NO CERTAINLY <{><[>not and he RAN out of the shop <,,> <[>coughs <[>laughs <{><[>it was <.>very <[>coughs did he have to go into china to do it <{><[><.>oh <[>no <.>they they were inside the chinese <{><[>border <[>border i think <{><[>yeah <,> and there was lots of references to <.>gengh genghis khan and stuff in it <[>yeah mm yeah they were sort of obsessed by that and apples laughs that and apples i guess <.>it cos it was sort of just drawing <.>the and they were sort of <.>compari i think the whole thing was about just cultures having to LEAVE their own voc thing to go off and sort of live a decent life and cos there was this russian that was having to live in china cos he couldn't feed himself at home in russia <.>and <.>and and they were <.>having they had to live in china basically as well and couldn't live <.>any um <{><[>word <[>were they riding around on horses <{><[>and things <[>yes yeah <[>oh yeah they had some great horse chases most definitely <&>5:00 yeah <{><[>oh but <.>they <.>they they were surviving quite well they <.>ma they had quite a lot of money they weren't poor <[>yeah it was really weird <[>word mm yeah when <.>d <.>i that's one thing i didn't understand they just had these sort of about twenty cows and a few horses and a few goats <.>and he goes into town he's just got WADS <{><[>and <.>gets he nearly gets mugged <[>oh that'd be cos <.>his his wife made pelts and things for <{><[>a living <[>oh did she oh <{><[>right <[>they would have got money from that mm it was good yeah you wouldn't want to see to many of these long drawn out you know <{><[>arty farty boring things <[>mm mm yeah it's good to go and see one little movie though cos you don't get <{><[>to see word <[>a bit of culture yeah we're going to go to <.>the to like water for chocolate oh <{><[>right <[>on um tomorrow night we've got our money on that that'll be coming back hopefully so <{><[>that's why we didn't go to that <[>oh i probably think it was virtually sold out we're RIGHT up in the back <{1><[1>corner <{2><[2>laughs and <.>s at the oak last night there was HEAPS of seats left they only filled the middle aisle <{3><[3>you know the middle row <[1>oh <[2>laughs <[3>mm <[3>that'd be all right oh cos i thought <.>they everyone reckoned that all the night ones would most DEFINITELY be sold out sort of thing <&>6:00 yeah quite a few of them WERE according to liz but tut when we went to have a look on the board they have a little board out at the front there it only had <.>l like two or three sold out stickers on them mm oh right but i don't know if <{><[>word <[>i think it's sort of panic mongering on behalf of the management to make sure they get a good crowd <{1><[1>to say oh we WILL be <.>sel sold out by <{2><[2>one oclock <[1>yeah that's true <[2>cos they do that in dunedin as well and they give <.>them the films these INCREDIBLY good write ups <.>these <{1><[1>you see a whole page thing saying that's it's the BEST film ever in the universe and everyone goes oh <{2><[2>yeah i was crazily disappointed and sometimes even if they're a good film you're so disappointed cos you're built up to think it's GREAT <{3><[3>you know and go along and sit there and you know well this is all right but it's not until you go out sort of feeling let down it's really stupid <[1>every single film yeah <[2>mm mm laughs <[3>and they virtually tell you the whole plot mm mm we just used to get pissed off in the end yeah glen's film showed before bad lieutenant and he had to get up and make a speech in front <.>of did he yeah in front of this packed house i would like to thank blah de blah de blah clears throat <{><[>i thought he didn't turn up to it <[>there was <.>a yeah he'd been and <{><[>made sure <&>7:00 <[>he did but he didn't tell anyone that it was on or that <.>he he was showing before it or anything oh i see sneaky one he is <.>have <.>di was there short before the one last night yeah it was called the <drawls>mill</drawls> was it any good <.>n nah i didn't think so <.>w was it a new zealand or an <{><[><.>australian <[>i <.>don't er no <.>i it was some european <,> film it was about five minutes long it was animated it had reasonably good animation tut um tut it was done sort of like er you know how you voc tip iron filings iron <{><[>filings <[>oh yeah the <.>magn oh <{><[>word <[>yeah sort of like that that's the sort of <{1><[1>effect it was and it all sort of moved around and stuff and it had different coloured things <{2><[2>going in and out of it <[1>oh yeah <[2>oh yeah oh right it was all that sort of effect <,> and um tut it would have taken a hell of a lot of <{1><[1>work to animate but <,> it was very <,> arty <{2><[2>laughs there was <.>n no real story <{3><[3>to it it was just sort of CHANGING all the time you know it was <[1>tut <&>8:00 <[2>laughs <[3>that's a mm mm basically there was this little girl and she <.>l er does all these things and there's a little insect um they <.>were there were two themes to it this girl and this insect and um tut then <.>they <.>a and all these different things happen like she jumps into a beehive and this and then this all these bees pick her up and take her off out into laughs you know er on top of this hill and she starts getting draped in this wild long hair <{1><[1>word giant hair and you sort of get a macro view of it and there's this sort of inhales an orange sitting on top of a stick with all of this hair hanging down <{2><[2>off it and <[1>far out <[2>and this is all done in iron filings yeah yeah wow that's incredible that <{><[>sort of attention to detail <[>it was um it was really <{1><[1>quite good <.>aman animation <{2><[2>it was incredible but <[1><.>but <[2>but you're just sometimes you're sitting there thinking you know you look at it and you go well this is so much work gone <&>9:00 into this <.>we'll i mean and it is a film so it should really have a decent story i mean and if <{1><[1>they want it to be art fair enough well well that's different but but er it doesn't normally have any cos <.>we there was the same one before <{2><[2>our film today there was this animation where you find drawings <{3><[3>done it was a just it was called the dark side of the city or something or <{4><[4>the secrets</[4> of the city <[1>yeah <[2>mm <[3><&>drinks <[4>secrets yeah and it just had all these sort of depressing images of city life all quite <.>scar scarcely drawn with just sort of <{><[>a few colours <[>it was a bit of a cheat like it was a bit like wings of desire the way it sort of went into windows and things and you know into people's lives and with music <.>back backing it and then coming back out the window or finding sort of little connections like smoke or something to follow into another right <{><[>yeah <[>sort of little story but it got quite boring and <{><[>i don't know <[>yeah that's the sort of thing that this was and cos if i mean with animation you got so much possibility and it's all just usually um it's more of a craft it seems than an art <.>or <.>or or something <{><[>it's not quite mm <[>yeah well when those sort of voc films first came out they were quite interesting mm but now everybody's doing that <{><[>sort of thing <[>mm mm mm <&>10:00 <{><[>just <[>now aren't they doing that sort of animation following one thing and <,> you never know what's gonna happen next sure and then that's probably what it's all about but there's they're just meaningless they're like a kaleidoscope <{1><[1>which is just turning round and around and around you never know what's gonna happen next but it's all sort of fairly <{2><[2>mundane pretty but <[1>cope yeah <[2>sort of hey what amazing picture can i draw next <{1><[1>you know but i guess to the to the artists themselves they probably are do have meaning i guess we <{2><[2>just don't understand them <{3><[3>laughs <[1>yeah <[2>word <[3>these animators they must spend so <{><[>long <[>fuck yeah mm amazing eh i reckon <,> especially if they're not using you know er cheap <{><[>south american labour <[>videos and <{><[>laughs <[>yeah which is what america do and stuff they get all their like <{1><[1>simpsons even all their walt disney stuff they ship off and get it done in in china and things like <{2><[2>that <[1>simpsons that's right <[2>yeah do they <{><[>yeah <[>lots done in korea <{><[>and japan <[>all the basic animation yeah <.>all <{1><[1>all the animation done for it and they they storyboard <{2><[2>it and devise it in america yeah cos even new zealand's doing it now because there's not enough there's so many cartoons being done that that christchurch and in auckland do <&>11:00 walt disney um cartoons <{3><[3>as well yeah just the basic you know horrible little um what are they called the young muppets and things like that <[1>mm <[2>they sort of do the main frames and the in between stuff's painted and <[3>do they really oh i didn't know that oh right the baby muppets and all those cartoons they <{><[><.>s yeah as well yeah yeah <[>we do it? <,> for america thanks to the employment contracts <{><[>act <[>contracts <{1><[1>act yeah we got animators <&>pronounced anarators <{2><[2>working for say two dollars an hour drawing donald duck's baby <[1>laughs <[2>word laughs <&>drinks mm what a nice sunny spot here yeah it is in the afternoons we yesterday went and did taping at madeleine's we went to dinner and then stayed there and did taping and and just i just lay down in the sun on madeleine's sort of kitcheny loungey floor there and just blasted out the stereo it's really nice seeing we miss the <{><[>sun <[>yesterday oh or the day before yesterday <{><[>yeah <[>she went to todd and brenda's <{><[>didn't she <[>yeah <{1><[1>that that night and then we stayed the night <{2><[2>at madeleine's <[1>yeah the night before we stayed <[2>oh right right did some taping it's good sitting on the verandah in the sun <,> yeah mm it's better inside where it's sheltered i feel <&>12:00 it's been quite nice weather <{><[>mm word <[>it's just bizarre eh it's freaky <{><[>it's just not even a winter really i mean it's tropical <[>really nice walking around laughs well laughs i've still got my big thick <{><[>socks on <[>laughs <{><[>and your slippers <[>mm i noticed them they look very warm are they angora or wool um i don't know what type of wool they are they're just some <.>they're i got them in turkey oh right neat they made really good it gets really cold in turkey <{><[>so they make really good socks laughs <[>yeah laughs sure do they're that cold yeah so we thought we're gonna have some drinks here on <,> tut um <&>drinks tut not next week or the week after the week after that in three weekends' time inhales <{><[>we'll pencil it in our diary <[>we'll <.>se pencil it in yeah thought we'd have some beers and snacky bits <{><[>word in the afternoon <[>oh yeah that sounds good oh an afternoon thing <{><[>word <[>mm cos this this is quite nice in the afternoons <{1><[1>from <{2><[2>the sun comes in and <[1>mm <[2>gonna say utilise the warmth <&>13:00 otherwise you know it's all small dark and dank and yeah dank <{><[>nice word dank <[>word we thought we'd only mm get a half a dozen people say because we haven't got a very big <{><[>place laughs <[>no space laughs laughs yeah and um crack open some home brews and mm sounds nice yeah todd gave us his kit so we should really and <.>ge <{><[>get round <.>to <[>get down to some to doing something something with it mm who did todd cos he can't brew in their place cos it's <{><[>too small it's a spare room really cramped in <[>no room oh right word hasn't got bottles though has he no it's terrible one <.>gr great tragedy about leaving the city is that you're going to give away your <{><[>home brew bottles it's a tragedy cos we were getting up a bit of a collection eh <&>13:48 <[>all your empty bottles
