<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>3:19 okay so if we went there for a week and i mean i wouldn't really want to stay in bali long much longer than a week what about you well it's pointless going to bali for just a week i mean you may as well just go to thailand oh okay then <,,> well if we go to thailand <,> now we've sort of seen most of thailand haven't <{><[>we so i mean i i sort of really want to go to burma that's my big ambition and can only spend say a week there <[>mm mm but thailand's a good base for that thailand's a good place to have a good relaxing holiday for how long say a month <&>4:00 well it doesn't need to be that long but at least a couple of WEEKS so say two weeks yeah and then you do a a trek like <{><[>on elephants or something <[>two weeks' holiday and then an elephant trek so that's three weeks really yeah and then go to burma <,> for a week okay <{><[>three <[>and then back to thailand wouldn't we just go onwards remember how being in bangladesh goes from bangkok rangoon <,> dhaka oh and you know i thought you actually had to go back out of where <{><[>you begun word <[>well er not if you can get an <.>on onward ticket <{1><[1>it's maybe something we should <{2><[2>investigate i mean cos it seems silly to go back out again <[1>mm <[2>mm yeah but if we just say plan to do that <{><[>go to go to burma and then fly to dhaka now are you sure you don't want to go to bangladesh remember how nice it was when we flew over it <[>mm it depends what season it is got to make sure it's not the rainy season <&>5:00 yeah? well you've seen what it was like yeah what time was that can you remember that was late in the year wasn't <{><[>it <[>it must have been about <,,> august september yeah cos we spent we got back here when <.>nove october or <{><[>something <[>mm we got back in october so september so that was august well that's we wouldn't be there in august no we wouldn't be there till like december <{><[>january <[>mm january's quite nice that's the summertime isn't it be hot well we'll be <{1><[1>acclimatised if we've been in thailand that <{2><[2>long but i'd it just it just looked really good along that tut that piece of beach that used to be upper burma and that i'll show you on the map where it is <,,><&>5 <&>6:00 <[1>yeah <[2>but that's a nice back rub fimo who did you get that from i found it <&>cat meows laughs mm japan korea <,,> india <,,> madyu mashar here we are <,,><&>5 see it's that piece there cox's bazar isn't <{><[>on there <[>oh <&>rest of utterance addressed to cat fluffy you don't have to get into EVERYTHING that's going on okay see there's rangoon there <,> i do you remember <{><[>that old that old <[>oh yeah yeah goes straight to dhaka yeah well do you remember that travel documentary we saw on the airline the really old <{><[>one <[>yeah i do well i wouldn't mind sort of pencilling it in just for a week anyway <,,><&>3 well <{><[>in that case i don't think we should spend so long in thailand <[>cos <&>7:00 what just say say <.>t two weeks two weeks okay <{><[>well <[>just have that as a holiday and not do a trek okay cos <{><[>we've been on <[>oh i don't know i'm so used to rushing that i yeah <{><[>well what's an extra week <[>i mean what's an extra week no leave it at three weeks okay we'll leave it at three weeks cos you can always cut it down later on but the thing is it's not it's because we're there we may as well go to it because it's not the sort of place you're gonna go ever again mm on purpose and can you fly from dhaka to bhutan yeah you <{><[>can <[>you go on druk air you can take a train or even a bus oh a train would be good be a long trip though wouldn't it yeah but richard said you can take a train from bhutan down the mountains cos see there's darjeeling mm remember that's one of those high country tea stations yes i've heard of darjeeling i've drunk it myself <&>8:00 yeah well if we're saying we'll go to bangladesh for a week <{><[>right <[>but bearing in mind don't we have to get to bhutan we have to if if we're going to go there we've got to really go there first well that that defeats this whole plan then doesn't <{><[>it <[>no because you just all we've <.>deci decided is say we went from here go from here to sydney and then fly to bhutan and then work your way BACK like from there <{><[>if you went into bhutan you could go down into india <[>mm yeah and work your way BACK to bangkok so go <.>ni <,,> WHAT why does that say pakistan there and that says pakistan there as <{><[>well <[>because this atlas is <.>ni from nineteen sixty one and when they partitioned <,,> india and pakistan that was west pakistan and that <&>9:00 was east pakistan and then they had a um quite a um bloody civil war and east pakistan succeeded and became bangladesh there was an immense cos <.>i you know what the sikhs and the um who were the other people the sikhs <,> and other people and the punjab who want who are fighting for separation like <{1><[1>at the moment the tamils see all this is still disputed <{2><[2>territory as well but that's why it's called <{3><[3>pakistan <[1>mm <[2>mm <[3>but how does THAT mean well that's actual pakistan and that's bangladesh mm mm <{><[>word <[>well see ceylon's still called ceylon and it's not called that anymore it's called sri lanka yeah <,> i know that okay so what you're saying is fly to bhutan yeah like go and then come down into india maybe just a little bit of india <{><[>then head back and then through pakistan go to burma then down to <.>hai thailand for a good rest <[>yeah <&>10:00 yeah and then fly from thailand to wouldn't necessarily do that you could <{1><[1>even coughs you could even go across to like hong kong and japan and go to england that way round the top through vancouver and <{2><[2>things see you don't have to go that way <[1>right <[2>mm oh yeah <,> yes you do i always go that way yes that's not the <{1><[1>point there's nothing to stop you going this other way <{2><[2>just because <.>y everyone goes to england the same old way <[1>laughs <[2>laughs no i can't go the other way laughs <,> but that would be a good way of doing it <,> cos <.>y you could just fly straight into either dhaka or um calcutta tut then go up to bhutan from <{><[>there <[>yeah <,> oh yeah calcutta <,,><&>4 yeah i just don't know that word <&>11:00 yeah but that's supposed to be like really hard travelling there no it's not well that's what pete and frances said well sarah did it did she yeah was that when she got lost with the fletchers yeah <,,><&>3 what do you reckon they're called um <,> well i don't know i i don't really know if that's arisli that's bihari bihar and <{1><[1>that's gujarat over there that part and then that's uttar pradesh this piece at the top <{2><[2>then like <[1>bihar <[2>isn't that the piece you can't go into well where where's amritsar <&>pronounced armitstar see there's delhi um the temple is up the <{><[>top <[>new delhi yeah you can't that's where the sikh temple is the golden temple <,,><&>3 thing is we're so close to china yeah <&>12:00 couldn't we go into china as well yeah but it's difficult access you've got to remember that's <{><[>in the higher mountains yeah <[>oh that's mountains laughs i mean the himalaya you're right in the himilayas mm and it's not like you can just walk down the other side no you could probably go to tibet like you're really close to tibet mm see there's i don't know how you say it voc <{><[>l h <[>lashkar <{><[>lashkar <[>lashkar that's the capital of tibet and and i mean if you're going to go up to bhutan and you're gonna be up in the higher mountains well it might be easier to say like go to tibet you'd have to take some hideous yak journey no you'd just fly and damn the consequences it'd probably cost about three hundred dollars u s i'd imagine cos that would cost five hundred u s um return from bangkok to <{><[><.>bhut er to thimphu <[>mm oh i guess we can't do everything no you can't do everything <,> but i mean when you're up there you should check it out <&>13:00 <,,> <{><[>no you can do too much on these <.>trek on these journeys <[>voc mm <,> but that's the thing though because you've got such limited you see how big burma is mm and i mean it's even bigger than say thailand but remember in the guide book because everyone's like limited to seven days and they've worked out several routes i mean <{><[>you've got to you can't go everywhere so you'd want to say just go to mandalay <,,> and um where the that pagoda is the leaning pagoda or whatever it is <,,> it's quite famous <[>yeah mm that's right tut but you'd want to stay away from this area here where those kharan tribes are remember when <{><[>we were word <[>the bandits yeah mm <,,><&>5 see you could go um once you come down from <&>14:00 bhutan say you went there first it <.>d it doesn't really change anything because even if you were coming this way <,> you know you're still in the same area <,,><&>3 calcutta's not very nice apparently <,,><&>6 it depends still have to get some reports richard went all the way down to there did he madras yeah he went all the way down there with some one of the v s o people what by train yeah i think it was by train <,> but he he wasn't particularly impressed be probably be like one of those greek trains except worse you know you've seen the pictures about ten million people mm trying to get on there but someone told me mel and duke told me that the train was really good from bangkok to chiang mai so was the bus <,,> <&>15:00 well that depends doesn't it on what you prefer i like buses <,> now where <.>do what does <.>y map does that connect with well that would be on the that <{><[>map there <[>here we are because there's <{><[>vietnam <[>this is an area that i'm interested in going into as well well you can go into vietnam now can you go into you can go <{><[>into laos <,> see i wouldn't mind going to angkor wat you know that big <[>the mm big thing there and that's <.>a across in east thailand it's probably not on this map but you can go there now you must be able to cross through these borders <{><[>down here <[>yeah well it's like most er those countries there there's a certain entry and exit point <{><[>see <[>mm that you have to take yeah could easily find out but the thing is once you get in there <,> see <&>16:00 see how that's called voc indo china yeah siam and that's called kok chin china <{><[>that southern part yeah <[>indo china interesting isn't it <,,><&>3 cos hanoi's called ho chi minh city now isn't it so that's see there's china there mm but there's nothing there i mean if i wouldn't mind going to china either but that could be a separate trip yeah i mean <{><[>it's such a big place but sort of opened up to independent travellers now <,> let's just have a look at that cos the other option is to you know like if you go into bhutan is not to even fly to london is to take the trans siberian railway <[>laughs no we haven't got time haven't we not really we don't want to spend a lot of time travelling do we <&>17:03
