<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>5:53 we have to do another barbecue like we did last year too on the beach beach yeah <,,> <&>6:00 um <,,> so when are you going down you're going down in december yeah <{><[>the twenty fourth <[>and then twenty fourth you're going down on the twenty FOURTH? yep laughs why at SEVEN oclock in the morning laughs god have you booked it yep oh that's right i booked and mum payed for it and now we have to pay her back is johnny going too no but he thinks that he might like to to um come on christmas day and then <.>go go home the next day or something sick laughs so <{><[>we'll see <[>get a egg so how come you're going on the twenty fourth then so you can have christmas with johnny first no no i'm not doing anything with johnny first both laugh no we're going to um i just thought we'd just stay there and hopefully i can look after conrad and oh right <{><[>yeah <[>stuff but i won't be getting karen cos karen's going to her grandmother's <,> which is a shame yeah the other thing that was keep me down here is i'm going to um what i thought i might do is ring up central karori because <&>7:00 <{><[>last year lots of parents <.>got we <.>like <.>we what am i supposed to do with my kids if you're closed <[>mm closed that's right that's <{><[>mm <[>it's an orDEAL so i thought that i could um see if that would mean i'd have to come back earlier <{1><[1>in january so i don't know if i can be bothered <{2><[2>i had have to get a <.>firm <.>a a proper commitment first <[1>mm <[2>that's right that's right to do something but um i also thought i could i see if someone wants some cleaning doing now and then but <.>they they might um have changed their policy though this year mightn't they they might not close for so long um <{><[>no well i <.>think well <[>cos they finished about the twenty second or twenty <{1><[1>third last time <{2><[2>didn't they <[1>yeah <[2>but they've with a particular union so they're entitled to two weeks holiday oh they're with the consenting parties i think um and so they <.>have they have to have two weeks ow i think they had THREE last time didn't they they started about the fourteenth or something really late yeah i think that's right melanie's centre has six weeks holiday oh is that right <&>8:00 yep they close a couple of days before christmas and then they have two <,> they go back about about the twentieth of january to the twenty fourth of january something like that timothy's school finishes on the the wednesday before what day IS christmas <{><[>saturday <[>twenty friday ah <{1><[1>saturday sorry <{2><[2>saturday <.>his so i have him at home TEN days before christmas or nine days or something it's a LONG time <[1>friday <[2>saturday massive long are you laughs freaking word yeah school doesn't normally finish on wednesday it finishes on FRIDAY it used to <.>finish school used to finish really early before christmas <{1><[1>i can remember as a kid that it would <{2><[2>finish like <[1>that's what i said <[2>two weeks before <{><[>yeah <[>yeah and NOW it's finishing like <,> i <.>can one <.>with one year beth finished like on the monday and christmas was FRIDAY <{1><[1>or something like <{2><[2>that she only had like two or three shopping days to go <,,><&>4 does timothy buy you guys presents yet or not <[1>yeah <[2>yeah yeah <&>9:00 no he hasn't yet i don't know WHEN you start that we used to go with our little bits of pocket money and buy things mm but i don't think timothy's that kind of person laughs he counts up his money and thinks well what <{><[>can i buy <[>i want to buy this so that leaves two cents left and <{1><[1>laughs and sorry mate <{2><[2>i can't buy anybody laughs <[1>laughs <[2>what can i get my mum for two cents laughs but we used to get like ten cents pocket money so <.>you oh not everybody but i can remember taking my ten cents to buy somebody a birthday present or somebody <.>a well <.>what i just wouldn't have LOLLIES yeah whereas he's the other way he he'd buy all his things first we were trying to get him to buy granddad something and maryanna hopped out <.>t of the car and bought granddad a liquorice and this and that she wanted to BUY him <{><[>all these things yeah and timothy was kind of thinking well <[>lots if i buy him a liquorice that means I can't eat one <&>10:00 that's right and it <.>was it's getting a bit bit HORRIBLE mel is a bit um yeah a little bit like that she wants to give people things but then like with that present with maryanna she gives her the present she lets her open it then she wants it <{><[>back <[>back yeah mm but melanie GIVES people things but she um i pay for it mm and she doesn't like it very often yeah um i look for little things like if i see a little mickey mouse thing for five dollars i'll buy it and <{><[>say to beth from mel <[>oh yeah oh laughs she spends five dollars mm but that's still twenty bucks that's heaps cos that's now <.>that that's <{><[>yeah that's even more actually because <.>it <.>flo five dollars for my mum five dollars for dad and shona and beth and melissa <[>it'd be more than that mm and maryanna and <,,> ben clay this year yeah not dion so that's all right so that's seven five sevens are thirty five yeah thirty <{><[>five bucks <[>thirty five dollars <{1><[1>word i just want them to <{2><[2>spend like ONE dollar or <{3><[3>fifty cents or something <[1>it's <.>still <[2>unless <&>11:00 <[3>yeah the other thing <{><[>mum used to do was give us ten dollars at christmas to <.>s and we had to save up the rest <[>like a moro bar each mm and what we were expected to do was spend one weeks pocket money on a person yeah so like we got two dollars forty or something so we spent two dollars forty on word a person and that was it um beth's a bit like um timothy mm she's um she'll go down to the shop to buy you something and she'll see <.>her something that she has to have or she might just need a lolly to get all the way home again and things like <{><[>that <[>yeah yeah so it's like spend fifty <{><[>cents on you and a dollar on me laughs <[>you never expect very much from beth you just <.>always but the thing is like last year she gave me that have you seen that pink and white <{><[>vase yeah <&>12:00 <[>yeah yeah yeah that's really <{><[>nice <[>and mum said to me later on she got that for thirty cents <{><[>and it was covered in WAX <[>mm oh yeah and she'd scraped all the wax off and scrubbed it all up and made it look really <{><[>nice and and beth was really MAD that mum had told me how much it was <[>nice yes yeah but it doesn't actually matter cos i LOVE it yeah <{1><[1>yeah it's really nice and she took her time to clean it all up <{2><[2>as well <[1>i think it's really really beautiful <[2>yeah and she got it from a garage sale so i can just imagine like beth spent five dollars and then she thought SHIT <{1><[1>you know i've got one dollar left and i'm supposed to be buying her something laughs tut oh here's a vase <{2><[2>laughs so voc yeah i don't really care i i KNOW now not to expect a lot from beth <{3><[3>because she's THAT kind of <{4><[4>person and melissa's the OPPOSITE i know to look really carefully for things for melissa cos she spends a lot of inhales time looking and and getting <.>some she buys thoughtful <{5><[5>things things that and <.>she's <.>sh like she buys me FLOWERS and puts them on my television and doesn't tell me <[1>laughs and her christmas presents yeah <[2>laughs <[3>yeah <[4>person <[5>things yeah yeah she's nice eh yeah she's like al <&>13:00 maybe those two should get together yeah i'll say but al doesn't um oh <{1><[1>we WERE trying to jack that up once weren't we that's right al's presents <.>aren't yeah they're all right peter gets the most expensive but he leaves it till like the last minute and then he's rich anyway so he <.>s he says if something <{2><[2>suits someone <[1>word yeah laughs <[2>is peter the one that's older than you no i've got noone older than me the next one <{><[>down <[>no the next one's simon who plays the drum <{1><[1>and the next one's pete and he he says if he <{2><[2>SEES something that <[1>yep <[2>oh is peter with marina marian marian he <.>ha he sees i haven't met him yet you know he sees something he really likes and then he'll um buy it and if it costs fifty dollars then they're lucky but equally if he sees something for twenty dollars that someone else will like that's what they get except that he gets my kids the BIG BIG presents in boxes like you know that camera that bubbles oh yeah <&>14:00 and to me that's a bit dumb <{><[>laughs <.>it yeah it costs like thirty bucks and it's just <,> it looks really good in the big box and everything but <.>it it isn't <[>it doesn't work does it <&>next utterance addressed to baby bluh yeah so <.>he but he bought um damon a baseball that <.>co i think it was no a BASketball cap that cost fifty bucks yeah yeah see beth when she came down here um one time she came down here when we were still at the other house she went and bought herself um a softball cap <{><[>that was thirty five dollars <[>mm yeah and i thought SHIT <{1><[1>you know thirty five dollars to put it on your head it's <.>n <,> yeah OH <{2><[2>um <[1>word <[2>it's expensive eh yeah it IS <.>it's like i just keep thinking i could earn thirty five dollars i'll give you a HAT yeah you know like for FIVE and he'll have thirty <{><[>dollars left <[>oh word a mcDONalds hat yeah that's right but think you know like then she does a shit because she hasn't got the money for SHOES and things like <{><[>that it's like well wear your hat <[>mm yeah that's right i don't think i've got any sympathy for for her <.>that that's mm <&>15:00 see <.>i i've only got myself to blame if i can't spend money on clothes and food and stuff <{1><[1>because yeah i manage my own money and not very cleverly so i can't really tell her what to do it's a bit like mm so i better just stay quiet because i <.>don't she'll LEARN as well she'll KNOW in time and i think her mum's done it really well when she gave us our fifty dollars family benefit <{2><[2>each month and if you want a hundred dollar pair of shoes you don't buy anything for a month <{3><[3>and then you get your hundred dollars <{4><[4>and then you go and buy your shoes <[1>mm <[2>mm <[3>oh yeah <[4>oh that's a good idea oh yeah and if you want to spend it on a fifty dollar <.>h hat then you spend it on a fifty dollar hat but DON'T come running to mum if you've got no winter <{><[>shoes <[>shoes yeah <.>she so she will yeah makeup comes into that but tampax and shampoo and stuff doesn't mm cos that's family stuff that mum just buys buys oh yeah <&>16:00 my family must spend a fortune on tampax yeah like all those girls yeah when i was home there was <,> me and gabrielle i don't know about karyn and mum mum definitely got don't know about karyn and probably not anne <,> and then when i left home anne started so that was still four women in the family mm and then gabrielle's going back to live there now that's right <{><[>word <[>so it's four again <,> and then if i go up the year after it's gonna be <{1><[1>five word <{2><[2>GOD is it i firmly believe they should be free <[1>five <[2>gosh they should be shouldn't they every woman should get twelve government dockets a year <&>16:45
