<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>1:05 hello? hi there it's monique here i sort of guessed it was so i went and turned off the <.>wireless er the t v <{><[>before you started <[>oh good on you <{><[>good on you <[><.>so save time yes no no no don't panic about that um <.>w i'm sorry about not getting through last night it was just a little thing about logistics because julie wasn't organised with the bits and pieces yes so i sprung it on her i think she was a bit surprised that i was so organised both laugh she's over here nodding her head and saying oh yes i was right laughs so um yeah now did you look up those oatcake recipes no i didn't look up those oatcake recipes that went right out of my head worrying about this other thing which i read an article about it and <.>th there was a bit in the southland times <{><[>and do you think i can find it and i can't remember it <[>mm what was the article about voc it was about <.>the the differences between <&>2:00 the north er island and the south island and the things we talked about you know <{1><[1>voc <.>their their way <.>of of um of er er er mentioning things you see down here we talk about a crib <{2><[2>and in the north island they talk about a bach <[1>oh right right <[2>right oh right yes yes yes and voc we were talking about it <.>at at er daycare today and the lady that er takes it er nellie mcmurtrie mm she comes from australia and she said that people that go over from new zealand voc very soon fall into the voc the um er the australian idiom and it's how're ya mate tut oh right <{><[>yes yes <[>gidday mate gidday mate is the <.>w the one <{1><[1>they say and um er in the north island every every sentence seems to finish with eh <{2><[2>find eh <[1>yes yes <[2>laughs no that's not true <.>i i <{><[>didn't <.>f I don't talk like that laughs no <&>3:00 <[>voc i well <.>y you don't but laughs so many do no there <{1><[1>ARE certain people who do say that <{2><[2>you're quite right yes <[1>voc <[2>and you know it's <.>a er i think it comes <.>m a lot from the maori <.>da <.>th the system <.>of yes er <{><[>speaking <[>yes i i was tempted to say that but i was a bit reluctant to say that but you know a LOT of them do um <{><[>they do say that yes <[>voc voc it may be that that's the form their speech takes where they they sort of repeat a thing yes yes well it doesn't really matter <{1><[1>now well can you actually remember how you <.>w <.>y now what was that thing that your your you were talking about <.>yes the other day when we were talking about oatcakes when they were <{2><[2>putting it round the lemonade bottles <[1>no <[2>oh <.>i voc <{><[>voc <[>what was that called they <.>m they made farrels f a r r e l s i presume right voc <.>i i only saw this done when i was a child about oh five six oh yes and <.>the <.>i <.>it it would be made with fine oatmeal <&>4:00 right and it was rolled very very thin look when they made it out of <.>ro fine <&>pronounced find oatmeal did they actually put um baking soda anything with it or or did they just have <.>it you know just add the water or what um oh it it would <.>ha <.>h it would have fat in it oh dripping <{><[>yes <[>it <.>would oh <.>it well it could have been dripping <{><[>yes and <.>i it would have salt in it <[>yes <.>i yes <{><[>yes <[>because er voc they they voc er i'm sure that that all the the good taste didn't come from the er <{><[>tut from the <.>thing and they were a most delightful <.>eat thing to eat with a good voc a good slash of butter and honey <[>mm yeah oh right now listen did they ever stick stuff down the middle of those things or was that where you put the honey and stuff no well no you just broke it off in <{><[>bits <[>oh right right and i imagine that they were large large squares of er <{1><[1>rolled out and voc oh it was just a different way of of ornamenting <{2><[2>them but <.>i i'm sure that i have seen them <.>a at a show years ago <[1>mm <&>5:00 <[2>word mm you know yes voc <.>the the entry would be <.>s so many voc i think they called them farrels of of of oatcake mm or <{1><[1>it may have just been the way of presenting them inhales <{2><[2>voc <[1>yes <[2>no no i was interested in asking because of the fact that um oh the book that biddy sent over from germany and <.>they they really into barley <.>any using barley and using oatmeal they use that um rice and millet believe it or not millet's terrible have you ever tried it no i haven't <{1><[1>but er <.>r <{2><[2>er er er <.>ro er not rose elspeth er kingston <[1>oh <[2>hiccups yes is not allowed any any wheat products oh RIGHT well she'd just LOVE this diet <{><[>laughs <[><.>and and er she er i i saw rice biscuits in <&>6:00 here oh they're brilliant er <.>th they were <.>li little fine thin things mm and er i got some and gave them to millicent because i thought well there is something and apparently SHE had seen them in the shop and SHE got some mm mm but we've never really seen them since down here but er they tell me they do make them but they don't seem to you know er it's the sort of thing that you would actually <{1><[1>have to travel away from your little store where you are and you'd have to go to gore and you'd have go in <{2><[2>to <.>w bigger store and you'd have to you know you really hunt along the the the shelves <{3><[3>for those sorts of things <[1>yes <[2>yes <[3>yes <.>well you can get them in all different flavours but i'll tell you what the most satisfying one is having it with banana and um tut <.>a <.>y <.>ha just putting half a banana on top <{><[>and it's wonderful <[>tut <.>well er <.>th the exhales voc the other day i got a different kind of pack they were voc quite a <.>l quite quite tall they were almost like um <&>7:00 in <.>engl er er they were like crumpets er that that <{1><[1>that that make of things they were each one was fairly thick <{2><[2>and i think they had bacon or something <.>th in them <[1>mm yes yes <[2>yes yes yes <.>th you can get a whole lot of <{1><[1>varieties you're better to stick to the plain one <{2><[2>though that's better for you <[1>and <.>sh <.>i <[2>so i <.>gav i got i got those too and i gave left them <{><[>with millicent because <.>it it must be an awful problem <.>when mind you elspeth says when she comes she brings all her things with her now <[>mm mm yeah she has to yeah wheat is wheat is quite a tricky one but er i've got this oh i should really perhaps send it down to um millicent but this book is really top notch aha but the interesting thing is it looks like all my problems well you know how i've been going to and fro the doctor and <{><[>stuff it looks like ALL my problems extend from one rotten tooth <[>yes OH and when did you discover this well i <.>potter pottered <&>pronounced as pottled back to the doctor today er the dentist today <{><[>and i had a root canal done <&>8:00 away back in march <[>yes yes and i was you know just finishing off paying the bill and i said to him oh hey you know i've still got my problem and so he had a check and do you know what he said no he said now look he said your tooth is three dimensional BUT the x ray <&>pronounced as x a ray can only take a two dimensional you take one on the inside you take one on the outside and he said it is POSSIBLE that the x ray <&>pronounced as x a ray has missed OH your problem and you see i've been going back and back and back to him? to the dentist <{><[>and saying but my tooth is not right <[>yes yes and so um tut no it's not right so i'm on i'm back what am i back on i'm at an antiinflammatory and hopefully i can settle the tooth down and if it doesn't settle down they've got to redo the whole thing again OH and <{><[>that'll cost you x x x <&>9:00 <[>word NO he said he'd do it free of charge oh he's got a guilty conscience no it's not a case of that i just think it's um i think that's part of your professionalism you know if a person you know comes in with a problem and they don't fix it then and the problem's recurring the fact that i've been going back and back and saying HEY this tooth is still not right i'm just in the same square as where i was when i came to you yes well <{><[>i <.>s i <.>s <[>then they have to redress it i sincerely hope that er er my my er my man that's been busy wilson brothers have been doing the garage door <{1><[1>and things like that see well they they <{2><[2>have a responsibility <{3><[3>like that i had <.>someone two men here all one morning and they played with the garage door <[1>mm <[2>hiccups <[3>laughs sorry mm and they they they brought me um tut er voc um voc i've had two different er plugs er <&>10:00 plugs as er plug and cords brought for <{1><[1>the jug and in the finish they took the jug away <{2><[2>and er er er they tell me they've fixed it but they forgot to bring it back <{3><[3>the last time they visited so i'm beginning to think their professionalism's a bit <{4><[4>lacking laughs and <.>i it's months it's MONTHS that i've i've <{5><[5>been without a jug <[1>mm <[2>mm <[3>oh right <[4>laughs yes <[5>well yes it wouldn't hurt you to ring up and say now look um we do you know when i purchase a thing like a jug or a kettle you know please please <{><[>that's what i want <[>well this one you see was given to me and they didn't they know jolly well it didn't come from their shop <{><[>i suppose <[>oh right no well they should still have you know there is <{1><[1>an element of you just hand it in and you expect it to be repaired and stuff but never mind <{2><[2>it's just one of those things now i'm gonna i've got i'm gonna spring one on you can you remember your worst day at school as a pupil <[1>of course they should <[2>yes well i can remember er one day er er when voc <&>11:00 when my temper got the better of me both laugh cos <{><[>this is the cos the sixth <.>years <[>oh that's i reckon that's unusual for <{><[>you <[>we we had er we had a tut a relieving teacher <{1><[1>our our normal teacher was a very a very good teacher and er a man who had had a war injury and he had a wooden leg so <{2><[2>he was away for some reason it may have been to get additional things done to his leg but anyway we had this mister <,> <.>wheel wheeler i think his name was which is i shouldn't say but however he'll probably be dead now <{3><[3>and er <[1>mm <[2>mm <[3>laughs long <{><[>since mother laughs <[>laughs and er er by that time i must have been probably either in standard five or standard six because i was tall and voc the the er the classroom was laid off in steps and stairs <{><[>voc at about each rise was about four inches but we <&>12:00 had new desks instead of having the long desks with the the er er four inkwell holes along with the long desk and the and a form to sit on we had progressed up to that kind you know that had you sat in pairs and the seats clanged up <[>mm mm <{><[>mm <[>you <.>kno you know the kind yes <{><[>yes <[>well anyway i was sitting right in the corner of the room and my best friend was beside me and we were were we were probably the top er the top girls as far as as er er er you know athletes were concerned and it was our duty to pick pick teams so that when we went out out to play mm er <.>w er we had the teams picked and we we knew where we were and you could gather them together and the game was in progress in no time whatever it <{><[>was we played our own we played our own version of um tut er of basketball um well it was throwing a ball it <&>13:00 was a running game that we played and the aim of it was just to keep the ball from the other side <[>yes mm and we ranged up and down the ground there was no posts <.>s to score through or anything like that oh right but er er the competition was <.>h was hot and strong and er voc i was i probably had finished my sums or whatever it was i was doing and we were very busy er er concocting these <{1><[1>teams and it this men <.>t asked er told us to be quiet <{2><[2>so er we were within about er selecting the last four people for the teams anyway and er sure enough laughs this one er <.>m er margaret said something to me and i said something back and i got caught <[1>laughs <[2>mm laughs so laughs he he was quite original he said er he picked on me and i was the only one picked on you see mm and he said right go out out and run three times round the school tut so i went out and <&>14:00 i i was mad mad furious because it was only me mm <{><[>mm <[>the other girl'd escaped <,> and when i got back to the room mm er er he said er wait and this was in in the front i was kept in front of the room it was like in front of everybody and everybody was sitting there with their arms their arms folded you know and oh <.>i and he said now er <,> er say that piece of poetry we were supposed to you were supposed to learn last night and it so happened that it was the burial of sir john moore at corunna mhm er you know one of these war pieces we buried him darkly in dead of night the sword laughs the the the sods with their bayonets turning laughs right well BOY i was so furious by that time i rattled through that thing i i knew it and i i <.>buried nobody's ever buried sir <{1><[1>john faster than i did <&>15:00 laughs he jolly well knew that he'd word he'd made an impression laughs but i i've never forgotten it but when i laugh when i think of it now <{2><[2>laughs <[1>laughs oh right <[2>yeah right <&>15:15
