<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>0:55 tut what are some other topical issues like inhales there's the treaty is there anything <&>1:00 else you could say about treaty what about sealords or stuff <,> sniffs they like well i mean they might not know too much about it mm inhales they probably won't know much about haumapuhia either <{><[>but that's what they could ask laughs <[>laughs <{><[>that's true um <[>laughs that's why ko wai to ingoa is a safe bet <{><[>laughs <[>laughs what about haere ki te marae that sort of questions from that i thought we'd sort of exhausted their <{><[>knowledge really in the test no hea no hea koe <[>yeah pretty boring really that's true laughs NO no hea <,,> no hea WHO who's where's someone from tut um they won't know te puea or um hoani waititi <{><[>yet will they <[>i've got te puea in here anyway though tut oh okay no hea um <,,><&>3 um <,> i'm trying to think of some famous maori person no hea au and then it can be aroha kara oh <.>k as kara <&>2:00 kara or danny <{><[>i mean they don't know where is kara from <[>um laughs i don't know laughs no idea <,,> no hea koe <,,> no i think it should be someone else someone that they should know <{><[>word <[>doesn't necessarily have to be in this order though it could be someone overseas even where is <,> someone from keanu reeves laughs <,> laughs just sprung to mind <{1><[1>laughs actually he's been springing to mind rather a lot lately <{2><[2>laughs <[1>laughs <[2>laughs yeah yeah <,,> <{><[>who was it that i was talking to <.>l oh tut um <,,> what's his name you know at the gym <[><&>sighs rick <{><[>no <[>no at the gym that i was trying to set you up with oh um hemi hemi <{><[>um he was going to speed last night <[>laughs <&>3:00 oh yeah and i said to him you won't get the same pleasure as i got from it i'm <{><[>sure but it's a really good movie laughs <[>laughs laughs talking about setups oh i'm getting sick of it man um sam said to me after land today oh so rachel who're you going to the ball with and i said um why laughs she said because i've got someone for you to go with i said i'm going with jonathan davis laughs she said oh i've got this really gorgeous nephew and i want him to meet you laughs laughs i said well bring him along anyway laughs yeah bring him along cos we got to <{><[>sell the the tickets <[>laughs yeah it <{><[>was funny <[>oh right <,> <{><[>tut oh <[>yeah but oh it's getting a bit tiresome now what has she been trying to set you up oh everyone i mean just over the last couple of years everyone seems to have a perfect cousin or friend or mate or <,> <{><[>friend's friends <[>tut well hone has got some pretty perfect looking cousins <{><[>actually we just got get them here <[>laughs i've seen the photos yeah laughs laughs yeah tut but <,,> <{><[>hemi i thought was a good score but <,> initially but not now <[>yeah <&>4:00 no oh and just nothing happened anyway really so <&>something falls down oh shit no worries yeah well i'm concerned about stanley eh are you yeah because you know he's acting like nothing's wrong and he failed <.>i miserably in that test eh he pretends eh yeah oh and he and he acts REALLY onto it when he like he was preparing his um tut his his legal stuff you know i was sitting there <.>w having a coffee and um <,> and he was acting like he was really into it you know <.>se searching out the issue <,,> appearances <{><[>it seems like <[>well he might be okay with law but just with maori he's not coping voc find that hard to believe though yeah yeah i think anyone that's failing so miserably probably isn't doing so well in anything else either <,> but yeah you never know mm <{1><[1>i don't know what his marks are for law eh so i <,> <{2><[2>i couldn't tell <[1>laughs <&>5:00 <[2>no no idea <,> yeah <,> but i guess he's <.>n he's only fooling himself really but i think you should say something to him because there's no point in him getting a fail and he will get a fail <,> for one oh two mm yeah you're right just being a chicken <.>an and i guess i have to talk to him tut well i mean there's no obligation for you to actually say anything because he hasn't really failed terms <.>ei oh did you have a look at the course outline to see if no <{><[>i'll have a look now <[>there is any any mark requirement <,,> yeah oh i can't remember i'm sure i would have specified it but <&>ruffling of papers for two seconds word you go no no it <.>would word <{><[>they're in the <[>word word it would be in the um <,,> oh okay a minimum of twenty marks of a possible forty <,,> oh no nothing about the tests oh <,> okay so a total of twenty marks out of possible forty for the internal assessment oh that's wrong though it's a <.>t <.>c <.>t total of <&>6:00 thirty marks for the out of the possible SIXTY <,,> shit so it's sixty percent internally assessed isn't it yeah and so i got that wrong anyway <{><[>laughs oops <[>laughs yeah like really <{><[>onto it <[>laughs oh shit eh it is eh yeah it's sixty percent internal and forty percent exam and you still make them sit a three hour exam you cow laughs <{1><[1>yeah laughs i did think about that though <{2><[2>i did say <[1>laughs <[2>they were complaining to me about all the assessment and stuff and i said <{><[>well it's not kataraina <[>hey who was complaining i've heard about four or five people in the last week this week saying it in the marae <.>d you know i'll wander round and they'll be like man there's heaps of work for one oh two all this assessment and we got this noho and then we've got maori rongonui and we just had a test and inhales set a should an exam and <{1><[1>it's like well kataraina didn't actually make those rules that's traditional <{2><[2>laughs <[1><&>sighs <[2>laughs oh well maybe i could <.>ma be more lenient <,> oh doesn't matter oh well not for this year <&>7:00 anyway tut the balls are already in motion tut yeah i don't <{><[>know <[>and they're pretty much finished it unless you cancel he maori rongonui but don't know what difference that'll make <&>inhales through teeth laughs and it'll be twenty marks out of a possible <{><[>forty anyhow can't do that i don't think tut but i was just thinking maybe they just do the oral component or the <[>laughs and not the written <,,> yeah less marking <.>s oh but and they're doing the oral exams though so maybe just do a written and not oral though the idea was to have them do more oral than as much oral as possible in this <,> course so that they practise their oral <,> you know okay but i'm just thinking i do i do appreciate that there's a lot of work i mean just for the chapters there's heaps <{><[>eh <[>mm tut to do their class work and then there is a fair bit of assessment <,> tut but they are pretty lazy too man <{><[>laughs but i guess it's it's comparing it with other one hundred level papers <,> you know it's a it's a fair bit <[>yeah <&>8:00 yeah when you're doing one two three as well yeah like who was it that came to see me oh rodger laughs rodger um had to er <,> to get off this sunday of the noho marae so that he um could <,> <{><[>do some work <[>word an assignment or something yeah <{><[>oh he looked quite stressed <[>did you <.>t did you tell him that the sunday wasn't really that much anyway yeah i said i didn't mind actually if he didn't come <.>oh but i've been selective in who i've said that to yeah but um that it was okay if he after the po whakangahau after all was completed then he could go but um just thinking now i need to um make sure that they tell their tutors cause they'll have allocated work <{><[>and that their tutors know what's happening <[>tut yeah but i think it should be okay but courtesy though eh yeah mm perhaps <{><[>they do anyway <[>if we can if we can remember that kind of thing sure but if not <,,> <{><[>don't stress too much <[>mm <&>9:00 tut <{><[>i mean the work that there is involved i mean even if there are just ten people doing it even if the same ten did it all weekend it wouldn't really be too much i split it up split it up pretty evenly <[>i <.>s mm mm they're generally either preparing <.>a voc or and serving a whole meal and like there's the tut sort of five meals basically that there are mm um although i don't think i've allocated anyone for sunday breakfast can you remember from those lists yeah i did saturday breakfast but i just clicked now that they needed sunday breakfast cos you'd have to prepare that on the saturday night who would prepare it on the saturday night you'd need <.>so a group to just come in and just you know open up all the cans and what have you um to have everything ready to go and then <{><[>it's the group <[>who's on supper <,> tut er i didn't think there was gonna be one the powhanga <.>h basically just help <{><[>yourselves you know just word <[>oh shit yeah there would be oh we'll set it up like yeah that can just be the people that are working there you reckon it's easy enough to do i <{><[>mean we could get up and i could just say to someone you fellas go and do it <[>supper's fine yeah <&>10:00 mm i remember when i did that one oh two noho marae there was a lot of power involved in it eh mm especially when i had noone helping me i mean not just the power like going crazy but you could actually just go up to someone and say oh could you do this this this this and they <{><[>at the click of the fingers they just jump er oh it's wonderful i loved it <[>jump laughs <{><[>laughs whoa laughs <[>laughs yeah it's my <{><[>other side laughs yeah yeah it sort of compensates the stress that you could possibly be feeling <[>that twinkle in your eyes laughs inhales <&>sighs i'm just not in the mood actually i wish <.>i wish i wasn't sick mhm <{><[>you feeling better though? <[>because i'm actually no i've got a fever today i'm just so incredibly hot i mean probably cos it's gotten hotter this <{><[>afternoon and i'm rugged up like it's winter but um yeah i just feel all yuk my cold's breaking though i can feel that <.>s passing but now just sort of feeling <[>mm <{><[>mm <[>inhales but never mind exhales i can't believe i got this course outline wrong <{1><[1>how many times did we bloody go through this thing <,> oh shit old um john smithson came up to me today and said oh do i pay my thirty dollars to you and i said tut well have you been receiving letters to say that you owe them thirty dollars and he goes oh yeah and i went well THAT'S who you pay <{2><[2>it to <[1>laughs <&>11:00 <[2>laughs smarmy that's eXACtly how i said it too i said it to him like that <{><[>oh it was so funny <[>when i walked into the marae after you'd been selling tickets for the hour and i sort of wandered in i thought right who's here i said john want to go to a ball and he sort of went er nah and i said oh i'm sure you'll find some nice wahine there to pick up and he started laughing i said oh i'm not offering myself <{1><[1>no way i'm sure there'd be others <{2><[2>laughs <[1>laughs <[2>laughs laughs yeah it's funny but just the look on his face he was sort of laughing at me like mm laughs laughs no no not me he's trying to fit in now eh <{><[>at <[>sniffs well his mum's not hanging around him so much it's great sniffs <{><[>poor john <[>well she hasn't um turned up at class it's <.>al always only him and he's always there yeah? always at <{><[>class <[>although he didn't <.>say do so well in the test yeah um eleven point <&>12:00 <{><[>eight or something yeah yeah i remember thinking i was surprised i thought i would of thought she would have been <.>sh you know just <&>yawns coughs shoving it down his throat <[>didn't he eleven point eight yep i was <{><[>surprised oh i saw martin um hawera as well at the gym on monday and he said he's going to come and see us to withdraw officially <[>oh <.>he you wouldn't have known then that the <.>la last date is on friday <&>phone starts ringing in the background <{><[>eh <[>no no i just said hurry up <,> tut in fact i thought it was past the um <&>phone stops ringing the date when you could do it <{><[>pretty painlessly <[>that's full years i forgot i didn't make the distinction tut but yeah <{><[>yeah <[>i just assumed i mean we're what six weeks into it now well i thought that you know if you hadn't withdrawn by now you're out of luck cos in the beginning of the year you only got about three weeks to decide three or four weeks tut isn't that a limit for when you can get your fees refunded yeah but i think after that time you got to get dean's approval and perhaps that's what is up to this friday with dean's approval maybe oh it's pretty easy to do i mean all you got to <&>13:00 do is say i'm withdrawing cos i can't handle it and the dean will approve it but laughs yeah you've got to get it done it's just that extra hassle tut mm well some people'd better get <{><[>cracking <[>and you might not be able to get refunds i think yeah i mean like yeah the earlier date is definitely with with the refund that's what kelly baker was asking about <,> she came in when no she was talking about <,> oh was she talking about refund of her thirty to me <.>sh oh no no she spoke about the thirty dollars first and then she said to me she wondered if she could actually get a refund at this late date <{><[>and i said i wasn't that hopeful i don't think so did you hear why she's withdrawing from everything <[>bummer cos you can't i don't think no oh it's because um she's got a scholarship to go overseas <{><[>going overseas and she's leaving in a month so she wanted to tie everything up before she left <[>WOW ka pai yeah so <{><[>that's awesome <[>what's she doing tut i don't know i didn't really sort of talk to her much i was just going oh wow congratulations and SHIT that's great yeah so she doesn't really want to withdraw from everything but she's taking that opportunity to go yeah <&>14:00 and she's just found out about it that's the other thing <{1><[1>yeah bummer if she can't get um refunds <{2><[2>then laughs <[1>tut so <[2>mhm yeah i don't think she will be able to she's pretty much had half of the course really yeah <,> mm so what else can i say rach some more questions <&>yawns well cos we've focused on on hinemoa yeah and maui <{><[>and we've done i did just a couple of questions on haumapuhia cos they won't um <[>mm know it <{><[>too much <[>have done well <.>w we'll do it in class tomorrow inhales um ask them how to say a year like nineteen ninety three cos that's a <{><[>really hard thing to do <[>OH those are <{><[>really good questions <[>you know on the spot but yeah i'm already past twenty though i guess i can get rid of some of these ones <{1><[1>that are um <,> tut um <,,><&>3 i used whakamaoritia so that there's a change from he aha <{2><[2>laughs whakamaoritia te tau nei <,,> <[1>yeah <[2>yeah yeah that's cool <&>15:00
