be good to have him down trouble is he said laughs he'll bring all his mates around <{2><[2>oh i thought oh yeah laughs <[1>mm <[2>laughs you're gonna have a full house laughs i thought <{><[>oh my gosh yeah i guess so <[>that'd be good for you after so long <.>w just with you <{><[>two and now <[>mm there's a well there's a a cheeky er old boy er word old boy on the boat too he said to matt tell your mother to start cooking <{><[>NOW NOW he reckons <[>laughs oh all that <{><[>delicious cooking all the cakes and everything <[>oh jeez oh i'll <{><[>say <&>4:00 <[>all those things they miss while they're on the boat yeah oh <{><[>he was a good boy laughs i don't mind if he comes and yeah no it's good to have him and his mates come round <[>oh LOVELY one so you would say there's quite a few you know they're all mates on these boats mm <{1><[1>yes and a lot of well i <{2><[2>i think i think yeah <{3><[3>they're recruiting for young maori men er the services eh you know like the air force the army in particular i think <[1>oh right <[2>maori <[3>because they're maori <{1><[1>mm <[1>and the navy they seem to um um sort of really er perhaps go to those <.>s sorts of er employment because it's so secure you <{1><[1>know it's just they don't have to <{2><[2>worry about board and um you <{3><[3>know those sorts of <[1>right <[2>mm <[3>the amenities are good yeah and they get a good training and you know they become tut um some of them you know <.>do er join particularly to do an apprenticeship you know like the the one of the most um popular um courses in the in the navy is the <&>5:00 um chef's course <{><[>you know gee that one's always yeah <[>oh right you learn how to how to cook mm yeah they really enjoy that well matt's always been into engineering so um <{1><[1>you know he's got a really good training in that <{2><[2>eh <[1>mm <[2>that right he should have um no trouble getting a job when he comes out or one of those <{1><[1>friends might be a good chef yeah <{2><[2>we're going to count on that <,> well yeah oh wonderful laughs <[1>mm <[2>well hopefully <,> yeah i'll have to say to <&>matt yeah bring one of the cooks home you'll be sorry they're <{><[>only staying for the weekend laughs <[>mm yeah but <{1><[1>see that that's a good sort of thing eh with matt being a diver too he's a <{2><[2>you know a navy diver <[1>yeah <[2>mm mm um when they go off on their trips they go diving for kaimoana <{1><[1>and things like that and he goes in to see the cook and he says oh <{2><[2>yum they're <,> cooking up these pauas or <{3><[3>whatever you know fish <{4><[4>oh gosh <{5><[5>yes yeah they're really well off <[1><.>kaimo wow <[2>laughs <[3>oh wow <[4>voc <[5>good one mm right <,> <{><[>good one <[>but um well the one good thing about him going away is er the pay <&>6:00 they get a a quite a er hike in their pay while he's away mm <{><[>mm <[>from home but still it isn't <{><[>good mm <[>yeah it's the it's the wife eh <{><[>and the and the kids <[>yeah that's right yeah <{><[><.>and and er <[>did you say some of those other ones were married too <{><[>with families oh <[>oh yeah yeah and they're all going through this <{1><[1>you know separation thing <{2><[2>in fact i was reading an article in i think it was new idea you know <{3><[3>that women's weekly last night <[1>family <[2><&>sighs <[3>right right mm mm about um <,> tut this navy family and how this woman er the wife is finds it REALLY hard to <{1><[1>adjust to his going away and how naughty their child <{2><[2>is building up to <{3><[3>that you know while the dad is away she just <{4><[4>cries so much and she throws these tantrums in her special she was wondering how could she cope with it <{5><[5>you know she said she tries to um er not you know be too strict on the kid and yet she <.>s finds that you know she <.>s has to smack her and <[1>yeah <[2>yeah mm <[3>clears throat <[4>mm <[5>mm mm oh you know things <{1><[1>like that <{2><[2>to pull her out of that um naughty behaviour <&>7:00 <[1>well <[2>yeah probably <.>the the child can feel her stress too <{><[>and hers i reckon so eh from the mother <,> goes down to the child and and they react in a different way <[>yeah i would say so see this this yeah that's what happens with er lynette and yes mm yeah that's right because she's missing her husband <{><[>yeah i can imagine all that <[>mm the child missing her father <{1><[1>oh it's it's not good <{2><[2>i don't know how we can overcome that <[1>yeah <[2>no no i couldn't live like that <{><[>laughs i just couldn't <[>oh heck i'll say no well <{1><[1>even then that's why i take my hat off to lynette i said <{2><[2>oh i couldn't yeah i couldn't um put up with those <[1>mm yeah <[2>for sticking it out yeah mm long long trips away where's lynette from she's from wanganui and <{1><[1>she's a very bright girl ae <{2><[2>ae and when she you know her family are really from her dad's from rotoma <,> <{3><[3>a thompson thompson yeah quite a big family from there but she's lived um in wanganui because that's where her mum's from <[1>oh really a maori <[2>mm <[3>mm mm mm mhm um all her life and she went to wanganui <.>wangan yeah wanganui high school she <{><[>was head girl there <[>mm <&>8:00 wow very bright you know she um er speak in the korimako oh <{><[>right right yeah even when she was in school mm mm <[>speech competitions she's very bright yeah she's er she's done law mm and she was the legal advisor for er ronnie burch right you know <{1><[1>when when he was yeah <{2><[2>race relations officer yeah mm <{3><[3>but um <[1>yeah race relations <[2>oh good <[3>so she didn't have a problem getting a job <{><[>i suppose when her when er word <[>no no but <.>sh she found that particular job very stressful <{1><[1>it's like she doesn't think she'd like to go back into it you know <{2><[2>cos she was always dealing with <{3><[3>problems <[1>mm <[2>right <[3>people and problems yeah <{><[>never really feels happy eh <[><.>exactl that's <{><[>right never really being happy <[>and what does that <.>kind life yeah when she's got that kind of life to live <{1><[1>and then having all those problems on <{2><[2>top of it you can imagine it building up <[1>yeah <[2>that's right mm wow <{><[>i said to her gosh you know <.>sh she is so bright <[>mm mm that she should really get into criminal criminal law <{1><[1>and er i you know i said you've got the ability to be a judge <{2><[2>you know to be the first maori woman judge i <&>9:00 reckon but <{3><[3>she said oh i'm really not into crime you <{4><[4>know and all of that so i don't know <.>w what she'll do she's going to look for a parttime job she's been back to the <.>relat <&>pronounced as relace er <{5><[5><.>rel yeah the office to work parttime on and off when they've um had someone away <{6><[6>um <[1>mm <[2>mm mm <[3>gosh <[4>laughs mm <[5>relations right <[6>even when jack's been there jack <{><[>hill right oh yeah <[>yeah yes yeah and she's come down to work for him down here too mm er not <{><[>not all that long ago <[>what happens to her baby when that happens <{><[>to rahera <[>well she's she's her <{1><[1>she's lucky she's got er a lot of her whanau in auckland <{2><[2>you know her sisters who are not um <{3><[3>you know with young families and they've been good enough to look <{4><[4>after rahera <{5><[5>mm <[1>sneezes <[2>right <[3>mm <[4>after <[5>must be hard <{><[>though <[>oh yes it is but <{1><[1>that'll take her away for how long at a <{2><[2>time <[1>cos um <[2>well when she worked for um um er jack hill <{><[>this last time she was here for a week <[>mm mm and that was quite hard mm you know if i was free it would've been better that er you know she was <{><[>staying with us <&>10:00 <[>she could've found someone else mm but um yeah we couldn't really look after the baby <{><[>coughs <[>mm yeah yeah it's a different <.>worl life now eh mm yes mm well the thing <{><[>was eh <[>they're so dependent you have to get you have to go to work to keep <{><[>going yeah <[>she <.>s the thing is though she said she she vowed she would never marry a navy <{1><[1>person because she got two sisters <{2><[2>married to navy people yeah <{3><[3>and they and she could see that this was happening to <{4><[4>them and she said no i'm not gonna marry a <{5><[5>navy man and well she met matt on the on the ferry on the auckland <{6><[6>ferry they were catching the same ferry on and off you know and they're sort of looking at each other and <{7><[7>matt said oh gee she's nice <{8><[8>he says i want to get to know her <{9><[9>so he introduced himself and they'd talk away on the ferry you know backwards and forwards from <{10><[10>devonport <,> and er yeah then <[1>laughs <[2>married to navy <[3>and and it looks like <[4>to them <[5>inhales <[6>awesome mm same mm right <[7>laughs <[8>yeah <[9>oh wow that <[10>mm and then she ends up marrying a <{><[>navy working man yeah <[>well that's right er and and er he told me about it <&>11:00 cos <.>c he's been a bit naughty in the past you know he's er not secure and i mean being playing the field <{><[>oh i used to give him the word about that <[>oh i know mm <{><[>mm <[>but um then he met lynette and he said oh mum i really you know really fancy <{1><[1>her so i said to him well i said the way to go about it is to be um to to be like er um the old fashioned you know how the <{2><[2>old fashioned men used to court <[1>oh that's nice yeah <[2>mm right right er the woman that they were after to be chivalrous you <{1><[1>know and take her flowers and <,> out to lunch and <{2><[2>that's he did he'd <{3><[3>roll up at her office in his uniform <{4><[4>cos he looks quite <{5><[5>quite neat in his er officer's uniform and bunch of flowers and out to take lyn there to lunch <{6><[6>she goes it was lovely NO no that's what i mean voc <[1>yeah laughs <[2>voc <[3><.>yeah <[4>yeah <[5>neat oh wow voc right <[6>but he he he wasn't embarrassed by taking a bunch of flowers cos usually a lot of maori men don't like that <{><[>eh take flowers with them <[>i know i said that's the way to do it <{1><[1>laughs and he said and i listened to you mum <{2><[2>laughs yeah which is good but <{3><[3>er yes i <.>c i can see though she needs to be using her brain you know she's <{4><[4>not gonna be just a mum at home <[1>word <[2>oh nice <&>12:00 one mm <[3>mm <[4>mm mm um she needs something to really get her going maybe when her her <.>b <{><[>her baby starts starts school then she'll be a bit freer to <[>an opportunity yeah yeah probably mm to go out and and <{><[>look for a career <[>yeah mm rahera <{><[>goes to kohanga at the moment <[>mm mm and er she was doing a <,> a sort of a parttime job she said it was her <.>b it was called her bun run oh right <{><[>right what was that <[>yeah she was just delivering <{1><[1>buns to to restaurants and <{2><[2>and and dairies <{3><[3>oh she HATED it <{4><[4>laughs but she said it was some money <{5><[5>you know yeah and the good thing about it is <{6><[6>you know it didn't have any stress <{7><[7>laughs yeah and she could do it when <.>r while rahera was at <{8><[8>er kohanga yeah <[1>buns oh right <[2>good one <[3>mm <[4>did she laughs <[5>it was a job mm mm <[6>got her out of the house <[7>yeah and got her out of the house yeah <[8>kohanga which kohanga did she go to oh i can't <{1><[1>remember word no no <{2><[2>no <.>dev they live in auckland in <&>13:00 devonport yeah <[1>not just one over the shore <[2>oh she's in auckland eh auckland yeah so she'd have to use wanganui yeah yeah and <.>i i <{1><[1>don't know what her er which kohanga <{2><[2>she's at <[1>mm <[2>right mm but it's lovely because you know well look at her eh she just looks like a pakeha <{><[>with <[>tut yeah with her red reddish <{><[>blonde hair and oh <[>reddish hair mm great they named her after my sister oh and because they <.>n they liked the name and because with this <{1><[1>red hair my sister's got red hair <{2><[2>too you see they they reckoned oh yes that's a real rahera that one <{3><[3>laughs <[1>mm <[2>mm <[3>yes she does too look at her yeah beautiful photo of her and she can beat her nanny and auntie to speak maori yeah? <{><[>laughs <[>oh yes my sister cos she was brought up um tut when my dad went to war mm um my mother was working she was milking cows on our on our <{><[>farm <[>farm right and um she er <.>m sort of adopted out um two two in the family <{><[>my older sister rahera <&>14:00 and er my younger one er until you know my dad was supposed to come back from the war <[>mm mm well she was working at the farm and so there were only two of us with her and she used to take us to the cowshed every day i suppose it was a bit much taking four kids <{><[>to the cowshed every day and doing word morning and night <[>wow that's morning and night inhales so um one auntie had one girl and another auntie who they were pakeha people mm er took rahera well when it came time and my dad was killed ae word um she went back you know <.>to to get these two back but they were you know <{1><[1>those two aunties said no they couldn't part with <{2><[2>them so she let them have them and they'd just come and have holidays with us <[1>wouldn't give them oh oh <[2>part mm mm it was really quite <{1><[1>sad in a way no no <{2><[2>one older and one younger <{3><[3>mm but she's been learning hard to speak maori <{4><[4>and and er she's trying to teach her moko too <[1>they're both older than you <[2>younger they <[3>wow <[4>mm mm mm <&>15:00 which is lovely i mean she can understand maori really <{1><[1>well but she <{2><[2>can't speak it no <[1>right <[2>just speak it mm <&>15:03 <&>section not transcribed <&>23:08 what about <{1><[1>weekend and for two reasons one i'm going to do a beauty break <{2><[2>laughs i rung her last night <[1>oh yes yeah <[2>oh good yeah ae word word word bring them <{1><[1>back another day i took them back in case i needed to do one last night <[1>tut oh good yeah okay i forgot yeah mm and i spoke to kathryn just to make sure i said we'll be about an hour <{><[>to to go through this beauty break and then she said oh she'd rather do that than have this meeting yeah <[>right oh yeah but <{1><[1>er yeah we're going to do the both <{2><[2>then probably have dinner with them then go home <[1>okay <[2>mm yeah <{><[>ae mm <[>and yeah we'll do that for an hour and then the other part of the meeting is to do with their family land mm you know at one stage there when the maori affairs corporated all the land and called it a block <&>24:00 yes yes well they've their their family've actually got <,> um all their part has been put into this rangitikei block mm and they want to bring it out again and have it just as the whanau and and just worry about their own immediate <{1><[1>voc mm oh <{2><[2>yeah <[1>immediate farm <[2>instead of having <.>t all these other bits hanging on and then <,> i think they may be <.>cl more clear cut because everything really on that on that rangitikei block belongs to the town <{><[>and then they've got the woolshed is on their their property the the er dips the yards <[>mm mm and all the other places haven't got it and they seem to be carrying oh <{><[>yes yes mm <[>all the risks you know and they feel as if now that the family have shown a a a bigger interest in their land mm they want to get it back and then try and have someone from their own whanau as a manager yeah well <{><[>they should do that'd be excellent <[>yeah that sort of thing so this is and of course kathryn's the lawyer mm <{><[>yes wow so she what what's her relationship <[>in the family so um and her her grandfather <&>25:00 mm is wally's father's brother oh yeah so <{><[>she's close to you <[>so she's she's a niece mm niece to wally mm very close mm yeah and and they're all interested in their <{1><[1>in their property word there's thousands of <{2><[2>acres there <,> yeah word <[1>mm <[2>well it's good that she's got those skills eh to help to direct us to well she's helped us quite a <{1><[1>bit actually kathryn <{2><[2>because even our own one on the green side and they had a translator up on our hill <[1>mm <[2>mm yeah and when when we first got the letter from the energy board in gisborne they wanted to pay us ten cents a year inhales for the rent of it <{1><[1>word yes word and then we said oh wasn't that a bit poor <{2><[2>you know paying that much so <{3><[3>they changed it and said oh well they'll pay us a dollar for the whole <{4><[4>year for the use of the to going up to the <{5><[5>transmitter and using it and we had to get kathryn on the go <,> and we actually got it up to two hundred fifty dollars a year <[1>wow ridiculous eh <[2>laughs <[3>ae <[4>yeah <[5>yes mm mm which is more reasonable yes <{><[>mm <[>and now we've got broadcasting and telecom's wanting to use it yeah <&>26:00 so we've got to <{><[>negotiate again <[>so that's right <{><[>what <[>for those ones mm mm to pay their rent or whatever voc <{><[>but i'm SO glad that <[>and what about the road and that that went <{><[>up did they do that too <[>yeah well the road well the road was already there but it it it <{><[>the keeping of <.>th of the road they wanted us the family to do it <[>oh yeah mm mm tut and we <{1><[1>don't even use the <{2><[2>jolly road we've had all these sorts of things to do she <{3><[3>actually you know <[1>exhales <[2>yeah for goodness' sake <[3>mm mm presided she actually i paid her fare to go to gisborne mm to be at the court <,> <{><[>hearing <[>good yes and they got such a shock <{1><[1>that we have got maori lawyers and you know we that's something we're going to have to stand up for <{2><[2>our rights now yeah <{3><[3>so <[1>to yeah that's right <[2>mm excellent <[3>oh dear it's lovely oh well i suppose we'd <{1><[1>better get back to work eh <{2><[2>laughs you know ae <[1>word
