<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>2:54 yeah what i called you <{><[>about was this um i did those invitations <[>mhm oh cool <&>3:00 at work on friday oh good one at the moment i've got two on one page and they just sort of like playing with a stripe at the top and the bottom okay now i could fax you a copy tomorrow if you're going to be somewhere where you've got a fax you going to be at <{><[>word <[>um oh god they're only private though i don't know whether the main one where <.>the where the number comes through cos i'm at southpac oh right so <{><[>i can't really fax <[>and on the <.>fl no on the floor i'm on um the general number is downstairs somewhere and whether <.>it's you wouldn't probably get to me yeah well i don't know whether you want me to um <{><[>whether you want to <.>s <.>s <[>oh but they'll <.>look they'll probably look fine the way they are <{><[>mm <[>what i was going to do was photocopy it on colour paper with like um oh can you do that <{><[>laughs <[>well i'll just go into a photocopying place and say i want it done on colour paper but i haven't decided what colour yet yeah er just one that can be easily seen like a light colour yeah tut um <{><[>don't <.>use <[>cos it looks sort of kind of plain cos i <.>was spent ages trying to figure out <{><[>how to do a square <[>laughs yeah and i could get like <{><[>a square on the <.>t on the text but it wouldn't show when i printed it out <&>4:00 <[>laughs oh <{><[>laughs <[>and then i was drawing <.>se drawing these lines and it sort of said three c and i couldn't figure what voc it said a line that they've got was like point zero three of a c and i was like what's a c i'll make it big and fat so i put three c and it turns out that it was three centimetres so i had this BIG FAT line of <{><[>three centimetres <[>oh oh you had to bring up your um you <.>had resetting your tabs is that what it was telling you no <{1><[1>it was all to do with um <.>w had to draw a line it had to sort of go <{2><[2><.>into on word perfect to draw a line and someone's taken the book home from work <[1>oh no <[2>oh laughs oh <{><[>oh that's a <.>bit mm shouldn't you just have a copy that's like stuck to the computer laughs <[>so i <.>like oh well no one hardly ever uses it <{><[>i've <.>never i mean it's just like to write fancy things like this and i thought oh <[>oh right laughs and so i spent ages trying to figure it out and i've <.>got shall i just <.>like and i <.>got what i've got is a line i couldn't draw a box <{><[>i've got a line at the top and a line at the bottom and a <.>line just a thin line where you put the name <[>mhm oh right and then it says like all the stuff shall i read it out to you oh no we worked it out so it <.>sounds it sounds all right yeah it <.>says i said i said to call you or me <{><[>to tell her that you're coming <[>mhm yep and from about five thirty onwards <&>5:00 mhm on sunday march the eight with your drinks and meat <{1><[1>we'll have the barbecue hot and salads to eat i put and i thought oh god that rhymes <{2><[2>after i'd written it i thought oh my god that rhymes <[1>yeah <[2>laughs that sounds quite good though <{><[>laughs <[>yeah oh no that sounds good and i put it's a barbecue to farewell me yeah oh good <{1><[1>that's good so people <.>m mind you everybody knows that now anyway <{2><[2>but they've been having people <[1>okay <[2>yeah but i thought that um i don't know whether you want <.>to i can get them photocopied and send them out to people if that would be easiest eh yeah and that will save you doing this ringing up and i had another thought that i <{><[>thought that might ring my brother cos mum thinks he's got a um gas barbie i might be able to borrow it off him <[>mhm oh good cos <.>we <.>see i think margie's got one but when i sort of said to her about it she never OFFERED <{1><[1>and you think when they're going to do that that they would offer straight away <{2><[2>it's a brand new one they got it given to them from her in laws so i'm not too sure whether she yeah <[1>yeah <.>i <[2>yeah well i said to mum about it tonight and i said oh but <.>s sally's sister margie is sort of a bit like if you spill grease on it she might be upset <&>6:00 yes <{><[>i mean yes yeah well you <.>know you know what she's like she's so fussy about stuff <.>like yeah <[>and it's like it's a barbeque yeah i mean i don't know i mean that's reasonable she doesn't have to <{><[>lend us a barbeque but i don't know if my brother's got one or not mum thinks he has but she's not sure <[>mm sure <{><[>laughs <[>cos he often borrows one off his brother in law oh god <.>in in which case i sort of thought it was a bit awful to <{><[>borrow someone's <[>yeah i could ring her up anyway and just beg and plead well i haven't rung him so i'll give him a call tonight <{><[>see but he was out <[>yeah okay yeah anyway oh that sounds good <{><[>sounds excellent <[>yeah so i'll get those sent <.>ou i don't know when i'll get them done cos oh did i tell you i got my tickets i told you all about how my tickets have changed eh no oh god on friday morning yeah they rang me up from the travel agents yeah and they um say we've got some bad news uhuh your flight <.>has the airline has changed the timetable for your flight so now i have to <{><[>fly out <[>your international? my international yeah and i have to flight out on tuesday now instead of the wednesday oh my <{><[>god <[>and that means i have to spend the night in buenos aires and i'm just like oh god this is my <.>night worst nightmare <{1><[1>and i had just booked and paid for the day before <&>7:00 i had booked and paid for um some tickets for mum to come up to auckland to see me off <,> and they were <.>n these special cheap fares cos it was late at night and they were ninety nine dollars <{2><[2>nonrefundable nontransferrable fares and i thought i'd lost all the money from those as well and i was just like oh my god this is not happening this is just awful <[1>oh <[2>oh oh god but um yeah but what happened i went down friday lunchtime it turns out we <{><[>can actually transfer the fares <[>yes oh well they'd HAVE TO i mean it's not YOUR FAULT well i know but if you buy nontransferrable nonrefundable <{1><[1>fares that's the risk you take but i was really quite <{2><[2>i was i couldn't believe it <[1>yeah <[2>yeah but i mean <.>that i mean they MUST <.>think they must have had that before and someone said yeah but the international flights been changed and i mean <{><[>just <[>yeah but mum isn't on the international flight you see yeah she's just on a national flight yeah and that's why they don't really <{><[>care <.>that <[>oh so that means you got to <.>fly are you going to fly up on what monday now well <.>n yeah we're going to fly up on monday evening monday evening <{><[>oh right <[>cool we <.>thought <.>mum was mum was <.>at i mean mum said oh <.>we <.>that <.>sh she wasn't going to COME <{1><[1>because <.>i <.>w she wasn't going to see me off and it was like just this big nightmare and then i went down and sorted it out <{2><[2>lunchtime on <.>mon on friday <&>8:00 <[1>yeah <[2>yeah oh good so now i have to pay a hundred and fifteen u s dollars to spend one night in buenos aires voc and i'm like cool have you worked out the whole visa thing have you got that <{><[>price worked out <[>oh well i spoke to gary today he rang me from japan to say happy valentine's day <{><[>oh <[>oh lovely oh excellent you would've <.>been there would've been a good line too <{><[>laughs <[>yeah hey he's meeting lara for lunch next <.>sat next sunday oh cool <{><[>laughs <[>he rang up lara and i never thought he'd do it i never <{1><[1>thought he'd ring lara and he's meeting her on the day that <.>jane they're coming down to tokyo cos jane's leaving <{2><[2><.>that <[1>laughs <[2>oh my god oh jesus it would be <{><[>too <[>next sunday and um they're going to <.>meet i don't know whether she's just meeting lara or whether he's <{1><[1>meeting jane and lara for lunch <{2><[2>so <.>i <[1>yeah <[2>and it'll be sandy too yeah and <{1><[1>i thought of it oh wow that's really cool cos i gave him the number but i never thought he'd do it <{2><[2>like i never word <[1>laughs <[2>no well you never do that word haven't got enough time <.>or and <{1><[1>all that sort of stuff oh <{2><[2>COOL laughs <[1>yeah <[2>but he did so that's really cool i thought it was really neat and i was just like oh wow laughs oh that's so cool <{1><[1>oh <.>re that i'm we're most impressed with gary <{2><[2>laughs <&>9:00 <[1>yeah <[2>i'm impressed i <.>was impressed he rang me up he rang me from this restaurant in kyoto he said hi it's me i'm calling to say happy <{><[>valentine's day i was just like oh cool <[>laughs oh wow cos you're not sure whether he'd remember because in japan whether they <{><[>bother celebrating that <[>oh no they have <.>this i read about it in the paper they have this really big thing in japan and all the women buy presents for the men mhm on valentine's day and then about i think it's about a month later they have this day called white day <{><[>or <.>white and all the men buy presents for the women <[>yeah oh that sounds good <{><[>oh <[>only they're white presents like they buy them white underwear and <{><[>white stuff <[>voc oh right you know white frilly lacy <{><[>knickers and stuff <[>i read this thing in the paper about how japanese men are voted the less <.>se the <.>most voc the most unsexy the most <,> unromantic <{><[>most boring on a date and that by all these japanese women in each country they did this <.>thing from people who buy mills and boons answered this thing new zealand men didn't do too badly but the japanese got the worst in everything laughs <[>oh god i think i heard parts of that on the radio yeah <{1><[1>yeah <.>they they'd said it <.>over it was quite funny <{2><[2>and they sort of said yes they <.>they and japanese men <.>always always forgot their partner's birthdays and they always forgot wedding anniversaries whereas the italians always remembered wedding anniversaries but weren't too hot on the birthdays <{3><[3>er but i think wedding anniversaries are pretty amazing to remember i don't think dad ever remembers <{4><[4>laughs <[1>yeah <[2>yeah <&>10:00 <[3>yeah <[4>yeah <,> i don't know mind you he doesn't remember birthdays either oh <{><[>i'm terrible with birthdays <[>he can't even remember what year alex was born he's always got her as a different time mind you i'm not too good on her age either actually come to think of it laughs <.>i i can never remember any of my family how old they are i just sort of like um yeah <{><[>you rely on your mum for that kind of thing laughs <[>cos when i was little when i was little they were all twenty something yeah <.>everything one was twenty something and now they're all sort of about thirty something so yeah i'm gradually getting there i know a few of them but i'm sort of still a bit lost around the middle <{1><[1>time and i'm sort of like um er <{2><[2>word <[1>yeah <[2>well sometimes people don't i mean if you don't place a lot of stock in it the person themselves i mean laughs yeah like alexandra always said she didn't but she used to get fed up if we didn't send her a birthday card she said oh don't said me anything i don't want any presents don't want any cards and then she'd get upset when we didn't oh i mean you shouldn't say things like that cos we tend to take you at your word laughs <&>11:00 my sister's like that she <.>m whinges and moans <.>she all the time she's like tut don't want a birthday party don't want this don't want that and then like THIS <{1><[1>year in about <.>august her birthday's in november she was moaning cos no one sent her birthday cards overseas last <{2><[2>year when she was overseas and we were like well we didn't have an addRESS <.>but and <{3><[3>then she went in the same breath <[1>mm <[2>laughs <[3>laughs well that's a <.>good that's a good <.>o excuse yes in the same breath she's saying don't have a birthday party for me this year i don't want a birthday <{1><[1>party i don't want to do anything special for my birthday as far as i'm concerned i'm not having a birthday and we're going so why are you <{2><[2>upset about us not <.>sending <[1>laughs <[2><.>that's <.>my my mother used to say things like that <.>too she used to say those things as <.>well <{1><[1>she'd go oh don't get <.>d <.>i mother's day is just a capitalist thing <{2><[2>blah blah but woe and betold if she didn't have lunch <,> done for her on the sunday then <.>we <{3><[3>laughs <[1>yeah <[2>laughs <[3>yeah or breakfast in bed or something <{><[>like that <[>oh woe and betold did we hear about it for the next month or so <{><[>laughs <[>yeah yeah which is a bit of a hoot <&>11:42
