00 mhm and that'd <.>be you know and you'd want people to know mm but you wouldn't want people to change it <{><[>right because i mean writing things down from one place to another things would get changed and so on <[>mm mm and um so you'd have to have like the GUARDIANS <.>of of the pages is what it was called <{><[>you know he just kind of called it the pages just for a name <[>mm mm and you'd have to have the GUARDIANS of the PAGES that MADE SURE that you know everything was kept consistent tut oh and you know then perhaps one bunch of people would think that it was supposed to be one way and another bunch would think it was supposed to be ANOTHER way and you'd get these rival sects and <{><[>something like that <.>and <[>OH yeah must get some loo paper yeah word YEAH and um clears throat tut <,> yeah and just couldn't avoid this whole stupid religious conflict thing <&>sighs <{><[>laughs <[>oh it's like last <{><[>night <[>who was saying this <&>11:00 this is um oh it's in a richard bach book <{><[>clears throat <[>who's richard bach one of his <.>char have you heard of um <,> jonathan livingston seagull yeah that's good yeah <{><[>that was him <[>oh yeah oh yeah sniffs oh no oh well <&>11:09 <&>a passerby talks to DM and HI not transcribed <&>11:19 did you do russian yeah last year oh yeah probably it was good apparently it's um <.>what <{><[>what <.>year at what stage <[>changed a bit this year just stage one stage one yeah twelve credits worth well you needed twelve credits of a language to be doing linguistics um oh wow so say something say something in <{1><[1>russian i can't remember any russian people say this to me <{2><[2>and i go i don't know <[1>yeah <[2>go on you MUST i can remember some french yeah but i can remember some french too and <.>i it <.>was that was fifth form no <.>i what did i word well you can say um prevet <{><[>prevet <[>which is just hello or hi whatever <&>12:00 yeah <.>pretty pretty relaxed <{><[>sort of a greeting prevet <[>prevet prevet laughs prevet <{><[>yeah it <.>does it does sound kind of italian laughs <[>that sounds a bit italian prevet er a bientot <.>that's a bientot yeah that's right i tried <{1><[1>to leave <.>jen jen a note in <.>f er in <{2><[2>french <[1><&>sings <[2>oh that's right laughs and got it wrong laughs and she corrected you which <.>was <{><[>laughs <[>yeah well hey i haven't done french for a long time <{><[>mm <[>i think she did it at varsity didn't she i <.>think yeah no i think her mother's a french teacher or her mother speaks french <{><[>or something yeah <[>oh does she oh right no her mother ISN'T a french teacher she's a lecturer in law but she's <.>a she <.>u she <.>ca you know <.>sh i think she used to teach french yeah I have trouble <.>remember remembering what everyone does right cos i <.>mean yeah her father's a lawyer oh yeah i think no yeah she said he was the other night and then <{1><[1>i went oh hang on i <.>thought i thought jen's mum was a lawyer as well but <{2><[2>she lectures in law so <{3><[3>they're both lawyers <[1>word he is <[2>they are <[3>yeah yeah right <,> oh <&>13:00 and carl's dad owns a telecommunications kind <.>of yeah what was it that's where the cellphone comes from right yeah clears throat <,,><&>3 <.>and <,,> yeah my god you're getting orange in your beard orange yeah <.>i i know it's funny eh WOW laughs where did that come from i don't know i've noticed it before <{><[>though eh it's funny laughs <[>laughs choice it looks a bit like you've hennaed it or something you know <{><[>little wispy bits <[>hennaed yeah is that like a dye or something <.>it's no it's <.>just it's a root yeah it is a dye but <.>it's it's made out <.>of it's a natural dye right it's just a root word mm laughs smells <.>like dyed beard OH voc there was <.>this cow shit laughs does it <{1><[1>oh well that must be useful <{2><[2>laughs <,> there was this guy who used to wander <.>around oh he's still around actually michael with a beard <[1>yeah <[2>laughs yeah and he bleached it <{1><[1>actually i think he bleached his hair as well <{2><[2>yeah he <&>14:00 had a bleached hair and a bleached beard that's right <{3><[3>really odd <[1>oh god <[2>oh no <[3><.>breach bleached eyebrows? i don't know um can't remember but <{><[>yeah <[><.>di did it look good? or terrible um <,> it looked different <{><[>um i mean i wouldn't do it but laughs <[>word oh you know if he want to do it then fair enough yeah cos he's got quite dark hair otherwise you know and then it started kind of growing out <{><[>laughs <[>be like you bleaching your hair my god yeah or me it'd look pretty odd wouldn't it ridiculous laughs although it might look all right if you had it i was thinking about it if i ever had to bleach my hair like mm i <.>don't not <.>had i mean there's no reason why i had to but if i wanted i'd have my hair really SHORT like really really short and then bleach it yeah cos i <.>rem i saw woman on the bus the other day and she's had like she looks so kind of clean cut like she had this really really short hair cut and it was all bleached oh right looked just quite choice it kind of sh really short yeah not shaven though <,> one thing i hate when people say something about linguistics is with kids and they say <,,> oh yeah that belongs to me <&>15:00 not have you heard that <{><[>not not <[>yeah not laughs that's from er what's it from not bill and ted's the other one um oh is that what it's <{><[>from <[>what's it called tut oh i can't remember now um <{><[>word wayne's world <[>wayne's world yeah NOT i thought bill and ted's excellent adventure was better <&>15:20
