<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>2:05 so i don't know er i mean it <.>h halfway through i was sort of um tut oh almost bored with it you <{><[>know and then it sort of <[>mhm mm yeah it <{><[>seemed very long that kind of story and one kept going back to big hunks of it <[>you know yes and it didn't evolve very far yeah yeah that's true but um laughs <,> now the other thing we can talk about is i did hear back from radio new zealand about <&>name of composition tanz and they turned it down oh yeah and that was martin devoy devoy who has said he would get in touch to talk about it but he hasn't oh yeah so that was that yes well be interesting <,> perhaps um we should ring him yeah i can't imagine that <,,> it it was er i mean it was probably just a way of explaining why yes rather than thinking of ways to do it <&>3:00 yes tut although you see he did <.>s the <.>nigh mm the night that he CAME yeah he said to me um something like um you know he didn't he didn't say oh we should broadcast this he said um we should do this again or something <.>that <{><[>as if <[>oh right well i suspect that the reason they'd have turned it down would be technical wouldn't it i mean they just think that the well the performance wasn't yeah great quite up to broadcast standard <{1><[1>and i thought that at the time and i just thought that the way as i said in my note one way round that would be to have say heke and me or <{2><[2>and you sort of talking about <[1>yeah <[2>yeah yes and just take each scene and perhaps describing <{><[>the setting and things to to make it put it in a context which <[>mm <,> yes yes clearly wasn't their normal yes whatever they consider their standard to be yeah anyway that's it <&>4:00 mm be interesting to see what <?>bitter calm</?> is like exactly it's getting a huge amount of publicity i <{><[>suppose just by virtue of it having been picked up by the festival <[>mm yeah yeah but er <{1><[1>but it's sort of i mean i can't help <{2><[2>laughs noticing the comparison because i mean <{3><[3>it seems as if i mean it's on a similar scale and <{4><[4>and is it <&>name <{5><[5>so i just <[1>word <[2>laughs <[3>mm <[4>mm <[5>i don't know about length it's probably quite a lot longer is it do you think <{><[>mm mm <[>i suspect with the chorus and yeah but <.>i i've never i heard it in the last festival in that concert performance did you no i was <{><[>away mm <[>no oh right and the vocal writing was um i mean it just <.>st didn't sound as though he knew where to put in yeah er a higher i mean a higher soprano singing quite fast narrative about top g just absurd yeah couldn't hear a thing yeah and um the chorus writing from i've heard from a couple of chorus people is apparently not too good but the <.>orche i think it's like a sort of orchestral work really yeah and that's where his <.>for that's his forte yeah <&>5:00 he's a <,,> good at that big sweep and the really dense <{><[>textured stuff <[>yes yeah oh it'll be interesting to hear it mm <,> but um tut well i think radio new zealand could do a lot worse than just commission a a recording of it <{><[>of of tanz <[>yeah that'd be good wouldn't it mm <,,> <{><[>because um <[>word <,,> i mean it wouldn't you know it's not that big a thing for them to do is it but er i don't know when did they last do anything on that kind of scale been a while yeah still um perhaps the <.>c composers' foundation or yes something arts council no not arts council wouldn't mm tut oh well we'll see <{><[>inhales and i told you about the thomas' enthusiasm <&>pronounced ensusiasm for distributing it overseas and things <[>yeah and then he went yeah backed <{><[>out <[>completely reversed his opinion a <&>6:00 week later inhales <{><[>laughs <[>yeah very odd typical thomas though i guess so i i just kind of i think it was sort of moralistic <&>electric appliance starts up reason yes yeah i'll shut the door <&>someone gets up and shuts door to cut out noise yes he's <.>a but i mean i i <&>door shuts not that i ever have much to do with thomas but i just find him completely unpredictable <{><[>you know he just <[>mm yeah oh he is really you don't know er which way he's gonna jump laughs yeah <.>i er that's you know i was quite it took me a long time to go round with the tape of it <,> i mean it was several months after <{1><[1>it had happened and he'd been expressing interest in hearing it and i just thought he wouldn't like the style of musical <{2><[2>language because it was kind of viennese <[1>yeah <[2>yes yeah um tut leanings but he didn't complain about that at all in fact he thought everybody who said it sounded like burgh burgh didn't know what they were talking <{1><[1>about so i mean and i agree really <{2><[2>that you'd only have to listen to some burgh <{3><[3>to hear the difference inhales but um but he took er offence to the <,> the way that new zealanders were portrayed essentially <[1>yeah <[2>yeah <[3>yeah yeah <&>7:00 laughs laughs <{><[>laughs <[>yeah maybe it was too close to the voc i mean it was kind of his family in a way i <{><[>suppose you could say <[>i guess so yes yeah rich farming certainly not mine <.>in in in that sense <{><[>laughs mm <[>no no well it's so far from being my family that i <{1><[1>and yet as you know i found it quite hard to BELIEVE <{2><[2>in the first place <[1>yeah i know <[2>mm right um tut that sort of behaviour could go on but i mean obviously i mean ludwig had plenty of <{><[>examples and word <[>yeah no i i i identified with the the whole thing quite strongly except for the kind of rich <,> veneer that was supposed to be there although it wasn't evident in that yeah way it was presented really except by implication but that up until act three i thought it was entirely plausible <{><[>laughs actually and then after that well we can go <.>in into the realm of theatre <[>yes yeah yeah yes <&>8:00 yes i must say when i eventually watched the um the video i did feel inhales really sorry that ludwig hadn't got the lighting the way he wanted <{><[>it i mean it did <[>mm looks <{><[>pretty bad <[>word it did show up all the cracks <{1><[1>in the in there and as for the red um tut sort of aura around the swastika <{2><[2>i mean that just seemed so <{3><[3>tacky <[1>yeah <[2>oh <[3>bit corny really <{><[>wasn't it <,> yeah <[>yeah <,> mm and it i mean <.>o on the video it didn't really look <,,> as it was meant to anyway i mean you could hardly believe that this was a freshly painted <{1><[1>thing thing on the door <{2><[2>it was a bit um <,> <{3><[3>projected image or something <{4><[4>you know <[1>mm mm <[2>that's right <[3>word <[4>yeah yeah yes i i that's why i i wasn't really rushing to give you a copy of it cos i knew that er cos you hadn't really seen it at all clears throat up till that point <{><[>had you <[>no well i mean you you sort of see it and you don't <{><[>you know it just sort of laughs <[>mm word not really taking in um you know yeah <&>9:00 what what's happening in a way um voc but um oh it was good to see it <{><[>but then of course again i mean i <,> went and watched it on clara's <.>m machine and and the other <.>g great pity of that was the the i mean the sound quality on the video was just <[>mm mm so bad that <{><[>i should have tried to synchronise it with the the tape or something you know <[>yep yeah that would be very difficult to do <{><[>but yeah no it's <.>ho it's okay on the super v h s but as soon it's as dubbed onto a standard one it <[>mm just <{><[>loses it <[>it disappears completely yeah and the dynamics are compressed and yeah and it's just fucking ghastly yeah laughs mm anyway yeah tut <,,> now what was our other topic there was something else i had in mind oh i know <{><[>have you been into that um little have i been asked you if you've been into that cafe up in kelburn yet <[>laughs no which one the one that used to be woodlands oh right <&>10:00 they've got um <,> a stereo system in there mm with these little speakers that are THAT big oh god laughs is it a bose one i <{><[>think it probably is <[>word yeah <{1><[1>have you heard it yes yes <{2><[2>brilliant that's right <[1>it's all white <[2>i liked it it's absolutely brilliant there's a bass <{><[>unit <[>that's right which just <{><[>sits on the wall somewhere <[>mm MM and then <{><[>the speakers <[>can be anywhere i think <{><[>it can be outside actually <[>yeah yeah word <{><[>and honestly you get <[>exhales laughs yeah <{1><[1>that's the latest thing <{2><[2>they've got a whole new series of those <[1>word <[2>mm yeah those ones going from relatively inexpensive up to enormously expensive and they seem to use the reflections off the wall in some particular way voc did you actually hear it in <{><[>operation <[>yes yeah he was playing some sort of mm <.>j jazz <{1><[1>in the background er it was sounded tremendous i <{2><[2>thought <[1>mm <[2>yeah inhales yes that might be the next investment no no both laugh i've thought that yeah if i needed a stereo i'd <.>je definitely look into that sort of thing simply because it's so disCREET yeah <,> <{1><[1>yes well i i thought a pair of those would go quite nicely in our sort of kitchen area you know <{2><[2>but word <[1>mm <&>11:00 <[2>oh right then you could extend from your own stereo for the other stereo out yeah <&>11:05 <&>section where participants talk about recording not transcribed <&>11:28 the meeting was good yesterday oh good <{1><[1>yeah yes it's um <,> seemed an awful lot to get through but <{2><[2>er <[1>mm <[2>mm yeah it was enormously long but <{1><[1>er <,> <.>s everything came out <{2><[2>fine i think <[1>yeah <[2>mm yeah <,> well I just hope that you know we're gonna get some some word on these secretarial positions <{1><[1>quickly cos er could get a bit DIRE if we're sort of <{2><[2>getting in to term time with just cath here <[1>mm mm <[2>that's right oh yeah cos <&>12:00 she's not all that familiar with macintoshes either <{><[>is she <[>no she's never worked with them before so she's learning all the way at yeah although i must say she's doing pretty well with that in <{1><[1>view of the fact that it's her first time on <{2><[2>one <[1>mm <[2>mm mm and um yeah she seems very bright and um yeah <{><[>after cindy <[>word on the phone <{><[>and that <[>that's right yeah she's GREAT at handling messages <{><[>and so on that's true <[>yes i had a little green little yellow stickers in my basket <{><[>all the time all <[>yes yes and she's really good about um sort of <,> giving people a good reason for why they can't talk to you at this moment you know <{><[>she doesn't er <[>mm just just to not here not give the impression that you're off at the beach <{><[>or something <[>laughs both laugh that's right <,> oh oh good laughs <,> well i will be at the beach hopefully laughs yes laughs yes oh well <{><[>last chance i guess <[>this is yeah well this is we haven't been north of paekak all summer gosh <&>13:00 and with relatives coming and yeah and my children staying yeah it's been a an about town sort of thing so <{1><[1>inhales <.>it exhales try to er we set aside this weekend but in fact i mean so many things have come up that i should have stayed here for <{2><[2>just incredible <[1>aha <[2>yeah yeah rehearsals for alistair's band yeah putting together the video <,> all day today <,> um bertie potter's birthday party oh and um <,> tut tennis <{><[>interclub laughs <[>oh yeah yes but anyway i was we were determined that we'd <{1><[1>actually go and simply everything would have to be shelved because martha gets very busy with lectures <{2><[2>and things <[1>yeah <[2>yes once we're in beginning of term yeah well even now she's <.>ha got things like inhales yeah new staff and yeah whole heaps yeah um this is it so <.>y are you going to paekak or are you going <&>14:00 further no we're going to go to er wanganui today yeah and look at a junk shop yeah then maybe go up the wanganui river or or the road that goes straight up to south of taupo oh yes <&>14:12
