<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>tape one side two <&>28:03 family relationships do you have a lot of family or relations that live around here hundreds laughs hundreds laughs <,> do you all get together at christmas time we had a family reunion this christmas didn't we ian yes we did what happened we had a lovely time beautiful <{><[>absolutely word <[>nothing just laid around talked and um laughs whereabouts did you have it down at the marae aha <{1><[1>anything organised you know were there organised <{2><[2>events as part of that <[1>mm <[2><&>sighs no we had a wedding tut we had a wedding on the saturday we had a sunday lunch on the sunday in church monday was christmas day mm oh right and we all had christmas together tut and we had another couple of days there and um <,> they took the little kids to the <,> swimming pool and um we didn't organise <{><[>anything cos it's too much hassle <[>word right we thought we'd just all get together and er whoever wanted to do that picked up all the kids and just took them yeah did you all have a hakari together on christmas day <{><[>yes <[>mm what sort of things did you have for your hakari everything laughs everything you can think of <,> we had it one of her grandsons is matthew white the all black you know oh yes <{1><[1>that's her <{2><[2>grandson <[1>yeah <[2>he got married on the saturday aha to <{1><[1>word <{2><[2>mm <[1>down at the marae <[2>yes mm married a french girl from france yes laughs well i mean that might seem <{><[>word <[>laughs he lives in france oh does he yes when did he shift over there um he went there in <,,><&>3 gee what's this about nineteen eighty eight mm no eighty seven mm? he went on a tour and he stayed behind he went there to play rugby for biarritz with um <,,> tut what's that fullback's name? oh gallagher no the french fullback oh heck oh hang i can't think of his name <&>sighs he's assistant coach this year <,,><&>3 blanco <{><[>oh yes <[>oh yes blanco and he took him to his club and he played there so did he stay in france to play rugby yes and is that what he's still doing yes still playing rugby mm he's doing he teaches english at one of the colleges in biarritz oh and word in spare time he does he's learning to do marketing oh word that and did he use to be be a teacher when he was here yes he taught at er ngati toa school oh yes primary school? yes oh mm and he's <.>s taught at er intermediate school out the hutt <,> taita oh right intermediate yep have you got any other relatives living overseas half of my children are in sydney have you ever been there yes what's it like nice for a holiday but? um there's plenty of opportunity for young people but i wouldn't like to live there <,> <{><[>because because i like um the family atmosphere that we've got here i love it here i love it here because you know we've got the marae there anything that's on we can go down and tut sit with our with our own age people and er i enjoy the things we do down there <[>why not she's had seventeen children this woman seventeen? and brought up about another <{><[>seven or eight <[>laughs <{><[>laughs <[>can you remember all their names <{><[>laughs <[>sure laughs <{><[>no i had fifteen and i adopted two made it seventeen <[>word goodness <{><[>me <[>but then yeah <{><[>and now she's still got all her mokopunas <[>how still no yeah i was going to say talking about mokopunas <{1><[1>word bring you a carton of <{2><[2>biscuits <{3><[3>laughs <[1>laughs <[2>laughs <[3>laughs <[3>laughs just as well i don't live here then <{><[>laughs <[>yeah <&>32:12 <&>last minute of this side not transcribed <&>tape two side one <&>0:10 <{><[>so all fifteen of them <[>word all fifteen of them were born at saint helen's hospital how old's your oldest he's he's <,> nineteen forty two so he's he's um forty eight eh buddy and what about your youngest youngest of mine own not the one i adopted tane gee <{1><[1>laughs <,,> he's um <,> he's not thirty yet <,,> might be just thirty <{2><[2>him and him and matthew same <.>a <,,> nah tane's about er year older than matthew <[1>laughs <[2>mm mm <,,> <&>1:00 right <{><[>and <[>might be thirty one do any of them live round here um there's only er three here <,> one lives just down the road one lives up rangitui one lives at titahi bay oh right and i've got one in um opunake and one in hamilton mhm tut all the rest are in australia goodness me so what do the ones in aussie do oh ben ben's a ben's in um tauranga <{><[>aha <[>mm he's in tauranga and at the moment he's at massey university so what's he studying? he's studying business management and accounting aha mm what about the ones in australia what sort of jobs do they do they they're they're doing er block laying <{><[>oh right <[>yep they're forming a company mm oh <{1><[1>so it's a family <{2><[2>company <[1>word <[2>yeah family yeah er yes because <{><[>i <[>they're very successful <{><[>mm <[>mm i saw something on t v the other night about how the the cost of living in australia has risen tut oh it has and so quite a few kiwis are coming home <{1><[1>again what about your kids <{2><[2>any <,> decisions like that <[1>yep <[2><&>sighs um one's coming home nga and <&>2:00 matthew nga voc nga's coming home oh yeah yeah she's she's coming home for christmas then they're going to france to see matthew and then paul's getting made redundant in april and then they're coming home to live mm <{><[>right <[>they've had a they've had enough judith's on her way home from hamilton laughs is that right yeah she she was she was waiting for the job jude is the um sales rep for tegel poultry in hamilton oh yeah she does all that area voc hamilton cambridge all round there you know and now she's been offered the job in wellington word so she's taking it <,> tut <{><[>so <[>what about david is he david well david's unemployed just at the minute <{><[>there's there's just no work in hamilton so <[>oh right right i think they'll be glad to get back yeah what sort of job does he normally do he does <{><[>um detailing laughs <[>word he's a draftsman <.>h he's a draftsman oh <{><[>right <[>yeah he was a draftsman for the railways before they went away then they went up to <.>t <&>3:00 tauranga and he was er working there and then he left the railways and he worked for steel and tube aha and then he transferred over to hamilton and um tut he worked for steel and tube there and then he went out on his own but there's just no building going on in hamilton right so if there's no building going on you've got no work <{><[>right <[>right right yeah so it's lucky jude's got quite a good job mm pays good money and they've got <,,> two two children at church college so he he was a bit er <,,> um thinking hard about coming back cos <{><[>he if they <.>g if they come back they'll have to be boarders <[>word <{><[>mm <[>does that cost a lot it's about um just just <.>o it's two thousand dollars <{><[>a year? <[>it's a lot cheaper than <{><[>word college <[>a year it's a lot cheaper than er te aute mm te aute's just over three thousand and is that full board and keep for two thousand dollars mm <&>4:00 full board that's pretty good you know <{><[>mm <[>that that's for members right mm yeah because <.>con considering what kids eat aha <{><[>yep <[>mm mm that alone <{><[>would be <[>it's full board and they get trips you know if they get into teams they um word all included mm <,> gee mm <.>y your kids the the fifteen children are they the children of your first husband or <{><[>are word husband <[>yeah yeah i'll i've only been married <.>t about <,> two year eight eh? times gone eh eight years? yeah eight years oh heck i thought two years yeah we were both <.>th old my husband died and his wife died so oh right so we voc we've been friends all yeah all our lives <{1><[1>the four of us used to go oh <{2><[2>and him and my first husband are first cousins <[1>relations <[2>mm oh right tut mm so it's just mm oh that's nice mm yeah better guy you wouldn't meet too <{><[>word word <[>yeah i could of got on all right cos my <.>ki i got <&>5:00 plenty of kids you know and i had plenty of things to do but he was real lonely mm but it's nice to have the companionship <{><[>i bet <[>mm oh it's good we we <.>g <{1><[1>we get on well <{2><[2>laughs we go to all the rugby we go to a lot of rugby cos he likes rugby and i do <[1>word <[2>mm mm and then we both athletic families and um we we have the same interests at the marae so <{><[>it's really good <[>word your first husband how old was he when he died fifty six and was he sick had bad heart oh yes mm yeah and so did he have a heart attack or <,,> yeah <{><[>had a heart attack but he had an enlarged heart and it just you know he was just kind of living from day to day <[>word mm yeah and how old was your youngest child at that time um <,,> sniffs gee <,,><&>3 exhales tane's twenty <&>6:00 three now and er he's been <,> dead for eleven years that must have quite tough on you when he you know when he first died cos the kids would have still been quite young yep i'd two the two were still at school right mm and how many would you have still had at home at that time <,,> you know what maoris are like if they can't find a house they're home laughs laughs she's an unusual woman <{><[>word <[>laughs i was only supposed to have two at home laughs but you had? but then er one family had <.>t to get out of move out of some place and they'd oh come home till we find a house and <{1><[1>you know and then you'd have a house full and then it'd go empty again and someone else would be er out of a house so laughs <{2><[2>inhales <[1>yeah <[2>yeah they're home with all their kids and laughs mind you if they're grown up they should have been a bit of a help to you as well? oh yeah yeah what about now do they ever sort of move in for a while <&>7:00 yep even though we got nowhere to sleep so we stack the mattresses up put them on the floor shift the table down there yeah we have we have mattresses all here all in the sitting room it's all right in the summer we put the tent up right word the tent otherwise although they still want to come i said you know we haven't got any room you have to sleep on the floor there's no beds oh doesn't worry them long as we're all together <{><[>laughs <[>and what about your husband's family do they come round too well he's only got three and they er not they always come but not to stay yeah not much sometimes janet comes and stays a <{><[>night <[>mm and are they local or are they yeah all local yeah <.>w his son just lives across the road here oh yes one laughs yeah yeah mm and the other one lives just down the road from ian mm aha it's quite a <{><[>tightknit community isn't it <[>coughs it is small <{><[>community are there many nonngati toa people living here <[>yes yes <[>it is yeah a few now never used to be but there are a few you know different people have gone and <&>8:00 sold their houses to er outsiders but they won't move away either eh they love it here the locals? <{><[>mm <[>mm yeah no the the people who <{><[>word <[>people who move in <{><[>laughs <[>oh is that right yeah they love it yeah when my son was selling his house which is just two two doors <.>al down here um the land agent said to him um tut you know it's his house was a bit dear and er and er you know if you lived in a different community you would get more for it it's because of the community and he tried to tell him this is the safest community in new zealand here <{><[>word <[>walk out and leave your doors open voc walk out and leave your doors open our kids play on the street till ten oclock at night you know because everyone's related <,> and and that are there any shops out here <{><[>word <[>there's one there's one up the road there a <{><[>bit <[>what a dairy is it <{1><[1>yeah <{2><[2>just a dairy <[1>mm <[2>yeah yeah what about what's the bus service like oh it's all right <.>you but you're close enough to walk to the shops from here to <{><[>the centre? how long does it take to walk to the centre? <&>9:00 <[>mm er about um takes me just over fifteen minutes oh that's a nice walk <{><[>that's yeah not too much <[>yeah <[>word yeah we walk down often yeah especially on days like this eh mm mm good day word <{><[>word <[>do the shopping and then ring up for someone to come <{><[>laughs <[>mm mm how many of the the ngati toa people would have <.>move would have moved away i mean what proportion of your young people still live round here there's a lot are there mm <{><[>mm <[>mm a lot word <{><[>word <[>so at your reunion did heaps come back for the reunion <{><[>yeah <[>yeah yeah mm well it started off it was only supposed to be my family right then then his kids go oh we're coming to have christmas with you so in the end we shifted it up to to my husband's father's so then it included all them too oh i see <{1><[1>laughs <{2><[2>word <[1>laughs <[2>her her yeah her husband her first husband and my wife's mother are brother and <{><[>sister <[>brother and <{><[>sister yeah <[>oh right we weren't gonna <{1><[1>word word <{2><[2>word <[1>voc <[2>everyone word oh they heard that we were <&>10:00 having er christmas down at the marae they said oh we'll come and have christmas with you gee er all right and everyone i bumped into said oh we want to come and have christmas with you too and oh well we'll put it up to <&>name mm and that voc because he's their grandfather too <{1><[1>that's my husband's father so then it included all these other families <{2><[2>laughs it was good we had a lovely <{3><[3>christmas <[1>right <[2>oh <[3>mm yeah nothing like family <{><[>getting together at christmas <[>oh families no we we it was lovely mm they wanted us to organise all different things but i i thought nah i the other <{1><[1>people that had a had reunions and they organised all sorts of things for the people to go to and then they were getting uptight because they weren't ready to go and all this <{2><[2>i thought nah <[1>word <[2>word were supposed to organise didn't get <{><[>organised <[>yeah yeah and so no we're not gonna organise nothing we're just gonna laze around and er whoever wants to go somewhere can go and <{><[>laughs <[>right so <.>a how about how many people would have come altogether oh crikeys huh about two hundred <{><[>laughs yeah <[>is that right <&>11:00 that's a big christmas dinner yeah but oh i mean <.>l there's a hundred on my side just are only mine <{1><[1>laughs me and my kids <{2><[2>laughs <[1>right <[2>yeah yeah <&>11:07 <&>end of interview
