<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>1:00 but there was this voc really good um <,,> singing group from the philippines <{><[>they're a family <[>from the philippines yeah really they're a <.>fam they're <.>mal maltese family or something yeah really massive christian? yeah they were um <,,><&>3 they looked REALLY YOUNG but then they were all talking <.>about you know saying oh yeah i've got four kids <.>and laughs really and <.>th that was the lady <{><[>and she looked <.>at she looked about twenty <.>t or something to me laughs <[>mm mm they were really good oh yeah oh we're um but i hated the food i mean <.>i was it all chinese food no the actual food was all right but how they <.>s served the food you <{><[>know <[>yeah yeah yeah oh yeah i'd rather just eat it at one time oh well our small group um we've been um really good lately it's been really good fun what do you mean um because we've been <.>g cos we've <.>known <&>2:00 like we've been together for a year and a half now but it's only like been the last maybe month that it's sort of been getting <.>more um i guess it's <.>j we've just been taking things more seriously and that and <{><[><.>just <[>what things just because small group <.>f for a long time was just more of a <,> social time together rather than talking about anything christian or <.>s as a support group or anything you know as any real function like that it was just like a get together and muck around and smoke cigars and do stupid things and that's <.>all all we did smoke cigars yeah we smoked cigars laughs not all the time they're really disgusting um but um tut like um this is <.>p um i reckon that's been um sort of pushed along because <.>like by leon and dean broke up with their girlfriends in the same week <.>so OH is leon in your small group as well yeah so we all had very serious things to talk about does leon <.>go <,> <{><[>out <.>t er <[>well he went out with jackie jackie that goes to our church you know jenny that always calls me gerald you know that one that we <.>saw and she works in the <&>name of hotel we saw her <{><[>in town that time <&>3:00 <[>oh that nice one yeah she's nice she's a bit dizzy though eh um <{><[><.>but <[>OH that's a bit naughty yeah but um so they <.>b broke up and i felt really sorry for leon we all felt really sorry for leon because jackie was his dream girl that he's been dreaming of every night for the last two years <{1><[1><.>and <,> and he finally got his dream girl and about three weeks later she dumps him so that was not very nice <.>and <{2><[2>um <[1>laughs <[2>they just went out for three weeks about three weeks or a month or something like that really short eh and um <.>and and he was really upset what kind of going outs are they <.>well i really don't understand i don't understand either um voc <,> jackie's just one of these girls that's really stupid really quite annoying cos she just can turn off her feelings just clicks fingers like that and you know it seems so strange <.>that you know that they were really close and they could talk to each other about anything <{><[>and then <[>REALLY CLOSE? in three weeks you get <{><[>really close <,> oh sure <[>they were <.>really no they'd <.>b they'd been hanging out <.>ag for ages <{1><[1>you know like <&>4:00 courting for about a year <{2><[2>or <.>s word courting you know <.>and and always you know a <.>really you know <.>good you know good relationship and all that then they went out and then that sort of going out ruined it and um i <.>g something like that and then she's just sort of turned herself off to him and um and now <.>they now he can't even talk to her about anything eh and she just <.>like quite mean really and dean stopped going out with angie which i think's really good <[1>oh yeah <[2>laughs COURTING? OH YEAH laughs angie yeah angie that other one who's jackie's friend they're <.>y oh yeah they're not really friends any more but they used to be really good friends yeah they all came to our camp one time yeah yeah yeah mm um so he stopped going out with angie which was really good <{><[>and um <[>why what's the problem with angie do all of them go to <&>name of group or something nah they've got nothing to do with <&>name of group oh well how did they all meet up um well like <.>there's there's that group there's like dean and angie and jackie and leon and i don't know if you know philip but this <&>5:00 other guy philip they all went to <&>name of group for about five years together and <.>th those five always used to hang out like real heaps and <.>they and <.>they you know like they've all gone out with each other you know like <{1><[1>angie's gone out with <.>d they've all they <{2><[2>truly <.>ha all have eh like they've <.>always they've <.>always you know cos it's <.>always jackie went out with <,> dean for <.>about <[1>OH <.>Y <[2>tut oh stupid kids <{><[>i'm cold laughs <[>a little while and um philip went out with angie for ages and then they sort of swapped about three years later and um <.>and but they were all really good friends that's how they all know each other and i only sort of know them now because of when i did <&>name of group with dean and <{1><[1>all <.>that but <.>i knew them all before that cos diane was friends with them but you know i've only just sort of become friends with <{2><[2>them <[1><&>sighs <[2><.>how where does you small group come from i mean like how did you <{><[>make it up yeah <[>start it um well it was <{><[>those four <.>i <.>i <[>word not <,,> face into that mike voc i had <.>really i had nothing to do with it eh cos those <.>f those four have all been friends for years but <.>i i <&>6:00 only really knew dean but they just <.>asked oh i knew phil but just <.>like like <.>s <.>c like the way i know anyone and i knew leon but not very well <{><[>not you <.>know <[>which one is phil <.>i i don't think you've ever seen him eh but um and i knew tim but <.>not er well at all either and then they just asked me <.>to <.>they they were starting up a small group they asked me to join it and i said oh yeah sounds like a good idea and it's sort of <.>basic basically gone from strength to strength it's been really good eh <{><[><.>and <[>oh strength to strength woo you're getting pretty good shut up and um and it's been getting better but it's not like a <.>s it's not like <.>i i'm getting heaps closer with them but it's not like i <.>still it's not like i really rely on them or anything like that well who DO you rely on oh no one at the moment laughs yeah but um no one for the last five years nah i <.>don't no one for the last year but um tut voc um yeah we went out on um friday night <.>cos <{><[>um <[>to where cos phil he works at um the <&>name of high <&>7:00 school rec centre mm um he runs that place on a friday night so um um four of us not tim but the rest of us all went there and played um basketball and that and played squash at the rec centre and that and it was really cool and then we went to this um other girl's house jan's house and um and had a feed at her house and watched <{><[>t v <[>had a food had some food <{><[>at her house um and hung out with her for a while and that was really good and er she's got a real nice house she was a real <.>down nice down to earth girl even though she's really rich and um <[>oh good laughs not as rich as angie though laughs but she's er still quite rich and her dad he's a economist and he looks like SUCH a GEEK eh laughs he's like a real tall skinny little adolf <.>hitler <&>pronounced as hotler hitler moustache real geeky glasses voc black grotty hair and that looks like a real nerdy economist sort of and that and um he <.>was he was real funny and um and ate all their food <.>and voc <&>8:00 and we drank all their drink laughs or did er drink all their drink no we drunked <{><[>anyway <.>we anyway we got drunk <[>drunk yeah yeah laughs mm is that recording yeah i think yeah it is tut okay and um it better <.>bl blimmin <{><[>be <[>voc i'll say <.>and um voc and um yeah and <.>then then we hung out it was really good and we went and voc our group was meant to sing a song at karaoke last night cos we were all going to come except carl couldn't come cos he was working but the <.>r the rest of us were going to sing a song except dean didn't voc want to come in the end because he got depressed <.>because because angie's gone off to spend the weekend at neil's house and neil is angie's ex boyfriend who they went out with for ages but then angie dropped neil to go out with her cousin laughs <.>who er but her cousin's in england so they broke up but um neil was <.>in living in christchurch at the moment neil <{><[>went to live in christchurch because he's still in love with angie and had to <.>g try and get over her so he went away but now <.>h he's back for a little while and um so angie's probably going to be going out with him again and so dean was depressed <,> so he didn't come out and phil's got a cool leather jacket cos he's bought <&>pronounced brought a motorbike so he's got a cool leather jacket a real fonzie choice one so i'm going to wear it he's going to give it to me it's our jacket <[>oh my goodness <&>9:00 oh <{><[>yeah <[>it's real choice it's like a real you know <{><[>cool dude fonzie <[>yeah you look like fonzie laughs well and it's real choice <{1><[1>and um <,> i can't wait to wear it it looks really cool man cos i tried it on the other night <{2><[2>word yeah that's been really good and did i tell you oh yeah i told you we've got chickens at our house now we went rabbit shooting yesterday morning too got up at um <{3><[3>six thirty <[1>laughs <[2><&>sighs loudly <[3>WHAT oh that's disgusting no i'll explain to you why it's not disgusting <{1><[1>but <.>we er it is NOT what about the <.>poor the <.>poor cos er we were <.>sh um at this golf course shooting at this golf course and what about the poor farmer <.>who who no one comes to his golf course because rabbit holes <{2><[2><.>dig rabbit holes <&>10:00 <[1>it is so <[2>oh POOR OLD FARMER well he's the one <{><[>that's got to eat no food for dinner because no one comes to his golf club and because there's rabbit holes all over his greens and everything like that so we're doing him a favour even though we didn't even kill any we only saw about <&>phone rings in background <.>f four and they ran away leave it someone else will get it and um and um but where we were shooting word was quite dumb and um then we bought the four chickens on the way home from the there and we had <.>to i had to look after four chickens in the back seat with me <[>BOO HOO laughs oh yum i'll say did they peck you no they were in boxes but they <{><[>were sticking their claws out through holes in the boxes and stuff like they're real docile as eh it was really they're real dumb they can't fly they just fall off their perch because they try and fly their wings are so weak they just fall off
