<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>9:50 i mean it's a buzz just thinking about going to europe but when i got there it was just like oh WOW there is so <&>10:00 much to see mm mm yeah no i won't sell myself short of it <{><[>but <[>and i mean you pay all that money eh you kind of want to get everything you <{><[>can out of it <[>yeah yeah i'd like to go at the same time that you guys go only because i know that we we'd we're similar you know we want to get out and <{><[>have a look i know that if i say even if vicky and tony asked me to go with them i know i could be quite restricted in the movement and how far i could go and things like that but you know going by myself or with them i'd go so far and then you know i don't know if i'd be BRAVE enough to sort of venture out on my own <[>mm mm sort of thing well because see jan's looking at <.>may at leaving at the end of the year from her school IF she's got another job to go to mm right she wanted to know whether <,> kate's position had been filled and i said i didn't know and i wasn't sure when the applications closed inhales but rowan told me the other <&>11:00 day that kyle has applied for a job in <&>name of place oh right that was coming though yeah oh well she's moved out the <.>way that way eh so hopefully if she was to get <{1><[1>that job jan is quite happy to go into mainstream that's what she said she goes yep i'll come to your school you tell rhonda that i don't want to go overseas and <{2><[2>laughs really all this blah blah blah and i'm quite happy to do mainstream she says i'll just come along and just slip on in to mainstream and you know blah blah blah <[1>yeah <[2>laughs yeah <&>noise like pen being put down good on her and i was sort of thinking oh wow cos you <{><[>see <[>see the thing is too if she does get in there i mean even if she gets in into the school with a permanent position mm it's not as if she has to stay on and <.>s STAY in kyle's room no well that's right and that's what i was thinking <{1><[1>IF she won the position i mean these are all big ifs eh <{2><[2>if she won the position she would be able to if you guys were all to go <[1>mm <[2>mm mm you know she could then go in and fill up that <&>12:00 position for the while and a reliever mm could go into the <.>m into the mainstream senior class and that <{1><[1>wouldn't be a big huge hassle cos jan has <{2><[2>been there before she's taught in there and those kids know her <[1>mm <[2>no mm so does the whanau mm in a round about sort of way so it wouldn't be huge upheavals so IF <,> you know and she knows what whanau are like and all <{1><[1>the rest of it and IF <,> then that sort of frees you up a little bit as far as <{2><[2>you know choosing the time to go <{3><[3>cos what i like about going next year is that neroli will be there YOU'RE coming over helen and nick are coming over so there's opportunity to meet up <{4><[4>with them sniffs you know vick might be coming over i know that david and rata are still over there <[1>mm <[2>mm <[3>mm <[4>mm yeah and um who else is fred's over there there's just so many people <.>that jo's cousin leigh who i know quite well she's over there there's just so many people over there <{><[>that <[>what about your cousin is she there no she's just come back oh bugger yeah they got married in <&>13:00 june <,> <.>an <.>an they got married in june <{><[>and she came back and um they're <.>going <.>to coming here to live <[>laughs oh so um no she's not going back unfortunately but i'm going to talk up a storm to her <.>up yeah at <.>he at her brother's wedding in a couple of weeks <{><[>if i go <[>oh that's the way to do it make some contacts <{><[>eh <[>oh yeah oh yeah <{><[>i <[>but i don't know whether her circle of friends'll be similar to my circle of friends <{><[>if you know what i mean <[>yeah but it's a start though going to be a bit hard to find maoris over there isn't it no there's <.>u ngati ranana yeah and i'm sure old leonie will be into that well i hope <.>so she's she said they've got a maori sports team over <{1><[1>there they've got ngati ranana and <.>ra ngati ranana's probably more regular than pukeahu as far as <{2><[2>practices eh <[1>yeah? <[2>oh yeah i'll say there's been a bit of a well so far it's been a moumou taima cos we've done nothing i know <&>softly ki aroha yes ka aroha ki te ropu <{><[>o pukeahu <[>laughs oh yeah i might just say to him look <&>14:00 brother you better make sure that you get these this blimmin group going or else you're going to lose four wonderful performers laughs indeed <{><[>inhales then i was sort of thinking oh but how long do i stay there cos you know i REALLY want to i really want to at least be considered for that <.>ye for that um europe trip in ninety six <[>yes yeah i mean they're <{><[><.>so <[><.>wha to germany yeah i mean <{1><[1>it'll be another europe trip so i mean and that's even though we would've oh i was thinking oh god well i live <{2><[2>over there they're not even going to <.>l they're not even gonna think about kiri oh she's BEEN there done that but then i thought but they might see that as an advantage <[1>sniffs <[2>laughs yeah <{><[>laughs <[>laughs <&>14:30 <&>six minute forty six seconds eligible section not transcribed <&>21:16 how did you cope with kids like um tut real <,,> you know real real i'm so wonderful kids you know and they just <{><[>did any of them not listen to you <[>oh i you'd just go hey look just snap out of it oh yeah one kid did rawiri yeah he did he got in a shitty with me in a bad way because he wasn't pulling his weight as far as inhales because with my whanau i had <.>f six kids but um <,> tut i had with my older kids and gail and them's older kids mm that i was supervising as far as putting the cook tent up right cos it needed tall people mm with a bit of kaha and so my three <&>22:00 younger ones had to then take on duties with gail's younger ones <{><[>inhales right now they weren't pulling their weight and i <.>no i noticed it a bit <.>later a bit later on but i sort of said to them hey look come on Everybody's got to do their bit and you're not <[>mm yeah and he was going oh what and i was going no there's no need for that kind of lip mm laughs now come on snap out of it rawiri and he was going MAN <&>imitates rawiri complaining and i says i'm not saying this just for the hell of it yeah i don't see that you're doing any work everybody else is and you're leaving three people to do the work that six people should be doing yeah now just get over there and he was going <&>imitates rawiri complaining under his breath <,,> you know and i was starting to get really pissed off with him and i said get over there <,> i mean there was <.>w one thing in particular that i think <.>did didn't deal with very well in that i started to raise my voice in front of the other kids so you don't do that in front of senior kids <{><[>in front of secondary <.>s school kids <[>yeah oh <{><[>yeah <[>and i know you don't but he wasn't <&>23:00 listening he was pissing me off <,> and as far as i was concerned you know pulling him aside cos he was just going leave me alone and just get over there and it'll be the end of it mm all he had to do was wash the bloody pots <,> <.>ev just just <{><[>all he had to do for that week <[>oh did they have to do all the dishes oh right well cos all the kids <.>we were split up there was just different there was cleanup the camp at the end of a when we packed up clear up all rubbish tut kenny's job was waterman um he had to collect water every time we were at the tent site whenever paula needed water he had to go and get it inhales um there was put the cook tent up inhales there was <,> pack the bus <,> um there was <,> making breakfast yeah making <{1><[1>lunch and making dinner <{2><[2>washing the dishes washing the pots there was all those there was all those different tasks and if you were on a different campsite you changed tasks <[1>i suppose you could've just <.>saved <[2>word yeah mm so if you were on lunches that's all you had to <&>24:00 do just <{><[>make the lunches and i mean paula had all the stuff there all you had to do was like fill the bread rolls it was all there fill it and that was your work for the day <[>mm mm tut clean the pots at the <{><[>end of the night <[>yeah it's not as if you can say well if you don't do this well you're not going to do that eh <{><[>because it wouldn't work <[>no because it just doesn't work that way no <{><[>cos otherwise somebody would've had to stay back on the bus to make sure they didn't do anything <,,> you know they were told it's all you have to do all you have to do <,> as far as mahi is concerned is put your own tent up with with your mate keep it tidy and do your one job each day <[>mm mm you don't even have to put your tent up every day <,> my god laughs you know so that was just um something that i was confronted with that i didn't handle very well in the respect that i <.>s started raising my voice in front of the other kids <{><[>and i know he was getting embarrassed sniffs but he'd already got me quite heated and <[>mm mm it wasn't a good mood <.>ei mood either on his behalf mm <&>25:00 and he's probably probably a bit alike mm but he didn't hold a grudge eh he was <.>re good fella mm pulled his weight for the rest of the trip though mm man he was in there so i made a point of going i don't know whether this is talking down to him but i made a point of praising him <{1><[1>cos i don't think sometimes secondary school kids get enough <{2><[2>praise you know good one rawiri it was really good i liked the way that you did that i know it sounds a bit wanky but <[1>mm <[2>yeah laughs <{><[>laughs oh well anything to keep the peace <[>laughs oh well that's right and i wanted him to <{1><[1>know that even though i was angry with him that particular day because he was giving me a bit of lip and he wasn't acknowledging <{2><[2>his mahi inhales tut voc um i wanted him to know that i could see where he was doing right and that you know <,> <{3><[3>i'm not too big to say you're doing a good job <[1>and <[2>mm <[3>mm mm yeah <&>25:45
