you do in the weekend anything exciting well <.>for during the christmas holidays i came back from christchurch HOping to paint the house the outside <{1><[1>of the house but the weather was poor er lot of mist and fog up here i never got round to doing that but i have been trying to get the bathroom finished that's been undone half done inhales for a couple of years now so while the family were out of it tut i had plenty of space i could leave wet things lying <{2><[2>around didn't have to worry about wet paint the biggest problem as you know was trying to get the colour right <[1>mm <[2>laughs yes yeah because when you get the test pots with the <{1><[1>paint they're acrylic they give a dull finish but in the bathroom we wanted a shiny <{2><[2>finish and of course once the reflection and the high gloss enamel was on the wall it was nowhere near what we wanted but rather than er not use the paint um it was a colour that we <&>10:00 both liked so we decided that i'd paint the laundry so i did that downstairs and at the moment er i've nearly finished doing the hall way upstairs so it's just about a re do of the house having i must say it's one thing that we're very pleased about and i don't say too much to our other people but we've finished paying OFF the house so it just gives us that mortgage money that WAS going elsewhere to do some um tut some maintenance that was needing doing around the place so that with a bit of gardening <{3><[3>er <[1>mm mm mm mm <[2>mm mm <[3><.>di did i tell you about my painting experience <,,> <{><[>in the <.>h in the holidays <[><.>y <.>y you started to well <.>w yeah um it's interesting <,> we decided to do do the four remaining bedrooms and you know that special ceiling one that i <{1><[1>have got and i did the ceilings voc and the two two of the bedrooms had quite good wallpaper so we left the left the wallpaper i just did the windows and the surrounds and the ceiling and <.>th it's come up they've come up <&>11:00 well and the other two rooms um clears throat had ceiling and <.>p painted wallpaper originally and the paint <{2><[2>was in good condition <{3><[3>the paper was in good condition so we thought we'd just paint those er walls again so i did the ceilings er with a <.>nu with a rust up <{4><[4>and <.>th with a special roller and that came up that came up really well and did all the windows <{5><[5>surround <[1>oh yes <[2>mm <[3>mm sniffs <[4>yes <[5>is this just paint for the ceiling was it yeah just ceiling paint <{1><[1>yeah just painted it up tut and did the windows in the the normal way and then i painted the walls so i put on two coats <.>s <.>s nice paint taubmans paint put it <.>o put it on the walls voc <,> looked very smart you know with all the cutting in round and i made a <.>s particularly good <{2><[2>job of cutting in yeah cutting it in really well and i thought oh i was stood back and i was really proud of the job and two days later it looked really good but three days <{3><[3>later <,> <.>w <.>we pat said to me kevin come and have a look at the the paint on the wall so i went in and it all had this crazy cracked pattern all across the <.>w all the walls in these in these <[1>right <[2>that's hard too isn't it oh <[3>exhales had you <{><[>put the paint on too thickly or er <[>two rooms <&>12:00 well i i've been painting houses and rooms for <{1><[1>years malcolm i've never ever experienced this clears throat so i thought what can it be tut so i didn't know what to do and i thought well maybe whatever the problem was might have been cured in by putting <.>i those things so i thought well i'll put another couple of coats of paint on <{2><[2>so i rolled rolled another couple of coats of paint on <[1>yeah i know <[2>laughs oh oh gosh looked really good i thought oh fine two days later it was still looking good and i thought oh gosh it's all fixed <{><[>no such luck within four days <,> THESE two coats had cracked <[>laughs had the do <.>y had it cracked in the same place no the original <.>or no further cracking further cracking <,> so i thought ah <,> strange what am i going to do now so i thought well <.>i what i'll do is i'll fill all those cracks so i yes <{><[>clears throat <[>i plastered with a very thin layer of plaster and sanded <{1><[1>it all off and made <.>th all the walls nice and smooth again <{2><[2>laughs and i thought i'll give it another two coats <{3><[3>of paint <[1>tut <[2>oh great <&>13:00 <[3>you'd be getting a bit frustrated by this <{><[>time wouldn't you laughs <[>tut i was getting a bit frustrated yes sending pat back to get more cans of paint inhales so then i painted it the the <.>w walls and we thought oh great you know after three days it was still fine <,> <{1><[1>what i didn't bank on was five days later voc all cracked again so i thought what are we going to do well really the only thing left to do <.>w <.>w from <.>ours our point of view was to take everything off the wall and then strip the whole walls and start from the <.>th the <{2><[2>word go <[1>laughs <[2>did you did you think of getting er one of the taubmans people <{><[>in to have a look at it <[>yes yeah that's what i was going to say well so <.>w what we decided to do was to get taubmans <{1><[1>the paint people out and the er the <.>p one of the paint experts came out he said oh said never seen this before in my life don't know what's caused this mm he said very interesting and we said very interesting too and he said well you know <&>14:00 people pay a lot of money for that sort of effect <{2><[2>laughs i said yes well i've created this effect with <.>a for nothing but i said that's not the problem i don't really like this effect so he <.>s <.>he he said well let's try a new <.>sa a sample of the paint so we <.>t tore off a <.>pie piece of the <{3><[3>word right down to the paper <[1>sniffs <[2>you'd be well aware of that wouldn't you so <.>wh word <[3>and once you had it all back onto paper <.>i er yeah and we we lifted it back and tore a piece off so he could take away the cracking for sampling and he took away the the can of paint and i had a ring back from taubmans later on they still <.>do are not sure all they can think of is there's too much paint on there BUT tut um i doubt that because it's <.>d you'd started straight over paper hadn't you no over PAINT but it was very thin paint yeah you could see the paper through the <{><[>paint so i think there's something else amiss somewhere with the paint i'm certain it's a paint problem tut <[>yes yes and they're working on it at the moment <&>15:00 no they're making a disclaimer about the paint oh that's a bit <{><[>er a bit bit naughty <[>yeah yeah yeah but <{1><[1>never mind i i it's it's what we'll have to do is voc tut now start from scratch by taking all that off the wall <{2><[2>laughs which is going to be a you know big job <[1>aren't they <[2>mm oh your next holiday job yeah <{1><[1>and then i'll i'll wallpaper <{2><[2>it i won't paint i'll just <{3><[3>wallpaper it mm <[1>oh well <[2>sniffs <[3>oh right is is there any way you can claim on er a job like that from insurance is it worth putting in <{><[>it's just something <[>tut exhales just it's more nuisance value really i mean <{><[>i've done the ceiling i've done the windows and really it's just a matter of stripping the walls and and tidying them up word <[>yes it's a it's a nuisance job mm but when you've mm repapered <{><[>you'll be satisfied that it's done <[>mm mm mm mm yes these things happen don't they as i was saying the trying to get paint colours right <{1><[1>and something like this <{2><[2>that time and effort that you can ill afford <[1>mm <[2>voc mm mm because you'll be doing other things um <{1><[1>tut yes and doing four rooms did all <&>16:00 four rooms go like this <{2><[2>or just a couple of them <[1>word <[2>no no no sniffs just the two two rooms our bedroom and another little bedroom but two other bedrooms the the they were already wallpaper walls and they were in really nice condition just the ceiling <.>we <{1><[1>had got um dull and the window frames so i just did the ceiling and the window frames and the skirting boards in those rooms <{2><[2>and left the wallpaper sniffs <[1>yes <[2>right tut while we're still on on the topic of painting tut um i've gone over paper i mean our house is mm forty five years old now and er the paint would never be as smooth as what mm is here is here in your office but i've just painted over it but i found that to go over a colour or over or over paper i've got to put an undercoat and i'm finding that i've got to put two top coats on have you found this <.>ev even on woodwork around the doors a good undercoat but er the <{><[>the first top coat <[>yes tut yeah still leaves signs of the undercoat <{><[>underneath <[>that's right yes i always two use two top coats you get a far better finish <&>17:00 <{><[>too it's much smoother glossier and er <[>yes right yeah yeah yeah no i always <{><[>always double top coat yes <[>and this sort of this sort of thing mm tut <{><[>aye <[>word aye and do you <.>th you know as far as actual going away holidays is concerned have you been up to <.>s to wanganui or has pat been up to waverley to see <{><[>her mum <[>pat has been up to waverley in fact pat's going this weekend again to see her mum um voc i won't go cos i'm working at <&>name of school this week we're appointing a principal tut oh right <{><[>i saw that job advertised <[>at <&>name of school yeah yes having interviews on saturday so no but pat'll pat'll probably go to waverley lot more schools seem to be interviewing people for jobs <{1><[1>during the during saturdays do you find this a more relaxing way of doing it i mean it's a serious job but is it more <{2><[2>relaxing <[1>mm sniffs mm mm <[2><.>i i think for principals' jobs because the the length of time that's involved see it can be up to an hour and a half to a in fact the <&>name of place for the <&>name of school job the the applicants who have been <.>s who have been shortlisted will be there for about two hours each yes <&>18:00 they'll be involved with presentation to staff grouping and part of the board is this um <{1><[1>something that's crept into <{2><[2>er <[1>for half an hour <[2>mm mm mm oh for top for big big school jobs yes yeah um so they've got a meeting with the chairperson first for quarter of an hour they've got a presentation for about a half an hour and then they'll have an interview a formal interview <{><[>for about an hour <[>mm could we go back to this um presentation i'm interested to hear about <{1><[1>this does this involve um tut a prewarned <{2><[2>presentation the school get a group of staff there seniors <{3><[3>um <.>sk skylies <[1>mm <[2>mm <[3>yeah yes yeah and the the person the prospective principal <,> talks to them <{><[>about what his vision for the school <[>yes mm yes <{><[>and in fact <.>th <.>that that's the really the question voc the vision you know what vision have you had <.>f what do <.>you vision do you have for <&>name of school five years time in other words where do you see <&>name of school in five years time <[>er yes <&>19:00 under your leadership mhm <{><[>and that's that's <[>tut and from that you get <{><[>a fair idea of the basis of that um <[>yeah mm mm of that person's thinking <{><[>and er <[>mm yes yes <{><[>oh <[>so it should be exciting oh although by the time <.>you many applicants for the job kevin yes a reasonable number yes mm mm tut had twenty applicants overall oh that's good heavens <{><[>er well hopefully the school authorities'll get <[>yeah yeah somebody to their liking <{><[>and how many at the have they shortlisted <[>right three yes three should <.>just three in the shortlist mhm <&>19:30 <&>end of sample
