<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>0:09 robin kahukiwa is giving a um a two day course art course for children <,> and <{1><[1>they're going <.>t make a TANiwha out of felt <{2><[2>she's running the course so as soon as i saw it i thought right katrina will enjoy that <,> so there <{3><[3>you are <[1>oh <[2>oh <[3>yes and is it just for little kids <{><[>though <[>it's from eight till thirteen yeah oh and will it too late for tania to enrol um well you <.>could actually i'll give you the <.>n number <,,><&>3 you ring the city art gallery oh yes i <.>think yeah i might have the number yeah you probably have <.>go it's at the city art gallery it's thirty dollars for the two days which isn't actually too bad <,> <{><[>and <.>they've <[>no that's quite good <{><[>really mm <[>it IS cos they're subsidised <{><[>voc <[>and what time do they start in the <{><[>morning <[>er ten oclock tomorrow so you could ring up tomorrow <.>m probably too late but i'll give it a <&>1:00 <{><[>try <[>well she said a group of sixteen yeah so um <{><[>i know the last few times it's fallen apart because they've never got enough people <[>word mm so um this time i thought oh <.>i i hope it goes ahead cos it sounded interesting and i love robin kahukiwa's illustrations mm <{><[>they're lovely aren't they <[>oh they look beautiful yeah remind me next time i see you to bring the cover of one of the old tu tangata books which has got one of hers on it and it's in full colour it's quite nice yeah i like <.>it um <,> the idea of doing a taniwha i hope they <.>k <.>bring katrina brings home something BIG to hang up somewhere laughs well she's not likely to score the one and only taniwha or <.>they are they making one <{><[>each <[>well i <.>think <.>is i don't know <.>they no it's an <.>indiv they're all doing individual work but what <{><[><.>th what they're hoping is when they have the youth festival in july that they <.>might some people might bring their taniwhas back in does taniwha have an s on it if it's plural <[>oh i see um that depends on whether you went to oxford <&>2:00 or cambridge i think um well <.>i if kids have to bring <.>their yeah children bring their taniwha back that's a better way of phrasing it <{1><[1>isn't it and they'll display them at <.>the the michael fowler foyer <{2><[2>or something like that so um <,> but mind you most children are very loath to <,> part with <.>their their um <.>a art work <{3><[3>cos they don't ever get them back cos i know katrina did a beautiful painting i entered in a competition and i followed it up to get it back and i followed it up and i never got it back <[1>yeah <[2>oh right <[3>yeah mm so um so she's been in the paper again she's <{1><[1>incredible she's always in the flipping <{2><[2>paper <,> just like the last one of her <[1>yes <[2>yeah she goes word or the um <.>th the er papier mache one was good there were some interesting things there mm they're on display at the moment down at the b n z er foyer <{><[>or downstairs somewhere <[>oh yeah well is that the one with the home schoolers that's the one <{1><[1>i saw the other day that was another one <{2><[2>was it <[1>no <.>i <.>i <[2>yeah that was home schoolers papier mache <{><[>but ALL wellington children have been doing this <&>3:00 recycling project it just happened that um <[>oh yeah they wanted to take <{><[>katrina's photo <[><.>no no the woman who organised it for the home schoolers rang contact and said that they were doing it and they had a wee competition and prizes and what have you <,> <{><[>recycled paper and um <[>yes oh oh so it was a <.>b a work project for home schoolers and it worked out quite handy for me cos i was able to do a bit of work on it books from the library and what have you <{><[>mm oh well that's very good <[>yes mm so <{><[><.>that's yeah? <[><.>m yeah and <.>the how are the holidays going <.>i it doesn't make a lot of difference to you i suppose <{><[>word <[>no it doesn't well um katrina's been very busy <.>cos mm she's been rushing out to art courses and horse riding and <.>ballet or <.>dancing <.>a ballroom dancing and so that's what we're at at the moment driving round you know that sort of stage? mm she's a bit <{1><[1>young to get the buses or <{2><[2>not quite but <,> um <{3><[3>yeah <.>that <[1>mm <[2>yes <[3>well if there's a change of bus she can't really can she well not if there's a main road to cross it's <&>4:00 a <.>bi <.>she <.>s i suspect she probably could but anyway she's going to have a go at getting into the central gallery <.>ci city gallery tomorrow on her own <{><[>she knows where to go <[>oh is she oh good mm <{><[>so it's in the nature of learning all about life blah blah blah we wealthy middle class people can pay for it laughs <[>mm mm well we're without a car at the moment <{><[>lenny had a mishap <[>are you oh no at the <{><[>weekend <[>i'm surprised laughs yeah <{1><[1>no it wasn't funny actually he and josie were on their way to hamilton <{2><[2>and um they had <.>a a pile up of cars <{3><[3>somebody um drove in front of somebody <.>else <{4><[4>and four cars banged into <{5><[5>the one that had to stop in a hurry and um lenny was the last one <[1>when i <.>was <[2>oh <[3>oh <[4>oh <[5>oh oh and he couldn't stop in <{><[>time <[>and no <{><[>yeah <[>oh hell so the <.>motor was the motor all right or the motor's going but the um windscreen broke <{><[>and the um the thing's really bashed in <[>oh oh <{1><[1>poor lenny he would have got a dreadful <{2><[2>shock <[1>um <[2>yes he did get word shock <&>5:00 first time i've ever known him to be subdued by anything actually no there has been a few other times but not often no mm and so <.>w <.>they no <.>one they weren't hurt or anything just very <{><[>shaken <[>well <.>he no <.>they they're all right <{1><[1>he um hit the windscreen but um the seatbelt worked just at the last minute <{2><[2>just as he hit so it stopped the force a bit he's a bit sore on the side of his face <[1>mm <[2>minute oh and josie saw it coming and braced herself so <.>she she did <{><[>oh that's lucky yeah <[>yes so she was all right okay so how did they get up to hamilton um well they limped er up a little way <.>th <.>th it was overheating <{1><[1>and they put word four or five kilometres at a time and then they um stopped at a farmhouse and lenny asked if he could ring me <.>to cos he didn't have his a a information there <{2><[2>you know who to ring so um he rang me for that <{3><[3><.>and and the boy in the house went out and had a look and <.>they um he said oh i think it's just this tube and they chopped it off and joined the bits of rubber <{4><[4>together and it stopped overheating <[1>oh <[2>no <[3>mm <[4>mm mm so he got back to <.>hamilton how far out from hamilton were they <&>6:00 oh quite a way they were at um wairakei where's that <{><[>oh that's MILES away <[><.>so yes yeah so they had a long way to <{><[>go <[>oh how awful in <{><[>this weather <[>but it was all right after that <{><[>and well it wasn't too bad that was saturday <[>okay so yeah and the weather was reasonable there i <{1><[1>think they got there by about half past seven it was four oclock <{2><[2>word no no they came back today but they flew back <[1>yeah <[2>are they still up there no? they FLEW back? yeah so where's <{><[>the van <[>the car's coming <.>back the van's coming back <{><[>er i don't know we don't know how it's coming back but it's not coming back under its own steam <[>oh no oh <{1><[1>so the a a's <.>it <.>s sorts <{2><[2>all that out how awful lucky no one was hurt <{3><[3>that's amazing yeah <[1>mhm <[2>yes yeah <[3>yes well it was very lucky because <{1><[1>there was all those five cars in all were involved nobody was hurt <{2><[2>um oh of course the one <.>who you know who caused the accident just drove off without a dent <,> <[1>mm <[2>oh oh so um <{><[>tut but everyone else was pretty shaken up but they um they weren't hurt and there were kids in the car <.>w in the one in front <[>word mhm they were all right <{><[>which was a relief <[>oh well that's a relief <&>7:00 yeah how awful in the holidays it shows how easily it can happen <{><[>doesn't it <[>oh yes mm mm mm so that's a bit of a shock to the system and then lenny was just leaving today and jonathan fell down the steps and hurt his nose and we were worried about <{><[>him cos he had to have an x ray and er <[>oh <.>he he'll be all right i remember <{><[>alister once bashed his nose he would have been about the same age as jonathan <[>yeah oh is that right and he hit the wall with such a crunch mm he tripped on the bed oh and i thought oh no something MUST have happened mm <.>and i was worried because there was a big <.>ridge bluey <{1><[1>bruise across the bridge of his <{2><[2>nose <[1>yes <[2>yes that's <{><[>exactly the same yeah <[>yeah and the next day i <.>went i went into town and i was still worried and then i thought oh i'll go to the doctor and the <.>woman she looked at him for free i thought how nice of <{1><[1>her and she looked up his nostril and she said oh no you did the right thing to come in because if you come straight in they can just push it back into place if it HAS <{2><[2>gone out mm so if you leave it it'll grow crooked <{3><[3>and the cartilage is all out of alignment and so <.>i <{4><[4>i was so glad i went in <[1>mm <[2>oh <.>sh <[3>mm <&>8:00 <[4>mm mm because it <.>was it's awful to have a <.>nose <.>because yeah the cartilage in <.>y you're stuffed up for the rest of your life yeah unless you have an operation <.>t mm well anyway he's <.>got yes and he'll be <.>on he'll have <{1><[1>such a huge lump there and heather took him <.>t <.>the to the <{2><[2>doctor and she sent him to <.>the <[1>he'll be all right <[2>mm mm um to have an x ray <{><[>and but we were a bit worried cos <.>she's i tried to ring tonight and she's out again <.>so <[>mm oh no it'll <{><[>be all right anne <[>so word might be all right i'm sure it will be i'll give him a ring later yes i mean a little <.>a <.>th the cartilage is so bendy that <.>it they can just push it back in oh yes it doesn't sound very nice <{><[>and i mean he's been sick too he's had this really rotten cough <[>so it <.>doesn't <.>don't <.>don't don't tell me about it we've got the same <{><[>coughs here i think mm <[>oh have you mm <&>8:44
