I've got no <{1><[1>power i've just gotta nudge it down <{2><[2>a little way <.>but <[1><.>but <[2>yeah but you <.>sh you go straight down the middle sometimes quite nicely straight down the <{1><[1>middle and <.>i i <&>2:00 might have a bit of power but <{2><[2>i tend to <[1>yeah <[2>yeah but you've gotta have power all those good players <{><[>inhales <.>when <[>do the sideways motion you see golf is like fast bowling at cricket because if you gotta young fellow wants to be a fast bowler at cricket this is true you've gotta teach him to bowl FAST yeah and then <.>s he'll bowl EVERYwhere and then you've gotta straighten him up yeah but you can't teach him to bowl straight and then make him bowl faster and it's the same with golf we had a young fellow in our club sammy jones when he was seventeen he was wellington provincial champion now <{><[>he's a terrific player and when sammy was a kid fifteen and sixteen oh he could SWIPE honestly terrific but you know he was on about a two or three but ALL over the course <[>yeah yeah and then sammy straightened himself up you know and he played in the freyberg played in everything and hit a long way but he hit straight but you've GOTta <{><[>teach them <[>yeah had a long way <{><[>first <[>yeah that's right it's like a fellow like ewen <&>3:00 chatfield <{1><[1>they could never teach him to bowl fast <{2><[2>but he could bowl straight cos they gotta teach them to bowl fast first <[1>yeah yeah <[2>no yeah and you'll be all right in the golf cos you're learning to hit a long way learning to hit a <{><[>long one <[>yeah that's right WE had a young fellow in the golf club and he was a good player and he hit very straight but he never <.>just to get RIGHT to the top he never hit just far <{1><[1>enough you know he <.>w <.>he some of the long holes he couldn't reach in two where the others could <{2><[2>and you've got the old <[1>yeah <[2>yeah got <.>the got the power got the gym work got the power mm ah but you won't play footie this year will you yeah mate did the doctor say you can play oh exhales no not <.>sh well he told me i couldn't run for three weeks and that was about two and a half weeks ago yeah and er so i went for a run and it seems to be fine <.>didn't <{><[>didn't <[>i <.>was i'll go to training tonight and um <{><[>see how that goes <[>when you go to gym do you do arm work or leg work well i haven't been able to do any leg <{><[>work so that's so i've been doing UPPER body it's called <[>no that's what i mean upper <{><[>body power power <&>4:00 well you could take <.>w whatshisname with you and get his leg fixed up <[>so yeah upper power tut gary? <[2>yeah oh he's got all the gear yeah he's <.>got i saw those great big boots they weigh some don't they yeah i'd never picked a pair up till the other day when <{1><[1><.>i i was there yesterday and i picked <.>up they <.>weigh some i wouldn't <{2><[2>like to clump around in them for long <[1>yeah <[2>yeah NA but they um <.>they're feel bloody funny when you put them on too you <{><[>know they're real huge <[>yeah well they've got ALL these buckles <{1><[1>and they're GREEN and <{2><[2>purple and black you know oh christ i don't know i found it terrible <[1>yeah <[2>purple laughs laughs yeah yeah they're going for it but he goes there oh a lot he <.>goes he's got fellas at mobil he knows they go to christchurch fly down there then they go by car yeah but this week he'll be a very dear week and he said it to his mother i don't know i never seem to save any money laughs you know and he goes skiing EVERY WEEK and he'd earn some too <{><[>at mobil wouldn't he <&>7:00 <[>yeah yeah <.>he make <.>u up to <{><[><.>thir <.>thir they go up <[>is he an engineer there or something yeah they go up to ohakune and they go <{><[>voc every week <[>yeah yeah you know it's not cheap going up the mountain is it and he's got skis and gear and rubbish and <,> came home brought <&>pronounced bought all <.>a big bag of thing home he said mum i'm going away on friday night do you think you'll have all my washing done by the <.>t laughs he's ANOTHER one another one you think you'll have it <{><[>all don't you i'll get it done i'll get it done for you she said <[><.>jeez that <.>happens it happens in that family doesn't it yeah sarah just spoils them god she just loves to have the boys home and just spoils them mm ANYTHING you know make them something special for dinner when they come home and then david just lays on the floor and eats and eats and eats and he's never full yeah <{><[>laughs <[>you know then he goes out in the weekend with you and doesn't eat <{><[>probably <[>yeah oh no hamburgers probably that's right a few hamburgers that's the way to go but he's got a bit of beef he's built up big he's got quite big he goes to the gym a lot yeah he usually comes around and sees me on saturday morning <{><[>or saturday <.>about saturday after lunchtime <&>8:00 <[>voc does he go to the same gym as you no he's goes er voc where does he go les mills i think oh yeah and um nah he comes around and sees me mm reports on how it's gone and usually it hasn't gone too well saturday <{><[>because er he's er not feeling that flash <[>okay <.>so oh look wouldn't after <.>fri he wasn't feeling that sprightly when he walked in really was he after friday night no no goes and works it off a bit and then he comes in saying oh i didn't have a good session at the gym today <.>because nah well wasn't feeling that <{><[>good <[>the head would be DOWN yeah that's right well i've seen <.>them we used to you know er golf you know after saturday night at golf they used to walk in on sunday and there were some that weren't sprightly at all you know had been to golf till midnight on saturday and they'd walk in sunday morning and some of them not good at all heads DOWN you <{1><[1>know just <.>si <.>si sitting there didn't know whether to get the clubs out of the locker or just sit in the <{2><[2>corner and i'd annoy them when i was secretary of the golf club inhales and oh way back we used <.>to all round the old <&>9:00 clubhouse we had long built in seats you know with <{3><[3>squabs on them and i used to get down and of course NObody played golf till about half past eight in those days <{4><[4>on sunday morning and i used to get down there eight oclock on sunday and bodies are <{5><[5>scattered <[1>yeah <[2>laughs <[3>yeah yeah <[4>yeah right yeah <[5>laughs hadn't made it home no hadn't made it and nobody had cleaned up you know and there was bottles and ashtrays and glasses under <{><[>all the tables not flash <[>yeah yeah no when you go and the odd bod <{><[>lying in <.>the <[>the old story i get <.>whoever whoever closed the bar wasn't going to clean up <{><[>anyway laughs <[>no oh never used <.>to it was NEVER cleaned up on saturday and sunday morning but <.>i'd i'd leap around the wall and <{><[><.>s you know they'd wake up and sort of look at you laughs not good not good but they don't do that too often now they all go home early the driving's got them gone the driving <[>yeah shit the driving's got everyone hasn't it oh yeah like somebody told me at the golf club the <.>t the bar's down by about half is that right yeah cos just no one will drink <{><[>anymore <[>they'll just have a couple of jugs of beer and go home yeah they're driving their <&>10:00 cars in <{><[>and they won't have it <[>voc don't think it's made too much difference at the petone league club though they got a big clubroom? have <{><[>they where is it <[>oh reasonable <{><[>size <[>at the park yeah down at <{1><[1>macewen park <{2><[2>they <[1>yeah? <[2>and <.>they they have a bar open <.>what what saturday night after footie yeah thursday night after practice yeah saturday night and sunday night oh sunday night too? well usually because prench play on sunday oh yeah usually our boys play on sunday i don't know if they're still keeping it open <{><[>because <[>do they get a good muster oh sunday they don't get such a good muster mm because it's basically only the prams and a few supporters yeah yeah but um saturday they usually do yeah mm they usually get a reasonable sort of muster most of the people live locally anyway so <.>they <{1><[1>they go have quite <{2><[2>a big night <[1>yeah <[2>we have a few come over the golf club friday night and they er get there about four half past four five oclock yeah and they have a few grubs and the caterers there have put on a meal and they stay for a meal and then go home yeah we've quite a few do that you know there can be forty or fifty there that's right they just come over and have a <&>11:00 meal and you know it's a cheap meal and have a few grubs and go home but saturday's very quiet at the golf club mm cos with the licence they've got to shut at a certain hour too <,> you know with your licence yes you know and er <.>th i think they're only about eight oclock or something like that is that right yeah when I was in the golf club there were NO licences there were <.>no it was <.>all you just ran the bar and then she was at midnight some nights <{1><[1>and she's still <{2><[2>ROARING <[1>yeah <[2>yeah? both laugh you know <.>it's it'd be midnight and it was terrific yes and do you go <.>that you don't go out the club? <{><[>unless you play yeah <[>oh do sometimes yeah yeah sometimes <{><[>go there <[>word yeah but um <{><[>not <.>very <[>play spot the pakeha yeah play spot the pakeha there's three of us i think oh well that's pretty <{><[>good that's pretty good <[>yeah but er you know if the boys play in town i <.>don't no go it's not worth going all <{1><[1>the way out there for <.>a <.>b one beer and then coming all <{2><[2>the way back <[1>no <[2>then you gotta drive back again yeah that's <{><[>right <[>voc oh no go out there if they're playing out in the valley somewhere yeah go out there sniffs that's not too bad <&>12:02
