<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>14:24 hello hi mum it's only me hello how are you i'm surprised that you called i know it's a bit late <{><[>but er <[>it doesn't matter no i've been just watching er house of eliott mm me too mm quite enjoying it what's new oh nothing much did about um oh between three and four hours work today mm <{><[>what was that <[>oh work work that is <{><[>and um i went out and had another critical look at the place in newtown <[>mm yeah and what did you think of it <&>15:00 it's all right it's got um <.>it's it's um basic in a lot of ways yeah um the bathroom very <,> er almost <.>non existent hot water pressure through the shower mm <{><[>voc <[>and the bathroom would probably be the bit i like LEAST about it yeah um yeah so i've got to go and contact banks and so on now during the week yeah just to work out voc you know yeah what's what yeah what's what and who's who and where's where <{><[>and all that sort of stuff <[>laughs yeah so um that was my day <{><[>really <[>have you been to did you go to kiri stone's for a barbecue on sunday yeah that was on saturday <{><[>saturday night <[>oh right bit more word no that was saturday night her younger boy well her only boy was five turned five the day before i think it was <{><[>and um that was very pleasant night actually <[>mm oh what did you have to take him a present yeah took him a present <{><[>and took some steak <[>what did you take for the barbecue <{><[>um <[>what did you take for the kid um an absolutely positively wellington sweatshirt <&>16:00 oh well that's a good idea yeah well i predicted that he'd get an awful lot of toys and so <{><[>on from other people going <[>yes i think <.>you and and they LIKE a tee shirt don't they yes you know so that was a bit um something like that <{><[>would be respectable <[>is he her youngest child or has she <{><[>many children <[>yes she's only got the two she's only got the two oh how old's the other one um <&>mereana must be seven going on eight maybe <{><[>mm <[>oh yeah yeah <{><[>so that was very pleasant um i also got a call from kiwa this morning <[>oh well oh good yes so i had a nice chat to him mm oh that was nice and um where was he home <{><[>at school yeah <[>he was at school and it was church day and they had all been out to church and he said he'd rung me a couple of times during the week but i wasn't there and i said well i actually probably WAS there but your phone <{><[>wasn't going yeah <[>but the bells had been er playing up they seem to be okay though cos eru called me <,> a bit earlier and it rang through did it <{><[>yeah <[>yeah funny eh <{><[>and when kiwa <.>ca when kiwa called this morning it rang through so i don't know whether my fiddling with it yesterday <.>has <&>17:00 <[>it is funny might have put it to right put it right again yeah or not i don't know oh i got quite a surprise because bill and the two boys turned up and the two boys cut my lawns oh nice mind you <,> er you know it's pretty dreadful i had to pay to have my lawns cut i didn't pay THEM no last time daniel came i just gave him five dollars once he's been right and but i mean he doesn't really make a hell of a good job of it as a matter of fact jason went over it all again yeah but um <,> i think mary said to me one day it's bloody awful well she didn't swear she doesn't swear much but she just had to pay them <.>la you know lawns done when you've <.>got the crowd over there to do them <{><[>you know her grandsons do hers for her <[>mm right it is pretty awful i suppose that i have to pay out money to murray or whoever is around to do mine right but anyway um they were done today <.>whe and i didn't offer them any money i gave them lollies and biscuits you know <&>18:00 <,> so did daniel and jason both come up did they oh yes <.>they bill dropped them BOTH up which was quite good and er jason actually went right round with the um <,> oh <,> i've forgotten what it's called an edge thing a weed eater weed eater and he did under the thing so then after er daniel finished doing the lawns he went over them again <,> so that <{><[>you know <[>were they quite long well oh they weren't that LONG but er i don't know whether jason just didn't think they were good enough right and he he did them over again anyway the thing is i am pleased they ARE DONE everyone else's in the street were done except mine you know and er not that they seem to get that long but they're all dandelions which of course show up like sore toes well it makes them <{><[>look untidy even if the grass itself isn't very long <[>mm so i was really pleased to get that finished you know <&>19:00 yeah and they obviously weren't looking for money well JASON certainly wasn't <,> and i just didn't bother this time cos francis was cross last time said they shouldn't do it for money you wouldn't hurt them to do it for you <,> so i was quite pleased <{><[>that you know <[>yeah it would be nice to do them on a slightly more regular basis though wouldn't it laughs well i mean i don't know how many <{><[>word <[>you probably wouldn't mind giving them a bit of money <{><[>i think laughs <[>no i wouldn't mind giving jason and daniel five dollars every time <{><[>they came <[>yeah if they came up once a fortnight <{><[>and just sort of ran it even if even if it was just a rough job and done once a fortnight it'd be you know <[>even if they <.>came OH fortnight? probably six months since <.>he yes been <{><[>you know <[>yes both laugh oh well never mind they're done now yeah i know they're done now and it's good but i i quite agree with mary because she <.>w she was rather selfCONciously she said you know it's pretty awful you know she said that you have to pay to keep your lawns done laughs oh well <{><[>that's the way the world goes round <[>there you are i'll say it is yeah no but kiwa sounded good he um pleased he sounds good <&>20:00 he says the phone has been fixed he said <.>th there's good news and there <.>b and there's bad news laughs something like that you know <{><[>and the phones been fixed the problem is you can't ring me on it laughs they can ring out on it but um <[>yeah oh yeah we can't ring in on it because um voc <.>i my voice gets through but they won't hear i won't hear his voice or <{><[>something so it's obviously still not fixed <[>no yeah well at least if he can ring you it's something yeah you know <{><[>so he knows you're going up to see him <[>well it's a start it's a start anyway oh yeah he knows that i'm coming up for the open day and i said that if you were well enough you would probably come up come too yeah i'd quite like to do that and um he asked me if i'd received all the bills for the stationery and <{><[>the school fees and stuff word i said well no not yet <[>how lovely laughs no they'll come yes they'll come oh well i er i wrote to elizabeth and marcia today cos marcia had written to me you know and oh cos <.>i i wrote to elizabeth first because she'd written a couple of letters and i thought well i had better write to her first so i wrote to her first then i wrote to er marcia she wrote she's word what's his name paul in paris helena <{><[>and she said exactly the <&>21:00 same thing as er voc karen said it was too grey she said she didn't like france <[>mm oh really it was too grey and and karen said mind you it's the middle of winter at the moment isn't it over there yes but i mean karen's been there a while has oh she would have been there through the winter too yes <{><[>maybe she was there a different <[>she said it was TOO grey they weren't very pleased with <.>fr do you know much about france no <{1><[1>nothing about it <{2><[2>well a little bit of very rusty school knowledge about things <[1>no no <[2>no oh yeah <{><[>but nothing about it itself haven't you actually BEEN there <[>voc no no no no <{><[>i've never been there <[>oh yes so she wasn't er so we thought that was quite interesting carol and i that they both thought it was too grey yeah well maybe karen will feel a bit different in the springtime <.>when but she loved kendorf um she'd been up that way and stayed with delaney's friends who'd taken her everywhere <{><[>that will be delaney's <[>oh no this is helena yeah helena <{><[>i mean which was good you know and they'd taken her down to london which seems a long way to me <&>22:00 <[>yeah yes and they'd done this and done that and she was very happy there so THAT was good and oh it was nice to get a letter from marcia cos i haven't heard from her for oh i mean a year you know a hell of a long time <,> so that was nice and i've written so that's why i wrote back to her <,> and other than that other than that really stay home all day mary came came over and had lunch with me SHE had scones and i <.>had i fried <.>t two scones and had an egg with them but she didn't want that she just had about five scones without butter inhales first time i've made scones for god for years i was going to say it would be a while since you've made scones you usually make pikelets don't you i know cos they're easier but i wondered why but i know why now because unless i go put the bowl in the sink <,> i can't word believe i can't stir things oh i can believe that my shoulder doesn't work properly yeah you need it down at a proper level for you and your benches would be too <{><[>high once you had a bowl in <[>no even in <&>23:00 the sink it wasn't easy but still i made them they oh word maybe got a few left over here <,> so er that was you know that was quite nice <,> and um anyway she was called one of her kids wanted to take her out so they actually came here for her and her grandson came to the door and i looked at him i thought now are you a PAPERboy who are you and i said oh then i looked out and his mum was at the curb oh i said hello granny's here cos they call her granny course that's so <.>o granny sounds MUCH older than nana laughs and course she's only sixty one right so i said said yeah granny's in here now so course she hustled up and she went oh i feel awful dear and i said don't be silly go they said didn't she want to go to down to the shops it was just down to countdown or something so she said no take the opportunity so she <.>wh when she came back and she bought me flowers cos she left so quickly well you did okay then laughs yeah word and i didn't care course taking the opportunity when it arises laughs she went down oh she did a bit of shopping word so cos i get on well with mary right <&>24:00 oh i mean we understand each other we've both been even more than ESME you know you don't see much of esme these days oh i talk long cos she doesn't move out of <{><[>her house she doesn't go over to er mary goes over to HER and talks to HER but she doesn't move out much <[>no right out of that place at all except to go to the doctor is she very mobile at the moment um not really oh she has her moments you see her walking out to the gate and that and she LOOKS okay but that doesn't always <,> tell you much you know no talk to her occasionally on the phone but er <,> she would never really be this friendly oh this is funny since i was in bed with that sore leg with the ulcers it's <.>proba you couldn't get to see HER then i guess no <{><[>course now i can't because even to go to mary's which i've done do once in six months it's my breathing <[>yeah yeah just walking up that bit of a hill i know that sounds ridiculous laughs doesn't even look like a hill i KNOW but it IS <&>25:00
