<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>tape one side two <&>7:49 er what language did you first speak at home english english is <{><[>it yeah <,> and apart from english <&>8:00 <[>mm see it was <.>r rather in our day in my day really at home it was it was sad because um our dad who could er understand talk maori said that english was going to be our language those days yeah and that's the language you'd have to learn and learn it properly yeah but he'd always come up with um he'd always come up with some maori words for us er and er er my mother would <.>s you know say a few maori words and that voc but <{><[>he said the emphasis had to be on the maori <.>lan on the english language <[>mm yeah because that was going to be your <.>y your language the bread and butter language yes er but um we used to have sing songs in maoris <{><[>and oh guitars and ukuleles you know <.>th we had that voc <[>mm yeah that that in us you <{><[>know and <[>you're brought up in it yeah and dad used to voc very musical mm <&>9:00 my mother voc well jane will tell you my mother er played a <.>p piano beautifully yeah she used to teach music and that inhales and er you know we had that leaning towards to learn the <.>m maori songs and everything it was really great really happy <{><[>hours we had yeah <[>mm oh good but er that that <.>r unfortunately was the way those things were those days yeah that emphasis was on the english language yeah the english language yeah inhales i don't know if you you've been told this before but that's <.>th that's that's true yeah in our day inhales but when i er i was very happy when i made the maori team here cos it got me you know word yeah voc back into things again it was really nice you know fantastic <,> singing maori songs very good yeah that's yeah voc eh? yeah i know i know i've got a lot of er i've been brought up in that same sort of <{><[>word with an <.>engl with an english only <[>environment <&>10:00 yeah spoken but er as a whole sort of family is running yeah <,> er mm it's good now how's it going good er right do you know any other language apart from english <,> oh bit of italian yeah did you dabble in <.>tha i i read that thing on the maori battalion did you er dabble in that oh yeah i sing i used to sing that er <,> tu tu la sera <&>recites words of italian song <{><[>you know that you know that er italian song <[>laughs no no i haven't heard it no <{><[>word <[>oh it goes like this i'll sing it <&>sings italian song yeah i've heard it <{><[>yeah i've heard it yeah <[>yeah mm it's good yeah <&>11:00 and did <.>you did you mingle with a lot of italians over oh yes yeah yeah we er inhales we were um billeted amongst them sometimes you know but er you had to watch them because you didn't know if they were on your side or yeah yeah you know and er were they fascist or what yeah er you had to be very careful what you said and er providing you had about four or five of your own around with you you <{><[>pretty safe they'd be on their own but you could still never inhales <.>n never trust the men <[>yeah mm you know <,> but er <,> <{><[>yeah <[>word yeah i was reading this thing on voc i don't know if you saw that <.>pro they had a maori <{><[>programme <.>about <[><&>next two utterances addressed to wife oh thank you i just getting through it are you? in er <{><[>french <[>not really now not any more <,,><&>5 i learnt it but i <.>don <,> that's about all it came to went down on a french war ship one day and spoke in french and they didn't even understand a word we were <{><[>talking about <[>no they don't you know <.>they they <.>s i know quite a few that er thought they could speak french till they met a real frenchmen then so look actually it's like some of the um voc er maori people <.>from my my relations from the pa they went up to hamilton to the whatsaname learnt the maori there and they come home and the father couldn't understand them he <.>was and he could speak maori they learnt it <.>th the mormons mm church didn't they mm they learnt at the mormon college and <{><[>couldn't word <[>he said they spoke too fast or something and you know yeah wasn't fluent yeah oh cause one of arth's nephews was at the college that's rob fisher <&>19:00 yeah <{><[>mm <[>he teaches <{><[>there you know <[><.>w well matthew andrews was the same he <{1><[1>said he couldn't voc they went up there and <{2><[2><.>fa <[1>matthew mhm <[2>oh i think matthew matthew andrews used to <{><[>coach me for rugby <,> and that and rob rob's involved with this as well <[>mm is he mm mm good <,,> <{1><[1>yeah actually dad yeah cause dad was brought up dad was brought up with um rob fisher up at er paramai <{2><[2>when they were young and er when they were young they went <{3><[3>to <[1>word niece <[2>oh <[3>yeah right yeah right from the south island up there? yeah well dad dad's family shifted down south and um dad's father cos he was like twenty years younger than the oldest <,> in the family though he stayed he went um he went and stayed with er people up north marae and cos they they shifted all of them down south <{1><[1>so he was actually brought up <.>in he was like a different generation <{2><[2>altogether <[1>yeah <[2>yeah yeah mm so people that <.>are like dad's the same <&>20:00 generation as dad his cousins are a generation ahead yeah like <{1><[1>a yeah <{2><[2>like a generation <{3><[3>ahead <[1>mm <[2>mm <[3>yeah yeah and his like er well the equivalent of <.>a of his er what would they be second cousin oh <.>h their their <.>neph er their their <{><[>children <.>would their their children would be the same age as dad <[>grandnephew <{><[>oh <[>so they're sort of like <{1><[1>word <,> so his cousin's children are the same <{2><[2>age as him <[1>yeah <[2>a generation ahead <{><[>mm <[>mm because of that difference <,,> but they <.>u they used to live up at er waikanae up here oh that'd be right <,> and er <{><[>mm <[>gee yeah well johnny richardson he was on the matai he worked on the matai boat that went round servicing all the <{1><[1>lighthouses do <.>you he he's a relation of yours and he is from word <{2><[2>word <[1>yeah <[2>so was tihema wasn't he chap tihema mm mm <{><[>you used to go up there a lot and stay with um old bob tihema <[>and i <.>s oh yeah <&>21:00 bob? <[>waka? maori <{><[>she would have <[>voc i would think maori because er she used to come out with these smattering of maori sentences you know mm er ka kina and you know things that i've never forgotten what they what she used to say to us yeah um <{><[>makarere <[>but your father wouldn't let her talk maori would he and yet he was <{><[>taught <[>well it was as i was telling roy that those <&>23:00 days jane they turned round and dad said you learn english and learn it <.>th properly that's gonna be your language mm er cos voc and as i was saying to roy it's unfortunate that you know he was only trying to help us mm er didn't do you any harm it's done me no word <{><[>word <[>it's done me no harm now because er <.>y you know if you've got that maori in you <.>s you're always keen to well jane will tell any <.>s <.>maor i'm mad on songs mad on yeah listening maori songs and <.>m you know singing maori songs i love it <{><[>but they're finding trying to find words to fit in with the english words now aren't they <[>mm mm oh yeah you know they're <{1><[1>they've got to find a word for aeroplane another one for <{2><[2>word another one for word <[1>see there's no <[2>couldn't get er a maori word for wire once car you know yeah t v television what's the maori word for t v er they've made it poaka whakahua what about the er for car what would car be er <&>24:00 automobilie laughs motoka it's all <{1><[1>transliteration yeah <{2><[2>yeah <[1>motoka that word <[2>and er english isn't it?
