<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>7:20 so when you did your business course where did you do that at newlands college oh right it <.>was <,> was it eight weeks or ten weeks oh i can't remember <,> yeah a guy from the lower hutt city council right clears throat well he was on contract to them who who used <.>to why on contract to do small business in the small business unit there he um yeah he came to run the course and he'd got in everybody from accountants to lawyers to salespeople <,> everyone we wanted someone from the tax department oh right covered all the stuff yeah cos i've got a friend um tut who's just left teaching yeah tut and she's decided <.>that well she <&>8:00 basically just had enough of teaching and her health and everything was not good and so <,> she's setting herself up <,> well she's doing gardening and <.>pet look after <{1><[1><.>pet come and feed your pets and all that sort of thing she's dotty about pets and animals and um so SHE'S doing a course she saw it advertised somewhere i'm not sure <,,><&>3 yeah it's somewhere in the city it's an <.>ups upstairs in <{2><[2>some building it's not like <.>a inhales it's not at the polytech <{3><[3>or at high school or anything like that tut and she um but they do <.>f two full weeks <{4><[4>of fulltime and then in the second two weeks it's half days <[1>oh yeah <[2>yeah <[3>no <[4>oh right oh <{><[>right <[>nine <.>n till twelve or something for the <.>so so over a MONTH oh and she'd only been going three days when i last saw her <,> oh no perhaps she'd had the first week there <,> but she said it was really great i mean she was learning HEAPS and <{1><[1>they were sort of giving her ideas about <&>9:00 marketing you know you know <{2><[2>and how you go about marketing and of course she's starting to make some contacts with <.>s a lot of them are people who'd been made redundant from jobs and <,> so they're looking to um <.>tr er start in a new venture basically but with no <{3><[3>skills in that area and <,,> so no she was REALLY enjoying it <[1>oh yeah <[2>yeah <[3>that's good though eh well i found on the on the um one that I did <,> most of the people were in employment and <.>ei either looking at going out on their own but a virtual <.>h really interesting group of people one girl there has started her own business in virtual reality <,> she is a consultant for virtual reality systems so er as bright as bright as bright right so she started her own um business as a consultancy doing that there was a guy who was in advertising but he he wants to get into <.>he he and his wife want to get into the backpackers' lodge type <,> um <,> scheme of <&>10:00 things right tut there was a chef <,> electrician two builders a hotel manager ALL sorts of people <,> so there's a really wide variety oh a sign writer and it was really interesting cos um it actually gives you a whole lot of contacts as well <{><[>you've actually got a network of people <[>right well this is what SHE'D found like she just came out oh it was last weekend she came <,> in and had a cup of coffee cos she'd come out to feed inhales one of the guy on the course's cat for the weekend laughs but you know <.>you i mean she's really starting from scratch and she's got no idea and <,> well i was sort of saying to her you're going to have to really watch that you cover your costs cos like she lives in island bay and to come out to newlands to <{><[>feed the cat well that's pretty expensive in itSELF and you have to have cover that <[>yeah you've gotta make sure you've got <{1><[1>two or three others i mean <{2><[2>virtually by the time you start your car up that's ten dollars gone <&>11:00 <[1>yes <[2>yes well he wants her to do um sort of ten days or something over christmas so i said well you'll have <.>to you know you really need to put some little notices in letter boxes <{1><[1>around the area so that you get several so yes you're coming out to do <,> three or four or something <{2><[2>and that would make it worthwhile <[1>yeah <[2>i ought to get her to come and do mine <,> while i'm away well it works out like a friend <.>an another friend in island bay's going to get her to do hers because like she pays i think it's either nine or ten dollars a night for it to go into the cattery inhales the cat HATES it yeah always comes back traumatised or something whereas um if she can leave it at home and sarah'll go in and <.>she'll i think she charges what is it five dollars a week or something extra to water your pot plants up to ten pot plants or something <,> so she'd do that sort of a couple of times a week you know so if there WAS <{><[>someone away she'll <[>yeah do all that and she'll um do gardening she's hasn't got <.>a the gears to do lawnmowing and that sort of thing <&>12:00 oh god i just got the mister green man to come round and give me a quote oh yeah twenty dollars each time thank you <,> but i decided oh i've got to do this i mean i haven't got the energy or the <{><[>time to do it and of course it's got away and he said to me oh he said this is quite long he said the first time will be more expensive and i said well it probably needs a good weed eat and really good sorted out first and he said oh yeah <,> so um <[>no so i mean <.>how what lawn are you talking about this bit out here yeah the front and down the driveway <{><[>there's quite a bit of lawn no but there's quite a bit of lawn <[>cos the back's not lawn yet is it is it still takes me a good hour to mow it right <.>t for it to be done properly and that and that includes the edges all being done right so that's once a fortnight and you HAVE to have it done once a fortnight? well i initially said to him once a month and i would DO it just mow the lawns in between and i still think i might i haven't told him anything different i might stick to that i don't know cos i just wonder you know with <&>13:00 those sorts of people can you just ring up no i don't think they'll just do it casually no <.>th <.>ch they'd obviously charge <.>m charge you more mm but at at least if they're coming in <,> at a reasonable space of time like especially over christmas and that when i'm away at least it won't be all overgrown and that when i come back right <,> oh yeah no voc um that's a good idea yeah yeah cos like between now and christmas it's just <.>absolutely yes chaotic i've got this big show next weekend at michael fowler centre oh yeah what's that one of the craft shows i've being doing got one at the michael fowler centre is it a christmas one or something <{1><[1>is it a special christmas <{2><[2>one who's organising it <[1>well i call <.>it <[2>yeah i call it the great oh angela and bruce christofferson craft fairs of the nineties they call themselves oh yeah so um got that and then <,> three weeks later is <&>14:00 thorndon fair <,> yes i think it's the <{><[>thirteenth of december or something twelfth or thirteenth <[>oh didn't that used to be january no no has it always been <{><[>prechristmas <[>yes sometimes it's been <,> end of november and sometimes it's been early december but <{1><[1>it's quite late this year <,,> yeah i saw your friend what's her name i never remember <{2><[2>her yeah i always see her <[1>i know i missed the last one <[2>susan yes no i <.>w so you think <.>it's it's the thirteenth of december yeah oh i must write it on my calendar i always love the thorndon fair oh i do too <{><[>but <[>if it's nice weather laughs thing is i've also got a craft show in waikanae the same weekend i decided to do BOTH <,> i've got someone to sell for me on the sunday while i'm at the thorndon fair so i've got to have stock enough for both <,> and um <,> when i go away i go away on the twenty second of december and i'm doing a craft show in taupo <,> on the <&>15:00 seventh eighth and ninth of january <,> so i've got to have all my stock done and packed before i go aha laughs tut well i can put through a hundred baskets a week can you really? mm they're beautiful i LOVE that fabric it's lovely <{><[>isn't it <[>doesn't it come out lovely i've got some really yummy fabrics now that's just <{><[>so rich <[>it's so i just sent this order to auckland today it's a four hundred dollar order there's two big boxes of stuff <,,> to a new shop that's opening up there cos i did a craft show in cambridge and um we drew people from auckland to do that to <{><[>come to that and <[>right <.>this these people were coming looking for stock for their shop i mean i spent nearly an hour talking to them <,,><&>3 and i got a order out of it so oh that's good well i only got the order a couple of weeks ago right but i mean that <&>16:00 makes <,> the travelling all the more worthwhile i mean it was a very worthwhile show right er but that made it even better yeah <,> so is that all you're actually doing now <{><[>baskets <[>yeah yeah <{><[>why <[>you're not doing any of the other things oh occasional pot pourri sachet or sunglass cases but only as an added extra when i've got the time right yeah oh they're lovely but i think um i thought that i might have killed the market but <,,><&>3 it just seems to be <,> getting better and better <,> but i thought that i might be on the plateau before you start going down but i <.>sil still seem to be on the upward <,,> <{><[>but really i mean the guy that sells me baskets came in a couple of weeks ago <&>17:00 and he said <.>i he said i've mentioned to these people there's <.>a a shop out in waitahu road called <&>name of shop <,> and he said i mentioned to <.>the they were looking for some different ideas for stock for their shop and he said i mentioned your baskets and they said to go out and show them and they'll buy whatever they want but i just don't have the chance to get out there <[>well that's good mm <,,> laughs no well i mean this is a really busy time isn't it with christmas <{><[>and craft markets and all that sort of thing <[>yeah i'm doing gear homestead on sunday but i'm not doing any of the smaller ones <,> i did one at ngaio toy library was it the week before last i mean that was reasonable and i'm just turning DOWN the others <.>if tut oh there's no point in me going out to sell <{><[>a hundred dollars <[>mm no no <,,> <{><[>oh that's really good <[>especially by the time you get a babysitter <{><[>in <[>yes no if you've gotta meet those sort of costs <.>it you've gotta make sure it's well worth <{><[>it <&>18:00 <[>yeah you know pay a babysitter ten dollars and then you got to um pay <.>f between fifteen and twenty dollars for your stall well god there's you might be making twenty dollars PROFIT <{1><[1>on it it's not worth it i <{2><[2>might as well be sitting at home making more stock for orders <.>or <[1>yeah <[2>no yes <,> yeah <,,><&>4 but i'm a bit choosy about where i put them too who i sell to <,> there's a shop out in upper hutt oh in trentham they're called victoriana have you ever been in there no <{><[>i've <[>it's quite interesting <{><[>though <[>hardly ever <.>been well you know i've never GONE near shops in upper hutt i've generally just been travelling through on the way to the wairarapa <&>18:42
