<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side two <&>2:22 oh right porirua community questions whoa do you like living in porirua yeah i do yep what's what say what you do find about it what's good about it oh i like the um <,> i like the closeknitness of the <.>en of um <,> of the locals you know um <.>i <.>it it's a real secure sort of feeling <,> just knowing everybody i think eh and and the fact that <.>i you know your kids can pretty much walk around here and feel fairly safe <&>3:00 yeah <,,><&>5 yeah <,> it's good living round here that's that's the thing about living round here mm <,> are there um are there any changes you'd like to see <,> like any facilities or anything you'd like built word yeah i would actually i'd like to see some sort of um <,> <.>a a sort of park provided for the kids voc else or or some sort of activity centre for the the smaller kids where they can go yeah <,,><&>3 <{><[>there's none around here are there <[>um not really <,> i mean there's a field down there but there's there's no real there's nothing play for them i'd like to <{><[>see some some sort of things recreational facilities provided for the children anyway <[>mm yeah <,> but oh that that's about it really <,,><&>5 what about jobs do you think there are enough <&>4:00 jobs for people locally inhales no i don't no i don't what do you <.>s um <,> if you had the er sort a <,> the thing to do it you had the sort of job of doing it what would you do to improve the situation as far as jobs and <{><[>unemployment <[>yeah in this area um <,,><&>4 i'm not sure really <,> i'm not sure what i'd do <,,><&>5 i think <.>th <.>i it's obviously a basic problem first you know a a lack of education but there doesn't seem to be a real desire <.>o or um it doesn't seem to be encouraged yeah amongst i don't know if it's polynesians but amongst um like it doesn't <.>s it <.>does it's not seen as a big deal to <.>g to really get an education to survive mm like i know a lot of my cousins know they can <&>5:00 survive even if they don't get a job yeah and get along quite well and they do yeah <,,> yeah that's right yeah <,,><&>3 i'm not sure what i'd do to tell you the truth <,,><&>5 oh <,,><&>5 what else is there oh do you think there are enough things provided for people to do in their spare time around here no <,> no i don't there's no real um <,> like if you're not involved with the church or with the marae then you <.>j all you're left with is sports and you've either got a <,> i mean there's obviously the basketball and rugby but there's no other sort of other hobby clubs either you know you know you just think nothing like um horse riding or archery or any of those sort of hobbies yeah <&>6:00 there's none of those that are very local <,> er sort of whatever running club mm <,,> i see what you mean a variation <.>of mm <,,><&>4 word um <,,><&>4 do you think there are enough meeting places <,> and things like that around here meeting voc ? yeah places to meet like halls and oh yeah i suppose there are <,,><&>4 mm <,,><&>5 yeah <.>i yeah i'd say there were has the area changed much since you first can remember yeah it has definitely has i mean houses have gone up where there never used be yeah um well we've obviously got the new school down here <,> it's definitely a lot more busier <&>7:00 yeah um <,,><&>3 have you seen all them flats built down here <{><[>down there <[>yep yeah oh yeah <,> i remember before that shop was there yeah yeah i can remember that <{><[>too yeah that word <[>yeah it's changed quite a bit it's still basically the same but you know with the new houses and that there's a lot more people and i think that's what's really changed the area a lot too is the people yeah i don't really know so many people now mm i know the obvious ones that were here before but people come through the pa <.>i i've never seen before yeah and that's a real change you know before you pretty much knew everybody <,> not anymore know the old <,> places next to the <.>fl flats next to old er <&>name and that? yeah <{><[>yeah <[>yeah <&>name yeah people just come in and out of them all the time eh yep museum there where the museum is yeah yeah <,,> <&>8:00 yeah it's definitely changed <,,><&>4 i remember <.>bef i remember the times we used to play out on the road down here on this road by the marae play up and down this road oh yeah <{><[>yeah <[>and er play rugby and that on it boy <.>the you never see that now nah that sort of thing <,,><&>4 HECK that makes me sound old laughs <{><[>laughs <[>laughs oh i suppose yeah a little bit i've seen a little bit of a change yeah <,,> it's all these things going on down here now down on porirua that whitireia <{><[>and all that yeah <[>mm mm yeah polytech <,> even some of these industries some of the buildings down <{1><[1>here like the rec centre and that i remember before the rec centre was there helping to raise money for that <,,><&>4 <{2><[2>todd motors <[1>yeah <[2>do you use that much pardon do you go go down there much the rec centre? yeah oh yeah now and then have a light run at basketball <{><[>that's about it <[>yeah <.>you are <.>y you playing er rugby this year or <&>9:00 yeah yeah going nothing serious though <{><[>just <,> probably seconds senior seconds <[>oh yeah who're you going to play for norths norths yeah <,> i got too much my time's too valuable to <.>d to concentrate on sport yeah got other priorities <,,> yeah sports <{><[>is just a side line <[>word how do you think they'll do this year well i think they'll do well are they going to have kiwa lane going is he gonna yeah come round and coach or player coach he's player coach is he oh he's actually playing yeah they've actually got a coach oh yeah but he's he's gonna play <{><[>yeah <[>oh that'll be good for <{><[>them <[>yeah it is <,> be excellent for the morale er hemi's going to run with them this year yeah yeah rangi you know rangi eh mohi is he back he's coming back is he gonna play <{><[>mm <[>oh jeez he'll be good eh yeah <,> he's gonna run with them oh yeah they'll have a good team <,,><&>4 <&>10:00 what about heke is he playing nah he's in auckland now is he mm when did he go up there about <.>f oh <.>fo four or five months ago word yeah moved up <{><[>there with his job <[>word he did he sell that house has he sold his house down here the one down here <{1><[1>on the corner? yeah he sold it <{2><[2>sold it to er ria russell <,> yeah ria and john russell <,> bit of a shame <{3><[3>but his wife's from auckland eh <[1>yeah <[2>yeah <[3>mm yeah and she's always wanted to go back so oh is that right yeah <,,> did she go and stay up their <.>pl up er with her <.>fr er family no they bought a house up there yeah yeah closer to her eh no her mother died last year oh i see so it's a lot closer for her to be next to her father and that mm <,,><&>3 yeah <,,> how long have they been down there for down down oh gee six years yeah six seven years maybe <,> yeah it'd be seven years oh no it'd be longer than that <{><[>heck <[>yeah <&>11:00 that would be how old's their boy eight years yeah must be eight or nine years then sh heck had enough selling laughs oh i've got these um <&>rustling of pages um do you think the use of the maori language should be encouraged yes i do who do you think should be responsible for encouraging the use of maori <,> all parents maori parents iwi authorities other maori organisations schools polytechs universities government should i <.>jus pick only one of those oh no any any ones you want i think all parents for a starter and then <,,> for encouraging maori and then the government <&>12:00 yeah <,,><&>7 what do you think about teaching maori in schools do you think it should be compulsory inhales exhales do i think it should be no <,,><&>5 what about taha maori er yeah i think that should be <,,><&>3 i think there needs to be that cultural sort of <{><[><.>a awareness anyway <[>yeah yeah <,,> how do you think the kohanga's getting on i think it's good i think it's doing well mm it's definitely a good idea do you think <.>it um <,,><&>3 do you think it needs anything to improve it mm i'm not really sure how it runs or or what the situation is mm oh yeah fair enough <,,><&>3 do you think maori <&>13:00 should be an official language in new zealand <,,><&>3 er <,,><&>4 do i think it should be an official language <,,><&>4 yeah i do actually <,,><&>4 why <,,> voc it's <.>b well mainly because there's so many maoris here that er <,> not only is it a part of them but because it's it's um <,> they're sure a lot more comfortable <.>express oh as an official language mm <,,><&>8 oh gee <,,> that's like beside english having english and maori <&>14:00 <,,> yeah yeah well it's it's actually a way of encouraging it isn't it mm i mean to keep it alive you've got to actually encourage it in those sort of ways yeah <,,><&>5 mm good one <,,> do you think the maori language is for maori people only or for all new zealanders word i think it's for all new zealanders myself and do you think knowing maori helps pakehas understand maori people oh definitely definitely mm <,> choice <,> have you um have you had any scrapes with death close close calls with er death in car accidents or anything like this you mean have i myself have <{><[>i been involved in anything close to death <[>yes yeah oh not <.>r oh <,> oh nah not <&>15:00 really not what i consider close to death i've been trapped in a couple of fires but <.>no not <{><[>what i call close to death <[>is that right yeah when was this oh in a factory fire in newtown <{><[>had a four by two come down on me it it had burnt through collapsed and it pinned me in <[>word was it burning oh nah <.>i it had actually been burnt out but because it had been burnt through it had broken at one end yeah and it just pinned me on the ground but that's it i've been in a few car accidents that <,> nah not even then i didn't think i was close to death <{><[>nah i wouldn't say i have <[>yeah so <.>w what about in your job is that is do you do all this um <,> do you <.>act what do you do for your training and oh you do three months training to begin with just to get the basics and you you you learn how to fight different sort of fires like some you can fight with water and some you got to fight with sand powders um you learn to handle chemicals different sort of chemicals <{><[>spills and that intensive first aid course <,> very intensive first aid course <&>16:00 um inhales and then you when when you do your further training you get to the stage of delivering babies in emergencies those sort of things <[>yeah jeez um <,,> no that's about it really <,,><&>4 how long have you been doing that for four years and you've finished all your training yeah i have now <{><[>yep you do there's <.>d you know in the job you go through about four years of training i mean you're always learning in it <[>yeah yeah but specific training courses they give you yeah i'm finished <,> after four years <.>y you should be <.>f completed everything you have many accidents out here heaps yeah <.>ou heaps out this way along this motorway yeah <{><[>yeah <[>oh cos yous have to go them now eh yeah yeah yeah have you been to the scenes of some them <{><[>been first on the scene <[>oh heaps heaps yeah heaps of them my first inhales my first day on out here i went to two <,> yeah two <&>17:00 two bad ones i've seen some terrible things in them eh <.>wh what was the reason that you had to go there was it the gas c n g was it because the c n g or car accidents yeah they're our responsibility are they <{><[>not <[>yeah yeah m o t ambulance nothing oh yeah it is m o t's responsibility sorry but as far as cutting them out and um like when they get trapped and killed and that we cut them out and everything we've got all the rescue gear yeah yeah oh i see yeah <,> <{><[>yeah this guy was um he's <,> telling us about this girl that died down here who hit the back of this <,> um <,> a car carrier trucks you know it was parked along the main road there <[>yeah oh yeah yeah he was a he was a sort of volunteer fireman from up there right happened round there and he was he was driving along and it had just happened he said he said oh he said oh yeah yeah <&>18:00 you just got to pretend they're not human eh and just yeah get into it <,,><&>3 oh i'm lucky though i grew up with with the handling death you know with the marae yeah always viewing dead people <,> so it wasn't too bad for me but inhales like when i joined i joined with a guy <,> whose first accident was that peter button case when he died in the helicopter oh you're kidding nah and he just freaked out over it that sort of thing eh cause he'd never seen any <,> dead person <{><[>before oh it's all right comes with the job <,> it's part of the territory <[>yeah yeah so you do you do get er there there's that thing eh you do having having contact and that with er death and that oh yeah earlier on i was um when i was <.>s sixteen we had this i was going to my grandfather's funeral and there was these people <,> who were <&>19:00 um sort of staying up there as well <,,> first funeral i've ever been and i <.>look er she's a pakeha first funeral she'd ever been to yeah word first time eh yeah yeah oh wow and she was <,> must have been eighteen nineteen years old is that right yeah <,> it was a big thing yeah right <,,><&>4 so um <,,> <.>y you've just <.>gonna do you play any basketball as well or just nah just rugby what else are you doing playing er touch rugby and nah no i've had so many accidents over the <,> when i when i came home my first year home i went into rugby senior rugby and i broke both my shoulders did you yeah jeez broke both so i gave it a rest and then the next year when i went back what i broke both my hands broke this ankle and i ripped this cartilage and this i just finished tearing it again he had they had to operate here <{><[>oh twice once with an arthroscope where they cut <&>20:00 a bit out but then i ripped it again and they <.>cu had to <.>cu open it right up and take it out mm that was all in one year <[>jeez yeah both hands my ankle and my knee yeah last year sh no it was the year before sorry and so i <{><[>just gave it a rest for a year so i'm gonna go back this year and have a run again <[>yeah yeah <,> word you want to know if you want to go back <{><[>laughs <[>oh yeah oh demon for punishment mate yeah what about you what do you do oh no we're just playing soccer me and er greg <{><[>in a soccer team <[>oh yeah varsity nah nah just up here you know locals oh yeah yeah play on sunday and in er word league word <{><[>word yeah <[>right right so it's really social inhales but er i always thought oh this year we'll do a bit of training for it and something no it's good i saw him at the varsity the other day yeah he's um doing one two one oh is he yeah that's he did one oh one one oh two last year down here oh right yeah i did it the year before it's <&>21:00 good though it's a good course word <,> i enjoyed <{><[>it it's good down here doing it down here because um <,,><&>3 oh down to varsity word it's just heaps of people lecture theatre <[>yeah yeah right right you know down here you've got close contact <{><[>with lecturer and <[>mm yeah i thought it might be like that yeah plus it's a lot closer too obviously yeah quite handy i was working down g e c when that came eh oh <{><[>yeah <[>first time i went down i kept on going down there <,> no it's good though yeah i really enjoyed it it's really intense though eh it's really intense is that right well see i've only we've only been in it for a week or so mm oh you know they um like the work is sort of everything's jammed in to yeah six months you know there's a lot work jammed into six months <&>21:55
