<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>8:12 well when i'm <.>i it's like when i went to australia my <.>mu before i went to australia my mother asked me <.>d do i want anything and i know like <.>da i won't get anything from dad and i won't ask anything from dad cos dad doesn't have any money i mean dad's like on twenty three thousand right and he's been working for twenty years <,> <{1><[1>the same job no he's forty three now he's been working there since no over twenty years <,> <{2><[2>and <.>he's <[1>word <[2>it's a long time <{><[>eh <[>and he's earning <.>t he's only earning twenty three thousand or twenty three thousand nine hundred mm <,> <.>mu with mum being semiretired and john doing all the work like <{><[>john's <[>how old is your mum my mum's about forty nine oh yeah forty nine fifty um john because he's young um <&>9:00 he gets paid <.>extremel extremely well <{><[>but like he's <.>i he is in the fifty fifty bracket but their tax is like fifty percent of your wages they are they are really heavy taxed so he may get er about twenty five thirty grand <[>yeah yeah my dad's not even on the phone <,> i can't even ring him can't can't you no <{><[>he hasn't got he hasn't even got enough money to put the phone on <[>can't afford shit tut everybody thinks oh my parents have got plenty of money oh you know and such and such everything i've everything i own i've worked for <,> <{1><[1>dad's never given me anything and and it's not because he just hasn't wanted to it's not <.>be because he hasn't been able to <{2><[2>i mean my dad still drives round in an old cortina inhales an old mark four cortina he's got a mortgage <,> and er <[1>yeah that's cool <[2>it's because he hasn't got the money is he married no he's single <&>10:00 still well i mean yeah still single after being married <,> but i mean you know i mean <,> he's he lost twenty thousand in investments through prudential when that went bust <,> that was about four years ago so that was basically his life savings that went down the tube so now he's just trying to scrimp and save <,> all he can well he's not saving anything i mean when you're on <.>that when you're on twenty three thousand a year and you've got a <.>s <.>s sixty five thousand dollar mortgage mm you don't save <{><[>anything if you want to live at the same time <[>it's like people <.>who <.>who who who are getting fourteen fourteen fifteen thousand dollars a year i mean it's what about two hundred dollars a week yeah but he's been working his butt off for twenty years that's the point that's the difference and then i mean he's ALWAYS had a job all his life and that's all he's got to show for it and then when he retires he'll get a gold watch <{><[>gold gold word <[>and he's a skilled <.>s <.>s skilled tradesman <&>11:00 as well <,> i mean he's a he's a builder <,> but i mean he's happy eh i mean like he could go out and get bigger jobs or whatever but i mean he's happy doing what he wants to do i suppose <,> but the point is i mean like er <,> yeah so i mean he hasn't got he hasn't got he's strapped for cash what's <.>y what's your mother like is she oh she's useless laughs she's got two credit cards she just uses uses different credit cards to pay off other credit cards <,> she's she owes THOUSANDS who pays for it her or <.>jo er her or roger roger roger pays for it yeah well <,> in a manner of speaking she owes a lot of money <,,><&>3 she just wastes it all eh <,,><&>3 spends it on partying mm what else <.>sh er did <.>she has she got any extra <.>career <.>cur any extra activities she does like sports or anything <&>12:00 er she's involved heaps with the community like tongan community <,> social work <,> um tut she's a j p is she yeah she does heaps bet they don't keep her busy for a long time though oh yeah it keeps HER busy is there any chance of you and your mother <.>get voc getting back together and talking nah no chance not a chance in in hell she might want to but i've said my piece and hey <&>sound of glass clinking baby baby well you never know <,> six months down the line a year from now a couple of years from now <{><[>it might have changed <[>oh that's what they all say yeah <{><[>never know <[>people don't change like that people just don't change <{><[>she's always been like that <[>word but children have a lot of power over their <.>pare er parents i mean they can hurt their <&>13:00 parents <.>rea quite easily by NOT even talking to them it hurts their parents cos they're <.>they it's like my father i mean i can give my father a hard time <,> by not talking to him <,> and i'm giving him a hard time <,> cos he he he treated me like shit so i'm treating him like shit i don't care i don't need to ring him <,> i don't need to talk to him tut well i don't ever talk to her either i mean it's my way of getting back at him <.>t i've nothing against my mum i mean i still love her <{><[>she's still my mum <[><.>i i <.>s i love my father but i've got everything against my father exhales i just er sometimes you got to walk away and er just leave yeah i mean <.>i my father is a nice enough guy but <,> i don't agree with <.>h the way he gets his money i mean he's a con artist yeah yeah i don't know and he <.>con he he he cons people and he's conned me i mean he's so he he pretends to be mister nice guy <{><[>never does anything wrong <&>14:00 <[>well <.>my my mum my mum took two grand out <.>of out of <.>m of my savings off me when i was sixteen to pay for rent when i was living there and going to school mm that's all just disappeared that all just went on mastercard blah blah blah <{><[>that was when i was sixteen and that's like that's everything i'd saved up until then i used to work ten lawn mowing jobs and i used to work all week basically i <.>used i mean i used to work oh at one stage i had twelve twelve contracts on and this was like when i was fourteen <,> and i worked every summer for about three years to save that <,> it just all went <[>tut well well i um <,> er like i get on with my mother better than my father my mother <{1><[1><,> is really nice i mean she's easy going easy to get along with um <,> but my father <,> cons people <&>15:00 out of their money <,> he treats them like shit <,> it's like he he i've <.>heard i've told you before at one stage he had seven girlfriends <,> <{2><[2>all at the same time and it <.>all it was going well for about three months <,> and then one day one of them walked in while he was had another girlfriend over there surprise visit boom caught in the act same thing happened with his other ones i mean he he he's now <.>h now he's over in australia <,> he's still playing the <.>ol the the game i mean he doesn't learn i mean he got he got bashed up by gretchen gretchen broke his finger cracked his ribs <,> poured er poured milk over the top of his head and then broke the bottle over his head <,,> and then um <[1><&>sniffs <[2>yeah i know just like on that just like on that um on <&>16:00 that er milk ad da da da <{><[>da da laughs <[>no yeah <.>sh she <.>pour poured it over his head and then broke the bottle all over his head and cracked his cracked his skull <,> and er she went to court with it and er he he fucked off to australia and the judge said right she gets everything <,> and and <.>w it was <.>da dad had bought everything i mean he'd bought the house he bought the car he bought everything he that <.>he that <.>hou house owned from the shop <,> and she just claimed the whole lot <,> because he was stupid enough to play play around i mean when he was married he was playing around inhales yeah well the point is um exhales <,> i mean the point is you got to watch your step the point is you got to <.>s yeah it's the old saying you <&>17:00 got to keep your <.>e your friends close you got to keep your enemies closer well i wouldn't even bother talking to my dad if he was like that or my mum that's why i don't talk to my father i mean i i'll <.>ke i'll ring him and i'll say hello and how ARE you <,> but i wouldn't even do that i'm i mean <.>he he's <{><[>written <[>the best way is silence yeah i mean he's written a book okay about religion <,> now he's KNOCKED christianity majorly this book knocks christianity majorly now he's gonna get fair slack from it <,> and if any of it cops on me <,> i'll cop it back on him <,> i mean i'll just say look dad i'm getting slack from YOUR book what are you gonna do <&>18:00 about it <,,> and i know what he'll say just handle it son you're a man now you can handle it is that what he will say yeah that's <{><[>what he'll say <[>for real i mean he's he's a dreamer i mean he <,> from the age of five <,> i was expected to look after myself i mean i didn't have a childhood <,> bummer not having a childhood yeah <,> voc yeah but the point is <,,><&>5 <{><[>like no the point is not <.>everyo voc i mean inhales you've obviously had a bad childhood and i mean mine wasn't that great <[>the point is mhm but i mean there are heaps of people who are heaps worse off <{1><[1>and the thing is you <.>can't you can't look back at the past and say well you <{2><[2>know what wasn't wasn't to be <[1>yeah i know <[2>yeah <.>w but you think of i mean <.>y you look back at your past and you see all this shit happening to you and <&>19:00 you think voc <,> okay i've handled it <,> cool <,> and you move on and then your shit comes back to you i mean it hits you <,> i mean if my father releases this book <,> as i think he's going to do very shortly who cares i can see some slack coming back onto me cos i happen to be the son of <,> so i don't associate with my father that's why i'm glad i don't have the same last name as him <,,><&>3 i mean he's going to have to put it under a false name but it's easy enough to track him <,,> i mean well it makes a lot of sense doesn't it really <,,><&>5 it makes more <.>s <.>s <.>s more sense than anything else so what time are you guys going shopping eight <&>20:00 tut eight oclock yeah i don't know i mean <,,> exhales life is rude but i mean in the end it's up to you no one else is gonna <,> i mean there is no one else <,> it's up to you <,> there IS nothing else one person to rely on <,> only one to rely on yourself tut at the end of the day <,,> you're the only one who can say you've had a go yep no one else can say it <,> but i mean that's part of the challenge and i mean <.>gr growing up is a challenge i mean there's people that survive it and there's people who don't it's a pain in the arse laughs i mean but okay i i'm i'm i haven't had the greatest childhood and i haven't had the <&>21:00 greatest life in the world <,> but i'm still happy to be here i'm still glad i made it <,,> i'm still glad i i'm i'm breathing <&>21:10
