<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>0:41 you gonna watch the game tomorrow night eh gonna watch the rugby tomorrow night tomorrow night um almost forgot all about it actually almost forgot all about it cos um cos i usually i i do something else on wednesday night i was thinking man something's not quite right i was supposed to be doing <.>some i was supposed to be <,> watching something tomorrow night <{1><[1>i didn't know what it was and then last night i got home my sister says oh i don't know i was talking to her about something and <,> somehow we got onto the bledisloe cup cos she works in a pub eh <{2><[2>so <[1>laughs yeah <&>1:00 <[2>oh yeah so er they get quite busy when the rugby's going yeah and um she never went she says oh don't worry about picking me up tomorrow night i said oh why's that she said oh cos you know we might be working quite late and so on so i said why's that she said the rugby voc eh? bledisloe cup on oh damn <{><[>inhales good one <[>yeah they got a big screen yeah oh they've got a couple of big screens there eh mm yeah been there a few times to watch the er the league and word <{><[>you know we just watch it there where she works <[>yeah yeah <.>i i'll probably watch it yeah i i don't know how they'll go <{><[>laughs <[>laughs oh no i'm not <.>too i'm not too worried about it eh <{><[>cos i'm i missed the last test <[>nah <&>2:00 oh well i just word lot easier i'd say yeah it wasn't didn't miss much clears throat mm i mean i saw the first two from you know after that i thought well you know won the series and i'd better things to do on the on the day of the last test anyway yeah although it's probably better watching the french games much better games oh true eh yeah not so many mistakes yeah well <{><[>laughs that's debatable laughs <[>laughs but i'm not you know i i don't know just seemed better rugby yeah <,,> tut but it's hard on them these days eh cos you know it's they've played the french springboks and now they've played the aussies all within you know about <{><[>six months <[>all in the same season yeah well <{><[><.>s <.>s seven not even in er <[>oh <,,><&>3 no that's that's quite a hard programme they've got set for them this year i couldn't understand actually cos i mean like <&>clears <&>3:00 throat if you look at the australian programme they've only played what is it oh italy <,> and <{><[>western samoa and that was a that was a drubbing <[>western samoa laughs that wasn't <{><[>laughs <[>and that was just they got wasted yeah that wasn't i mean you would expect that you know western samoa to be the be tough as rock but no well they'd just beaten wales i mean wales went through <{><[>um <[>yeah that's right <,,> <{><[>and <[>wales were five nations' champs oh yeah true <,> laughs oh the french are always up and down mm <,> so i think there's a bit of discrepancy in um laughs <,> in how the programmes were er planned <,,> <{><[>and so <[>it's funny eh cos <,> the the club season's just finished yeah <{><[>that's right <[>and now they've got to go off and do all their provincial stuff yeah i know <{><[>it's crazy eh <[>yeah and most most teams've have only played one or <&>4:00 two provincial games at the most yeah well you saw what happened to otago in the weekend eh yeah yeah got beaten by counties cos all their all blacks are away laughs all their top players <,,><&>4 yeah well that's <,,> that's they a lot a lot of teams are like that unless you're like auckland where you got a lot of <,> a lot of better players that that er you don't get hit so much by <,> big gags yeah i think they've just got more depth than auckland though yeah that usually <.>s usually seems to be the case <,> a lot more depth than anyone else <,> in their sports <,> more to choose from as well <,,><&>3 mm another thing too is that the aussies have got is that they've really only got two <,> two key provinces oh yeah that's right eh and it's it's almost it's almost like they've got an equivalent with state of origin yeah well that's right eh and those two teams are really really good and whereas if you look <&>5:00 at new zealand rugby is that <.>ma we've got so many small compared to them small <.>cl <.>pr provinces that even even in south africa you've got <,> what natal western province orange free state big BIG states yeah and it must just sort of raise the game clears throat oh i don't know i suppose um <,,> i suppose it's got its advantages you know the <.>aus what the australians have got <{1><[1>you know but then again i i suppose in a lot of respects they're quite envious of new zealand <,> because we've got more we have got more depth <,> well i think they make <,> <{2><[2>what they HAVE got what they HAVE got they turn into real quality players <[1>yeah <[2>what they HAVE well it it must just still not be you know if if you're in north harbour here and you want to play auckland you don't have to laughs hop on the plane for seven hours to get <{><[>there <[>yeah that's right too <,,> and that that's got to be one thing for new zealand rugby mm cos in even winfield cup clive tresser <&>6:00 word voc yeah and they you know and they go off to perth and do exhibition games out there and <{><[>stuff like that <.>m <,> all over the place just to promote the game <[>yeah yeah specially travelling between like <,> new south wales and and queensland i mean that's not TOO bad <,,> and there's not much difference between driven from auckland see yeah <,> but i'm sure too they've played games in adelaide and yeah they have there <.>m adelaide melbourne <,> and perth <,,><&>6 <&>drinks yeah big places have you have you been watching winfield cup lately oh i saw it on the weekend <,> i sort of haven't kept too much you know <,> haven't really kept track of it this year <,,> yeah but i saw it on the weekend though yeah i noticed last year i <.>r i <.>f i really followed it real close yeah but then i you know i could always i'd sleep in the next day <{><[>didn't matter if i <&>7:00 stayed up till one i could still arrive <[>yeah that's right eh yeah with no early classes this year you've got to get up at six to you're a working boy now <{><[>laughs <[>yeah it's pretty tough for those those who <{><[>watched it <[>that's what happens when you work yeah yeah <,> oh no i used to used to word you know follow it quite um quite closely <,> yeah really closely but um <,,> not this year mind you i should do cos i mean i've got quite a few mates who're coming out for a couple of <,> boosts our score yeah yeah guys like steven kennelly word playing with world cup? yeah <,> western and southerns <,> you know the kiwi yeah <{><[>he was in the kiwis here <[>yeah yeah we were in the same class together yeah well i <{><[>i word <[>he's younger than me laughs i <,,> i know um gavin hill's older brother oh yeah yeah yeah really well he was in the same class as me and gavin <,> back in those days was just a little squirt oh yeah yeah yeah and um so obviously he's grown up <,> quite a bit since then yeah well that's like that's like steven he used to be he was always big <,,> but now he's <&>8:00 just BIG big <{><[>i mean he's a real pig's <&>pronounced as peeg's trotter now it's just <,,> oh last time i saw him eh i just couldn't get over how tall he'd gotten and how big you know how wide he was <[>yeah yeah cos he was always a big guy but man <,,> he's just a monster now <,> and then compared to the rest of them i mean he's just average <,> in size <,,> i don't know i think you know maybe it's <,> if they do a lot of hard trains a lot of weights in their late teens they just take off yeah i mean it has a lot to do with their training and nutrition those sorts of things yeah <,,><&>4 cos they reckon you know like all all the top bodybuilders <,> start off really early start off early teens oh i wouldn't say i wouldn't say that um <&>drinks but like bodybuilding's not a young man's sport actually <,,> you see a lot of those guys <,> um <,> a lot of top bodybuilders are <&>9:00 their midthirties <,,> there's very few of them that are <.>st you know still in their twenties <,> yeah or early twenties i mean you've got guys <{><[>who start off real early know like in their teens i mean at school you know <[>yeah but once <,> but <{><[>once they they get big and then <.>th as they get older they go for shapes and <[>but once yeah yeah <{1><[1>yeah oh no <.>tha yeah that's true yeah <,> but like um <,> some of those guys don't <.>sta there's one guy <,> now what's his name um <,,> albert beckolls i think his name i think that's his name he's um he started doing bodybuilding hadn't even touched weights he started doing it when he was about er thirty thirty five or <{2><[2>something <,> and um he got into competitive bodybuilding by the time he was in his forties <[1>definition <[2>yeah yeah and he's round about fifty now <,> but even by the time he entered competitive bodybuilding he was considered too old yeah you know? MAN <,> to have a body like his <,> <&>10:00 yeah <,> yeah about that age i mean that's incredible even even arnold schwarzenegger i mean he's about forty seven yeah and he's still got a awesome body man laughs voc but they they reckon in in the s a s the ideal age <,> for <,> for fitness is between twenty eight and thirty two yeah <.>tha that's your peak mm once once you've passed that you're on your way down and once you're building up to that and when you're at that age <,> theoretically you might <,> you can you know your body's at the stage where it can take the most hammering <,> and if you know if you have to do a long distance run or yeah or or run through the desert or something <{><[>like that that your body at then should be able to <,> hack it <[>laughs yeah and that that's sort of the <,> the iron man stage <,> of your life i believe it eh yeah <.>i it sounds true i believe it eh <,,><&>3 cos um i mean you've <&>11:00 just got to look at a guy like carl lewis <,> and linford christie yeah they're in their <,> they're about thirty thirty two sort of thing and they've had their <.>p they're at their peak yeah mm yeah i mean they were <,> creating records when they were in their twenties and that but <,> they've really hit their peak now <,> in their thirties <,> man that's just that's incredible eh everyone's saying no they're too they're too old they're too old and they won't <,> <{><[>they won't last <[>no well if they just they just must have it up top eh a lot of it's psychological as well yeah <.>g well who's that other guy that was it linford christie <&>pronounced as crispy they were having on the t v the other day and he was saying look i'm gonna win i'm gonna <{><[>break the record <[>oh british guy yeah yeah linford <{><[>christie <[>it's it's it's gonna <{><[>happen <[>positive attitude <{><[>eh <[>yeah and he just <,,> what about i say go hell or something like that <{><[>i might be able to get close to it <[>yeah yeah well what they do is i mean <,> that's the difference between a lot of er athletes now is you it's not <,> so much the physical but i mean that's that's a big part but it's <.>me it's really the um the mental and you know the attitude that they have yeah i mean that's one of the reasons i reckon <&>12:00 that a lot of new zealanders you know a lot of new zealand athletes don't really reach <,,> um well they don't make use of the potential they've got because they <.>st they still think in that mindframe well you know we'll <.>t give it our best go yeah okay or else they're seen as being too cocky <{><[>but the thing is it's a <.>loa it's a lies because like over the states and <,> over overseas like in er america and british <,> the british athletes i mean i think it's just confidence <,> i mean yeah obviously some do get cocky and <[>yeah yeah get big heads but i mean it is it's confidence and it's a way of psyching out the opponents and also a way of psyching themselves up <,> and they use mental visualisation eh yeah well it's it's the thing i <.>r i'll never forget that the dream team <,> went to the olympics mm and <,> they they had the gold they might've <.>s known <.>th they knew it they <.>w <,> they were just SO far above any other team mm <&>13:00 and they but psychologically they had it yeah well <{><[>that's right <[>and the opponents knew <,> <{><[>that that look if they <.>g if we get half half their points or we something like that we're it's an amazing thing <[>mm yeah well that was the thing i mean like <,,> when the dream team did go i mean they were a <.>g really good team everyone knew it but because you know they those sort of guys who were really confident about the way they played yeah and i mean <.>tha that's half of their performance is their their confidence and their <{><[>energy <[>yeah yeah i mean everyone else is just like <{><[>laughs <[>i mean they were just completely psyched out eh yeah yeah well they think man these guy are <,> tut are being paid so much that they must be almost superhuman yeah and <.>w i mean also you know having seen them on t v and the word i got word to be like gods and that sort of thing <,> i mean you ANYbody would you know you'd you'd be psyched out straight away if you knew you were going against <,> what everyone was saying was who's the best in the world if you got someone like michael jordan and they played an an hour of his videos of his goals and what he can <{1><[1>do stuff like that they'd just freak out they'd be dead before we go on <{2><[2>laughs <[1>yeah word word <&>14:00 <[2>we're going out nerves okay guys we're we're here <,,> let's see if we can score at least half as <,> many points as them and that'd mean we're good word ash's have gone all out and some of those teams actually you know <,> like er what's that team romania? was it romania <{><[>mm <[>yeah they had some good players in there <,> and they weren't too psyched out cos some of their players were actually <,> from the n b a yeah mm yeah they had some good players on the team but <.>th yeah they didn't care eh they just went out and they they gave it their best bang well that that's what happened in the world cup after a lot of those americans cos the american team did a lot better than what everyone thought <&>drinks mm next minute half their players get offered contracts i know eh yeah <,,><&>3 so it obviously has its spinoffs oh i don't yeah cos the american team in the world cup they had they were playing in front of the home crowd eh and that <.>r that that really lifted them yeah <&>15:00
