<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>1:54 and it really pisses you off <{><[>because you have to wait so long <[>yeah <.>yeah yeah it was a <.>real it was ages they had to wait for it and i got there and <.>i and i said have you got to put it on the computer and <&>2:00 he said you have to do have your own car and i said WHAT <,> this is really annoying did you say that's <{><[>not on the card <[>and <.>also and also i didn't bother actually oh you <{><[>SHOULD have <[>yeah i should have yeah i should have <.>i i just thought oh i thought perhaps i'd missed it but then i went back and read the card and it said um even said meals and transport provided tut gosh yeah so i should have <.>i i thought actually i must have missed it i thought perhaps i was just really dumb and just didn't look at the thing properly or something mm mm anything else there um oh there was that and then there was this other <.>th i didn't i wasn't really looking seriously i just had a <.>l quick look and there was this thing um selling mediterranean and greek food <,> in town one <{1><[1>in <.>the i think it was no it didn't say commission it said <{2><[2>um pay negotiable so it probably does <{3><[3>mean commission <[1>on commission <[2>mm <[3>oh well of course it's commission yeah but it didn't actually say so but it's probably for that restaurant beirut actually i'd say <.>d do they <.>manufacture i mean do <.>they i <.>don't i don't know well they're selling new kind of mediterranean <,> food <,> and <.>i i don't know it's probably quite likely there i don't know <&>3:00 what selling it IN the restaurant no no it was just selling it um it'd be selling it to other restaurants and delis and stuff wouldn't it be i think it was <.>s no i think it said selling in um offices or something i can't remember oh like at lunch yeah yeah <{><[>it was lunch and morning teas <[>oh oh yeah but yeah anyway there was that and then there was um <,,> oh that was about it actually there was another one i thought hemi should go for but it was gone by the time i went back a second <.>ti cause i <.>went cos i wasn't going to wait round for the <.>going for the going in line you know <{1><[1>when you've got a minute to yourself you should have a cup of coffee while i did it so i went back again <{2><[2>and there was this one it was um <,> two guys wanted to dress up as batman and superman <{3><[3>laughs but it was gone by the time i went back a second time <[1>mm <[2>yeah <[3>laughs i bet he would have been <{><[>really upset <[>i know laughs and there was <{><[>um <[>has he been there himself yet um i don't <{><[>think he went <.>every <[>he must have to get the father christmas yeah he went to get <.>the apparently he went every day the first week or something i don't know i <{><[>don't really think <.>it i don't know <[>yeah you just have to keep going i <{><[>think <[>yeah well that's the thing like every time i've been there there's been quite a few possibilities it's just that oh the clown thing's still there laughs is it laughs surprise surprise <&>4:00 there are quite a few possibilities i mean i don't really need to go for one because um i just thought that holiday camp one might be quite fun it's three fifty gross for a week yeah that's not <{><[>bad <[>so i thought it would be quite fun thing to do really but um voc yeah er wasn't too bad you needed your own car or your own licence your own car i can't understand why you <.>need i should have just stuck round a bit but the thing is they only needed two people <{1><[1>and so so i thought well that would mean that if they've actually put they want their own cars then voc they're going to get people with their own car anyway but i mean surely you could catch a train up there or something i mean <.>y once you're <.>a kids are at a camp you don't drive them around anywhere else they stay the camping <{2><[2>ground and also <[1>mm <[2>yeah exactly but you probably need <.>to if you're the counsellor you'd probably need to drive places to get the shopping and stuff sometimes or something i suppose i guess so but normally <{1><[1><.>at normally at camp they just truck everything in don't they <{2><[2>i mean word at school camps you don't <.>p you don't have people going off i mean <.>it's you have millions of food and everything like they were looking for people to cook for the camp as well <[1>they might send you on errands <[2>yeah i guess they do eh oh yeah i didn't think <.>i'd <.>i i mean they said experience and <.>i'd i mean okay i could cook but for a camp i don't laughs <{><[>word <[>yeah not for that many yeah oh it'd be probably quite <.>li <{1><[1>word yeah well <.>robi like robina rawls was there and she said oh <&>microphone noise word you know spaghetti for dinner that sort <.>of peel lots of potatoes laughs <{2><[2>it'd only be pretty basic food but even so i didn't really feel up to that one <{3><[3>but um dan hathaway was there <[1>but you've been a kitchen hand at knox <[2>yeah <[3>mm oh yeah did you talk to him <&>microphone noise obscures speech word bit overwhelming really mhm so when he came out and said hello i went word just here looking for a job and stuff like that but wasn't really oh he's <.>never he's <{1><[1>never probably would've gone hello <{2><[2><,> are you looking for a job you looking for a job <[1>yeah <.>very <[2>yeah exactly i wasn't sort of laughs and it wasn't sort of like you sort of have a long chat or anything he just sort of wanders off <{><[>halfway through <[>he's just so unsmiling isn't he yeah he is <{><[>even when <.>he <[>like even when he's really trying it just seems like he's not <{><[>at all <[>yeah yeah he sometimes he can be quite friendly but like <.>po <.>m i mean he could have been i don't know i mean it isn't really <{><[>word <[>you sort of have to get used to him because the thing is <.>you like if you didn't know what he's like <{><[>you'd just think that he was totally unfriendly <[>mm yeah like i <.>w if i didn't know that he's probably normally like that i would have thought that he'd be <.>quite he was quite sort of unfriendly just cos i mean you know if you haven't seen someone for a while and <&>6:00 especially <{1><[1>if you sort of know them from the hostels you normally have a bit more of a chat to them <{2><[2>word but um jacqui was there again <{3><[3>laughs but she still wants she still wants to get that <.>m um nissan mobil one or something so she wasn't going for <{4><[4>anything else <[1>yeah <[2>yeah exactly <[3>laughs <[4>but somehow if it's this weekend and she hasn't got it <{><[>yet i think they're not interested <[>well yeah i feel like <.>i yeah well i can't understand <.>what but then she said she didn't want to go for that um counsellor one or something because it was going to be in the same week as the mobil one or something i don't know what she said about that one yeah so i don't <{><[>get word <[>but <.>it's it's i mean three hundred and fifty dollars for a week is better than whatever <{1><[1>you get for two days even if it's a really good rate for two <{2><[2>days <[1>yeah yeah yeah yeah <[2>yeah yeah i couldn't understand what she was talking about i didn't really pay <{><[>much attention to her <[>i think she's just living in her own little <{1><[1>dream world but i think her parents voc probably um <{2><[2><,> reinforce that i don't know <[1>laughs probably <[2>well she <.>s she <.>doesn't she used to have <.>a she used to have a job in a um bookshop anyway in khandallah oh did she yeah <.>it well during seventh form she did and she had that all the time i think <{1><[1>i <.>mean pictures in there i don't know don't know it was <{2><[2>quite funny <[1>oh yeah <[2>she's a strange person she's very boring <{><[>laughs <[>yeah she is eh i wasn't going to say that <{><[>i thought it was too mean <[>laughs oh no she's very boring to talk to <{><[>and stuff i mean stuff i mean <[>she's just <&>7:00 so <{1><[1>sort of insipid you know <{2><[2>what i mean <.>just <[1>she's very plain as well <[2>yeah she's so plain <{><[><.>like yeah <[>what her face? she's <.>just it's just <.>em <{><[><.>it i don't think that she's plain i just think it's because she's so dull a person <[>word yeah and <.>she her her face never comes alive she never <.>does you know she <{><[>never moves she just kind of sits there you know what i mean <[>yeah perhaps that's what it is yeah perhaps she'd be a bit better looking if she was a bit more lively i guess mm i don't know she just seems <.>really this whole thing of her is just really plain <{><[>and horrible <[>she just seems like a boring <{1><[1>person laughs i don't <{2><[2>know god we're being bitches <[1>mm <[2>yeah we are and it's on tape as well <{1><[1>laughs never mind laughs but um what was i talking about <{2><[2>oh who else was there oh jacqui was there and regina ray and tracey were there <[1>laughs oh dear laughs never mind laughs <[2>jacqui job search oh yeah <{><[>not in her boxer shorts i mean <[>and er no no and who else was there no i think that was about it it's quite a good place to meet people you know <{><[>isn't it laughs <[>it is i mean you go there and you sit there and there's heaps of people there laughs yeah it's quite funny but there weren't many people <.>the it was so <.>po it was pouring with rain i guess <{1><[1>that there weren't that <.>many there <.>weren't i thought <{2><[2>there'd be more people word <[1>oh yeah <[2>those must be the best days to go when it's pouring with rain <&>8:00 yeah i mean there <.>were you know that camp counsellor job had only gone up that morning i think yeah yeah i should have actually looked into it a bit more i should have just pretended i had a car or said it's not on the thing or you know just found out a bit more about it <{><[>but a girl in front of me had just gone for it and i could <.>hear didn't have a car because she rung up the person and everything <[>oh yeah yeah and also i wasn't actually incredibly desperate to to to you know do it i just thought oh it would be quite fun to do mm so i word i um tut <,> haven't gone and reported in yet <,> <{1><[1>i was supposed to report last thursday <{2><[2>but the thing is i don't think i really don't think i'm gong to want any jobs from there in december <,,> <[1>oh <[2>oh really tut from no <{><[>well with working in <.>a <[>from job search because i've got enough you know but don't you need to just keep reporting in or can you stop reporting in <{><[>why don't you just tell them you've got a job <[><.>well i can just <.>reen but i didn't get it through them oh right so it doesn't matter so i can just reenrol right or perhaps i'll go in today and say look what's the story you know i didn't report because i've got a job and do i need to keep reporting if i <{><[>will be in january as well they shouldn't mind too much <[>yeah yeah yeah no no they shouldn't no i don't <.>kno <.>i i just <&>9:00 reported in i just ignore them i have to go and see them at the um thing and see the real pain is i don't know <.>what like i know that i'm <.>working like i work from friday and i'm going to work till next friday <{1><[1><.>this i mean this coming friday but i don't know what's happening <.>ever i never know what's happening the week after <{2><[2>and so i can't sort of think oh well i've definitely got work and so i should just go and tell them you know <{3><[3>don't worry <[1>mhm <[2>yeah <[3>how much work have you got well i i mean like i've worked like i've <,> worked i started like friday i've worked working like <.>started this last friday the twenty seventh yeah i worked friday saturday sunday monday tuesday wednesday thursday friday i've got duties for all of those days oh that's good <&>9:35
