<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>0:36 hey are you gonna do your studies next year mark through vic <{><[>you were going to <[><.>i <.>i <.>i i want to serious <.>i <.>i well you gonna finish off geology no mary did geology i started doing sciences botany and zoology sniffs tut i might go back anna <.>says <.>s anna wants me to go back because um she says what am i going to do if i <&>1:00 leave here but you know it's <,> bit of motivation yeah <{><[>i mean <.>that's <[>i'd find <.>it i'd find it a lot more motivating than doing fire service studies though yeah of course it is <{><[>far more challenging eh <[>is <.>it it's not <.>just it's not even just the <.>challenge it's just the fact that it's um tut just more interesting lot more interesting yeah yeah mm <{><[>oh <[>fire service seems to have an <.>art <.>have <.>have has got study down to an art of boring people to death <{><[>exactly a fine art <[>yeah well i <.>don't you <.>start <.>start i mean i've had a look at some management papers and shit <.>that i can't get into that because you <.>think well you're doing that stuff anyway so er you know i don't know <.>i i'd sooner <{><[>i'd really word yeah but i mean it's <.>it's it's WHAT YOU DO but they just put buzzy terms on it so i thought i've got to do something next year <[>it's probably early days though yeah like <{><[><.>that <.>that that one that <.>they're word seem to want to apply to word this new thing <.>that what do they call it flatten <.>the <[>tut flatten the structure flatten the structure it's short for <&>2:00 <{1><[1>sacking middle management <{2><[2>laughs oh i don't know <[1>laughs <[2>yeah tut <.>oh yeah <.>oh <,> <{><[>i actually might go and do geology <[>bullshit well <.>wh <.>wh inhales <{><[><.>what's <[>cos <.>i cos i've got one ulterior motive to do that i actually enjoy geology and i actually did six credits in geology when i was there but um <,> my sister did it and she's finished her degree majoring in geology and so she's got all the books laughs oh yeah so she's got all the textbooks well why don't that cuts the cost down a lot why don't we <.>see <.>w we should head up there tomorrow <,> tut <{><[><.>and and see um <[>yeah see the registrar yeah cos even if i just did six credits which is effectively one paper isn't it no lots <.>of twelve credits i should say yeah one paper cos i mean that <.>sh you know it knocks off something <.>that's that's enough to keep you interested at least you're doing something eh yeah cos see um tut well this <.>y this summer we're gonna get six grand together <.>or <&>3:00 from the credit union we're gonna <.>bloody start doing that bloody extension to the house oh right <.>it's we've um inhales i looked at the plans and um voc <.>the the date on them is november ninety <{><[>laughs we've been sitting on them now <.>f <[>oh mate probably cos <.>you you're always doing other people's work eh that's it <.>wh whereabouts you working at present this guy up in newlands doing his kitchen oh god <.>so <{><[>oh <[>so yeah <.>that so it's november ninety so it's been dragging on a long time so inhales i said to anna what we should do is just <,> get some money and then just work till that runs out <,> so that's <.>probably that'll probably keep me busy er um between that and varsity yep <.>next you know doing say twelve credits between that and varsity next year <{><[>that'd be quite a <.>good <[><.>well tut i'll ring <.>i'll if i <.>get a chance today i'll ring up and see who we speak to <.>the there's actually <.>a er i've got <.>a <&>4:00 i've got a name um i forget it but yeah we'll give her a ring and see if we can make a appointment to see her tomorrow i should actually do bit of business management too because <,> i got <.>that i did that paper this year what about industrial relations would you be into that <,,> cos <.>i <.>it's i mean <.>i i'm not going to be <.>able i'm not going to stick to administrative papers cos i mean as i say i mean you're doing this stuff anyway so i mean what's the point of studying that's why i sort <.>of <.>i i just can't get into it but industrial relations i think that would be good i could do that <{><[>word <[>cos i mean if the two of us were doing something it would make life a HELL of a lot <{><[>easier if nothing else <[>it put <.>it puts you back on <.>the mm you sort of push each other along eh mm cos that was the easiest thing the first year at varsity um <,> it was easy cos i went to saint pat's and there <{><[><.>were <[>bob are <.>you are <.>you are you ready yeah <.>just we'll just finish our comments <{><[>yeah <[>laughs um at saint pat's the easy thing <&>5:00 <.>was was the fact that there was um well probably twenty five guys came from our school and there was probably <,> five or six in most of my classes yeah so you actually had someone that you knew <{><[>that you could study with <[>laughs word yeah and work with and <.>what <.>that <.>that's yeah <.>i've <.>if <.>if whereas i could imagine if you went there on your own on your own as an adult or even if you went from some strange school <.>that yeah and you knew <.>no knew nobody it'd sort of put you on the back foot a wee bit to start with yeah yeah <&>5:35 <&>there are three or four people in the conversation with this section not transcribed <&>9:18 <&>BB is the same as BB above CH is a different person from AD above i um <,,><&>5 had about five close shaves in the last month oh i must just about be due to inhales due for a bump due for a bump i have to go up <.>t i had that little wee <.>den fender bender on the bloody suzuki i have to go up and build a new bumper up at larry's <,,> so my winch can fit on oh i'd just use like a bit of three bar one and a half channel or something eh i don't know what i'll do or a place line <&>10:00 <,,><&>5 well or if you get some four by two channel i don't know i might do i might do that and then just bend the ends round a bit cut little v's out and bend the ends round and weld it up yeah and then the <.>oth the other advantage you got with that is you can run a rod from inside the channel back into the centre of er of your four by two so that it actually acts like a gusset oh yeah and then i'd get that and you end up <{><[>with <[>yeah yeah and you know you sort of end up <.>with <,> and then you <.>have you run one back in like that oh yeah <,> laughs <.>bloody <.>x x marks the spot i'll have <.>to i've got that <.>little that fifty by fifty r h s heavy wall r h s yeah what you mean fits into that winch and then i need to have a little <.>ho hole that fifty by fifty r h s that's the hardest thing fabricating that <,> thing that that'll fit into <&>11:00 and that'll go on the bumper and then i might make up some bull bars as well well if you um i think i'll just have to fold a couple of bits of steel <,> larry reckons <.>he he's gonna do it in <.>the in <.>the he's got a guillotine and a press at his work oh yeah either that or what you could do is um <,> you know how your channel's <,> sort of shaped like that mm well <,,> all you do is where this face here goes down in there mm <,,><&>3 just cut a square out looking down on top oh no it's got to go in the front the <.>winch the winch body's like this there's <.>a that's <.>the <,,><&>6 that's the box which the winch is in yeah and there's the winch drums <&>12:00 yeah and the fair lead runs out there there's a hole there and you <.>stick <.>it <.>its <.>its <.>been they've actually fabricated an r <.>h an r h s type section which fifty by fifty fits inside neatly snorts yeah so <.>it's <.>it's it's <.>not it's not a standard size they must have had someone make it for them you know making a few hundred metres of it and then they just use it for making these winch boxes inhales and then that goes in there so you get a little piece of r h s about tut you know <,> yay long and then you just drill a hole through it and then when you stick it in there a pin goes through and that holds the winch on so what i need in the bumper is a hole like that and then you poke the other end in and put a pin through and then that's your winch whacked on there piece of twelve mill rod i mean shit that'll take four tonne wouldn't it yeah but that's all the winch can pull <,,><&>4 <&>13:00 and then just a couple of <,> big c hooks on the front there for recovery and you double purchase it <{><[>just take it back to there <.>rather so that the load is on there and there rather than <[>laughs yeah all the load back to the one word oh that's my snatch block another snatch block there laughs triple it? yeah that's all you got to do <{><[>but <.>there <[>equal length no hassle there but i <.>thought you know that <.>l <,,> make those channel that fits <.>round piece that fits round there and then those bull bars that go up like that you know and the bars through it make one of them too <,> larry reckons they're not too hard to make he said the most important thing <,> is when you cut out the shape of them when you put the flat on there cos you use fairly thin flats and he said to tack it in plenty of places as you go <&>14:00 yeah that's all i do and he says you got to tack it heaps as <.>you especially round there did you see the one i made up for richard's richard johnson's landrover no <.>it's it's the same as brien's mm er his landcruiser <{><[>yeah <[>yeah landcruiser but if you're going to do that i'd like it in aluminium in some ways <.>you you're actually better off putting the flat on last yeah yeah i just <.>did couldn't work my pipes through and shit yeah <,> yeah <,> but i can't decide whether to run one from there around the wheel arch and back underneath the sill <.>it's it's adding a lot of weight eh like brien's got that yeah well <.>i that one of richard's that <.>i done they done that it's a lot of weight it's not so bad on <{1><[1>a landcruiser but i don't want to keep adding weight till it's <{2><[2>word <[1>word <[2><.>because cos the ones er that i made up for his <.>landcruisers cruiser were actually canted forward like a cow catcher <,,> yeah and i run another one off word one right about <&>15:00 here somewhere down like that back to the wheel arch back there you know what i mean it's all right that you <.>c i mean you can add that sort of weight to a landcruiser but to a suzuki that's why i sort of <.>think like aluminium would make quite a good bull bar you know what a <{><[>word <[>but it <.>bends it bends easily that's <.>th ONE down side to it <{><[>but the thing is it's very very light <,> i mean <,> it does make the front of the thing real divvy doesn't it you end up having it DIVING into holes all the time <,,><&>3 um <[>bends laughs <.>talk talking about suzukis i <.>s suzukis i saw one this morning yeah yeah i passed him there about all he was getting out of it was about eighty five k down the motorway laughs what was it um just a fourwheel drive suzuki but it must've been an early one because the registration was oh is <.>about <&>16:00 is it the same shape as mine no oh <.>i well i know it's the old <.>one older shape yeah was about um more rounded <{><[><.>and <[>l about l registration k l m somewhere round about there so it's probably what an eighty <{><[>three eighty two <[>about oh it'd be a <.>f could actually be an old eight hundred <,> the last of the eight hundreds <,> there are a FEW actually that are real late model and they got three cylinder eight hundreds in them the <.>j japanese imports and they're not <.>very they're SLOW oh yeah they pay tax on their um <.>capacity engine capacity <.>like yeah well that's voc <,> that's like that diesel tax that's a waste of bloody time i mean anything up to two thousand c <.>c up to two and a half tonnes pays the same road tax <&>16:52
