<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>6:48 so how long did it take to get the stitches out of your mouth about <,> a minute it was <.>really it was amazing because this one the gum had grown over and i thought he was going to have to cut the gum <{1><[1>again to get it out you know i was sort <&>7:00 of thinking <{2><[2>oh no but he um all he did was just um <,> pushed against it and the stitch showed up so <{3><[3>he could cut it so <.>it it didn't hurt i thought it might have hurt when they pulled it out <{4><[4>but it didn't so that's all right <{5><[5>yeah <[1>oh <[2>laughs <[3>oh <[4>mm <[5>did none of them hurt when they pulled them out no i've never had stitches before <{><[>either <[>yeah I haven't and it's the first stitches i've ever had but no <.>the i <.>didn't didn't feel them coming out so that was good and <{><[>um i went around to pay and i said oh how much is it and she said oh it's nothing <[>sniffs laughs oh laughs oh good so that was quite nice <.>y <{><[>cos <[>must have been all part of it yeah of <.>the of the total cost mm yeah but he said to <.>me he said oh he said go back and get a check up in six months time <,> and um he said if i wait until after june next year he'll be back in england <{1><[1>cos he's only over here for about a year cos his wife's from new zealand and they came over to see her family <{2><[2>and then they're going <&>8:00 back and i said oh well i'll be in um aussie by then so i'll leave it for a year then <[1>mm <[2>mhm mm but um i'll make sure i'll get them checked again before i go to thailand and <.>so oh good that's good you know the swelling's gone down <{><[>on them quite a bit <[>mm yeah it's just um yeah it's just um yeah i can <.>al i can feel all my jaw now there's just a wee lump just there mm and um it's still swollen inside so that when i chew i sometimes hit my gum <{1><[1>er <.>my that's why it's been making it sore there's stuff just been cutting the gum a wee bit so he <{2><[2>said to keep gargling some salt and er salty water and that'll sort that one out <[1>mm <[2>mm oh good that's good but yeah it's amazing cos i haven't had any problems with it and <.>people you hear all these horror stories and people say oh no you're getting your wisdom teeth out but <{1><[1>it's been fine <{2><[2>so <[1>mm <[2>oh good yeah nobody's touching mine laughs <,,> voc <{><[>yeah <[>they still haven't really poked their heads out one of them has oh no two of them <,,> two have come through two top <&>9:00 <{><[>ones and the two bottom ones are still hiding <[>mm but i had three through and it was only this one that wasn't through mm <{1><[1>word but that would have been the <.>tr the one they had the trouble getting <{2><[2>out <[1>word sore <[2>yeah mm but still i can forget about them now mm that's good mm how much did it cost to get your teeth out a hundred and seventy five word <{><[>money <[>that's not too bad yeah cos i was sort of thinking oh a thousand yeah twelve hundred <{><[>i was thinking oh no my savings <[>laughs yeah and um but cos <.>i i'd told him <.>before before he'd even said that i needed my teeth out i told him that i was going to college next year <{><[><.>and and going to thailand cos he goes to my old church <[>mm oh yeah and he said oh he says what are you doing and he was asking me all about it and then when he said oh he needed to take them all out he looked at me and he says how about a hundred and seventy and <{><[>i nearly fell out of the chair laughs <[>laughs mm <{><[>brilliant <[>so he says oh we can <.>do he says i'll give you a bit of a discount how's that sound laughs excellent so um yeah i <.>think i mean it was a wee bit <&>10:00 cheaper because i didn't have a general cos they're about seven hundred <{><[>or six or seven hundred or something for the general <[>mm crikey but it was still heaps cheaper then what it mm would normally have been so that was really good and <.>i cos i mean an hour or whatever it was was such a long time and they charge you for it yeah so that was REALLY good <.>i <{><[>i just thought maybe five hundred they would have charged <[>yeah yeah well <{1><[1><.>i yeah i <.>was i <.>was i was expecting about a thousand <{2><[2>when he said four teeth <{3><[3>so that was good <[1>voc <[2>yeah <[3>yeah oh excellent mm okay mm so have you heard any more about thailand or from anybody over there NO and <.>i um cos i've written <,> <.>three <,> three letters and i haven't heard back from anyone and i've sent over some money <,> about six weeks ago it didn't get banked and didn't get banked and i hadn't <{><[>heard from them <[><&>sighs tut and cos they said just to send a personal cheque yeah and it um hadn't been banked and so i thought oh has it got lost in the mail or <{1><[1>maybe <&>11:00 THEY haven't been able to bank it <{2><[2>cos it's a new zealand cheque cos new zealand currency isn't accepted in a lot of places <[1>mm <[2>mm right so i thought oh maybe they've had problems with it but i went to the bank today to do something and my balance <.>was in my account was the same as what i expected it to be so it's obviously been <{><[>drawn out now so they must <.>have um must have banked it in the last couple of weeks <[>oh i see i mean i didn't know you could do that send um you know normal new zealand cheques overseas yeah well cos i didn't think so cos in <.>th like when i send stuff to aussie i always send a bank cheque mm so i wrote over to them and said look what's the best way mm for me to send money to you because i didn't know whether to send u s word u s <{><[>dollars word <.>or or what to do and they just said oh just send us a personal cheque so <[>mm mm cos we did one um <.>with with bookkeeping we had to send one overseas somewhere and they just asked you know new zealand dollars make your cheque out to blah blah blah to wherever mm and if you're sending australian send blah blah blah amount and so we took it as just as <.>in as <&>12:00 a um you know just to write out a cheque straight to them instead of a bank cheque and um it hasn't been CASHED and it's been about three or four months yeah and i don't know whether or not it was <.>a acceptable or anything we've never heard back yeah and it's just mucking up all the bookkeeping each month i know so um but i don't know what's happened mm i do plenty of bank cheques from canada <,> mm i'm waiting to hear back from aussie too because i um you know how they said they'd <.>send they'd write to me at the end of the year and so i thought oh i'll probably hear something in october november <,> and then i suddenly twigged the other day that i'm going to be flying over in the last couple of days of the school holidays so the <.>p planes will be booked up <{><[>word <[>when's that january <{><[>february <[>mm the first week of february voc and so i thought well all the planes will be booked up really early so <.>i i wrote a letter last week over to aussie to say can <.>they i mean even if they can't send me anything else <&>13:00 can they at least send me over the dates <{><[>so that i can book cos i know i've been accepted <[>mm mm yeah and um i said cos i want to book before all the um things get booked out cos i don't want to go like a week early <{1><[1>or something like that <{2><[2>cos i'd sort of rather spend that time with dad <[1>no <[2>yeah mm and um so maybe so hopefully i'll hear back from them in <.>a a couple of weeks mm and <.>then cos once i've heard back from them i can write over to perth and see if that work mm word um are you excited about going over yeah <.>it's it's starting to feel close now yeah cos i've written my <.>support have i shown you my support letter no i'll have to show you it yep i've written that out and i'm <.>just i'm going to take it down <.>and cos i've got to talk to dad about it when i go home next week have you told him <{><[>have you told him yet word <[>i told them when i said i was first going to college <{1><[1>but that was before mum got sick <{2><[2>i haven't talked to them about it since then <[1>mm <[2>oh yeah mm um and so i don't know whether he's remembered or <{><[>not so i've GOT to talk <&>14:00 him about it this week because i'm sending out the letters <,> sometime in the next couple of weeks so that people have got time to think about it and write back <[>mm mm before the end of the year <,,> but i'm sending some of them to aunties and uncles so i can't send it to them until i've <{1><[1>talked to dad because otherwise in case he's forgotten and they say oh such and such about me going off and stuff he doesn't remember i <{2><[2>can't do that <[1>oh right <[2>it would be pretty awkward yeah so i'll have to talk to him about it this week so hopefully if that goes all right mum will cope mhm but um word so yeah so i'll talk to him about that and i'll come back and i'll type it up cos i've just done a rough copy mm and i'll put <.>a get a photo and put on it and <.>julie there's a place down in the hutt that julie found <,> <.>a <.>a and it does photocopying and you can get about fifty copies for ten dollars or five dollars <{><[>or something <[>oh yeah so i'll get probably a hundred copies done yeah and um post some of them out and dish a few out but i'll <.>wait i won't send the ones to <.>p <&>15:00 people at church until after the team come back from india mhm cos i don't want to distract people from that yeah so there's that so i'm sort <.>of i've started doing that now <{><[>and um i'm going to go this week and get a reference from pete at work because of him leaving <[>mm yeah and because when melvin starts pete's leaving pete um <,> operations oh <{><[>of course oscarrow <[>oscarrow yeah and so <.>when cos when the new guy starts he won't know me so i can't get a reference <{><[>from him so i'll get a reference from pete now <[>oh yeah mm and so things are just starting <.>to <{><[>mm starting to happen now <[>mm i talked to um sarah last week and i said oh how do you go about arranging for people to look after <.>like people to look after like my finances <{1><[1>while i'm away i says okay <.>i've i've been praying about it and i've got these people's <{2><[2>names but i mean can you go up to them and say well look can i see your chequebook can i see what your bookkeeping's <{3><[3>like you know you sort <.>of you don't <{4><[4>really know <.>y how to go about <&>16:00 that and she said oh who is it and i told her and she said oh cos they came up and said to <.>me cos they're in the <.>m in the <.>m missions group <[1>mm <[2>yeah <[3>yeah <[4>word laughs mm and they came up and said that if there's anything financial to do with it they'd like to be <.>up to be involved in that oh good cos sharon used to <.>be um work in a bank as an accountant OH EXCELLENT and i thought <{><[>oh well what a revelation so that was really cool so i hadn't asked them yet <[>word laughs mm but um i'll ask them sometime in the next couple of weeks to see if they'll do that oh <{><[>good <[>so yeah so it's starting to feel real now yeah but tut wow <{><[>pretty exciting it's two years isn't it <[>yeah yeah mm voc i don't know if i'll get back i'd like to get back at the christmas in the middle but it depends on voc if i'm working whether i can get time off work mm so if <.>i'm if i can't what i might do say to dad well you come over and see me <{1><[1>and um cos it's no more expensive for me to come <&>17:00 over here than it is for <{2><[2>him to word <[1>yeah <[2>so whereabouts are you going to stay you'll get a hostel or a room <{><[>there or something <[>word boarding with a family yeah you <.>know you know my friends up in auckland yeah <{><[>word <[>a j and ivan yeah yeah <.>they're <.>they're they're from perth oh good and so they're going over to find me some family to stay with and i'll just board i mean i may go flatting later but it's <{1><[1>so much cheaper <{2><[2>boarding and it's going to be a lot more of a supportive <{3><[3>atmosphere especially sort of like being in a new <{4><[4>country and stuff <[1>mm <[2>yeah <[3>mm mm <[4>yeah oh <{><[>good <[>and <.>with with mum and word it'd be really good to have <{1><[1>somebody <.>that just to be in a family for a while <{2><[2>word <[1>mm <,> mm <[2>so they haven't actually found you a family yet <{><[>they're <.>still <[>no i got a letter from a j it was actually REALLY sad i got the letter a couple of days ago and she's had a nervous breakdown voc who? a j a j yeah and that's jo's husband isn't it no that's p j P J <,> sorry laughs i <.>just <.>i <.>a a j as in a j and ivan in auckland oh right <{><[>i see <[>yeah and she's gone on back to aussie to stay with her mum and she's been over there for six weeks mm and she'll be there for another <.>m month cos a month until <{1><[1>she gets herself right <{2><[2>again <&>18:00 so i thought oh no of all people <[1>mm <[2>tut oh yeah i NEVER thought that <{1><[1>she'd sort of sort of get to that <{2><[2>but she's just been too pressured <{3><[3>and doing too much tut <.>she and um <[1>tut <[2>just a bit much <[3>yeah mm so she's over staying with her mum but she said in her letter that she'll be seeing <.>p people to ask about accommodation for me this month some time mm <{><[>oh good <[>so she's <.>still i mean she's still got that in mind <{1><[1>i thought oh no tut i'll have to write a big long letter <{2><[2>next week <,,> yeah mm it's <{3><[3>really sad <[1>oh good <[2>oh <,,> voc <[3>yeah so poor old ivan both laugh he's looking after himself and i can't imagine <.>him mind you he doesn't know one end of the kitchen from the other <{><[>laughs <[>laughs oh well he'd be learning pretty quickly wouldn't he laughs they did have some boarders for a wee while so they might be looking after him <{><[>laughs <[>yeah laughs oh <{><[>dear <[>voc mm OH and um did i tell you jude's got married JUDE yeah when did that happen <&>19:00 last week <.>she she met a guy at church camp which was um two months ago they got engaged the week before last and they got married last <{><[>week <[>voc OH MY GOODNESS what's he like oh i've only met him once i don't know him mm at all <.>but THAT'S AMAZING cos voc last time she was up here <.>wa she wasn't going out with anybody <{><[>was she when <.>i when i spoke to her <[>no no no and like it's sort <.>of it's really sad because i think she's made a really big mistake <,> um because <.>th like they don't know each other they've <.>only they only met two months ago <{><[>they don't know each other AT ALL hardly <[>tut far out word and i think she's getting married because she wants ursula back yeah and <.>sh and she <{><[>said she'd been saying for a while i <.>want that she wants her back before christmas <[>oh oh and i suspect that the only way she'd be able to get her back through the courts is by being in a stable <{><[>family <[>tut yeah so i <.>d i mean i don't know <{><[>but i <.>just <[>mm tut oh it's awful but i mean at least it's a christian guy and <.>she's yeah been out with <{><[>lots of word <[>yeah i know is she still at the same place or <{><[>has she shifted or <[>i don't <&>20:00 know don't know she's dropped out of circulation and <{><[><.>that's that's what she does when she knows that she's <,> doing things that she shouldn't be doing <[>OH yeah <{><[>tut <[>and um so i'll try and get in touch with her again that's SO <{><[>quick though it's amazing <[>word i know i know i mean lisa and wayne for example when they <.>got they got engaged <.>after what was it it would have been six weeks? and um yeah i mean at least they've sort of waited quite a long time before they get <{1><[1>married and sort of to make <{2><[2>sure that's what they wanted <[1>yeah <[2>yeah yeah cos everyone was saying how quick that was for example <.>but two months but it's <.>just i mean even if it's the right person mm <.>getting getting married that quickly <{1><[1>i mean you haven't adjusted to the them you haven't got to <{2><[2>know them and it usually means that down the track sort of like six months down the track all of a sudden there's all these things <{3><[3>that you haven't worked worked through <[1>yeah <[2>yeah <[3>mm that's right that become major <{1><[1>stumbling blocks <.>and and just cause heaps of <{2><[2>hassles that could have been avoided <[1>mm <[2>mm mm i mean i just think of <{><[>allan and i for example after six months we could have got married <.>and voc you know when we got engaged and <.>just it's only now that you're realising a lot of other little things <[>word <&>21:00 yeah <{><[>that you hadn't have even thought of <[><.>that that come up mm before <{><[>that's right and it just puts extra strain on it <[>that's right mhm tut oh dear word i wonder if she's happy though you know if it's what she really wanted no i don't know i don't know mm but i guess time will tell <.>but mm tut mm so how <.>old how old's her girl she's um i think she's five and is she at a foster <{><[>home <[><.>sh yeah yeah she's <.>at now this is complicated jude's <,> ex fiance like it's ursula's dad mhm oh i see his sister oh right is fostering her so it would be her natural auntie yeah yeah <{><[>mm <[>tut mm and she doesn't want to give ursula up because she doesn't approve of jude <{><[>but jude wants her back so <.>they've <.>they've it's got to go through the courts <[>mm yeah because she um wants <{><[>to get her back <&>22:00 <[>looks like this other lady won't give her back so <{><[>jude's got to be able to prove that she's now a stable mother <[>mm yeah and um stuff so but i mean she sounds like she's come through a heck of a lot <{1><[1>and she's sort of settled down a lot <{2><[2>more <[1>yeah <[2>yeah she has even just the last six months she's just come so far mm um she's still on the methadone which i don't know whether that would affect it or not yeah um <,> <{1><[1>but um yeah tut she's come a long way but i <.>just i think she's just sort of coming <.>to things are a little bit quick <{2><[2>at the moment <[1>mm <[2>yeah just wanting to get sorted out and <{1><[1>settled and <{2><[2>yeah <[1>yeah <[2>which is understandable yeah but i mean it yeah it can cause other problems too mm <{><[>mm <[>tut so yeah well it's almost our twenty minutes laughs well we've done well <&>22:42 <&>end of conversation
