<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>3:37 but there's no voc there's no way that you could spend that amount of time together as a crew you imagine if WE did it without having the odd little tiff and yeah <{><[>exactly <[>fall out and things is there yeah yep that used to happen down here anyway like um <,> like with er <,,> oh it happened oh with birdie i used to have little bits of fallings little spinnings and that but that's just natural but was because what was happening with um with <&>4:00 the ladder and um i wanted to start getting trained on it after thumper and they said oh he and birdie said well you know that er snoopy's going into town and i says yeah and he says so that leaves us without an instructor i says oh i said nah nah i said but you're an instructor aren't you he says yeah he says but i can't because i got too much paperwork to do so i just went off the rails a little bit you know oh it's understandable yeah <{><[>it was just <.>that <[>because the ideal situation is to have everybody here trained isn't it yeah yeah well to me it was just oh he was just pissing around and that's and that's the thing that annoyed me more than anything else cos i was keen to get there and get it done get into it you know while while the the keenness was there but then you sort of feel a little bit deflated afterwards and and he took the message well i've had a big talk with um gareth lampey cos he's a senior instructor as well yep and it'll either be him or i think birdie's a senior instructor wasn't he yeah so one of those has got to come and make ME up eventually but what's <.>hap but gareth's opinion is the same as mine in reality is that you go out and you take somebody out in the back yard <&>5:00 maybe for a start off and spend a couple of hours or so going over all the basics of things <{1><[1><.>so until what we'd like to call it a preliminary certificate's passed <{2><[2>where we know that YOU can operate the ladder and from then on it should be able to i should just be able to just go out with you and nobody else on the ladder <[1>until <[2>yeah mm and do a training yep i <.>want because the only way you get to know how to work the thing is by getting out there and working it and the yeah worst thing about it is with the senior station officer being the instructor is that the pump crew's got to go everywhere the ladder is while we're doing our training <&>sighs yeah oh yeah like i was going to say because that changed <.>with mind you when snoopy was made up to instructor cos thumper just used to go out and um with snoopy with snoop and if they had a fire call he just drove off to the fire call yeah well <{1><[1>that's what <.>we hopefully we will be able to do <{2><[2>although it's going to be a hassle with me what i want to do is get clearance from clark to say <{3><[3>look let wilbur take the pump what's <.>wrong i mean there's two other <{4><[4>s s os that end of town <[1>he <.>was <[2>yeah <[3>yeah <[4>YEAH exactly <&>6:00 um let wilbur take the pump and we'll be going along anyway if i mean if it's a working job i'll take my crew back whatever yeah yeah it's not a problem i don't <.>s i don't really see it as a problem but for some reason the hierarchy in town or <.>e <.>f worse than that it was probably just clark you should've heard his performance yesterday for us to go down to this parade you know he <.>line got all the crew together here yeah and says now when we go i want a firefighter walking either side of the appliance watching the jewels you got to keep all the kids back it's helping safety you know and went on all this <{><[><.>to well in the end we we really went there and had a ball we just <[>mm yeah well <.>i it's like last year's one <.>o i did it with blue watch and um it was brilliant i mean i was amazed about the amount of people that turned out to it oh so was i i mean there just every street was just stacked all the way through i just didn't realise there were that many children in wellington yeah yeah and everyone wanted to touch it of course <{><[>everyone wants to touch the fire engine and there was only <,> probably eighteen inches two feet at times between the crowd and <&>7:00 the fire engine as it goes through <[>yeah i know the thing about i've always noticed about you know like a like a fire truck it just seems draw people it does doesn't it yeah it's like a magnet <,,><&>4 yes but never mind tut yeah well putting the cheerleader girls in front of <{><[>all our boys wasn't a good idea <[>laughs both laugh we tried to get them <.>s to fit in between the two fire engines but they decided they didn't want that either because the z b cheerleader girls they had their z b car making the music with them and of <{1><[1>course between the fire engines and we were flicking sirens on and off and doing all sorts of other things <{2><[2>so that was putting them off the the band but the sights were really worthwhile <[1>mm <[2>right well you miss out on a good one sometimes don't you mm i said to clark you know afterwards about you know er <.>what what about some stand down or something for the guys afterwards you know as <.>the has that been thought about and he said oh oh yeah you can knock them off a bit early on the two nights but i go in there and i read the <&>8:00 letter and it says er for compensation of time work will be taken in lieu at a later stage so oh is that right so that's why i've decided on the two nights and then we'll just do the job and finish and just <{1><[1>give it a clean <{2><[2>and put dinner on <[1>yeah <[2>yeah sounds <{><[>good <[>both nights yep and then kath has the cheek to get ring up and ask clark whether she gets <.>s <.>s gets to stand down because she was the last <{><[>downstairs here voc <[>oh WHAT did he say no he <.>didn't he just laughed at her both laugh just so so naive eh oh she is it's unbelievable i mean as you're saying that that night that we had that lady i couldn't believe it mm she <.>do definitely goes overboard she needs she's pissed me by the end of the day yesterday yeah she needs um she really needs to be pulled into line because down there i mean it's it's like a really sensitive situation i mean this guy was just about in in the throes of karking it um cos he was pretty well banged up but the way she was going i mean <.>i it was like it was like some big joke well the next morning she was still going cos she was on here <{><[>with you <[>yeah yeah saturday <&>9:00 yeah she was going on about i went to my first cut out and i said was it a bit gory didn't seem she didn't seem to have noticed anything like that no <{><[>no <[>i said what er what did did you do any of the cutting out what did you actually do yeah she <{1><[1>did some cutting saw <{2><[2>her do some cutting yeah but um i mean the guy <.>w he <.>w he was spewing all over the place and everything it wasn't you know and he he had some pretty good cuts on him and he had a broken femur and once we once we did the roll you know to get the roof er flipped back <[1><.>cos <[2><.>she's what was it a van or a car no no it was a car car yeah um <{><[>and <[>for some reason i thought it was a van i don't know why no and so um but once we got him out they just really ran quite quite fast to get him to the ambulance and put him in he was that bad um if that's the <.>k situation they should really have got a chopper on <{><[>probably word <[>where was it it was at the er b p service station down the hutt road had a couple down there haven't we yeah yeah i remember going there um when they wiped out this wiped out two pumps down there <&>10:00 one time mm i went there when there was a pump wiped out too from er petone yeah <,,><&>4 they just it was interesting like it's <,,> they seem to work pretty well together yeah i thought that she might've er gone to the pack a wee bit at the first gory one because some of those people that are that are um you know talky talky bubbly <{1><[1>bubbly talky when the crunch comes quite often they will voc <{2><[2>put the brakes on <[1>yeah yeah <[2>well i don't think she i don't really think um she saw the person you know as it was going cos she was just spinning too much at the <{><[>time <[>on a high i mean <.>y you have a look at you can see the differences between um her and mary and mary is is a lot more professional yeah there's no doubt about it yeah <{><[>you know <[>yeah she's almost immature isn't she yeah yeah you know for twenty eight years old nah there's something wrong there christ because i'm sure if she gets to her first house fire i hate to imagine what she's going to be like afterwards laughs won't be able to keep her quiet but i <&>11:00 know that um a lot of the guys tend to especially the brown watch guys that if they got a job going they'll whip the branch off her anyway not let her have a chance with it at all it's probably not the right thing to do otherwise she'll never learn <{><[>i just think she's got to grow up a bit first <[>i still yeah i still wouldn't like to um <,,><&>5 i still i wouldn't like to put my life in her hands as my number two mm <,> i'd think twice about it too because it'd be all right going into a house fire maybe because a house fire you usually aren't going to get into serious shit <{><[>but you imagine going into the that apartment fire how'd you like to have have have HER for your number two down there <[>mm i wouldn't i wouldn't like to you know for for this reason one is that if you have a look at upper body strength she hasn't got any no she's not that strong and you compare her to mary mary's built like a brick she's she's really solid and she IS strong and um you know <&>12:00 if you got into trouble you'd have to seriously think about well can i get myself out of this situation <,> you know it CAN be a bit frightening you're gonna have to hope that somebody else is with you as well yeah she's <.>ver very petite up top yeah got a big arse though both laugh voc or didn't you notice that no i didn't <&>12:21
