<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>0:07 so um yeah she's evidently in the north island <,> tut she's in <.>u up really north um just out of auckland <,> titirangi <,> actually that's where anja <{><[>was <[>that's where anya lives <,> <{><[>yeah <[>yeah <,> tut so um her daughter <.>she she gave me her daughter's name there's only one daughter left down here now mm tut um so she said well i could ring her and get her voc and get her new address she's evidently just shifted recently yeah um so and she said unless you want to talk to her so i thought oh well that's a bit of news so i rang her daughter yeah and um she's going up there for about a month but she said her mother's second husband um sometimes comes down to wellington and sometimes she comes with him oh right that'd be good yeah <{><[>so i thought voc <[>and so did she know who you were pardon did she know who you <{><[>were the daughter <[>oh no i clears throat actually i've got <.>a her name was kelly i've got <&>1:00 a VAGUE feeling that i heard about her birth but you know by that time we really weren't in touch very much yeah um but it sounds as though there were four in the family right and um most of them have ended up going up north sort of round about there tut so um yeah so now i've gone this far trying to contact her i will <{1><[1>give her <.>a i will write her a note and <{2><[2>word <[1>yeah <[2>so you've got her address now yeah <.>a actually i wrote it in your phonebook so i'll have to cut that edge of the page off i'm terribly <{><[>sorry but you know i clears throat had to write it down quickly <[>oh that's all right yeah yeah so that was yeah that was interesting it sort of gets you thinking a bit doesn't it and OH and actually a lot of things happened in the short conversation we had jenny had a younger sister called karen mm tut and she died when she was twenty eight did she she left two children who are also living in wellington <,> so so did you know karen yeah <,> and so um voc yeah she was a couple of years younger than jenny <.>but <&>2:00 was jenny the one that was brethren pardon was jenny the one that was brethren that you used to go out with her family all the time <,> no no no that was on the other corner laughs oh yeah no i actually stayed with them a couple of times <.>when i think it might've <.>been my impression was that it was when <,> um things were getting a bit <,> bad with mum and dad and they decided that they'd have a holiday on their own yeah so one year they went up north on their own and then <.>the inhales <.>they and sleeping in the van and everything and then the next year they went round down south and i stayed with jenny mm and i <.>was really wasn't very happy about it cos i didn't like her father i was scared of him <,> and yeah i was always yeah it was and while we were at the table he'd um <,,> tut <.>i cos i was trying very hard cos i was scared of them him i used to eat <.>very try and eat um neatly and everything you <{><[>know and be on my best behaviour and <,,> he i caught him once looking at um jenny's mother and sort of like and then he saw me looking and said something about come on lizzie eat up or something cos i was taking too long <[>yeah <&>3:00 yeah but it was cos i was nervous laughs yeah i remember that <,> mm mm so um yeah so she died evidently because she had something oh she gave <.>her gave it a name but she was waiting for a kidney donor yeah and um while she was waiting she caught pneumonia <{><[>and died <[>have you got a donor thing on your driver's licence a what are you a donor on your driver's licence no <,> they've they've got the colour of my eyes but no <,,> i've never felt really nice about that no i haven't either it's mean eh eh it's mean eh but i haven't either <,,> yes my brother has but i don't like the thought <{><[>of <.>who <[>but see i don't think i'd even want <.>people's other people's bits if i was sick <,,> <&>4:00 yes i like to feel that i wouldn't <{><[>um <[>i mean i'm sure i probably would if it came to it i know it's the same as to whether you'd you'd want to accept help if you had cancer or something isn't it yeah you know <.>that it's easy to be brave when you're not in the position that friend of sammy's had a new eh that friend of sammy's had a new liver what did you say then that friend of sammy's oh right had a new bit <,,> but i didn't think that was very nice either cos i mean he was just about dying <,,> but because his parents were exceedingly wealthy and like his father was the financial director of <&>name of company they happened to have two hundred thousand in cash sitting round home so they could pay for him to have it in sydney and otherwise if they couldn't've done that like voc privately then he would've died mm and it just doesn't quite seem right to me <&>5:00 no so it really ends up with <,> boiling down to how much money you've got doesn't it clears throat well it does really i mean otherwise he would've had to have one of those appeal things where they go to the public and he didn't <{1><[1>have time for that cos he was practically dead <{2><[2>anyway by the time he got to australia <,,> <[1>mm <[2>mm yeah so yeah so it sounds as though if <.>she if she wanted to look me up um you know we'd have quite a lot to talk about wouldn't <{><[>we tut but what i'll do is i'll <.>write i'll write a letter to her <.>and and i'll kind of tut fill her in on the things that we don't know so far tut and um <,,> and then it will be sort of up to her as to whether she decides to contact me if she's in wellington <[>yeah yeah so what are you going to do this afternoon tut well i'll come into town cos i want to i suddenly thought i could go to the p s i s and <,> get some money out of that account yeah i don't know where that is eh i don't know where that is <{><[>but you can probably word somewhere <[>no i mean you can look up the phonebook or <,> mm <&>6:00 and things like that so i'll probably come in although it's supposed to rain yeah are you gonna walk in or take <{><[>the car <[>yeah i was gonna walk in <,> i don't like to sound a cowardy custard but i really don't like the thought of driving your car across that crossing well don't take it that way go down <,> you know the way <{><[>voc <[>where that voc where the roadworks are yeah go that way yeah do you want me to pick you up um depends if it's raining or not laughter i don't know what time i'll be finishing cos it depends how much work we get done mm well i don't imagine that i'll be in town for long anyway <,,><&>3 mm clears throat well when <{><[>and er voc <[>what's the time now eh? what is the time now oh what is the time did you say <{><[>i can't hear very well cos i've got two radios going just a minute <&>6:47 <&>MS takes earplug out and goes away for forty two seconds <&>7:29 <[>yeah it's twenty five <.>to twenty five past eleven okay word yes well perhaps if i do anything i'll give you a call <{><[>and if you don't answer i'll know you're not there yeah <[>okay i might go up the road yeah if i don't answer i'll probably be back soon mm mm okay okay? right oh bye bye <&>7:48
